Ashar Zaidi, the Karachi-born allrounder, has signed a two-year contract with Sussex. Zaidi appeared in two Championship matches for the county last season, having played in the Lancashire League since leaving Pakistan. He has a British passport and will provide Sussex with a spin option next season, after the release of Monty Panesar.Zaidi wrote to several counties asking for a trial, having impressed during three seasons with Accrington. He scored an unbeaten 192 and took six wickets after being invited to play for the Sussex 2nd XI and then added 62 runs in two innings to go with six wickets during Division One games against Yorkshire and Durham.”It is an honour to sign for Sussex and this is a really big achievement for me, especially after a few years’ break from the pro game,” Zaidi said. “I’m really grateful for the chance that they have given me.”I’ll be aiming to justify that chance over the next couple of seasons. I’m hoping for enough opportunities to perform, and to open my chances for the future.”The 32-year-old made his debut for Islamabad in 1999, playing regularly in Pakistan’s domestic competitions until 2009, during which time he was also picked for Pakistan A. He has 11 first-class hundreds and a batting average of 38.26 and his left-arm spin will come in useful at Sussex, where Will Beer, the 25-year-old legspinner, was left as the senior slow bowler after Panesar’s departure. Zaidi has also recently turned out for Gazi Tank in the Dhaka Premier Division.Sussex’s captain, Ed Joyce, said: “Ash fitted into the squad really well and impressed everyone with his canny left-arm spin and attractive strokeplay. He will hopefully fulfil the spin role for us in four-day cricket while possibly also allowing us to play an extra seamer when the conditions suit.”He is also a very capable one-day cricketer as seen by his recent performances in the Dhaka Premier League and we’re hopeful he can play a big role for us in both the shorter formats.”

CCS demoted after arriving late to match

Cricket Coaching School were demoted from Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for arriving late to their match against Brothers Union on October 8

Mohammad Isam24-Oct-2013Cricket Coaching School has been demoted from the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for arriving late for their match against Brothers Union on October 8 . They will play First Division Cricket League next season, and all points scored against them or by them will be removed from consideration as had happened last season when Surjo Tarun were relegated for a similar reason. They were reportedly were stuck in a traffic jam on Jatrabari road while en route to Fatullah Cricket Stadium from Kalabaga. According to match referee Samiur Rahman, who was travelling with the team on the 20km journey, a lorry had collapsed on the other side of road, approximately 10km from the ground, forcing one lane to be closed and a collision between two buses caused more delay.CCS reached the ground ten minutes before the toss, but about 45 minutes after their scheduled arrival time. The match referee asked for a delayed start, because a provision for a 30-minute grace period had been added to the by-laws because of the Surjo Tarun incident last year – they had arrived late to BKSP ground and were demoted to the First Division Cricket League. But Brothers Union refused to take part in the toss and boycotted the match. The tournament was closed for Eid holidays but, on Wednesday, the league’s organisers Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, who were investigating the matter, announced the verdict and said it was taken according to the tournament’s rules. The Dhaka Premier League will resume on October 27 and CCS’s demotion means that only one other team will face relegation this season. Currently, Khelaghar and 17-time champions Abahani are at the bottom of the table, with one win each, but since Abahani’s win was against CCS, those points will be taken away, leaving them winless.

Injured Amla in doubt for third ODI

Hashim Amla is in severe doubt for the third ODI against Sri Lanka after sustaining a grade one tear to his left groin muscle, while fielding during the second match in Colombo. He did not bat on Tuesday after leaving the field in the 43rd over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Amla also missed the first match with muscles spasms in his neck.Fielding at fine leg, Amla pursued a ball off Dinesh Chandimal’s blade, and in his efforts to reel it in, leapt and fell hard on his left knee. He did not rise without help thereafter, and after receiving treatment on the boundary line, was helped gingerly back to the pavilion by a member of the team’s medical staff and a team-mate.”Injuries of this nature usually take three to seven days to recover, but he will receive intensive treatment and rehab in the coming days to give him the best possible chance of being ready for the third or fourth ODI in Kandy this week,” Mossajee said.South Africa are also missing Amla’s opening partner and regular captain Graeme Smith, due to injury, while spearhead Dale Steyn was also ruled out for the tour, as he recovers fully from a side strain.Sri Lanka meanwhile will have captain Angelo Mathews back for the remaining ODIs, after he completed his suspension for a slow over rate in the West Indies. The hosts have their own injury worry, with Lahiru Thirimanne nursing a sore thumb after being hit there during the second match, but is not expected to miss a game. The third ODI will be played in Pallekele on Friday, and the fourth on Sunday at the same venue. South Africa are 2-0 down in the series.

