Dean Kino resigns from CA, CLT20 posts

Dean Kino, Cricket Australia’s general manager of legal and business affairs and a key figure in the organisation of the Champions League Twenty20, has resigned from his post

Amol Karhadkar08-Sep-2014Dean Kino, Cricket Australia’s general manager of legal and business affairs and a key figure in the Champions League T20, has resigned from his posts. Though Kino’s departure comes a few days before the sixth CLT20 begins, the organisers believe the tournament will not suffer.Besides holding a post in CA, who are stakeholders in the CLT20 along with the BCCI and Cricket South Africa, Kino served as a member of the CLT20 governing council and as director of legal and business affairs. He was the face of CA at the tournament.Kino’s departure led to a delay in the announcement of three key CLT20 committees. Until 1215 GMT on Monday, the CLT20 website said its committee members were yet to be confirmed. About 90 minutes later, the technical committee, code of behaviour committee and medical committee were updated, less than five days before the first qualifying match in Raipur on September 13.ESPNcricinfo understands Kino has been replaced with CA chairman Wally Edwards on the CLT20 governing council. “All organisations go through attrition and new people come in,” a BCCI official said.Kino, along with IPL chief operating officer Sundar Raman, was vital to the CLT20. He was considered the brain behind the player contracts and financial arrangements with the participating teams. According to an IPL franchise official, Kino was as important as Raman to the CLT20 set-up. He was called, “a pretty key person, being the head of legal and commercial matters.”Kino was also an important link in the relationship between the BCCI and CA, working alongside Edwards, Raman, N Srinivasan and the ECB chairman Giles Clarke for the recent constitutional changes in the ICC. He played a key role alongside CA’s general manager, media rights Stephanie Beltrame and chief executive James Sutherland on the board’s current television rights deal, which reaped A$590 million and secured Big Bash League coverage on the free-to-air Ten Network in Australia.Having departed CA last week, Kino is believed to be planning the start-up of his own sports law consulting business.

Ninth straight loss for dismal Delhi

Kings XI Punjab warmed up for the playoffs with a demolition of Delhi Daredevils, whose batting failure sent them crashing to a ninth successive defeat

Isa Guha: Pietersen honest in assessment of Delhi

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKings XI never looked back after Parvinder Awana’s double-wicket maiden•BCCIKings XI Punjab warmed up for the playoffs with a demolition of Delhi Daredevils, whose batting failure sent them crashing to a ninth successive defeat. Kevin Pietersen made his only fifty of the season, but he had next to no support as Daredevils were dismissed for 115 with nearly two overs remaining in their innings. Glenn Maxwell got his first duck of the tournament in the chase, but for a side that had made 190-plus six times this season, this target was easy meat. They took 13.5 overs to register their 11th win in 14 games. It was the bowling that Kings XI would have wanted to fire ahead of the qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders. The attack did not disappoint George Bailey, and all his five bowlers chipped in with wickets. Daredevils did have a promising partnership, between Pietersen and Dinesh Karthik, and the duo took them to 44 for 1 in the sixth over with a flurry of boundaries. The promise was cut short by Parvinder Awana, whose double-wicket maiden stalled Daredevils’ progress. Karthik tried to turn one from off to leg, and the leading edge was snapped up at point. Kedar Jadhav tried to prevent the maiden with a charge down the pitch, but failed to clear mid-off.Pietersen kept soldiering on at the other end. He struggled to find his timing initially, but soon did, and started piercing the off-side infield frequently. Twice in an over, he opened the face to pick the gap with cover drives against Mitchell Johnson’s pace.Speaking to the on-air commentators from the dugout after his dismissal, Karthik said it was a good batting pitch, but the rest of the Daredevils batsmen kept coming and going. Manoj Tiwary was run out after a mix-up with his captain, and JP Duminy mishit a slog-sweep off the legspinner Karanveer Singh.Pietersen was the sixth man to fall for 58 off 41, to a marginal leg-before decision off Rishi Dhawan, with the ball arguably going down the leg side. The seventh wicket summed it up for Daredevils. Karanveer bowled a wide half-tracker, and Jimmy Neesham sliced a cut to backward point. The tail fell apart in no time to the left-arm spinner Akshar Patel.Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat worked up some pace and bounce, and reduced Kings XI to 16 for 2, the second wicket falling when Maxwell mishit a slog to Pietersen at mid-off. That was to be it for Daredevils as Manan Vohra and David Miller added 96 in ten overs to finish the match.Vohra impressed with his uninhibited hitting again on his way to 47 off 38, and Miller went slightly quicker to end on an unbeaten 47 off 34. The match was played in overcast and very windy conditions, and the drizzle became heavier just as Vohra fell four runs short of victory. Daredevils’ hopes had been washed away long before that.

