Bamford reveals Premier League ambition with Leeds

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has said that playing against Manchester United and Liverpool at Elland Road “would be something else”, in an interview with iNews.

What did he say?

Patrick Bamford is mostly used to playing in either the Championship or League One, making just a handful of Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Burnley and Middlesbrough, scoring just once.

However, his Leeds side are now on the brink of promotion to the Premier League, with a seven-point gap over Fulham in third with just nine matches to play.

Bamford has been a key part of the Leeds side this season, scoring 13 goals in 36 Championship appearances, and said that he would love to prove himself at top-flight level with the Whites.

“I’m not yet proven in the Premier League, but the best way to get back there is by taking a team up,” he told iNews.

“The main reason I signed for Leeds was the chance to become the main guy, help them reach the Premier League and then have a good shot at making my mark there.

“I’ve had a little taste of playing against the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool but to do it in front of the Elland Road crowd would be something else.”

Playing at the top level

Bamford has had four separate spells playing in the Premier League, but each have been short and limited in their success.
Should Leeds earn promotion, though, he is likely to play more of a starring role and he will be desperate to make an impression after taking criticism this season.
Whether he can prove prolific at Premier League level remains to be seen, though, and it will be interesting to see how he manages to make the step up if and when Leeds officially secure their place back in the top-flight.

Liverpool fans react to Adam Lallana’s performance against Everton

Who can catch Liverpool?

That is the question we must now be asking ourselves. The Reds were in action against Everton on Wednesday night, and easily dispatched their city rivals 5-2. That victory puts them back to eight points clear at the top of the Premier League, and it means they have won 14 of their first 15 matches.

Jurgen Klopp made several changes to the team that played against Brighton at the weekend, and one of those to come in was Adam Lallana. It seems that his performance split the Anfield faithful.

Firstly, there were those who thought he wasn’t up to the required standard.

It seems that the former Southampton man can do no right for some of the supporters. He wasn’t outstanding, as his 6.3 SofaScore rating indicates, but considering the Reds won comfortably, he can’t have been that poor surely?

There were a fair number of fans that were happy with his display, though.

It’s crazy how different some people’s perceptions can be of the same game. Again, whether £13.5m-valued Lallana – as per Transfermarkt – was that impressive is up for debate. At least it was nice to see him get some credit.

Some supporters were far more nuanced in their judgement of the match, praising him for his work-rate and defensive effort, but indicating he needs to more in possession.

In this Liverpool team, the ability to press and hound the opponents is just as important a skill to have as composure and technique on the ball.

Much harder than you’d think… Can you name Liverpool’s top scorers for each of these 25 seasons?

It remains to be seen how much more we will see of the 31-year-old 34-time England international in the coming weeks and months.

Juventus fans are adoring Paulo Dybala after AC Milan winner

Juventus had a really difficult task overcoming AC Milan at the weekend.

But the lads from Turin managed to salvage all three points after a narrow 1-0 victory over their rivals.

And the game certainly wasn’t easy as the goal arrived in the 77th minute and it came courtesy of the man who started it on the bench – Paulo Dybala.

The young Argentine forward replaced Cristiano Ronaldo early in the second half and it seems that Maurizio Sarri hit the nail squarely on the head with that substitution.

Needless to say, many Juventus fans were simply adoring Dybala after the game, swarming social media and Twitter with their brilliant messages of support and showering their star with praise.

Some of them seem to believe Dybala is born to become a champion and has warranted donning their no.10 shirt.

Leeds United wished happy birthday by Hollywood star and fan Russell Crowe

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is apparently a huge Leeds United fan.Crowe is the narrator of ‘Take Us Home,’ Amazon’s latest sporting documentary retelling the Premier League promotion quest during Marcelo Bielsa’s first season in charge of Leeds. Speaking to Radio 5 Live in 2015, the New Zealand-born actor explained the origins of his love for a club based in West Yorkshire on the other side of the world.”I used to come home from sport in the afternoon, me and my brother, and watch Match of the Day. We’re talking about a period of time in Australia when we had very few TV channels.”Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Back in 2015, in the midst of the Massimo Cellino years, which we won’t ponder on for any longer than necessary, Crowe even teased a possible takeover to help ease his side’s pain.

