South Australia vanquish Victoria, to host final

South Australia Redbacks spun their way to victory over the Victoria Bushrangers at the MCG – guaranteeing them the top spot and a home final on February 5. The Redbacks spinners Adil Rashid, Nathan Lyon and Aaron O’Brien restricted the hosts to a seemingly below-par score of 4 for 144, on a somewhat slow deck, and their batsmen knocked off the runs with five wickets to spare. It could have been much worse for the Bushrangers, but big-hitting wicketkeeper Matthew Wade (52 off 31 balls) saved their blushes, smashing 41 of the 43 runs scored in the final three overs.Michael Klinger started positively for the Redbacks but was run out thanks to some brilliant outfielding from Evan Gulbis. Aiden Blizzard looked sharp in the time he was at the crease, but was dismissed by a Brad Hodge full toss – caught at deep midwicket when he would have normally put it into the stands.Callum Ferguson fell cheaply before Daniel Harris and Cameron Borgas steadied the innings, leaving room for a cameo from Daniel Christian (28 off 17) to seal the match. Young spinner Jon Holland was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, finishing with 2 for 23.The reigning champions have now been condemned to a bottom-place finish while the Redbacks have eight days off before they play the final at home on February 5. New South Wales play Queensland on Saturday night to decide where the Preliminary Final will be played against Tasmania.

Newcastle handed double injury lift

An exciting Newcastle United injury lift has emerged over the weekend regarding two first-team players…

What’s the talk?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has reacted to Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson both making their long-awaited returns from their respective knocks.

Both players came off the bench in what turned out to be a disappointing afternoon for the Toon army as they lost 5-0 to Manchester City at The Etihad in the Premier League.

After the match, The Chronicle quoted Howe as saying: “Massive boost for everyone connected at Newcastle to see them back. We have missed them.”

Supporters will be buzzing

The supporters will surely be buzzing with both of them being back in action for the Magpies for multiple reasons.

Firstly, it means that Trippier and Wilson can both have a say in where Newcastle finish in the league table. They are currently one point off the top half of the table and this means that they are in with a realistic chance of landing in the top-10 if they can pick up results against Arsenal and Burnley.

Both players being fit and available will be a boost because they have proven that they can put in top performances for the club. Trippier has averaged an exceptional SofaScore rating of 7.42 since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window and has scored two goals for the club to date, showing that he can make an impact in the final third whilst putting in sublime all-round displays from full-back.

Wilson, on the other hand, has scored 18 Premier League goals since the start of last season. He has found the back of the net six times in 14 starts this term after managing 12 goals and five assists in 23 starts in 2020/21, which shows that he is capable of being a match-winner for the Magpies with his knack for scoring goals.

Therefore, both players have the requisite quality to have a major say in Newcastle’s last two matches of the campaign. They can help the team to finish in the top half and that would be an exciting way to end Howe’s first season at the club.

The fans will also be buzzing with their availability as it means that they will be getting game time under their belt ahead of 2022/23. It means that they will not be arriving for pre-season with more work to do than the others as they have been fully integrated back into the group this month.

IPL asks franchises not to approach domestic players

The BCCI has sent a notice to all 10 IPL franchises instructing them to refrain from approaching uncapped India domestic players until notified to do so

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Dec-2010The BCCI has sent a notice to all 10 IPL franchises instructing them to refrain from approaching uncapped India domestic players ahead of the 2011 tournament until notified to do so by the board. “The circular states the franchises can only sign players once the IPL lets them know the timing,” a franchise official told ESPNcricinfo.Under league rules, the domestic players have been broken down in to three categories, depending on how much first-class cricket they have played. The lowest tier of players can sign for Rs 10 lakhs (US$21,500) per year, the middle tier for Rs 20 lakhs ($43,000) and the top tier – those who have played at least five seasons of Ranji Trophy – will be paid Rs 30 lakhs ($64,500) per year. According to the official, a shortage of good domestic players is the reason why franchises are reportedly pursuing deals already. However, not everybody is happy. Another franchise official said that the IPL’s closed-door method is only hurting them. “How can the IPL do this and not announce the date when we can start signing the talent? Otherwise we might lose on fetching a good buy.”