Red-hot MI go third after Boult and Rohit blow SRH away

Rohit scored his second straight half-century to give MI their fourth straight win

Knight: Klaasen batting far too low for SRH

Last week, Mumbai Indians (MI) had straightjacketed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters on an atypically slow surface at the Wankhede Stadium. On Wednesday, they did the same in the reverse fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, cantering to a seven-wicket win after keeping SRH to 143 for 8.Getting to that total was an achievement for SRH after they had slumped to 35 for 5, with Heinrich Klaasen hauling them to something like respectability with a superb 71 off 44 balls. Moderately respectable as the total may have been, it was far from enough to put pressure on MI, who raced to victory with 26 balls remaining, with Rohit Sharma continuing his return to form with a second successive half-century.Related

  • 'There are times when you have to rejig your attitude' but SRH haven't done that

  • Add a dash of Boult to a slice of Bumrah – the recipe for MI's turnaround

  • Ishan Kishan walks but Ultra Edge shows no edge

The defining performances of the match came from Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, who picked up two new-ball wickets each as SRH slumped to the lowest powerplay score of the season, 24 for 4. They were in danger of collapsing to a double-digit total when they lost their fifth wicket in the ninth over, but Klaasen and Impact Player Abhinav Manohar ensured that didn’t happen, putting on 99 for the sixth wicket in 63 balls. The damage had already been done, though, as 144 proved to be no challenge at all for an MI team that seems to be building ominous momentum after the customary slow start to their season. After winning just one of their first five games of IPL 2025, they have now won four out of four.SRH, meanwhile, are second from bottom with just two wins in eight games. They took a net run-rate hit too; theirs is now -1.361, only marginally better than bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) -1.392.

Boult and Chahar set the game up

The early exchanges set the tone, with both Chahar and Boult swinging the new ball while also benefitting from the ball stopping on the surface. Conditions still weren’t as tricky as SRH’s top-order slump made them look, though; both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were caught while going hard at the ball, slicing shots they were early on, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped a drive to mid-on.The defining moment of SRH’s top-order collapse, however, was the wicket of Ishan Kishan, who was out to a leg-side strangle for the second time this season. He began walking even though no MI player made a genuine appeal, and Ultra Edge proceeded to rub more salt in SRH’s wounds, showing no spike as ball passed bat.1:28

Aaron and Knight stumped by Kishan’s ‘bizarre’ dismissal

Klaasen keeps SRH afloat

When Hardik Pandya made it 35 for 5 with an offcutter-bouncer that got big on Aniket Verma, SRH had no option but to make early use of their Impact Player and bring on an extra batter, Manohar. It was Klaasen who did all the heavy lifting, though, particularly early on in the sixth-wicket partnership. Left-arm wristspinner Vignesh Puthur helped him spark the innings to life with a series of long-hops in the tenth over, and Klaasen helped himself to a six and two fours. Fifteen came off that over, and 16 off the next, bowled by Hardik.Klaasen went on to play a number of sensational shots – none better than a reverse-scooped six off Jasprit Bumrah in the 19th over – but thanks to SRH’s circumstances, his innings was necessarily one of restraint, as a control percentage of 86 suggested. The risks he took were measured ones, off marginal errors in line and length from MI’s bowlers. That he still finished with a 160-plus strike rate was a testament to his quality, with Manohar’s 43 off 37 balls and the scores of SRH’s other batters putting his innings in context.Mitchell Santner, varying his pace and seam orientation cleverly while keeping the stumps in play as much as possible, made the best of SRH’s self-imposed restraint, conceding just 19 runs – and just one four – in his four overs.Klaasen and Manohar gave SRH the push they needed at the death, as 35 came from overs 17 to 19. But the finish was muted. Bumrah dismissed Klaasen with a full-toss off the last ball of the 19th, and Boult came back to end the innings with a double-wicket 20th.One of them was another unusual dismissal, a rare hit-wicket. He sneaked a yorker past Manohar and hit the stumps, but the batter, sitting deep in his crease, had already disturbed the stumps while trying to bring his bat down to keep the ball out.1:43

Is Rohit Sharma well and truly back?

