I'm ready for a recall – Tsolekile

Seven years after making his Test debut, Lions wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile says he is ready for an international recall. Tsolekile played three Tests in 2004 and was touted as a successor to Mark Boucher but did not go on to challenge for a spot. After moving from Cape Town to Johannesburg and, in his third season up country, Tsolekile believes he has done enough to be given a second chance.Tsolekile was named captain of the South Africa Invitation XI, which will play a three-day match against the Sri Lankans in Benoni from December 9. Although he was not included in the squad for the first Test, Tsolekile hoped to make a big enough impression to get selected later in the series.”My mind is in the right place. I’m in the right space and I’m ready for it,” Tsolekile told ESPNcricinfo. “I am a much better player than I was when I first played international cricket. I must be thereabouts, because the guy who plays for South Africa A is usually next in line.”Tsolekile also played in the A side that faced the Australians and scored a half-century on a tricky pitch in Potchefstroom. He had also captained the A team on tours to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh last year.Although a competent wicketkeeper, Tsolekile was tripped up at international level by his batting. He scored 47 runs in three Tests and admitted he was below-par. “Keeping has always come naturally to me, but I would say that my batting wasn’t up to international standards when I made my debut.”Since moving to the Lions franchise, after the coach Dave Nosworthy rescued an out-of-contract Tsolekile from an office job, he spent a lot of time crafting his batting technique. “I used to rely too much on talent,” Tsolekile said. “In batting, you have to work hard for runs, so the big thing for me was to learn to become more patient.” Tsolekile said he learned from batsmen Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn and the efforts paid off.In his first season with Lions, Tsolekile was the leading wicketkeeper at domestic level, both with bat and gloves. He scored 581 runs at an average of 58.10 and had 39 dismissals. The 2010-11 season was less profitable and his 281 runs came an average of 25.54. He amassed fewer runs than fellow wicketkeepers Daryn Smit, Morne van Wyk and Heino Kuhn, but Tsolekile and Kuhn had the most dismissals – 35. This season Tsolekile is, once again, in front. He has 269 runs from four matches.Tsolekile believed his performance over the previous three seasons would strengthen his case. “When you pick a wicketkeeper, you have to look at someone who has been consistent and had two or three good months, not just one.”I have always batted at No. 6 or 7 and so I am used to pushing the lower order along,” he said. “None of this will be new to me. I am 31-years old now and know my game well.”

