Please bin him off: Southampton fans fume at latest Elyounoussi performance

[ad_pod ]

Mohamed Elyounoussi played the full 90 minutes as Southampton suffered a 3-0 defeat at West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints will finish above the relegation zone, but there is no getting away from the fact that the loss at the London Stadium was very disappointing.

And a number of the club’s supporters were left fuming with the performance of Elyounoussi, who struggled against the Hammers.

According to WhoScored, the 24-year-old only managed one shot and had a pass success rate of just 77% during his time on the field.

Southampton signed the attacker from Basel last summer and there were high expectations, but he has not contributed a single goal or assist this season.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

The 24-time Norway international was not the only Southampton player who struggled against West Ham, but the club’s fans took exception to his display in particular.

Why? Man United are paying Ole more than what Klopp, Sarri & Emery earn

[ad_pod ]

In his career, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed Manchester United Under-23s, Molde, Cardiff, Molde again and now Manchester United’s first team – a truly strange career path. He has also never won anything of note, picking up a few Norwegian titles to show for his efforts.

Jurgen Klopp has managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, and has won the Bundesliga title twice, as well as the DFB-Pokal – he has proven himself as a top-class boss, and has turned the Reds into a genuine force.

Maurizio Sarri has had a lengthy managerial career spanning 28 years, in which he was able to take Empoli and Napoli to new heights whilst playing an eye-catching style; he also led Chelsea to the Carabao Cup final, earned a third-place finish, and could still win the Europa League with the Blues.

Will OGS still be in charge of Man Utd come next May? The Flying Pig discusses in the video below…

Unai Emery. A man who has won three Europa League titles, one Ligue 1 success, and the Coupe de France on two occasions.

The point of all this? Solskjaer earns more than all of them.

Solskjaer, a man woefully under-qualified for the Old Trafford hotseat, a job of such magnitude, earns more than some of Europe’s top coaches and managers of real pedigree.

But why?

The former United No.20 had declared his current role as his ‘dream job’ upon his permanent appointment; he was clearly keen to be hired, and nobody else was interested in his services at the time.

United didn’t need to lure him into signing on a permanent basis with more money at all. Why would he demand more in order to get his dream job? More to the point, why would United offer him that much given his lack of experience?

God knows what went on during contract negotiations between Solskjaer and Woodward, but the decision to place him on a better salary than the likes of Klopp, Emery and Sarri seems absurd and completely needless.

Throwing money at people who clearly aren’t worth what they’re being paid is what landed United in the mess they currently find themselves in; this one incident, in isolation, is extremely baffling.

Newcastle United: Martin Dubravka’s Leicester heroics should pose as a warning sign

No Lejuene? No problem!

On the face of it, this seems to be have been the motto as Newcastle United pulled off an impressive win at Leicester City. However, it was mostly due to Martin Dubravka’s excellence in goal which actually earned them all three points.

Indeed, the towering goalkeeper was like an impenetrable rock in goal, saving everything the Foxes threw at him throughout the ninety minutes. The Magpies didn’t even have 30% possession all game, yet their incisive attacking and warrior-like work at the back earned them three crucial points to statistically confirm survival.

However, Dubravka was made to work hard quite a few times. He made five saves in the game (stats via Fotmob), keeping the Leicester onslaught at bay. While the Magpies have much to credit their goalkeeper for, this cannot become a trend in their game.

While Dubravka might be a promising goalkeeper capable of winning points, he’s also capable of losing them. If his fluffs against Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves earlier this season points anything, he’s definitely error-prone. Further up the field, Newcastle’s defenders poured their heart into the game on Friday night, their work in limiting shots on goal needs to improve.

Rafa Benitez really needs to get them to dig deep into pressing opposition and frustrating them into releasing possession. At their best this season, the Magpies have harried and hustled the opposition and, going forward, the Toon have to make that the norm.

Dubravka’s impressive shot-stopping ability can save them every now and then, yet relying too much on him to save them can come back to haunt the Magpies big time.