Rohit bosses the chase

SRH had replaced Mohammed Shami – who had endured a difficult season, picking up just five wickets in seven games at 52.20 while conceding 10.87 runs per over – with Jaydev Unadkat, and the left-arm quick marked his return with an early wicket, getting Ryan Rickelton caught-and-bowled in the second over of MI’s chase with another ball that stopped on the surface. But whether because of dew or other reasons, the ball in general seemed to come on to the bat much better during the second innings. Even Pat Cummins’ offcutter into the pitch, such a potent weapon on slow surfaces, sat up to be hit here, with Rohit and Will Jacks pulling him for a six each in a 17-run third over. That set the tone for the rest of the powerplay, with MI scoring 56 for 1 in this phase, the highlight an effortless six over long-off from Rohit off Unadkat, with arms at full extension.Rohit came into this game having improved his scores with each innings, his first seven visits to the crease bringing him 0, 8, 13, 17, 18, 26 and 76*. He seemed on course to keep that sequence going, but fell against the run of play on 70, chipping an Eshan Malinga yorker to midwicket in the 15th over.MI only needed 14 off 32 at that point, though, and Suryakumar Yadav was already batting on 26, picking his spots and targeting them clinically. He finished the game with a flurry of boundaries, to end it unbeaten on 40 off just 19 balls. The final act of the match summed up the contest: a flat Suryakumar pull off Zeeshan Ansari could have been caught at deep square leg, only for Reddy to overrun the ball and let it run away to the boundary.

Draw in Mumbai after madcap day

Ankeet Chavan’s nine-wicket haul was the third best in Ranji history•Fotocorp

On a manic day at the Wankhede Stadium in which 19 wickets went down, Punjab secured the first-innings lead well after lunch but were still in danger of losing outright to Mumbai. Left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan had figures of 9 for 23, the third-best bowling analysis in Ranji history, to skittle Punjab, the most dominant batting outfit this season, for 59. That left Mumbai with an improbable chase of 155 in 11 overs. They began with gusto but gave up the hunt at 62 for 2 after six overs. In the morning, Mumbai had looked on course for a first-innings lead, as Rohit Sharma made a double-century and guided his side to 427 for 4 with the help of the consistent Abhishek Nayar, in reply to Punjab’s massive 580. His run-out for 203, however, sparked a collapse that resulted in five wickets going down for four runs as Manpreet Gony sliced through the Mumbai tail. Nayar and the No. 11 Balwinder Sandhu put on 54 for the final wicket before Harbhajan Singh ended the innings by dismissing Nayar. With Punjab batting after taking the first-innings lead, a drab finish seemed on the cards, as is the case in so many Ranji matches, but Chavan and Mumbai provided plenty of excitement. Despite the late scare, though, Punjab remain runaway leaders on 32 points, with more than double the points of the second-placed team.
Scorecard
After five draws in a row, Gujarat got their first win of the season thanks to left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv’s 8 for 31 that demolished the Rajasthan batting. Dhurv had already taken six wickets in the first innings, giving him match figures of 14 for 96, the best-ever by a Gujarat bowler. It had been a tense first-innings battle on the third day, that Gujarat just about managed to win and the game was expected to peter out on the final day. Instead, Dhurv ripped through the inconsistent Rajasthan batting and shot them out for 119. Gujarat were left with a target of 102, which they knocked off comfortably. The win lifts them to 15 points, jointly in second place with Saurashtra. Defending champions Rajasthan remain rooted to the bottom of the table, with only five points from five matches.
ScorecardBengal collapsed to Saurashtra’s spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Nayan Doshi to suffer a 270-run loss – their third in six games – in Rajkot. Resuming at 65 for 3, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala departed within the first ten overs of the morning session, after which wickets fell regularly. Laxmi Shukla struck three sixes and four boundaries to push the score, but he didn’t last long. At 150 for 5, opener Rohan Banerjee fell to Jadeja for 47, and the innings lasted another 3.2 overs. Bengal were handicapped by the absence of their captain Manoj Tiwary, who was out of the game due to a back injury. For Saurashtra, the seeds of victory had been laid on the third day, when they had reduced Bengal to 65 for 3 after setting them a target of 431. Sheldon Jackson had scored an unbeaten century as Saurashtra consolidated a 97-run first-innings lead with an impressive batting performance. Jadeja celebrated his Test call-up with 138 runs and eight wickets in the match.
Scorecard
When the final day began, Railways seemed set to lose – they were at 54 for 5 in the second innings, still trailing by over a hundred runs against Madhya Pradesh. A fighting century from Mahesh Rawat and his dour 148-run partnership with PM Madkaikar, however, helped Railways salvage a draw, and MP had to contend with three points. As important as the runs the pair added were the overs they consumed, batting out nearly half the day. Though both were dismissed late in the third session, they had done enough to secure the draw. MP are now in fourth spot with 14 points, two spots ahead of Railways who only have seven.

