Farhad Hossain stars in Rajshahi win

Away at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong were upturned by a spirited Rajshahi by eight wickets, thanks to captain Farhad Reza, who picked up five second-innings wickets to help bowl out the home side for only 155 runs. After Chittagong made 378 in the first innings, Rajshahi took a 75-run lead thanks to Farhad Hossain’s double century. Faisal Hossain battled for Chiattagong in the second innings, making 71 off 112 balls, but it was not enough for the southeastern division. Rajshahi needed only 83 for the win and they completed the task in 19.2 overs, with Mizanur Rahman hammering an unbeaten half-century.Dhaka Metropolis continued their excellent start when they beat Barisal by 237 runs in the third round of the National Cricket League at the Sylhet Stadium. After their victories over Rajshahi and Dhaka, they completed a hat-trick of wins on their return to the first-class competition by crushing a depleted Barisal side that was missing on national and A team duties.Set a mammoth 516 for a win after Dhaka had extended their first-innings lead by an additional 185 runs, Barisal battled haplessly on the final day as they were bowled out for 278 in 96.1 overs. Nuruzzaman struck an unbeaten 88 while Salman Hossain scored 48. For Dhaka, fast bowler Tareq Aziz took three wickets while Arafat Salahuddin and Mohammad Ashraful picked up two each. Two games ended on the first day with Sylhet breaking their five-year first-class duck by beating Rangpur by an innings and 173 runs at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium. It was also their first win by an innings since 2002.Riding on Rajin Saleh’s 132 in the first innings, Sylhet bowled out Rangpur for 138 and 112 respectively, with Abu Jayed picking up nine wickets in the game. The win would do a lot of good to the division’s psyche as they have been the whipping boys of NCL.In the other game that ended inside three days, Khulna beat Dhaka by 91 runs in Jessore. Dhaka were always behind the eight-ball after conceding a 66-run lead to Khulna in the first innings after Abdur Razzak picked up four wickets for the southwestern division. Set a 286-run target, Dhaka struggled as Kulna, minus Razzak, whose mother died on Monday evening, skittled them for 194. Left-arm spinner Taposh Ghosh took five for 51, with only Taibur Rahman scoring a fifty. The teams now go on Eid vacation and will return on November 12.

Gibson praises Bishoo's composure

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has praised the composure shown by legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who picked up four wickets on Test debut

ESPNcricinfo staff14-May-2011West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has praised the composure shown by legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who picked up four wickets on Test debut, as Pakistan were bowled out for 160 in their first innings in Guyana.”Judging from his debut in World Cup a few months back he has showed signs of being a very intelligent bowler,” Ottis said. “He showed he has the ability to handle himself when he’s put under pressure and that’s a very good sign.”He only had 226 to bowl at but he didn’t show any nerves. He has been very adaptable and handled the situation very well. Today, Umar Akmal came at him quite hard and he responded very well. He varied his pace and demonstrated he knows exactly what he’s doing.”Bishoo, who was the highest wicket-taker for his side with figures of 4 for 60, said his focus had been on getting the ball “in the right areas”. “I tried to stick to what I normally do,” Bishoo said. “I came here today and I knew once I got the ball in the right areas I would get some wickets.”When I came on to bowl I didn’t look too far ahead. I concentrated on what I wanted to do with each ball and how I would attack each batsman. I got a lot of support from the guys on the field and everyone in the dressing room. It was also good the crowd was behind me.”Bishoo, who was the highest wicket-taker for West Indies in the ODI series, said the wicket of opposition captain Misban-ul-Haq, who became his first Test victim, lbw for 2, set the tone for him for the rest of the innings.”My first wicket was a relief,” Bishoo said. “I knew I got him ‘dead’ in front. He’s the main batsman so to get him so early on was a great feeling. The team needed me to come in and do the job at that stage and I was happy I delivered.” Bishoo’s other three victims were Asad Shafiq, Akmal and Mohammad Salman. The hosts ended the second day on 34 for 2, giving them an overall lead of 100 runs.