Newcastle fans, are you impressed with Dubravka’s development this season? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Decisions to be made: Smith admits to Aston Villa dilemma

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has admitted that the return of Axel Tuanzebe from injury will give him a dilemma due to the amount of loan players in the squad.

Tuanzebe – on loan at Villa from Manchester United – has declared himself fit to return after overcoming the foot injury which has sidelined him since December.

Only five loan players are permitted in each matchday squad, though, and Tom Carroll, Kortney Hause, Tyrone Mings, Tammy Abraham and Anwar El Ghazi are also all on loan with the Championship side this season.

It seems likely that Tuanzebe will return to the starting XI against Blackburn Rovers after the international break, with Carroll the likeliest to miss out.

Smith, however, has conceded that he now has a big decision to make.

Smith told Villa’s official website:

“Axel gives me not only a selection headache, but a loan headache. You’re only allowed five in the matchday 18.

“One will have to miss out – I have Axel, Tom Carroll, Hause, Mings, Tammy Abraham and Anwar El Ghazi. That’s a decision I’ve got to make.”

Villa have won each of their last four in the Championship to move into sixth position in the division.

Smith’s side are next in action at home to Blackburn on March 30, before travelling to Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United at the start of next month.

Manchester United: Pursuing Jadon Sancho is a total mistake

As great as he is, signing Dortmund wonderkid Jadon Sancho is a mistake Manchester United should not be making.

The story of former Manchester City man Jadon Sancho is incredible, and we all know it.

The boy who never got his chance in the Premier League turned world-class talent by a simple sprinkling of faith of guidance from Borussia Dortmund.

If anything, the Sancho saga highlights the inherent problems faced by those climbing up the youth ladder in our country; the concern that money in modern football, and investment in excitement foreign talent, is squandering opportunities for our youngest prodigies.

Now, ironically, it is Premier League money that is anticipated to bring one of best young players back to the country.

According to The Sun, Solskjaer has identified a big-name winger as his priority next season – but is this the right choice given how weak they are in other areas?

Most likely not. From a financial and corporate perspective we understand the need for global clubs to sign renowned quality to maintain their profile, and Jadon Sancho fits comfortably into that model. But from a footballing perspective, we struggle to find any suitable justification for their interest.

Ask any United fan and they will tell you that the defence needs improving by at least three new signings.

Think: Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelöf have been decent enough this season, but they do not scream Manchester United starters to us; Antonio Valencia is due to end his 10-year stint at the club, whilst Ashley Young is getting too old and Dalot is developing.

Just a brief scan of the United team’s line-up reveals just how obviously top-heavy they are, and surely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is just as aware as every single fan in the world of that fact.

Of course, a new forward would not be scorned – just as long it is not at the expense of a world-class defender.

Manchester United fans, would you prefer to spend the Sancho money elsewhere? Let us know in the comments below…

Newcastle fans lavish praise on Salomon Rondon

[ad_pod ]

Salomon Rondon was on the scoresheet as Newcastle United recorded a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The goal was Rondon’s seventh in the league this season and there is no question that he has been a success since arriving on loan from West Bromwich Albion.

The Magpies will be keen to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent deal at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

However, they will surely not be the only ones, with Rondon proving this season – and indeed last – that he is capable of operating at this level of football.

Rondon took to social media in the aftermath of the Huddersfield result, which led to a number of Newcastle fans lavishing praise on the forward.

Indeed, many urged the South American to join the club on a permanent deal at the end of the campaign, whilst others simply hailed the summer arrival.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Aston Villa fans heap praise on El Ghazi after stunning assist

[ad_pod ]Loads of Aston Villa fans have been running the rule over Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke City, and they’re delighted with Anwar El Ghazi.January signings Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause were both very impressive as the Villans came from behind to get a point on Saturday afternoon, but it was one of the summer captures that really stole the show.Dean Smith’s side fell behind in the first half when Sam Vokes smartly back-heeled a Sam Clucas cross past Jed Steer, and the performance was really poor before the interval. While the arrival of Smith certainly hasn’t helped the defence, he has instilled a never-say-die attitude in the squad, and they were far better in the second half.El Ghazi has managed just four goals and three assists so far this season, but he produced a moment of pure brilliance to make the equalising goal, sprinting past several Stoke defenders before drilling a smart ball for Albert Adomah to finish.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are full of praise for the 23 year-old loan signing…

Thiago Almada, John Tolkin and 11 players using the MLS Playoffs to earn big-money transfers to Europe

GOAL takes a look at a group of players that, if all goes well, could be departing MLS after this postseason

It's the nature of the beast, isn't it? In this sport of ours, the world is always wondering 'what's next'? The present rarely feels as important as the future, especially when everyone in the game is one big move away from changing it all.