The IPL has asked the franchises to submit a list of players they would be interested in the auction by December 24. This will help them strike out the names nobody wants, helping smoothen the two-day auction process

The domestic players that are not signed by the franchises after the BCCI gives the go-ahead will remain unsold, and will not be a part of the auction

IPL 4 has been dogged by controversy since the then chairman Lalit Modi was suspended by the BCCI in April. Modi was later removed from the administration of the league altogether, while two teams with alleged links to him- Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab – were terminated by the board. Both teams have since been reinstated by the courts and will take part in the player auction in January. There seems to be another viable reason why the IPL is being strict on the signings of uncapped domestic players. “The BCCI is wary. What if both Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals sign uncapped players, and then falter on the guarantee money the Bombay High Court asked them to raise by January 3 as a condition for restoring their status after they were terminated?,” an IPL official told ESPNcricinfo.

Tottenham: Sky make Neves transfer claim

As per Sky Sports, some transfer news has come out of Tottenham Hotspur involving in-demand Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves.

The Lowdown: Pochettino eyed 2018 move for Neves…

Journalist Adrian Kajumba, writing for The Daily Mirror at the time, revealed that former Spurs boss and fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino personally had Neves in his sights back in 2018.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the Argentine reportedly added Wolves’ star midfielder to his transfer wish list alongside other Portuguese internationals like Cedric Soares and Gelson Martins.

In the same year, reports suggested that the Molineux outfit would have demanded big money to let Neves leave, with Wolves apparently setting his valuation at ‘over £100 million’.

Now, as per Sky Sports, it appears that Tottenham have been eyeing him again this season as they aim to back manager Antonio Conte with fresh faces.

The Latest: Spurs in mix for Neves?

The big-name broadcaster, as written by their reporter Lyall Thomas, have claimed that Spurs ‘have also been interested in Neves this season’ alongside Manchester United.

This comes as Sky Sports also revealed that the 25-year-old is emerging as a top transfer target for north London rivals Arsenal.

The Verdict: Make a move?

Given the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in January, not to mention the presence of other dependable central midfielders like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in their squad, a move for Neves shouldn’t be too hotly pursued by Spurs in the summer.

Tottenham arguably need a backup to star striker Harry Kane much more urgently, with The Athletic also stating that Conte’s major summer priority is a left-sided central defender.

Despite Neves being lauded as a ‘quality’ Premier League player by ex-Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, the Lilywhites may have other priorities this summer, and we believe they should leave Pochettino’s one-time target alone.

West Ham: GSB join Lucas Ocampos chase

As per Calciomercato, there has been an update on West Ham United’s summer transfer plans as news emerges on Sevilla forward Lucas Ocampos.

The Lowdown: Moyes chasing attacking additions…

It is no secret that David Moyes is actively seeking upgrades to his West Ham attack in the summer as the next transfer window seems set to be an interesting one.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hammers lodged multiple late January bids in an attempt to help bolster Moyes’ forward line, but moves for the likes of Duvan Zapata (Atalanta) and Darwin Nunez (Benfica) ultimately failed to materialise (Sky Sports).

Jesse Lingard of Manchester United, another long-time Moyes target, is also at the centre of West Ham’s interest as the club also weigh attacking midfield options.

Now, as per Calciomercato, it appears that another new forward has come onto GSB’s transfer radar.

The Latest: West Ham eyeing Ocampos move…

According to their information, West Ham, and by extension the club’s owners GSB, are now eyeing a move for Sevilla ace Ocampos alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It is also believed that the Argentina winger ‘may leave Sevilla in the summer’ despite still having another two years on his contract.

The Verdict: Good option for Moyes?

The report is unclear as to just how much Ocampos would cost West Ham, but according to Transfermarkt, his value has dropped by £18m since late 2020. Indeed, once estimated at around £45m, that number has since plummeted to £27m as GSB and co enter the picture for him.

Scoring a career total of 84 goals, the 27-year-old has racked up eight goals and four assists in all competitions so far this season, potentially meaning Sevilla’s asking price could make or break GSB’s decision to lodge a formal offer.

Ocampos has displayed real ability in recent years, with Spanish reporter and Breaking The Lines analyst Javier Parra Peña lauding him as a ‘more complete attacker’ and praising his ‘sensational’ impact at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium (Twitter).

Whether or not the South American could repeat this form under Moyes at West Ham remains to be seen, but as he becomes linked with a Sevilla exit, it’s interesting to see the Irons come into contention.

