Aston Villa: Fans react to Robin Olsen arrival

Aston Villa announced the signing of goalkeeper Robin Olsen on Tuesday evening.

And a number of Villa fans were quick to give their thoughts to the club’s fourth January addition on social media.

The 32-year-old has joined Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Kerr Smith in moving to the Midlands in 2022, signing on loan until the end of the season.

Steven Gerrard was after a back-up goalkeeper this month to work alongside Emiliano Martinez and Jed Steer and has got his wish with the Sweden international.

Olsen spent the first half of the season with Championship side Sheffield United, where he made 11 appearances. However, he fell out of favour at Bramall Lane, with the Blades willing to cut his stay in Yorkshire short, with Villa now sealing a temporary move from parent club AS Roma.

Villa fans react

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply to the club’s official post on Olsen, with one ‘excited’ and another labelling it as ‘decent’.

“I don’t think people understand how great this signing is, allows Sinsalo to go out on loan and get first team football, also Olsen in himself is a great keeper and he’s obviously aware he’s come to be a back up and that’s a great mentality for him to do that.”

Preview: Leeds XI vs Chelsea

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United side head into Saturday afternoon’s Premier League fixture in rather dire straits, having picked up just one win in their last five league outings, as well as being in the midst of a considerable injury crisis.

Indeed, all of Rodrigo, Robin Koch, Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper look set to miss the trip to Chelsea due to various knocks, leaving the Whites manager with a threadbare squad to face Thomas Tuchel’s third-placed Blues.

How will the Argentine line up his team at Stamford Bridge this afternoon? Here’s how we think the Leeds starting XI could look.

With the Whites’ aforementioned injury woes somewhat forcing Bielsa’s hand today, we predict that the 66-year-old will make three changes to the team which started the 2-2 draw against Brentford last time out.

In the back four, 22-year-old Pascal Struijk is thrown straight back into the side following his own recovery from injury, taking the place of Cooper alongside Diego Llorente at centre-back, while Junior Firpo and Luke Ayling start at left-back and right-back respectively.

The middle of the park also sees one change, with the stricken Phillips making way, Adam Forshaw dropping back into the England international’s usual role in front of the back four and Mateusz Klich coming into the side alongside Stuart Dallas in the central midfield two.

In attack, Daniel James and Raphinha retain their places on the left and right flanks, while Tyler Roberts is replaced by Joe Gelhardt up front, with Bielsa dubbing the 19-year-old a “human wrecking ball” who can do serious “damage” in the opposition penalty area. Those traits will almost certainly be needed if Leeds are to have any chance of securing a result at Stamford Bridge.

Denly double as tourists dominate

England Performance Programme 425 for 9 (Denly 217, Tredwell 70) and 44 for 1 lead Titans 235 (du Plessis 124*, Shahzad 4-37) by 234 runs

Joe Denly’s impressive 217 set up a dominant day for the England Performance Programme (EPP) as they hammered home the advantage against the Titans at the LC de Villiers Oval.Denly has had a difficult time in South Africa until now, failing to make an impact his two outings in the Twenty20 series, but after rescuing EPP from 133 for six to end up 188 not out on day one, he reached 217 on the second morning before falling to Imran Tahir’s leg-spin.He struck for 26 boundaries and four sixes in his 295-ball stay and lifted EPP to 425 for nine before Andrew Gale’s declaration put the Titans in.It was an important innings for Denly, who lost his spot in England’s one-day team to Jonathan Trott at the top of the order. Though Alastair Cook is England’s established Test opener, there remain doubts about his ability to deliver against the best teams and Denly could be next in line if he falters.Amjal Shazad, the Yorkshire paceman, and Sajid Mahmood then made inroads with a hostile new-ball spell. The Titans’ top-three batsmen were all dismissed without scoring and three more wickets fell quickly as the Titans slipped to 60 for 6. They were rescued by a fine, unbeaten hundred from captain Francois du Plessis, who also plays for Lancashire. His counter-attacking 124 came off 162 deliveries and lifted the home side to 235.Shazad cleaned up the tail to end with 4 for 37 while Mahmood’s 3 for 51 was a timely reminder to the England selectors of what they could be missing in the Test series.EPP took their 190-run first-innings lead up to 234 as they reached 44 for one in their second innings.