ODI retirement not on Tendulkar's mind

Sachin Tendulkar has insisted he has no plans to retire from the ODI format though he has skipped all but two of India’s one-day series since last year’s World Cup. Tendulkar has also opted out of the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka starting later this month.”It’s not what XYZ think, it’s what I feel and I feel as long as I am enjoying and I feel like being part of it, I’ll continue (playing ODIs),” he told .On the subject of ending his one-day career, Tendulkar drew a parallel with his international Twenty20 retirement. “I felt I shouldn’t be part of the Twenty20 squad in 2007 and I had been asked (to stay on) but I felt I should not be part because the team did well. When I get that feeling in one-day cricket may be I would take that decision.”Tendulkar has played both of India’s one-day tournaments so far this year, but decided to sit out the upcoming Sri Lanka series. “I just wanted to spend time with my family, as simple as that,” he said. “I spoke to the BCCI and requested them. To be able to spend time with my children is also important.”In Tendulkar’s absence, India’s opening pair for the Sri Lanka series will be Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, who himself had asked for rest for the Asia Cup in March. Sehwag backed Tendulkar’s decision to miss the series. “Not only me but the whole country misses Sachin when he is not in action,” he told reporters in Delhi. “But one should realise that he is 39 years and he should be allowed to pick and choose which series he wants to go. He will certainly be available for the Test series against New Zealand.”

Hamilton-Brown powers Surrey to position of strength

Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown hit a counterattacking 89 to give his side a second-innings lead of over 300 against Sussex

George Dobell at The Oval06-Apr-2012
ScorecardThere was a time, not so long ago, when teams would have reacted to a tense situation and testing conditions with a straight bat and obdurate defence. Not any more. These days batsmen are more likely to bash their way out of trouble. The days of players such as Geoff Boycott, Alan Hill or Peter Roebuck batting all day for an unbeaten 80 have all but gone. As, up to a point, have the days when you expected matches to end in a draw. Attack, it appears, has become the best form of defence. The game has changed. It is, in many ways, more entertaining, but it is hard not to conclude that something – a certain level of craft – might have all but disappeared. Whether these encounters are preparing players for the rigours of Test cricket is highly debatable. Few batsmen will have much joy trying to hit the likes of Saeed Ajmal or Dale Styen out of an attack. Here, however, Rory Hamilton-Brown took this match away from Sussex on the second afternoon with a blistering innings. When he came to the crease the game was still, just about, in the balance. Surrey had just lost three for three in nine balls and had a lead of 123 with six wickets in hand. After the early loss of Jacques Rudolph, drawn into playing away from his body and guiding one to point, Mark Ramprakash was run out, the victim of a direct hit from Amjad Khan at mid-on with only one stump to aim at, as he attempted a sharp single. Chris Jordan was then stumped as he dozily allowed his back foot to lift, while Zander de Bruyn was undone by a bit of extra bounce and guided a catch to slip. But Hamilton-Brown responded with a ferocious counterattack. Enjoying some loose offerings from Sussex’s change bowlers, he thrashed 68 of his 89 in boundaries to ensure his side would not relinquish their advantage. Lewis Hatchett, punished for dropping short, saw his first delivery pulled for six, while Chris Nash, whose offspin is not the most intimidating of prospects, was greeted into the attack with a brace of boundaries. Hamilton-Brown also drove beautifully, with an on-drive off Amjad Khan the stroke of the day.It might have been different had James Anyon received better support. The Sussex seamer generated impressive pace, breaking Hamilton-Brown’s helmet with one sharp bouncer, and finding lift in the sluggish surface that others could not. He also kept charging in – his first spell was 11 overs – and, as the light failed (play was eventually curtailed by about half-an-hour despite the floodlights) he looked a hostile prospect. When he was out of the attack, however, Surrey feasted. Hamilton-Brown added 136 in 27.4 overs with Tom Maynard, with the latter happy to play the supporting role but again driving sweetly. It was, perhaps, fitting though that Hamilton-Brown should fall to a top-edged pull – the victim of a wonderful catch by Murray Goodwin running back from midwicket. Surrey are a side that will live, and die, by the sword. They are going to make for entertaining viewing.Hamilton-Brown and Maynard’s departures precipitated another collapse – Surrey lost 4 for 19 before bad light intervened but they still hold the upper hand.”It’s early season and guys are not used to batting for long periods,” Hamilton-Brown said afterwards. “We have batsmen up the order who graft for their runs, but we both like to put bat to ball. That is our natural game.”We’ve had a lot of opportunities throughout the game but not taken them. That’s disappointing, but if we can eke out another 20 in the morning, we’ll be in a strong position and they’ll have to bat very well to win.”Earlier Joe Gatting batted well but lacked support as Sussex surrendered a first innings deficit of 68. Anyon and Hatchett accompanied him for over an hour in adding 74 for the final two wickets, but too many men fell to cross-batted strokes when a straight bat was required. Crucially, there was no weak link in the Surrey attack and their bowlers maintained a fuller length than Sussex’s,It would be unwise to completely discount the chances of a side containing a player as gifted as Goodwin. The pitch remains better than the scores suggest and the lead – currently 318 – is not unobtainable. But Sussex will need to produce a vastly improved performance in their second innings if they are to deny Surrey their first win in the top division of the Championship since 2007.Edited by Alan Gardner

