Liverpool's Jude Bellingham alternatives: Mason Mount, Nicolo Barella and the midfielders the Reds should target after calling off pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star

The Reds' hopes of landing their top target are over, so who else could they target to fix their biggest issue ahead of 2023-24?

If ever there was an update Liverpool fans didn't want, this was it. For months, the idea of Jude Bellingham arriving at Anfield this summer has provided some comfort for supporters amid the Reds' underwhelming, and at times infuriating, campaign.

Now, though, that comfort has been ripped away. GOAL confirmed on Tuesday that Liverpool are ready to move on from their Bellingham pursuit, deciding that they cannot afford the Borussia Dortmund star when they need a whole clutch of new players this summer to arrest this season's considerable drop in standards.

Jurgen Klopp has spoken publicly of the need for "a big summer", and with the likes of Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all out of contract at the end of the season, it is safe to assume that work is already underway to identify potential summer targets, even if the club's struggle to secure Champions League qualification provides an unwanted obstacle, and distraction, to their plans.

🚨 MUST READ: No Bellingham, no perfect summer for desperate Liverpool

Bellingham, of course, was the dream, but as Klopp pointed out recently, there are a lot of talented footballers available for a club like Liverpool. And according to sources familiar with the situation at Anfield, there is a long list of potential summer targets, whether they land a top-four finish or not.

With that in mind, GOAL takes a look at some players who could, or indeed should, find themselves on the Reds’ radar…

    Moises Caicedo

The Brighton midfielder is a player who is clearly destined for a Champions League club, and was pursued strongly by Premier League leaders Arsenal, as well as big-spending Chelsea, at the end of the January window.

Brighton, though, stood firm despite the Ecuadorian stating publicly his desire to leave. Caicedo has since signed a new deal at the Amex Stadium, although many suspect that is more about protecting his value than any long-term desire to remain on the South Coast.

Liverpool sources have previously played down the club's interest in the 21-year-old, but Caicedo's age and all-round skillset would make him a perfect fit for the Reds, even if he is likely to cost in excess of £80 million ($98m).

    Alexis Mac Allister

What about Caicedo’s team-mate at the Amex, then? Mac Allister, undoubtedly, is hot property after playing a key role in Argentina’s World Cup win, and like Caicedo has already been linked with a move to a bigger, more high-profile club.

The 24-year-old's father, Carlos, reportedly attended Liverpool's Champions League game with Real Madrid at Anfield last month, and certainly Alexis' blend of attacking guile and defensive output mark him out as a player who could make a difference to Liverpool.

Mind you, given the Reds lost 5-2 against Real that night, maybe the Mac Allister clan could have second thoughts on the idea of a move to Merseyside…

    Mason Mount

It is increasingly likely that the England international will leave Chelsea this summer, with Mount set to enter the final year of his contract and talks over a new deal having hit a roadblock.

Liverpool, along with Manchester United and newly-ambitious Newcastle, are all keen, with the 24-year-old having already appointed a new agent, Neil Fewings, in preparation for a summer transfer.

Mount, it should be said, has not had the best of times this season, but Liverpool are long-term admirers, and his hard-running, positionally-smart style of play could be very useful as Klopp rebuilds his midfield.

Expect the Reds to be very much in the race for Mount this summer.

    Matheus Nunes

Despite a mixed first season in the Premier League with Wolves, Nunes is a player who is very much admired by Liverpool.

Indeed, stories earlier this year suggested that an agreement was already in place for the Reds to bid for the 24-year-old this summer, with Liverpool having opted not to pursue the player when he moved to Wolves from Sporting CP last August.

Nunes, who has been in and out at Molineux so far, still has a lot to prove in England, but he is versatile and skilled, and at a cost of around £50m ($61m) would not break the bank either.