Unfortunately, it never materialised. Crowe has, however, kept close tabs on the club’s quest to get back into the Premier League, and has been quoted saying:

“I know when it comes to sport that it’s not necessarily about money. It’s about culture, and I have learned a lot in nine years [in charge of the Rabbitohs]. And it would give me nothing but pleasure to see that white army marching on together, getting back into the Premiership and being back where they should be.”

Former stars like Jermaine Beckford, Luciano Becchio, Tony Yeboah, Brian Deane, Danny Mills, Rod Wallace, Paul Robinson, Peter Haddock, Chris Whyte and Neil Sullivan all swarmed upon West Yorkshire on Thursday night to celebrate 100 years of the Championship side.

From Robert Snodgrass to Chris Kamara, Michael Bridges, Dominic Matteo and Lee Bowyer, others each paid homage online with their favourite memories from being at the club, too.

Wolves target Martin Odegaard could be Joao Moutinho’s successor

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to the Mirror, Wolves are plotting a move for Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard following his performances whilst on loan at league rivals Real Sociedad.

What’s the word?

We might only be entering October, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from being in full flow this campaign.

The latest reports suggest that the west Midlands club are planning to launch an ambitious attempt to land Odegaard sometime in 2020, whether that be in January or during the summer remains to be seen.

At the age of just 16, he clinched a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid before becoming the youngest ever player to represent them.

He’s since found it difficult to break into the first team setup considering the wealth of midfield options they have at the Bernabeu, but this season he’s particularly caught the eye for Sociedad with his two goals and two assists, via WhoScored.

Odegaard has been described as an ‘exceptional talent’ by Utrecht boss Dick Advocaat while his former Stromsgodset manager said the 20-year-old reminded him ‘a little bit of Lionel Messi’.

Long-term successor

Firstly, Wolves are playing in the Europa League which is something Sociedad cannot offer.

They also clearly have some sort of relationship with Los Blancos as they were happy enough to send Jesus Vallejo to the west Midlands for the season.

If you add to that the fact that Moutinho will be 34 as next season gets underway, this move isn’t as ambitious or surprising as first thought.

Odegaard has been widely regarded as a flop over in Madrid, which is a little unfair considering the expectations and pressure that was thrown on him at such a young age, a time when he should have been sitting his school exams, not plying his trade at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

But this season, he’s shown his electric potential with a string of excellent performances for the Whites and Blues.

In their 2-0 victory over Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, the starlet ran the show – scoring a goal on top of recording three key passes, four crosses, and three successful dribbles, per WhoScored.

His creative exploits were only further emphasised against Deportivo Alaves just last week as he racked up an impressive 10 key passes in just one match, including one assist.

If Odegaard continues that level of form, then Madrid may well want to keep hold of him but should Wolves be able to clinch him, he could well be the long-term heir to Moutinho at Molineux.

The Portuguese playmaker was the source of eight assists in the Premier League last term and has averaged a minimum of 1.7 key passes per game across both seasons which only goes to show how integral he is to Wolves’ attacking dimension.

But as a 33-year-old, his time at the top-flight is likely to slowly diminish and acting early to find his replacement is rather smart business – Odegaard has shown this season how he could play in a similar forward-minded midfield role with his aforementioned performances.

Leicester star Ricardo Pereira hailed for "outstanding" form by ex-Foxes man

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leicester defender Steve Walsh has hailed Ricardo Pereira for his performances for the Foxes.

What did he say?

The Portugal international arrived from Porto in the summer of 2018, and firmly established himself in the Leicester first-team. The right-back made 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing a further seven assists in his debut campaign for the club.

Now, Walsh has paid a glowing tribute to the instant impact the 25-year-old has made, and suggested his form may lead to transfer interest from other sides.

He said: “He’s been outstanding, he really has. He’s a top top player and when you’ve got ability that he’s got, interest will show. I think all the players at Leicester are fairly happy. They’re happy with the style of football and the manager and they’re settled.”