Shrubsole, Gunn steamroll India Women

England seamers Anya Shrubsole and Jenny Gunn pushed India’s campaign in the Women’s World T20 further off course with a resounding five-wicket loss, their second in as many matches

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-2014
ScorecardAnya Shrubsole refused to let India Women off the hook•ICCIndia’s campaign in the Women’s World T20 slipped further off course as they suffered a heavy five-wicket loss to England in Sylhet. Anya Shrubsole and Jenny Gunn wrecked the batting line-up, which if not for Mithali Raj’s half-century might have presented a grimmer sight than the eventual 98 for 9.The two England seamers were remarkably effective, accounting for six batsmen and costing only 21 runs from their full quota. The fielders backed them up too, with Lydia Greenway picking up a sharp catch and effecting a difficult run-out early on. Shrubsole was judged Player of the Match for figures of 4-1-6-3.India seemed to have exhausted their stock of good luck after winning the toss as they slumped to 31 for 5 in the ninth over, with all those dismissed failing to reach double-figures. At the other end, the captain Raj struck a doughty 56-ball 57, including eight fours to keep her side afloat. Her dismissal in the 17th over ended all hopes for late acceleration, but India managed to last the 20 overs.Seamer Soniya Dabir orchestrated a minor top-order stutter during England’s chase, but England knew they had enough time to overhaul the target. Opener Sarah Taylor had afforded her side some momentum at the top with a 29-ball 28 and Greenway came in at No. 4 to hold one end up. There was a bit of excitement at the back end when Natalie Sciver was run-out off a direct hit, but by that time England only had 11 more runs left to pocket their first victory of the tournament.

Pietersen promises tribute to deceased friend

Kevin Pietersen has promised any success he has in his 100th Test to the memory of a boyhood friend who died recently

