Janaka Gunaratne’s confident 40 from 31 powered Basnahira Greens to a challenging 139 for 6 on a slow Premadasa surface, before their bowlers ensured a 14-run win over Uthura Yellows in the Super4s T20 tournament in Colombo.Gunaratne arrived with his side struggling at 43 for 3 in the ninth over, after being put in to bat by Uthura. However, he quickly set about accumulating runs along with Dimuth Karunaratne, who took a cautious approach as wickets fell around him. Gunaratne struck two sixes off Jeevan Mendis in the 13th over to get the innings going, but lost Karunaratne after the opener went for a big shot against Akila Dananjaya in the 14th over.Left-arm spinner Sohan Boralessa was Uthura’s early strike weapon, conceding only 14 from his first 3 overs and dismissing Dilshan Munaweera and Angelo Mathews. But the spinner ended badly, giving away 19 runs in the 15th over, his last of the match. Shaminda Eranga had Gunaratne out to a hook before the batsman reached 50, but Kithuruwan Vithanage and Kosala Kulasekara ensured the final overs were fruitful, scoring 22 and 15, respectively.Uthura began with an assured 45-run stand between Mahela Udawatte and Ashan Priyanjan, but boundaries proved elusive after the openers fell, and the required rate kept climbing. Captain Dinesh Chandimal made 19 from 20 balls, and Jeevan Mendis 19 from 23, leaving Thisara Perera with plenty to do when he arrived in the 16th over.Perera had been in fine batting touch in the Twenty20s against South Africa, and he began well, gathering 17 off his first 6 deliveries. However, he fell to a mis-hit off a low full toss from Suranga Lakmal to long-off, taking the side’s chances of a victory with him. The Basnahira bowlers finished with good economy rates, while Lakmal was the leading wicket-taker with 3 for 20.

Dhoni protected from tough questions

On the eve of the Indian team’s departure to England for the Champions Trophy – their first assignment after a controversial IPL – MS Dhoni was barred by the BCCI-appointed media manager, RN Baba, from answering any question related to the alleged corruption issues in the league. Each time a question about the controversy was put forth during the 14-minute interaction, Baba intervened. It appeared as though Baba, who is from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, was under strict instructions to not let the captain respond to any query that was remotely concerned with the controversy. Before the start of the press conference, Baba had announced that the interaction was “strictly pertaining to Champions Trophy and no other questions will be answered”. But considering the number of arrests that have been made in the last couple of weeks, including those of four first-class cricketers, the questions had to be asked.Four times Dhoni was asked to share his views on the alleged corruption issue. ‘What do you have to say about spot-fixing? Has there been an impact on players going into the Champions Trophy?’ ‘As the leader of the Indian cricket fraternity, why isn’t that we’ve not heard from you so far?’ ‘Can you guarantee Indian cricket fans that during the Champions Trophy, there will be no mischief on the field?’ ‘Do you know Vindoo Dara Singh personally?’Baba waited for each question to be completed before fending it off by saying, “next question, please.” Almost on every occasion, Dhoni’s face turned blank. Only once did he react with his trademark grin. This was in stark contrast to a usual Dhoni press conference that often ends up as a light-hearted interaction. But considering that Indian cricket is going through one of its most tumultuous phases that’s resulted in arrests of players, bookies, film actors and the BCCI president’s son-in-law, everyone who had congregated at a five-star hotel next to Mumbai’s international airport knew this was not going to be the usual freewheeling chat.Dhoni had evaded questions during the last week of the IPL at least three times, even skipping what used be a mandatory pre-match press conference for captains on the eve of the final. However, with the Indian team set to depart for England for participating in the last edition of the Champions Trophy, he had to face the media on Tuesday evening. Finally, a seasoned journalist diplomatically asked Dhoni whether the team would enter the Champions Trophy with an extra sense of responsibility – the last question of the interaction.”As cricketers, we always have that extra sense of responsibility with us,” Dhoni said. “It is our job to bring people into the arena and to encourage the youngsters who aspire to take up (cricket) as a livelihood and as professional cricketers. There is a responsibility on us and hopefully we can fulfill it to our potential.”