Gambhir ton seals series win against shaky New Zealand

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
M Vijay was not at his most fluent, but barring that India had few worries in Vadodara•AFP

New Zealand’s one-day woes continued into a ninth straight game as their batting failed to cope with moist early-morning conditions in Vadodara. Zaheer Khan, coming back after injury, and Munaf Patel swung and seamed the ball all right, but New Zealand will look back at how unremarkable their response was. With the pitch easing out in the afternoon, Gautam Gambhir made the chase look ridiculously easy, becoming only the eighth captain to score centuries in back-to-back ODIs.From the time he won the toss and put New Zealand in, Gambhir hardly put a foot wrong, keeping his perfect captaincy record and India’s unbeaten home season intact. New Zealand’s openers gifted their wickets, the middle order went into a shell, and even though James Franklin and Nathan McCullum added 94 for the eighth wicket, it was never going to be enough. Not with Gambhir making room and peppering the off side with drives and cuts, bringing up his fifty in 30 balls, out of India’s 64 then.Watching Gambhir bat, the struggle New Zealand went through early in the morning seemed far away. Brendon McCullum, making a comeback himself, laid out a welcome mat for Zaheer, guiding a widish delivery straight to second slip. Martin Guptill ran himself out soon after.Between those dismissals, Williamson set the template for the day. His front foot went across to the first ball he faced. It swung in enough down the leg side to be called a wide, but Williamson had fallen over trying to correct the movement. Neither Williamson nor Ross Taylor could get rid of that tendency during their short stays. Taylor’s wicket, though, came in a tame fashion as he tried drive Zaheer on the up. The shot was played away from his body, and an inside edge ensued.Taylor’s No. 4 position has been a matter of debate, with arguments that he should take more responsibility and bat at No. 3. Williamson’s inability to counterattack only seemed to highlight that notion. For the third game running, he got off to a slow start, and did little to hit Munaf off his plan.Munaf loves to bowl back of a length, just outside off, and wobble the ball slightly either way. He tends to get a bit rattled when somebody uses that predictability to come down and hit him. In this series, though, no one has come close to doing that. And once Williamson allowed Munaf to do what he wanted, that lbw call seemed a matter of time with the batsman regularly falling over.Modern captains tend to go into the containment mode once the 15th over ends irrespective of how many wickets they might have got. Gambhir, who had put New Zealand in, was refreshingly old-school. When he saw R Ashwin turn the first ball, he set Test-match fields for Scott Styris and James Franklin. Yuvraj, at leg slip, soon came into action taking a sharp low catch to send Styris back. Daniel Vettori did a B McCullum, guiding Yusuf Pathan straight to slip for another sharp catch for Yuvraj, who later returned to leg slip to get rid of Gareth Hopkins too.Having fallen behind the over-rate, though, Gambhir omitted to use four of Zaheer and Nehra’s overs. Facing part-time spinners on a pitch that had eased out a bit, Franklin and N McCullum had little trouble building a partnership. It was almost as if Gambhir was not concerned at all by their stand. The way he turned out with the bat, Gambhir need not have worried either. After having been at the wrong end of Gambhir’s off-side play in Jaipur, New Zealand tried to cramp him up, and found that Gambhir was equally adept at scoring through the on side. He flicked the second ball he faced fine for a boundary. In Kyle Mills’ next over, he picked the gap between mid-on and midwicket. In Mills’ next, Gambhir started making room and went into his favourite off side. He capitalised on the correction on the next delivery, moving to 23 off 11.Andy McKay got the same treatment: wide ball, four; too straight, four; wide again, four. With time, Gambhir’s favourite chips over extra cover and midwicket came out too. He might have seemed to slow down after reaching his fifty, but he took only 58 further deliveries to get to the hundred.M Vijay didn’t struggle like he did in Jaipur, but had to stay content with being the lesser partner in the opening stand. And like he did in Japiur, Virat Kohli came out and scored a half-century in the company of his captain as India cantered home.

Newcastle must axe Emil Krafth

Newcastle United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven matches as they face off against Brentford today.

The Magpies are on a terrific run of form in the division that has lifted them out of the bottom three in the table, with three straight wins over Everton, Aston Villa and Leeds United propelling them above the likes of Norwich, Watford and Burnley.

Their last match ended in a 1-1 draw away at West Ham and Eddie Howe is surely hoping that his side can return to winning ways against the Bees.