George Dobell in Brisbane20-Nov-2013Kevin Pietersen has promised any success he has in his 100th Test to the memory of a boyhood friend who died recently.Pietersen, who will become the 10th England player to reach the 100 Test landmark when England begin their Ashes campaign in Brisbane on Thursday, was granted compassionate leave at the start of the tour to fly to South Africa to deliver the eulogy at the funeral of Jon Cole-Edwardes who died from a rare form of cancer on September 27 aged just 33.”I got to say goodbye to him 18 hours before he passed away and left us,” Pietersen said. “He left his wife and twins behind.”He was my best mate who I grew up with as a kid and losing him has really hurt me over the last month or so. It has been bad. I grew up with this guy since I was a baby and every single holiday we went on together, literally he is like my brother and saying goodbye to him 18 hours beforehand was just so tough.”I will be thinking about him if I get a big one here, I’ve been thinking about black armbands and stuff, but I don’t want to get the violin out and all that. I’d rather just concentrate on things. I’ve been speaking with his mum and yesterday she said ‘Jon will be watching’.”Pietersen admitted the bereavement had put his cricketing career into perspective.”This cricket malarkey is simple,” he said. “I had to go and do a eulogy at his funeral on the Saturday when the guys were already here. I was a shambles there.”He also admitted there had been times during the ‘text-gate’ episode in 2012 when he thought he would never represent England again. Now, though, he insisted the dressing room environment was “fantastic” and, as well as crediting improved communication, also accepted that all parties had “grown up”.”There probably were a few occasions [when I thought I may not play again], yes,” Pietersen said. “Emails were flying around and telephone conversations were being had. I think this stuff is for when I finish my career. I will give a very good explanation as to how things were and how things weren’t when I’m done.”It’s a nicer environment now I think. I’ve seen comments from the players that we all made mistakes last year. And we’ve all grown up and actually grown a lot tighter.”If you look at the environment now it’s absolutely fantastic and I’m not lying I’m being dead straight. We’re all having so much fun and that front page [of an Australian tabloid which suggested Pietersen was unpopular with his England teammates] was so funny because 10 hours before that we’d all had an amazing team dinner. We all had such a great time in Sydney, such a great time together, that when you see a front page like that it just makes me laugh.”Last year there was a bit of treading on eggshells and pussy-footing around, whereas now the boys have acknowledged that it is time to do some business as an England team and that is what we are here to do.”While Pietersen reiterated his desire to play on until at least the 2015 World Cup, he accepted he may require minor knee surgery at some stage as an indirect result of the bone bruising he suffered in New Zealand early this year. “Clearly the knee is something that I will have to get looked at and get sorted,” he said. “But if it does need an op it won’t be a big one because the bone damage is all sorted. It’s just a little bit of niggly bits and pieces, which is actually minor. It just causes a bit of discomfort on delivery when I bend down but since I’ve had the injection it’s been fine. That just masks the issue so it’s up to me to make sure I do all the hard yards and all the bits and pieces to keep me good.”I want to enjoy the next two or three years of international cricket for England because last year wasn’t fun. I can make it a lot more fun and so can the team, and we’re all doing that at the moment.”

Another all-too-easy victory for India

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma helped India cruise home with a century stand•Associated Press

India have had little to complain about on this tour. The series was sealed at the earliest possible opportunity, and their other target of trying out some fringe players is also working well. Ambati Rayudu made a big contribution on his debut, another new face Jaydev Unadkat was the bowling star in the second ODI and the third India player to debut this series, Mohit Sharma, turned in an impressive performance as Zimbabwe were rolled over for 144 in the fourth ODI.One of their minor gripes could be that Cheteshwar Pujara’s much-awaited bow in limited-overs cricket didn’t go to plan, with Pujara inside-edging Tendai Chatara for 13. They would have also liked this second-string squad to have been tested more by Zimbabwe, who have been disappointingly limp, rarely putting India under pressure. In Harare, Zimbabwe’s batsmen could at least fall back on the excuse that the new balls curved around extravagantly in the first hour but even against the easier conditions in Bulawayo they came up short. Zimbabwe’s troubles were highlighted by the first ball itself, as Mohit served up a beauty that beat Vusi Sibanda and zipped perilously close to the top of the stumps.Mohit has played only six domestic one-dayers so far, but he showed no nerves in his opening over as he delivered an inswinger, outswinger and a bouncer, all with superb control. He beat the inside-edge and the outside-edge regularly in his opening spell, and even showed off the back-of-the-hand slower ball which served him so well in his spotlight-grabbing IPL season this year.As ever, Zimbabwe’s openers were cagey at the start, with Sibanda taking 16 deliveries to get off the mark. Mohit, with the experience of only six domestic one-dayers, showed no nerves as he maintained a tight line and length with the new ball, before his persistent probing was rewarded with the wicket of Sikandar Raza, nicking through to the keeper.Zimbabwe then began to be more adventurous despite the disciplined bowling, with Hamilton Masakadza effortlessly whipping Mohammed Shami over square leg for six. Just as the partnership was developing, Ravindra Jadeja’s accurate arm struck again, with a bullet throw to the stumps that left Masakadza repenting attempting a quick single. The introduction of spin hampered Zimbabwe further, as Jadeja extended Brendan Taylor’s horror run. Taylor hasn’t been in form this year, and was mortified to be adjudged lbw for a duck to a delivery that was clearly sliding down. In the next over, Jaydev Unadkat knocked over Sean Williams’ off stump after the batsman missed a straight one. When Jadeja removed the opener Sibanda in the 16th over, Zimbabwe were in serious trouble and India’s most dangerous bowler of the series, Amit Mishra, hadn’t come on to bowl yet.Elton Chigumbura has been Zimbabwe’s most successful batsman this series, and once again he was called on to right things after the specialist batsmen floundered. With the help of Malcolm Waller, he defied India for over 20 overs, generally playing it safe though there were some eye-catching strokes like the powerful loft over Mishra’s head for four. Waller also took his time before latching on to the loose deliveries on offer, like a flighted full toss from Mishra that was swatted for four. With the batting Powerplay taken, Waller swung a shortish ball from Shami for six and Zimbabwe looked for a late flourish. There was no late flourish, however, as Mohit returned to break the 80-run stand, getting Waller to edge behind. The innings didn’t last too long after that as Zimbabwe’s tail was clueless against Mishra, but it lasted long enough for Chigumbura to complete a well-made half-century.Zimbabwe’s 144 was never going to be much of a challenge for India, who took their time in completing the win. Pujara departed early, and the team management wisely decided against sending in the in-form Virat Kohli, giving Suresh Raina the chance to spend some time in the middle. Rohit Sharma has also had a lean run in this series, and he cashed in at a venue which must rank among his favourites – his only two previous innings for India at the Queens Sports Club were centuries. He added an unbeaten 64 to that, and Raina too helped himself to a half-century as the pair put on 122 to complete another all-too-easy victory for India.