So, even with the MLS Playoffs underway, there is already one eye looking towards the winter months and the transfer window that comes with them. These are the games that really count, the ones that make the difference between failure and that ever-elusive MLS Cup. They're also the games that could earn players life-changing moves as suitors watch on to see how they handle these big moments.

As the postseason continues, several players will almost certainly be playing their final MLS matches. Others, in the coming months, will see both their own and their team's resolve tested by suitors overseas. Transfer season is coming, and recent history tells us that MLS will be a target for many of Europe's elite.

But which players will the clubs overseas be keeping an eye on this postseason? GOAL takes a look:

GettyThiago Almada (Atlanta United)

This is the big one, so we'll get him out of the way early. Thiago Almada is only 22 and already owns a World Cup winner's medal. He's learned from Lionel Messi and established himself as one of the next stars of the Argentina national team. All of that points to one fact: he isn't long for MLS.

It was rumored that he would leave Atlanta this past winter after tasting glory in Qatar. The rumors continued into the summer, although they never turned into anything concrete. But after a season that saw him score 11 goals while assisting 16 more, can Atlanta keep hold of him any longer?

Almada may already have gotten everything he could need out of MLS, and it does feel like a miracle that the league helped him develop into a World Cup-winner so soon. The next step, though, is to become an Argentina starter, and that leap will likely have to come with a move to a bigger league overseas.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesJohn Tolkin (New York Red Bulls)

John Tolkin has already written his name into Red Bull lore with his heroics in the final week of the season. The club's fan-voted Player of the Season stepped up and fired his hometown team to the postseason, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time penalty against Nashville SC to pull off the impossible.

He followed that up with a stunning free-kick in the Wild Card win over Charlotte, furthering his legacy at a club that has built itself on Homegrown stars in recent years.

Tolkin clearly has the clutch gene. He also has the confidence and mentality to take him far. The young leftback is a player that is seemingly destined for a big move, and it seems like this winter will be when that happens.

As things stand, he's right on the fringes of the U.S. men's national team, and with the Copa America looming, a move to Europe seems like it'll be what Tolkin needs to further his career at both club and international level.

GettyFacundo Torres (Orlando City)

Arsenal were keeping tabs on Facundo Torres last January, and Ajax were linked with him earlier this year, too. When teams like that are in the picture, it feels like its only a matter of time.

Torres took something of a step forward this season as a goalscorer, netting 14 times in 30 games after scoring nine in 33 in 2022. He's also continued his development with Uruguay, earning four more caps to take his total to 14 after earning a call-up for the World Cup last year.

As with Almada, Torres has everything in his favor: a good pedigree, senior experience with a top South American country and proven development in MLS. And, as with Almada, it's a matter of when he leaves, not if.

The question now is how far he can lead Orlando City before that time comes, having already helped carry the club to a U.S. Open Cup title last season.

Getty ImagesMiles Robinson (Atlanta United)

Miles Robinson's contract at Atlanta expires at the end of the season, and it appears he'll have some choices to make. He had been linked with PSV during the summer, where he could've joined fellow USMNT stars Sergino Dest, Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman. However, many teams in Europe will look at Robinson and see a major asset. USMNT experience, MLS dominance and just 26 years old… What else could teams want?

He's shaken off any concerns that were lingering after his horrible Achilles injury, which robbed him of a World Cup place. If not for that injury, he may be in Europe already, but instead, Robinson remains a key figure at the heart of the Atlanta defense.

He seems ready for the next step, though, as he looks to lock down a starting place for the USMNT on the road to 2026.