Shane Watson is fast learning that friendly fire isn’t always so friendly. Having spent the majority of his career pursuing a Test berth, Watson now finds himself in the uncharted waters of incumbent status entering an Australian summer – and the internal challengers are circling. From the moment he was crowned Australia’s new Test opener at Edgbaston earlier this year, Watson expected the likes of Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques and Chris Rogers to launch campaigns to usurp the throne. What he hadn’t counted on was the overwhelming push from his adopted state’s media to see him replaced with Hughes, his New South Wales team-mate, for the opening Test against West Indies, beginning at the Gabba on Thursday. With anonymity no longer his ally, Watson is coming to terms with life with a bullseye on his back. Half-centuries in each of his first three Test innings as opener might have afforded him a degree of breathing space but, cast as “the other man” in a regional love-affair with the swashbuckling Hughes, the prevailing mood is that Watson is a man pursued.”That was definitely interesting,” Watson said of the pro-Hughes campaign. “I didn’t score as many runs as I would’ve liked during the Ashes, but I was able to make a pretty good fist of it. There has been a lot of pressure there from the media pushing Phil Hughes, but in the end I’ve got the opportunity. I’ve just got to be performing anyway, whether it’s Phil Hughes or Phil Jaques or any other batsman in Australia pushing me. But this is certainly all a new experience for me.”Watson’s place at the top of the order is not only a matter of debate in the nation’s newspapers. Andrew Hilditch and Ricky Ponting have in the past week offered contrasting forecasts of his long-term place in the side – Hilditch extolling his opening credentials, Ponting viewing him in a more traditional allrounder’s role.”Down the track, we all think that with Shane’s style of play, he would be suited down in the middle order and being able to give us 15 to 20 overs as well,” Ponting said. ”That’s the cricketer I always thought he would be. He can bat pretty much anywhere in the order which is terrific for us, but the difficulty that presents is how many overs are you going to push to get out of him knowing that he’s going to have to bat at the start of the second innings?”Ponting’s point is a salient one. Over the past two years the world has witnessed the disastrous effects modern cricket scheduling has had on the game’s leading allrounders – Andrew Flintoff, Dwayne Bravo and Jacob Oram have all spent extended periods on the sidelines with injury – and Australia would be reckless to expose Watson to a similar fate.Watson, of course, is all too aware of the physical demands placed upon allrounders. Back, shoulder and hamstring problems were among the litany of injuries that prevented him from realising his potential for much of the past decade, but a revised training regime has given him confidence that the worst might be behind him.Speaking at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane this week, Watson had ample opportunity to reflect upon the myriad twists his career has taken in recent years. It was at that facility three years ago that he sustained the Ashes-ending hamstring injury that jeopardised his international career. It is at the same practice field he now prepares to entrench himself as a first-picked member of the Test side, having survived and thrived through one of the most demanding years in the history of Australian cricket”I wasn’t in a great place there for a while,” he said. “I thought I was going to have to give up being an allrounder. For me to play for Australia, I thought it was going to take me a lot longer to get where I wanted to go. Being an allrounder gave me an opportunity to narrow the number of people you’re up against. I wasn’t really thinking about quitting cricket, because I knew I had my batting, but deep down I knew the things I could achieve as an allrounder.”I’ll have to be clever about how I go about things, there’s no doubt. Being an allrounder and seeing the unfortunate thing that’s happened to Freddie and other allrounders around the world, it just rams home the importance of getting my body just right. For me to be able to get through the last six months of cricket and to feel really good and fresh after it, it’s been very rewarding to know the things I’ve done especially over the last two years are paying big dividends. It puts my mind at ease because at a certain stage I was doubting whether I was ever going to get an opportunity to see how good I could be on the international stage.”And, so, to the next phase of his career. Having secured his place in the Test XI, Watson is now refining his technique to withstand the challenges posed by the game’s elite new-ball bowlers. His successes in England were tempered by a tendency to lose his wicket shortly after breaks in play – either trapped on the crease or playing around his front pad – and Watson is working to sharpen his footwork before his duels with Jerome Taylor, Dwayne Bravo and co.”It is such a big challenge opening the batting and just playing a lot of cricket back to back,” he said. “It definitely has been a work in progress to work on certain aspects of my game. Some have come along quicker than I expected, but a few other little things creep in like the mental side of switching on and switching off every ball and not coming back from a break and getting out. That’s the continual challenge and the thing I love about cricket. I feel that’s a step along the way to making me a better player.”

Alan Nixon drops Derby County claim

Alan Nixon has dropped a worrying claim on Derby County’s ongoing off-field struggles.

What’s been said?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Sun journalist discussed both Middlesbrough and Wycombe Wanderers’ compensation claims against the Midlands outfit, with the former suggesting that the Rams’ financial irregularities saw them miss out on a play-off place back in 2018/19, while the latter suggest that the Pride Park side’s breaking of EFL rules resulted in their relegation from the Championship last season.

And, in response to a fan asking what his opinion on the claims lodged against Derby, Nixon said: “Up to them. Very dangerous precedent all the same.”