Jofra Archer ruled out of West Indies ODIs due to thumb injury

England quick could be ruled out of a potential red-ball return for England Lions against India

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2025Jofra Archer has been ruled out of England’s Metro Bank ODI series against West Indies next week, and could be in doubt for a proposed return to red-ball action for England Lions next month, after sustaining a right-thumb injury during his IPL stint with Rajasthan Royals.Archer first sustained the injury while fielding during Rajasthan’s one-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 4. Although it initially appeared to be a minor issue, further assessments revealed ligament damage, and following the suspension of the tournament earlier this month, he did not return to India for this week’s resumption. He had initially been named in England’s 16-man squad for the ODI series that begins at Edgbaston on May 29, but will now be reassessed by the England medical team over the coming fortnight to determine when he may return to action.Lancashire’s left-arm seamer Luke Wood, who had already been named instead of Archer for the T20I series that follows in June, has been added to the squad in his place. Wood has played two previous ODIs in 2022-23, but has yet to take a wicket in the format.Archer’s omission from the T20I series had pointed to his probable inclusion in the second of England Lions’ two four-day matches against India that serve as warm-up matches next month’s five-Test series. The first, at Canterbury from May 30-June 2, runs concurrently with the ODI series, but the second, at Northampton from June 6-9, had been a realistic target for Archer, and could have constituted a first first-class appearance in more than four years, since a one-off appearance for Sussex versus Kent in May 2021.England’s selectors have subsequently named an initial 15-man squad for the two Lions matches, to be captained by Somerset’s James Rew and with the notable inclusion of Chris Woakes for his first matches of the season. There is scope to add further names to the mix, including Archer and Ben Stokes, who may seek further game-time in his return from hamstring surgery.Since 2021, Archer has been battling with a series of long-term injuries, including an elbow problem that required multiple operations, and a stress fracture of the back. He made his England comeback in May last year, in time for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, and also featured in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, prior to the IPL.

Pakistan Super League postponed indefinitely

The Pakistan Super League, the country’s franchise-based Twenty20 tournament, has been postponed from its planned March-April schedule

Umar Farooq08-Feb-2013Pakistan board’s PSL press release

The PCB and PSL Management after thoughtful deliberations with stakeholders and considering the desire expressed by them to give more time to prepare to invest in the League, arrived at the following conclusions:
1. The concerns expressed by the stakeholders on tight timelines for submission of bids and leveraging of assets, hold merit.
2. Several requests are coming from other parties keen on picking up bid documents to become part of this extravaganza and hence more time given will benefit the League and all stakeholders.
3. While a lot of progress has already been made in getting tax exemption for PSL (broadcasters, franchise, players, investors) from the government, it seems that finalization of this approval would take some more time due to procedures involved at relevant authorities, and the bid process would already be concluded by the time tax exemptions are granted. This could impact upon the valuations done by various bidders.
4. Over 80 foreign players (and growing) have already signed to participate in PSL auction but the process of NOCs from the relevant boards is still underway and would require some time.
5. Some scheduling conflicts that arose after PSL dates were announced could result in potential star players missing out on the opportunity of participating in PSL.