Shrewd business

As the Premier League’s big sides continue to spend shed loads of money on signing the very best players available, Leicester’s coup in signing Pereira is certainly something to shout about. The full-back enjoyed an impressive first season for the club, proving himself to be quite the offensive weapon.

The Portuguese man averaged 0.7 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game last year in the Premier League, and this season, he has maintained that same level of attacking efficiency, with his dribbling numbers even going up to 2.3 per game.

Such was his success, Pereira bagged both the the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards at the end of the last campaign, and is consistently showing why he is amongst the best right-backs in the division.

Real Madrid dropped the ball by taking off Casemiro and Sergio Ramos

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Real Madrid fans ended up going through some genuine drama this weekend when Levante were welcomed to Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos did take all three points in the end but Zinedine Zidane’s decision to give Casemiro and Sergio Ramos their rest almost cost them the game on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

The clash couldn’t have started better for Real.

By the time the teams were sent to the locker room for half-time, the Galacticos were already 3-0 up and seemingly with another impressive victory in the bag. But Levante had other ideas.

In the second half, it was all about the guests and their efforts to claw their way back into the game, fighting to salvage a nigh-on miraculous point.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Even though they somehow managed to reduce the gap to 3-2, they just couldn’t muster enough strength for one final push and one final goal to get the draw on the night. Still, they were close and Real completely crumbled defensively in that second half.

And taking into consideration that Zidane decided to rest Casemiro and Ramos by taking them off early, it really isn’t that big of a surprise.

A risk worth taking?

Both Casemiro and Ramos were subbed off on the hour mark as Zidane didn’t want to risk them sustaining an injury. On paper, that’s fair enough.

It’s something the Frenchman acknowledged in his post-match press conference and looking at the players who are already sidelined for Real Madrid, it really didn’t seem worth the risk. But on the other hand, that single decision almost cost them the entire game.

Of course, the Galacticos conceded one goal before the duo were taken off but the remainder of the second half was extremely difficult for them as a whole. Five of Levante’s eight shots came after the substitution and resulted in one additional goal.

This becomes more visible when we take into account their contribution to the team prior to them leaving the pitch. Casemiro tallied two tackles, one interception and three clearances while Ramos had one tackle, one interception and two clearances.

Quite clearly, both were doing their part in the defensive phase of the game.

The decision to take them off weakened the XI significantly and even though Zidane was just playing it safe, it was still a substitution that almost lost them the three points on Saturday.

That they got over the line was more by luck than judgement.

West Ham triple injury boost could harm Pablo Fornals’ chances of playing vs Watford

[ad_pod ]

As reported on the club’s official website, West Ham have been handed a triple injury boost ahead of their game against Watford with the return of Felipe Anderson, Sebastien Haller and Mark Noble back available for selection.

What was wrong with them?

Haller – a £45m signing from Eintracht Frankfurt – and Anderson picked up small knocks in the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City in the opening game, missing the trip to Brighton as a result.

The Hammers drew that game against the Seagulls 1-1, and they were also without Noble who is yet to feature for the club this term due to an injury which he picked up in pre-season.

In their absence, Manuel Pellegrini selected Pablo Fornals for his first Premier League start and also handed Javier Hernandez a start in Haller’s absence – the Mexican scored the Irons’ only goal.

Who could be affected by their returns?

As aforesaid, Fornals was handed the opportunity to impress in Anderson’s absence, but the £24m summer signing failed to really light up the Amex Stadium despite a bright start.

Football London gave the Spaniard a rating of six, stating that he looked eager and got stuck in straight away, although he faded as the game went on.

His WhoScored statistics also don’t cover the 23-year-old in too much glory.

Watch the video below to find out how CR7 achieves some his best skills…

As an attacking midfielder, you would want to see Fornals test the keeper and thread some incisive passes through to the forwards.

Disappointingly, he played zero key passes and also had zero shots on target, on an afternoon where he failed to really have an influence on proceedings.

Given Anderson’s status at the club as a key first-team player – his 10 goals and five assists last term prove this – you would expect Pellegrini to bring back such an effective performer as soon as he possibly can.

If this is the case, then Fornals may be the unlucky man to miss out having been so ineffective against Brighton.