Axe him

One decision the ex-Bournemouth manager must make in order to give his team the best chance of picking up the three points is ruthlessly axing Emil Krafth from the XI.

The Swedish full-back started at right-back with Kieran Trippier and Javier Manquillo both out injured and failed to make a positive impression.

As per SofaScore, he lost three of his five duels and failed to make a single tackle, block or interception throughout the 90 minutes, whilst making just two clearances. He also gave possession away (18) almost as many times as he completed a pass (20).

Former Arsenal icon Ian Wright previously blasted the defender as being “out of his depth” and ex-Magpies defender Steve Howey reacted to his comments, saying:

“I think the lad has struggled a bit, but he’s not the only one. He has been criticised very heavily, I think from Ian Wright, who said he was well out of his depth.

“There have been times when he’s had an afternoon of turmoil but listen, he could be a player that comes back in next season and gets better.”

Unfortunately for Howey and Newcastle, Krafth has not kicked on this season and improved on his troubling displays on the pitch.

Instead, he has continued to be a liability on the pitch in the Premier League this season as he has averaged a dreadful WhoScored rating of 6.31. This is lower than the score of 6.47 he managed in the top-flight last term, which suggests that he has struggled throughout the campaign.

Howe has confirmed that Manquillo has returned to training and the Spaniard is one option to replace Krafth, although it remains to be seen whether he is fit enough to start. The head coach could also bring Jacob Murphy back into right-back and play Miguel Almiron out wide if Allan Saint-Maximin misses out.

Poor attitude behind India's fast bowling woes – Prasad

India’s depleted pace bowling cupboard can be explained by a lack of discipline and drive among some of those in the attack, Venkatesh Prasad, has said

Sriram Veera21-Sep-2010India’s depleted pace bowling cupboard can be explained by a lack of discipline and drive among some of those in the attack, Venkatesh Prasad, the former India bowling coach, has said. The last decade has seen more than a few bowlers fading after a good series or two but that, he said, was because of their attitude and not merely failings in their bowling.”It’s about their attitude, it’s about their commitment”, Prasad told ESPNcricinfo. “Bowlers need discipline to get up every single day in the morning, hit the gym and bowl long spells. I have not seen many bowlers bowling one-two hours. You can’t bowl 20 minutes in the nets and then bowl 20 overs in matches.”Prasad coached the Indian bowlers from May 2007 to October 2009 and is now bowling coach for the Chennai Super Kings. During his India stint, he said, he found the bowlers’ work load in the nets to be inadequate. “I was very disappointed with the amount of bowling that was going in nets. And with the amount of training: they weren’t training hard, the bowlers weren’t pushing themselves.”Bowlers – he did not name any – could not be pushed to put in more than 20 minutes in the India nets, and he said that, as a member of the support staff, he could not be after them every day. “I can’t keep saying, ‘Come on XYZ, whoever they may be, bowl for one hour.” He said he did so on many occasions but it wasn’t always appreciated. “It’s a thin line. There were lots of players who, when you told them something, didn’t like it. The player needs to be honest.”Things can’t change until and unless the players are honest to their team, the coach and, most importantly, to themselves.”Prasad singled out Ishant Sharma, though, for having a “fantastic” work ethic, which complements his talent. “He’s somebody who works extremely hard at the nets. He bowls in the nets at the same intensity with which he would bowl in a match. He has a great work ethic.” He’s currently going through a lean spell which, Prasad said, related to his wrist not being behind the ball. “The fingers aren’t on the seam. He is rolling his wrists instead. The fingers don’t run down the seam to give back spin which enables the ball to land on seam.”He spoke about Ishant’s “bad phase” during IPL 2 in South Africa. “I remember watching on TV and seeing him falling away at the release and pushing the ball down the leg side. And to get the ball on the right line he was trying to bowl it from outside off stump but it wasn’t coming in.” The coach saw that Ishant’s bowling arm was not as high and straight as it needed to be. The collapse of the front shoulder that followed meant the bowling arm couldn’t get into a good position. Watching it on TV, Prasad says he felt “helpless” then. “He was spraying the ball everywhere. I think that’s where it all started. Then he was dropped from his franchise. That was pretty sad.” The bad habits had returned.Prasad remembers Ishant’s second Test match versus Pakistan in Bangalore and how things began to go wrong after a few overs. “In the first innings on the previous day he was all over. He was trying to bowl inswingers but was pitching it on the middle and it would go down the leg side.” Ishant would try to correct the line by bowling outside off, but all that happened is that the ball would sit up outside off and asked to be hit.”He was confused. I could see it”, says Prasad. “You must realise the pressure there for a player at that level is unbelievable.” He spotted Ishant’s problem, sat him down and made him go through the video. Then the two then went down the ground and Prasad had him practice the release. “I made him just stand and release the ball.”The wrist was straight behind. The fingers were on the seam. The wrist snapped into release position. Again and again. Prasad says, “There was an article next morning which said Ishant wasn’t ready to play Test cricket yet.” It appeared on the day he took five wickets. The treacherous wrist position can either be Ishant’s biggest asset or his bogey when the bad habits return. Prasad explains that, in trying to make the ball move in or out, bowlers tend to ‘roll’ rather than snap their wrists. “The right mechanism is to keep the wrists straight and fingers on the seam and give it a back spin.”It is what he tried with Ishant. “The wrist will take care of itself depending on the action; if somebody is side-on the ball will go away, if front on, the ball will come in. Of late he (Ishant) is rolling his wrists again, which is not needed. Something these bad habits creep in.”Amongst Ishant’s other peers, Prasad also talked about how Praveen Kumar’s talent should be utilised, “I would play him in Tests in New Zealand and England. He has a great wrist position, control and can move the ball around at will.” With Praveen, Prasad said, “it was just a matter of telling him not to try too many things. Work on the basic stock ball, keep doing it again and again before you try the variation. Set-up the batsmen better.”Prasad hoped Sreesanth would take the opportunity given to him again with his return to the team to play versus Australia in the Tests. He said, “What a talent. He should be able to play at least 50 Tests. He has everything; good run-up, fantastic release. He just needs to run in, hit the length around off stump time and again. He just needs that discipline.”