Mufudza, Shingi script easy Mountaineers win

In what turned out to be a battle for second on the points table, Mountaineers got the better of Mashonaland Eagles courtesy a solid all-round performance. First their top and middle order contributed cameos around brisk half-centuries from Roy Kaia and Kudzai Sauramba to lift them to 267 for 5, before seamer Shingi Masakadza and offspinner Tapiwa Mufudza took the new ball and claimed four apiece to derail the chase. Kaia and Sauramba both made career-best scores, Kaia’s 85 not out coming off 102 balls and Sauramba’s 75 coming off just 53 with a four and five sixes. For Eagles, the only showing of note came from captain Greg Lamb, who made 73 off 74 in the chase before his team fell to a 60-run defeat.Rhinos suffered yet another defeat – their sixth in seven games – with a four-wicket loss to Matabeleland Tuskers, who stayed on top of the table ahead of the tussling Mountaineers and Eagles. Rhinos chose to bat and the decision backfired on them, with seamer Thabo Mboyi carving up the top order. He claimed Bothwell Chapungu and Bradley Wadlan off successive balls in the fourth over, and Rhinos never really recovered. They ended with 185, bowled out in the 44th over, and Mboyi finished with figures of 7.2-0-21-4. Tuskers’ were rocked early in the chase, falling to 3 for 2 in the first over, but half-centuries stands from Godwill Mamhiyo and Brian Chari and then Luke Jongwe and Keith Dabengwa were enough to see them home in the small chase.

Barbados fight back from follow-on to stun Guyana

A roundup of the third round of matches from the West Indies four-day Professional Cricket League.

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Dec-2014Veerasammy Permaul’s 12-wicket match haul went to waste for Guyana as Barbados pulled off an improbable defense of a fourth-innings target of 69 to win by two runs at Providence Stadium in the third round of four-day matches in the Professional Cricket League.Barbados entered the final day’s play at 214 for 7 in their second dig, a 54-run lead after Guyana enforced the follow-on with a first innings lead of 160. Permaul already had 10 for the match and took two of the final three wickets on day four as Barbados only lasted another 5.5 overs to be bowled out for 228.The left-arm spinner finished with 4 for 75 in the second innings following a remarkable 8 for 26 in the first innings, opening the bowling on both occasions, to produce a career-best match haul for the second game in a row. His 12 for 101 replaces the 11 for 76 he claimed in Guyana’s 92-run win over Windward Islands in the second round of the competition. However, Dwayne Smith and Ryan Hinds sent Guyana into a rapid panic by taking two wickets each inside of the first six overs to reduce the hosts to 10 for 4. Opener Rajindra Chandrika made 30 to top-score in the chase, but the next best figure was Christopher Barnwell’s 12 lower down the order. Guyana was at 50 for 5 in the 21st over with just 19 needed to win when Chandrika was dismissed by Jonathan Carter.Barnwell fell to Carter seven runs later before Smith wiped out the tail to finish with 5 for 17 and Man-of-the-Match honours. Guyana had made 261 after being sent in to bat on day one and remained in control of the match up until the very end when Smith’s heroics ended Guyana’s perfect record. Bowling straight paid off very handsomely as a whopping 18 lbw decisions were handed out over the course of the match, seven of them claimed by Permaul.Windward Islands completed a comfortable nine-wicket win over Leeward Islands behind a Man of the Match performance from offspinner Liam Sebastien, who claimed his first career ten-wicket match haul in the win. Leewards won the toss and elected to bat first in Grenada but were bowled out on the first day for 101 after Sebastien wrecked the Leewards order with 5 for 39.Devon Smith cemented a first innings advantage for Windwards by making 145 at the top of the order, an innings which helped secure his call-up to the West Indies Test squad in South Africa in place of the injured Chris Gayle. Windwards eventually declared on 308 for 5 after 108 overs.Leewards turned in a much more convincing reply as 104 from Orlando Peters helped take them to 334. They were eventually bowled out in the last over of day three to set Windwards a target of 136 as Sebastien once again took five in the second innings. Tyrone Theophile’s 62 not out clinched the simple chase for Windwards to give them their first win of the competition while also serving to keep Leewards winless.Jamaica recovered from a disastrous start in Port of Spain to record an impressive 37-run win over Trinidad & Tobago. After winning the toss and electing to bat first on day one, Jamaica lost its first four wickets with the score on 6 but were rescued by a 145-run fifth-wicket partnership between captain Tamar Lambert and David Bernard, who made 87 and 65 respectively in Jamaica’s first innings total of 173. They were the only two to cross double figures as five batsmen were dismissed without scoring. Legspinner Imran Khan claimed 6 for 52 for T & T.Left-arm seamer Sheldon Cottrell thwarted any hopes the hosts had of securing a first-innings lead by taking 5 for 42 as T & T were bowled out for 131 in reply. Jamaica then made 196 in their second innings as opener Shacaya Thomas top-scored with 46 to set T & T a target of 239. Spinner Nikita Miller also contributed a valuable 40 late in the second innings for Jamaica and then backed it up with 7 for 63 to be named Man of the Match as T & T were bowled out for 201.