Spinners earn Gloucestershire tight victory

Spinners Richard Dawson and Aaron Redmond played key roles as Gloucestershire gained only their third Friends Provident t20 win at the expense of Middlesex at Bristol

27-Jun-2010
ScorecardSpinners Richard Dawson and Aaron Redmond played key roles as Gloucestershire gained only their third Friends Provident t20 win at the expense of Middlesex at Bristol. The home side posted 153 for 6 after losing the toss, Hamish Marshall making 52 not out and Alex Gidman 42. There were two wickets each for Pedro Collins and Tim Murtagh. Middlesex looked favourites until Dawson (2 for 20) and Redmond (1 for 26) bowled eight tight overs of spin in mid-innings, helping to restrict the visitors to 149 for 7 and give their side victory by four runs.Dawid Malan hit 44 off 39 balls, with five fours, but lacked support in a disappointing Middlesex batting effort. They needed 12 off the last over, but Steve Kirby bowled Malan with the first delivery and then kept the ball full to ensure there were no boundaries.David Payne claimed 2 for 38 on his t20 debut, while leg-spinner Redmond’s dismissal of Josh Davey was the first wicket since joining Gloucestershire for the remainder of the competition last week.Earlier, the Gladiators had lost openers Will Porterfield and Redmond with only 24 runs on the board. Porterfield pulled a catch to deep midwicket off Collins and Redmond was caught behind driving at Tyrone Henderson. It was 44 for 3 when James Franklin, on 22, overstretched to a delivery from Neil Dexter and was stumped by Ben Scott. Marshall survived a caught and bowled chance to Tom Smith on 10 and went on to share a fourth-wicket stand of 94 with skipper Gidman, who hit sixes off Smith and Murtagh in his 33-ball innings before being caught at long-on.Marshall reached his half-century off 38 balls, with two fours and a six, but Dawson and Kadeer Ali perished in the bid for quick end-of-innings runs and Murtagh produced a tight last over.Defeat cost Middlesex the chance of joining the clubs on 10 points in the South Division, while the result took Gloucestershire to six points from 10 games and just about kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive.

Everton: Andre Gomes was poor v Aston Villa

Everton extended their dire run in the Premier League to one win in 14 matches with a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa in the early kick-off on Saturday.

The Toffees were headed towards the contest being goalless at half-time before Emi Buendia rose highest to head in Lucas Digne’s corner, scoring the only goal of the game.

The defeat also kicked off Duncan Ferguson’s spell as caretaker manager in the worst possible way after Rafael Benitez was sacked earlier this week, with the Merseyside club 16th in the Premier League.

Once again for Everton, a handful of players failed to live up to their quality, with the likes of Mason Holgate, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jonjoe Kenny all struggling. However, midfielder André Gomes was particularly disappointing at Goodison Park.

Will Everton now get sucked into a relegation battle?  If you are looking for the odds, it is obviously crucial to pick a reputable site. Mikael at  the Swedish betting comparison site spelbolagutansvensklicens

Gomes cost Everton today

With Allan on the bench, this was an opportunity for Gomes to ignite a run of regular starts in the team, having been on from the first whistle in just three league games this season prior to today. However, the Portuguese midfielder failed to offer significant influence in the middle of the park as Everton lost their third consecutive league game.

According to SofaScore, the 28-year-old only had 26 touches all afternoon, a ridiculously low tally for a midfielder, whilst attempting just 16 passes and completing a mere 12.

The midfielder also failed to make a notable contribution in both the offensive and defensive aspects of his game, failing to contribute a single shot, key pass, interception or block, while not attempting a single dribble either and making just one tackle. Gomes also lost 62% of his duels and was dribbled past on four occasions prior to being withdrawn after just 51 minutes (SofaScore), an insipid performance which went a long way to costing his team this afternoon.

What will make the performance particularly frustrating for the 28-year-old is that it was an opportunity to shine in front of Ferguson, who is set to take charge of the next few games while the club look for a permanent successor to Benitez.

Allan has been a regular for the Toffees this season, starting 16 Premier League matches, whilst Abdoulaye Doucouré was statistically Everton’s joint-best player against Steven Gerrard’s side, with a 7.4 ranking from SofaScore.

With a new manager set to come into the dugout at Goodison Park soon, the next few games will be an opportunity for players to make an impression, whether they are looking to keep their place or get into the team, and Saturday’s performance wouldn’t have helped Gomes’ claims.

Granted, a calf injury kept him out of action earlier in the campaign, but the 28-year-old is now fully fit, and chances could prove limited if he performs at a similar standard to what he provided against Aston Villa today.