Fans will be terrified

Considering the sheer volume of off-field issues Wayne Rooney’s side are currently facing, with the club still being in administration and no potential buyer appearing close to completing a takeover of the club, the fact that Boro are claiming £45m and Wycombe £6m in compensation from the Rams will certainly have Derby fans terrified about their club’s future.

Indeed, speaking about the duo’s claims against the club, Carl Jackson – one of the administrators working with Derby – suggested that the issue will indeed need to be discussed with the EFL, something that – should the league’s governing body feel the Rams do indeed owe both clubs compensation – could have disastrous consequences for the Championship side.

Jackson said: “The claims are against Derby County Football Club and therefore, principally, those are issues that we have to deal with. It’s fair to say that there have been discussions with the EFL about those particular claims, and what I can say is the EFL will do what they can, working with us, to actually ensure those claims are dealt with properly and are not an impediment to our plans to restructure the club and find a new owner.”

However, as Nixon suggests, if Derby are forced into paying compensation to both Boro and Wycombe, it would indeed appear to create a dangerous president in the wider game, as any club punished by a league or competition’s governing body for breaking financial regulations would then subsequently face claims from any side who feel they were affected by the matter.

Either way, the news is certainly not good for Derby County or their fans, with the future of the Rams looking bleaker by the day.

Forshaw backed to fill in for Phillips

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has backed midfielder Adam Forshaw to fill in as a reliable deputy to Kalvin Phillips moving forward.

The Lowdown: Forshaw back after injury nightmare

Forshaw was a key player for Leeds when they were in the Championship, making 31 league appearances back in 2018/19.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old has suffered a nightmare time of things with injury, missing close to two years of action with a serious hip problem.

Forshaw is now back in the fold, however, appearing five times this season and producing a ‘good cameo’ away to Norwich City on Sunday, according to journalist Phil Hay on Twitter.

The Latest: Whelan makes key claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan tipped Forshaw to continue to be ideal cover for Phillips in central midfield as the season progresses:

“Yeah, I think so. We’ve still got to be mindful he’s had a really bad injury. He was out for two years, it’s not like two months.

“A little bit of cotton wool round him, just easing him in. Giving him the right amount of minutes, in the right games and situations.

“If Kalvin does suffer any more injuries, he probably is the one that you look at, to step into that role. So it’s very important that we manage him.

“I’m sure he’ll be expressing his fitness levels and how he’s feeling to the medical staff and the manager as well. It’s important that they all work together on Adam.

“Keep him fit, keep him out there on the training ground, keep him playing certain minutes of football. It will hopefully, steadily, get him back to where he was before the injury.”

The Verdict: Hard to rely upon

While it is heartwarming to see Forshaw back fit – Whelan has hailed him as ‘excellent’ in the past – Leeds could still do with signing another midfielder to rival Phillips.

Given the severity of his injury, it is hard to rely on him staying fit for long periods, even though he is currently injury-free and impressing.

In an ideal world, Forshaw will carry on being a reliable squad member for a number of years, but it would be risky to trust him as Phillip’s main backup after his major injury setbacks.

Aston Villa are admirers of Thomas Frank

Aston Villa are thought to be admirers of Brentford manager Thomas Frank, according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans.

The Lowdown: Frank’s time at Brentford…

The Dane was actually Dean Smith’s assistant at the west London club and took over as their manager when the latter joined Villa back in 2018. Since then, he has taken charge of 161 games, winning 79 of those and taking the Bees into the Premier League.

Brentford have impressed in their first Premier League campaign, beating Arsenal and West Ham and drawing with Liverpool, whose manager Jurgen Klopp labelled Frank ‘incredible’ and ‘entertaining’.

Villa are now on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Smith, and it seems as if they may look to take another Brentford manager three years on after securing the 50-year-old.

The Latest: Villa are admirers of Frank

Evans shared a story on The Athletic regarding Smith’s sacking and the contenders to replace him.

Well-known targets such as Steven Gerrard, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Kasper Hjulmand were mentioned, but the journalist added that Villa are admirers of Frank.

Evans also claimed that NSWE are prepared to pay compensation to get the manager they want, which would not preclude any candidates who are currently in a job.

The Verdict: Lange to be key?

Sporting director Johan Lange will reportedly play a key role in bringing in a new head coach, so a move for fellow countryman Frank could be a realistic one. The pair know each other well after sharing an office when coaching at Lyngby, and the Brentford boss has impressed in his first season as a manager in the English top flight.

Lightning may well end up striking twice when it comes to Brentford bosses leaving for Villa, so the links to the 48-year-old may be worth keeping a close eye on during the international break.

In other news: Five-honour boss also in NSWE’s Villa’s thoughts; he’s ‘one of the best’.