Northamptonshire squeeze into top four

ScorecardNorthamptonshire clinched fourth place in the northern group of the Friends Provident t20 as they eased to a seven-wicket win at the Emirates Durham ICG on Sunday. They booked a trip to Taunton for the quarter-finals on July 26 or 27 as they won with 13 balls to spare after Durham limped to 129 for 5 from their 20 overs.Northamptonshire had looked like winning by an even bigger margin when they were 121 for one with 5.1 overs left. But they lost Alex Wakely lbw to Steve Harmison for 35 and two balls later Rob White edged Gareth Breese to Phil Mustard. The offspinner enjoyed the rarity of delivering a wicket maiden in a Twenty20 game, but White’s 63 off 49 balls had all but delivered victory. He continued his recent good form by hitting two sixes on his way to 50 off 38 balls and also carved Harmison for two fours when the paceman gave him width outside off stump.Liam Plunkett took the first wicket when left-hander Chaminda Vaas shaped to pull and got a top edge to slip. But with 57 already on the board in the seventh over the visitors were well on their way.Albie Morkel hit Durham’s only six over mid-wicket as 13 came off their final over, bowled by Northamptonshire skipper Andrew Hall. Arriving in the 11th over, South African Morkel seemed content to push the ball around until that final over, when he also hit one of his two fours in finishing unbeaten on 35, made off 27 balls.Mark Stoneman was Durham’s top scorer with 36, but he faced 41 balls and hit only three fours before slicing to backward point in the 16th over. He was also dropped twice at deep midwicket, by Lee Daggett on eight and Rob White on 25.Durham had only 21 on the board after five overs when Stoneman survived a chance thanks to Daggett’s drop before Ben Stokes rubbed salt into Jack Brooks’ wounds by twice driving him through extra cover for four.Stokes made 24 when his weakness against spin was exposed by James Middlebrook’s first ball. It pitched outside the left-hander’s leg stump but as he shaped to play it through midwicket it turned and hurried on to bowl him.At a time when Durham needed to accelerate in mid-innings, Middlebrook conceded only six runs in his first two overs and the batsmen continued to show little sign of urgency until the final over.