The Pakistan Super League, the country’s franchise-based Twenty20 tournament, has been indefinitely postponed for the organisers to sort out logistical issues. The PSL, which is run by the Pakistan board, was supposed to be held between March 26 and April 7 in Pakistan but a PCB statement said the delay was to give investors more time to submit bids and also to avoid scheduling conflicts with other cricket tournaments. The decision was taken on Friday after PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf met the Pakistan interior minister Rehman Malik in Islamabad. The postponement wasn’t revealed in the press conference that followed the meeting but in a detailed press release that was subsequently issued. The PCB has formed a committee to look for a slot more feasible to the investors to reschedule the tournament.”The decision to move away from the planned dates of the PSL is an extremely difficult one but for the benefit of all stakeholders and the league,” PSL managing director Salman Sarwar Butt said. “The PCB management has decided to reschedule the event and move it to a period where there are fewer scheduling conflicts, and the stakeholders get enough time to develop their business plans.”The PSL business model – unveiled on January 10 – was expected to fetch the PCB “in excess of $100 million over the years.” It was to feature five teams and 23 matches, to be played at a single, as yet undisclosed, venue. The PCB had also announced the base prices of players at a proposed auction though they didn’t reveal the pool of players who had signed up for the tournament. The board also invited bids for the broadcasters and had been confident of lining up investors for the franchises within a month.”Over 15 potential franchise buyers, around 10 top broadcasters and various potential sponsors from large business houses have collected the bid documents and shown extremely keen interest in acquiring respective rights,” Butt said. “However, there are several other investors who would like us to give them more time for our various rights.”Launching the PSL wasn’t a straightforward business for the PCB as no international cricket has been played in Pakistan since a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus during a Test in Lahore in 2009, and the country is still struggling with its law and order situation. The PCB itself has been hosting home series away from home, mostly in the United Arab Emirates, and no country is ready to provide No Objection Certificates (NOC) to its players for featuring in the PSL.The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) had also raised concerns over the security situation in Pakistan and warned players against taking part in the PSL, calling it an unmanageable risk. The original schedule would have also clashed with the pre-poll campaigns ahead of general elections expected to be held in May.ESPNcricinfo understands that there were suggestions to stage the PSL outside Pakistan but the PCB decided to keep it in the country, in line with the league’s stated objective of “improving the image of the country and revival of international cricket”.”There is no way we are backing down from our major objective,” Ashraf said. “We are extremely encouraged by various stakeholders including the broadcasters and financiers from across the world and looking at the response it gives us a lot of confidence that our league is a success. We envisage that as suggested, the shift in our timelines will drive more interested stakeholders towards PSL and make this one of the most sought after league in the cricketing world.”

Roach and Best make it West Indies' day

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKemar Roach followed up his five-wicket haul in Antigua with 4 for 70•DigicelCricket.com/Brooks LaTouche Photography

West Indies achieved what was expected of them after winning the toss and opting to bowl, that was to bowl the opposition out. Kemar Roach justified his captain’s decision with a four-wicket haul, backed by Tino Best, to restrict the struggling New Zealand side to 260 on a Sabina Park pitch which offered something more to the seamers on the opening day than the surface at Antigua. New Zealand, though, brought it on themselves with a series of poor shots and as a result they could never keep West Indies under pressure for sustained periods. The captain Ross Taylor said after the first Test that his team needed more centuries if they are to mount any pressure on the opposition. But once again, they turned in an underwhelming performance with the bat, with two batsmen, including Taylor himself, making half-centuries but failing to convert them. New Zealand had made decent progress till tea, but lost their last seven wickets for 99 runs to give West Indies the upper hand. The overnight rain had left some moisture on the pitch and that prompted Darren Sammy to give his bowlers first use of the conditions. His seamers induced mistakes from the top order with an incisive opening spell. Best, in for the injured Ravi Rampaul, made an impact straightaway, beating the batsmen with pace and extra lift from a good length. There was no swing on offer but movement off the pitch, which kept the openers guessing. A couple of outside edges fell short of the packed slip cordon, Guptill took one on the chest, and it looked like a wicket was around the corner.

Smart stats

  • Kemar Roach’s four-wicket haul is his second of the series (five-for in the first Test) and the sixth haul of four or more wickets in his Tests. Since 2009, Roach’s tally of 81 wickets is comfortably the best among West Indian bowlers.