Shehzad ton takes HBL to victory

A round-up of the action from the fourth day of the second round of Division One matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2011Ahmed Shehzad scored a sparkling century to help Habib Bank Limited clinch a three-wicket win over Abbottabad while chasing 368 at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. HBL began the day with all ten wickets intact and Shehzad approached the task with aggression, smashing 161 in 162 balls, including 26 fours and a six. He added a decisive 234 for the opening wicket with Shan Masood, who was the calmer, more sedate of the two partners. Their stand set up the foundation for a win. Abbottabad, however, made inroads and would have sensed the possibility of a victory at 337 for 7. But Hasan Raza remained unbeaten on 36 while Danish Kaneria made an quickfire 32 to help his team seal victory.Water and Power Development Authority completed the formalities on the final day, beating Faisalabad by seven wickets at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha. They had been resting easy at 205 for 3 overnight, chasing 260, and Aamer Sajjad and captain Naved-ul-Hasan ensured there was no damage done, seeing their team through to victory. The contest between National Bank of Pakistan and Islamabad ended in a thrilling draw at the Diamond Club Ground. NBP were set 303 to win and the game was there for the taking after Khurram Manzoor and Nasir Jamshed added 192 for the opening wicket. Khurram made 107 and Jamshed contributed 85 off 122 balls. But thereafter, the innings began to slide. Afaq Raheem’s offspinners played a decisive role, as he picked up six wickets to undermine the foundation laid by the opening stand. NBP lost wickets at regular intervals and slipped to 259 for 8, with Islamabad sensing a win now. But Raza Hasan and Uzair-ul-Haq batted cautiously through to the finish. In the end, NBP finished with 287 for 8; they’ll undoubtedly regret not taking advantage of that opening stand.Karachi Blues didn’t take long to beat Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the National Stadium in Karachi. ZTBL had been reeling at 174 for 6 after following on and the Karachi bowlers polished off the tail, taking just eight overs to capture the remaining four wickets. Seamer Mohammad Sami finished with a five-for, while Tariq Haroon took 4 for 51. Karachi were victors by an innings and 112 runs.Rawalpindi had an excellent chance of clinching victory against Pakistan International Airlines at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, but fell short by 18 runs and had to settle for a draw. PIA had enjoyed the better of the contest for three days but they came close to losing on the fourth. From 185 for 2 overnight, they slipped to 229 for 8 in search of quick runs and declared, setting Rawalpindi a target of 354 in 71 overs. Nasir Malik picked up five wickets. In the chase, opener Naved Malik led the way with 139 and though Rawalpindi seemed to be losing their way, reduced to 124 for 4 at one stage, they fought back superbly. Adnan Mufti blasted 57 off 39 balls to add 122 in quick time with Naved, and took Rawalpindi closer to the target. Mohammad Rameez then came in and finished unbeaten on 59, off 44 balls, including five fours and two sixes. However, the acceleration came a little late as Rawalpindi couldn’t reach the target in the allotted number of overs.State Bank of Pakistan ensured their contest against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium ended in a draw. SBP would have begun the day thinking of a draw as they were only 36 runs ahead overnight. A five-wicket haul from Prince Abbas threatened to upset their plans but a collective batting effort in the end, with much-needed support from the lower order, helped them save the game. Rameez Raja chipped in with 42 while the rest of the top and middle orders got starts. However, the team was still in some trouble at 126 for 6. But Gulraiz Sadaf ended any Sialkot hopes of a surprise win, batting determinedly for his unbeaten 72 with support from Rizwan Haider. SBP were eventually bowled out for 220, Sialkot could only bat five overs in the fourth innings.

The traditional curtain-raiser to the English season, MCC v Champion County, was in 2010 moved from Lord’s to Abu Dhabi to help test the concept in a competitive environment. In addition, the MCC Spirit of Cricket message has been widely promoted around the world – through a partnership with the Indian Premier League, as well as MCC’s first sponsorship of international cricket, the neutral Test series between Pakistan and Australia, which was hosted at Lord’s and Headingley last summer. Also, funds were provided for numerous cricket projects around the world – such as in Afghanistan – and the MCC World Cricket Committee established itself as an influential voice in the world game.”It is with considerable regret that the MCC Committee has accepted the resignation of Keith Bradshaw, confirmed Christopher Martin-Jenkins, the club chairman. “From his first day as secretary and chief executive, Keith has been a breath of fresh air at Lord’s and he has made an outstanding contribution towards the high standing and role of the club both domestically and internationally.”His open and positive attitude has been infectious to all those around him and he can be very proud of his numerous achievements at MCC. I shall shortly be writing to all members of the club with further details but suffice it to say he will be much missed by all of us at MCC and we wish him well for a successful future back in Australia.”Bradshaw said: “Following the recent loss of my mother, I am returning to Australia for family reasons. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club working with the committee, members, staff and the many cricket bodies around the world. My five years at Lord’s have been very special and I will leave with many treasured memories; it has been a great honour and privilege to serve the club.”I have no doubt that MCC will continue to go from strength to strength as an innovative, independent voice in world cricket, which guards the Laws and Spirit of Cricket with great knowledge and passion. Matthew Bell, the former New Zealand opening batsman, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game, after struggling with injuries over the past two seasons.”It’s a decision that’s been coming for a while now,” Bell said. “But it’s time for me to get on with the next phase of my life and to let some of the younger guys have the same chances that I’ve had. Retirement is a bit of an emotional thing but it was important to me to call time on it at the right time for the right reasons.”Bell, who made his Test debut against India in 1998 in Wellington, played 18 Tests for New Zealand scoring 729 runs at an average of 24.30. Following a poor Test series against Australia in 2001, he was dropped from the Test side only to be recalled seven years later in 2008 for the series against Bangladesh at home.He scored a century against Bangladesh in the first Test at Dunedin but played only four Tests after that, with his last Test against England in Napier in March 2008. Bell also played seven ODIs for New Zealand between 1998 and 2001.Bell represented Wellington at the first-class level in New Zealand for 14 seasons from 1997-98 and captained them for eight seasons. He scored 20 first-class centuries and is the only New Zealand batsman to twice score 1000 first-class runs in a domestic season and is the leading run-scorer for Wellington with 6565 runs.