'Got to make sure we are concentrating' – Clarke

Michael Clarke, nursing a sore hamstring himself, called the fielding effort horrible and said that Australia will need to be much better if they are to win matches in the rest of the competition

Sidharth Monga at the Adelaide Oval12-Feb-2012Australia were not switched on tonight. There were fumbles, there were missed direct-hits, there were poor throws, and India – who at times batted equally sluggishly – were let off the hook. Michael Clarke, nursing a sore hamstring himself, called the fielding effort horrible and said that Australia will need to be much better if they are to win matches in the rest of the competition.More than the others, there were three crucial moments where Australia slipped. Early on in MS Dhoni’s innings, Ricky Ponting fumbled before hitting the stumps at the non-striker’s end, allowing Dhoni ample time to make his ground. Then, with 29 to defend off 22 balls, Ravindra Jadeja was all but run out but for Ryan Harris’s poor throw from point. In the next over Dhoni was dead again, only for Clarke to miss a direct hit from an arm’s length.”I think it’s concentration more than anything,” Clarke said. “If you look at myself, Ricky Ponting and also Dave Warner, we fumbled a few balls tonight, and we are better than that. You can’t blame anyone else when you are not performing as well as you like. We just got to make sure we are concentrating, and we are ready for every ball. It [Adelaide Oval] is as nice a ground as anywhere in the world. It’s a beautiful outfield, very flat. We have no excuses for our performance tonight. We just weren’t good enough.”Clarke couldn’t say if this lack in concentration could be put down to fatigue from a long season, but he said he was not queuing up to rest. “It’s international cricket, another chance to play for Australia, and you want to perform every single time you do that,” Clarke said. “Has it been a long summer? Well it has been a great summer for us so far. I can only talk about me personally: I feel like I am hitting the ball sweet, I feel I am training hard, and I am really keen to play every game at the moment.”Like all the guys, no one wants to rest. It’s just about managing the workloads, and making sure we are putting guys on the park that we think can help us win the game, [that ones that] give us the best chance of winning the game. If there is a time that we feel boys are a little tired, we would do that [rest players] as we have done with Michael Hussey. It’s just about assessing the team.”Both of India’s win against Australia this season have come in games where Matthew Wade has been pushed down the order. Clarke joked this was the last time it had happened. “I think Wadey can play in both areas,” he said. “He is good against fast bowling and he is good at the top of the order, and he is good at the death and he has done that for Victoria. Just a bit of a change in the order. I thought we’d try something else tonight. Did it work? We did pretty well, we made 270, we could have made a few more runs. But that’s the way it goes.”Clarke and Australia have a big day on Monday. Clarke will have his sore hamstring scanned, and they have to select the team for the next few games. “I’ll probably have a scan tomorrow, and then we’ll go from there. It’s a little bit sore, I have just had some ice on it. Fingers crossed, hopefully everything is okay.”