  • Martin Guptill continued his good form with his third consecutive half-century of the series. In five previous innings, Guptill has scored four half-centuries and averages 62.4.

  • Ross Taylor’s 60 is his 16th half-century and first against West Indies. In six innings against West Indies, Taylor has scored 191 runs at 31.83.

  • The 103-run stand between Guptill and Taylor is the fifth-highest third-wicket stand for New Zealand against West Indies. The four other century stands for the third wicket have come in Tests played in New Zealand.

  • Brendon McCullum’s tally of ducks (10) is the fourth-highest among New Zealand top-order (1-7) batsmen (only includes innings played between No.1 and No.7). Stephen Fleming and Ken Rutherford top the list with 16 ducks each.

  • If West Indies go past New Zealand’s total, it will only be the fourth time they would have managed to gain the lead batting second against top teams (excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe) since 2009. Click here for a list of matches where they have gained the lead after batting first.

It came via Roach, though West Indies should consider themselves fortunate. Roach bowled it on the channel outside off, induced the half-hearted drive from BJ Watling, and the ball landed safely in Chris Gayle’s hands at first slip. But as is routine with Roach, the umpires checked for the front-foot no-ball and replays showed his foot landing on the line, with a tiny part of his boot behind it, and sliding forward. The umpires went by the first point of contact and gave the bowler the benefit of the doubt. It wasn’t the most convincing decision but Watling had to go.There were no such doubts about the second wicket though. Four balls later, Brendon McCullum got a jaffa from Best, which held its line on the corridor outside the off stump and found a thin edge to the wicketkeeper. Taylor had a close call first ball when the ball kicked up, brushed his glove and shoulder, and dropped wide of point.Guptill and Taylor, virtually opening the innings at 12 for 2, then weathered the storm. Taylor took advantage when Roach began to lose focus, driving the half volleys and spanking anything short and wide. Guptill scooped Sammy elegantly over long-on for six and Taylor too slapped one past point.Taylor was more positive after lunch, pouncing on some wayward offerings by Roach and brought up his fifty with a pull. Taylor had set the platform to score a century, but threw it away at 60 off a rash stroke. He was harsh on anything short and wide outside off and after putting away a couple of boundaries wide of point, he got too ambitious against a Best delivery which cramped him for room. Denesh Ramdin pouched a thick outside edge and Best celebrated his second wicket with his usual chest-beating theatrics. It increased the pressure on Guptill, then on 43. He was watchful for most part, as if settling to play a long innings, but was alert to anything bowled short. He clubbed Sunil Narine for a flat six over midwicket and brought up his third straight fifty of the series with a pull off Narine past square leg.The fight went out after tea, giving West Indies another opening. Kane Williamson had worked his way to a patient 22 before playing a loose drive against the part-time off spin of Narsingh Deonarine, offering an easy catch to Sammy. Dean Brownlie did nothing to reverse his poor form on this tour, nicking Roach to the wicketkeeper without scoring. The responsibility only piled on Guptill, who now had to shepherd an inexperienced lower order, already depleted by the loss of Daniel Vettori.A run-out added to New Zealand’s woes. Guptill looked in discomfort, perhaps with his hamstring, but his partner Kruger van Wyk took the risk of pushing for a quick single. Van Wyk punched it to cover but Guptill, who was struggling to make it to the other end, couldn’t beat the direct hit from Best. New Zealand had lost their mainstay and from then on it was a question of how quickly West Indies could wrap up the innings. After losing three wickets for nine runs, the last four wickets added 90, perhaps the only silver lining in an otherwise poor session for the visitors. Tim Southee and Neil Wagner swung their bats around to take the score past 250. Roach picked up his third wicket when he had Southee edging to slip and later wrapped up the innings when Wagner miscued a pull to mid-on. New Zealand couldn’t sneak in any wickets in the five overs before stumps. They will count on their four-man pace attack to take advantage of the conditions. Otherwise, it could be another Chris Gayle show.