Moles linked with Glamorgan coaching vacancy

West Ham reach player contract agreement

West Ham United insider and reliable source ExWHUemployee has shared a fresh update for supporters as the club agree a new contract in principle.

The Lowdown: Hammers eye in-house deals…

Reports have backed that the Irons and manager David Moyes are eyeing plenty of in-house new deals for some of their best players.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, before taking to the transfer market, West Ham apparently wish to secure the futures surrounding some of Moyes’ star assets – including the likes of winger Jarrod Bowen and midfielder Tomas Soucek ‘in line for big improvements’ (Claret & Hugh).

Meanwhile, shot stopper and mainstay number one Lukasz Fabianski has previously confirmed talks with the Irons over extending his deal which is set to expire in late June as things stand.

While nothing has been announced on those fresh terms yet, ExWHUemployee has now shared a fresh update on Fabianski’s situation.

The Latest: Agreement reached, but not signed…

According to the insider, via West Ham Way, a deal with the 37-year-old over fresh terms is ‘agreed’ but hasn’t yet been signed.

The goalkeeper, ‘as of now’, has given the green-light to extend his stay but no ink has been put to paper – with Ex claiming ‘question marks’ over Moyes’ options could prompt the club to turn to Burnley star Nick Pope.

The Verdict: Get it signed…

While it is currently uncertain what is delaying the actual signature from Fabianski, we believe securing the former Poland international should be a major priority before this summer.

A Moyes ‘untouchable’, the Premier League veteran has played nearly every top flight game for West Ham and more minutes in the division than any other Irons player (WhoScored).

Before contemplating whether to activate Alphonse Areola’s permanent deal clause or to take to the summer market, securing Fabianski to fresh terms for one more year is simply imperative.

Rangers player ratings vs Braga

Glasgow Rangers went through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League with a 3-1 win at home on Thursday night.

Two goals from James Tavernier and one from Kemar Roofe in extra-time was enough to see off Braga in the end, who had two men sent off.

It was not always plain-sailing for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team at Ibrox, as Braga managed to take the game to extra-time late on despite being a man light, while they were guilty of squandering a lot of chances, managing a whopping 31 shots on goal in total, but only five on target.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As such, The Transfer Tavern have now used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for the hosts on the night – could these men be looking over their shoulders regarding their places in GvB’s XI?

Calvin Bassey

Given a 6.8 overall rating, Bassey ranked as the Teddy Bears’ third-worst player.

The central defender lost out on four of his duels, while he also failed to record a single interception or tackle, and gave the ball away a total of 18 times.

Kemar Roofe

Despite his goal in extra-time, Roofe was only given a 6.7 rating.

The striker lost a team-high 12 of his duels, and was also off target with three of his other efforts on goal, missing two big chances in the process.

Roofe also made no successful dribbles, interceptions, tackles or key passes, and committed a team-high three fouls, losing possession ten times in total.

Allan McGregor

Perhaps unluckily given he did not have too much to do, McGregor was ranked as the Light Blues’ worst performer with a 6.5 rating.