Tharanga century leads Rest of Sri Lanka to victory

ScorecardFile photo: Upul Tharanga’s century helped rescue Rest of Sri Lanka after initial some setbacks•AFP

Rest of Sri Lanka snuck home with two balls to spare and three wickets in hand against SLC Combined, to score their third win in as many matches in the List A tri-series in Pallekele. Upul Tharanga held Rest of Sri Lanka’s innings together through a top order collapse, hitting 102 from 121 balls, before Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath combined to propel their side to victory in the late overs. SLC Combined had made 258 for 8 from their 50 overs, thanks largely to Kaushal Silva’s 99 and Jehan Mubarak’s 54.Having sent SLC Combined in to bat, Rest of Sri Lanka made two early breakthroughs through offspinner Perera and Nuwan Kulasekara, before Silva and Mubarak forged a 109-run partnership that arrested the slide. Sachithra Serasinghe joined Silva in the middle after Chanaka Welegedara had dismissed Mubarak in the 28th over, and the pair added a further 63 before Serasinghe fell for 38. Dilhara Lokuhettige provided the late-innings impetus, hitting two fours and a six in his 29-ball 35, that took his side beyond 250 after Kulasekara had Silva caught behind, one run short of a century, in the 48th over. Kulasekara collected the best figures of the bowlers again, taking 3 for 45 from his 10.Seam bowlers Dilhara Lokuhettige and Isuru Udana combined to take five top order wickets in Rest of Sri Lanka’s chase, but Tharanga eventually found a resolute partner in Chamara Kapugedara, and the pair put on 95 after their side had been reduced to 80 for 4. Tharanga’s hundred featured 12 fours and one six, but he was dismissed soon after reaching it. That wicket, and Kapugedara’s soon after, left Rest of Sri Lanka at 188 for 6 in the 41st over, with 61 runs still required, but Perera and Herath, surged towards the target, after coming together in the 44th over, and hit 54 runs in six overs to secure the win. Lokuhettige took 3 for 38 from his 10 overs.Rest of Sri Lanka play Sri Lanka A in the next match on Friday.