Hales ton too much for Sussex

ScorecardAlex Hales’ third century of the season saw Notts post a big target•Getty Images

Alex Hales blasted his third century of the season to help Nottinghamshire win their opening match in the Royal London One-Day Cup by 29 runs against Sussex at Horsham.Hales struck 116 in 115 balls and put on 139 for the first wicket with Michael Lumb, who made 77, as Notts made 312 for 8 from their 50 overs. That proved more than enough for a Sussex team missing the in-form Luke Wright through injury. The hosts were only able to muster 283 for 8 in response despite an unbeaten 63 from Steffan Piolet; Steven Mullaney taking 4 for 33.Hales was initially outscored by Lumb after Sussex had won the toss and put Notts in with the left-hander reaching his 50 off just 58 balls and including one big six off Steve Magoffin. Hales brought up his half-century from 73 balls but began to accelerate after Lumb was bowled for 77 charging down the track at Will Beer.Hales, 25, reached his century off 107 balls – his second 50 coming off 34 deliveries – having received a reprieve on 88 when he was dropped by Matt Machan on the midwicket boundary. He eventually holed out to Lewis Hatchett at long-on off the bowling of Piolet who finished with excellent figures of 2 for 35.That was one of five wickets to fall for 48 runs as Sussex fought back well with the ball with Beer playing a key role. The leg-spinner bowled James Taylor for 13 and had James Franklin caught and bowled to claim figures of 3 for 60 while he also ran out Riki Wessels for a duck with a direct hit.Mullaney ensured Notts made it past 300 by blasting three sixes in his 20-ball 40 before becoming one of Hatchett’s two late victims.Sussex would have fancied their chances of chasing down 313 on a good wicket with a fast outfield but their hopes were undone as they lost wickets at regular intervals. They got off to a good start as skipper Ed Joyce and Luke Wells put on 65 for the first wicket but they lost their way after Wells was caught at point off Franklin by Taylor for a one-day best of 23.Craig Cachopa smacked his first legitimate ball in English List A cricket for six before becoming one of Mullaney’s four victims as he edged behind to Chris Read for 22.Mullaney also dismissed Chris Nash for 26, Ben Brown for 3 and Machan for 43 as Sussex were forced to take risks with the run rate climbing. The key wicket was Joyce, who was superbly caught running backwards by Taylor for 59 off the bowling of Samit Patel.Piolet completed a fine game by making his maiden List A half-century but his seventh-wicket partnership of 55 with Beer, who contributed 23, proved in vain.

Sangakkara likens Pietersen to Malinga

Kumar Sangakkara likened the England team’s differences with Kevin Pietersen to Lasith Malinga’s presence in the Sri Lanka team, as he contemplated playing an England side without Pietersen in the Tests. Sangakkara has been a vocal advocate for an inclusive Sri Lanka dressing room throughout his career, and said England posed a less stern challenge without Pietersen in the middle order.”I don’t know the reasons for KP’s exclusion but the fact remains that he’s an amazing player,” Sangakkara told . “For us, it’s been like that with Lasith Malinga. He is very different in the way he looks, and as a person. Not everyone gets on well with each other in a team. There are certain people you might not have dinner with, but that doesn’t take away from the fact they will be valuable players in a national cause, going out trying to win matches.”Malinga has been among Sri Lanka’s strike weapons in limited-overs cricket, and has crafted a reputation for being the most consistent death bowler in the world. Those virtues earned him the Player-of-the-Series award in the recent ODI series.”Without going into details, we’ve had our own issues and difficulties over the years inside the dressing-room and outside it,” Sangakkara said. “We’ve dealt with that very well as a side, and having 11 similar players is definitely not a positive thing. Having different players, different attitudes, different individuals and bringing that difference into the mix but being able to commit 100% to a team cause – that’s the beauty of cricket.”Pietersen had had an impressive record against Sri Lanka, averaging 51.41 across 11 Tests. His most recent Test against Sri Lanka had produced one of his most memorable innings, when he struck 151 off 165 in Colombo, to change the game’s course and set England on track for a series-leveling win.”I’ve watched him, admired him and he is undoubtedly an out-and-out match-winner. Of course, as an opposition player I’m not disappointed he’s not around. We know what damage he could have done to us, and the damage he has done to us before. To not have him walk in – that presence he has – is a bit of a relief.”Sangakkara also said he would consider returning to county cricket once he had wound down his international career. Sangakkara prepared for the ongoing tour with two County Championship matches for Durham last month. The upcoming Tests at Lord’s and Headingley are likely to be his last in England.”A couple of seasons in England would be fantastic. I really enjoyed my time in 2007 with Warwickshire, and Durham have been great. I like the feel of county dressing-rooms. There is a huge amount of ability in them, and a huge amount of hunger. Durham have been exceptional in that sense. It’s something I would like to experience again once I’ve finished with Sri Lanka.”