The goalkeeper did concede from one of the only two shots on target that he faced though, and gave the ball away needlessly on seven separate occasions.

Spurs: Robinson makes Lo Celso claim

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged Antonio Conte to make a big call over Villarreal loanee and Lilywhites outcast Giovani Lo Celso.

The lowdown: Wanted man

The 26-year-old midfielder joined La Liga side, Villarreal, in January on loan until the end of the season and has since played a part in helping Unai Emery’s men reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lo Celso featured in all 180 minutes of the quarter-final triumph over Bayern Munich and has reportedly already done enough to earn a permanent switch to El Madrigal.

However, despite the murmurings of a potential swap deal involving Pau Torres, one ex-Spurs favourite still believes that the Argentinian has a career as a Lilywhite…

The latest: ‘More to give’

Robinson, who regularly features as a pundit for Sky Sports, has urged Conte to bring Lo Celso back to N17.

Speaking to Football Insider, he stated: “It is difficult when a manager doesn’t fancy you and then lets you go two or three weeks into his time there.

“Lo Celso is a player that I like. He has shown that he has defensive as well as attacking qualities. He isn’t afraid to stick a foot in and can play as a holding midfielder.

“I’m a big fan of his. You have to give Conte full control over his squad. He has been brought in to do a job. If he wants to move on Lo Celso you cannot question him.

“But I think he is a top player who has a lot more to give. For that reason, I’d like to see him get given another chance at Spurs.”

The verdict: Time up?

Signed for £27.2million from Real Betis (BBC), Lo Celso has flattered to deceive since joining Tottenham, scoring eight times and registering six assists in 84 appearances for the club whilst never truly nailing down a starting spot under Nuno Espirito Santo or Conte.

As the Italian manager and recruitment chief, Fabio Paratici, begin preparations for the summer window – it seems unlikely that the 38-cap Argentina ace is part of the long term plans moving forwards at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having been cast aside in January.

Lo Celso’s mid-season departure made room for the arrival and subsequent impact of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus as the Uruguayan has already eclipsed the nine Premier League outings managed by his fellow South American predecessor this term.

Everton: Exciting Warrington claim

Everton loanee Lewis Warrington is ‘thriving’ at Tranmere Rovers and has ‘massive potential’, reports The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, and he is now in discussions to extend his ‘deal at Everton’.

The lowdown

Warrington has come through the academy ranks at Everton, having joined the club at the age of six.

The 19-year-old is a season-ticket holder at Goodison Park and considers former Toffees left-back Leighton Baines his idol.

The ‘all-round midfielder’ has made a total of 20 appearances for Everton at Under-23 level but in January, the club decided to give him a taste of the men’s game.

They loaned him out to Micky Mellon’s Tranmere, who are fighting for promotion to League One.

Significantly, Warrington’s Everton contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The latest

Boyland says that Warrington has been shining during his stint across Merseyside at Preston Park.

He’s spoken to Tranmere sporting director and former Everton striker James Vaughan, who claims the Birkenhead-born talent has ‘massive potential’.

And he ponders whether the youngster can force his way into Frank Lampard’s ‘toiling’ midfield.

Warrington is in talks over extending his ‘deal at Everton’, but he’ll need to see a path to first-team football with The Toffees before he commits.

In the meantime, he’s attracting interest from other clubs, meaning he’s ‘unlikely to be short’ of rival offers.

The verdict

Warrington has nailed down a spot in Mellon’s side, starting their last ten League Two matches.

He ranks among the top six players in the squad for both tackles (1.5) and shots (1.2) per 90 minutes, and that speaks to his rounded skill-set.

Indeed, Warrington has operated as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder and an attacking midfielder at different points of his loan spell.

If The Toffees successfully extend his deal but allow Fabian Delph, who’s also out of contract in the summer, to leave, then that could theoretically open up a spot in Lampard’s senior ranks for the boyhood fan.

In other news, Everton are willing to sell this attacker.