Troubled Netherlands buoyed by World T20 showing

Anton Roux, Netherlands’ interim coach, believes his side can take plenty of encouragement from their performances at the World T20, even though doubt surrounds his own position and the future of Dutch cricket

Alan Gardner in Chittagong30-Mar-2014Anton Roux, Netherlands’ interim coach, believes his side can take plenty of encouragement from their performances at the World T20, even though doubt surrounds his own position and the future of Dutch cricket.Netherlands missed out on qualification for the 2015 World Cup, as well the financial incentives that would have brought, and consequently lost their ODI status, potentially making it harder to arrange fixtures. Roux stepped up to take charge of the team after Peter Drinnen left towards the end of last year and does not yet know about whether he will be asked to do the job permanently. However, ahead of Netherlands’ last World T20 fixture, he was more focussed on the fact that his team had made a positive mark at the tournament.”There’s a lot of uncertainty but coming into this tournament I didn’t want to think too far ahead for myself but more importantly for these guys,” he said. “From a cricketing point of view, this has been one of the best tournaments I’ve been involved with, playing in front of sold-out crowds every night, games going down to the wire, the atmosphere being absolutely amazing and coupled with some extremely good cricket, that’s all you can ask for.”To think about what the future holds, for me personally or the Dutch team, we’ll cross that bridge when we get back home. All we focused on was doing well with the cricket and I think we’ve done that.”Netherlands made history with the fastest T20 chase in the first round to qualify ahead of Ireland as the only Associate in the Super 10 stage, knocking out Zimbabwe in the process. They were then bowled out for 39 by Sri Lanka, this time setting a record low, but then fell narrowly short of beating South Africa before pushing New Zealand hard on Saturday. Those performances have restored confidence after a backlash to being skittled by Sri Lanka.”It’s more the boys wanted to prove a point to themselves than to the public, because the cricketing public back home, after the 39 against Sri Lanka, it was just ridiculous what they were saying,” Roux said. “I think we’ve proved a point to ourselves that we can definitely compete at this level and that to me is just an awesome victory for us, how the boys changed it around and got themselves motivated and fought all the way to the end, that’s huge.”Netherlands have been on the road for five weeks, including a pre-tournament training camp in Dubai, and have experienced the full gamut of emotions during their World T20 campaign. Roux said they began their preparations by watching highlights of the famous 2009 win at Lord’s over England, who they will play in their final Group 1 game on Monday. Both teams have been eliminated from the semi-final equations but Netherlands will be aiming to add to their scrapbook of the 2014 tournament. Even if they lose, Roux will depart with a sense of satisfaction. “One of the things that was discussed was trying to rewrite and do our own memories on this trip,” he said. “The Irish game was a world record on its own, so I think we’ve achieved what we wanted to achieve.”England have endured a long and trying winter themselves and may present a less motivated opponent than Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand. Netherlands underwent a light training session on Sunday morning and Roux said it was important his players were able to relax and focus on their own performances as they look for one last hurrah in Bangladesh before returning home to see the tulips in spring.”I think the challenge is not so much worrying about what England are feeling. There’s also a lot of drained bodies and tired minds in our camp, which is why today’s session was optional, to get our guys refreshed. In this group alone, apart from our game against Sri Lanka, all the games have gone pretty much down to the wire. That’s emotionally taxing, more than anything physical, so [the challenge is] to keep the guys nice and fresh and ready for that big upset again, because I’m sure it won’t be a walk in the park. It’s going to be a fight to the death – so hopefully we’ll be up for it.”
