Trott puts tough times behind him

When Chris Gayle arrived in Cape Town this week, he hijacked a press conference for the South African media and inquired: “Are you ready for me?” It was a fair question, on the evidence of Friday’s first T20, but there was never likely to be such cheek from Jonathan Trott, even though it is his home city. Trott and the ECB had turned down a request for an interview from the prestigious BBC Today programme, despite not having to contend with John Humphrys. One short appearance after net practice, the England Lions coach in tow, was to be the extent of any questioning.More than a year after the abrupt cessation of his international career, Trott was under the radar in the beautiful club ground at Claremont, a few Gayle clouts away from Newlands. Trott’s doings will be of little interest in these parts unless he returns as a member of England’s tour party later this year. The good news, though, is that he looks and feels abundantly healthy. This short Lions trip represents the ideal rehabilitation for Trott following his return from Australia last winter with a stress-related illness. For a start, the Cape is where he grew up and Cape Town holds an equal place in his affections with his adopted home of Birmingham. “There are no family members coming to watch me play and this is more a holiday destination now,” he said.Jonathan Trott will captain the Lions in two unofficial Tests against South Africa A•Getty Images

South Africans who make their living in England are, of course, under pressure to state that they prefer UK hot spots, although Kevin Pietersen, who has been in touch with Trott, famously did not care for Black Country accents. Trott will be commencing the first-class leg of this tour with a match against South Africa A in Paarl this Sunday. His opposite number as captain, Rory Kleinveldt, played with him at both school level and for Western Province. “I am not surprising Trotty is making a comeback,” Kleinveldt said. “He has always been a fighter.”The pitch, examined on Friday by Trott and Mark Robinson, who is coaching the Lions along with Andy Flower, is expected to be a flat one. Yet, recalling what happened when Mitchell Johnson was unleashed on Trott in Australia, Vincent Barnes, the South Africa A coach, was unequivocal: “We’ll be bowling fourth stump at him – with the odd bouncer.” So we shall glean more at the end of this match and the second first-class fixture in Bloemfontein about whether Trott can meet the challenge to revive his career and add to his still impressive Test statistics of 3,763 runs at an average of 46.45.There is no mistaking his intention to do so. “I speak to Alastair Cook now and again when he is not busy, although the selectors have not spoken to me,” he said. “But they do not send players on this kind of tour without having an eye to them coming back into the England side. It has been pretty hard to have been out for some time. It’s definitely a learning curve and I look back on a period when I have definitely grown as a person. I found a bit of form with Warwickshire – it was not all plain sailing, there were some tough times I had to go through again. But I managed to come through them, that’s the pleasing bit.” Then, a none-too-thinly veiled remark: “This kind of tour will benefit anyone coming back to play for England against South Africa at the end of the year.”Returning for England in his homeland, rather than suffer the potential stress of another Ashes series this summer, could well be ideal for Trott, for he knows the pitches and the people so well. He has made a good start: 79 from 127 balls in the Lions’ first match in Soweto this week. Now 33, he intends to continue playing for as long as he can. “Until I am 45,” he said. “No, I’m joking – 38 at least.” Lions’ tours are drawn up to engender self-belief. “I would not have been as confident a cricketer had I not been on one before.”And he did not contemplate spurning the offer of the captaincy. “As a schoolboy I really enjoyed it and I did in Soweto as well,” he said. “It is nice being able to guide a side in the direction one wants to go.” As well as having had conversations with the England captain, Trott has been in contact with Pietersen, who wrote sympathetically of his illness in his autobiography. Should Pietersen be afforded a return to international cricket? “It would have to suit both parties,” Trott said. Eventually, he, too, will write an autobiography. “When I am done. I have a few stories and experiences I want to tell. There has got to be closure.”Robinson, the Sussex coach who is here to oversee the development of a strong Lions side, emphasised the value of having Trott involved. “We are ever so lucky to get a senior player like Jonathan on this trip,” he said. “Sam Billings has already spoken of how much he has learnt from him.” And with it, perhaps, closure comes a little closer.

Então ele te preenche muitos lugares do campo.

Giles seeks ray of sunshine

There was no disguising Ashley Giles’ downbeat mood when he considered England’s continued losing run under his leadership

George Dobell12-Mar-2014

It was once said by PG Wodehouse that “it is never difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine.”While it might be stretching a point to describe Ashley Giles, the England limited-overs coach, as a man with a grievance, there was no disguising his low mood when he appeared before the media in Barbados on Wednesday. It is understandable, too. His side has now been beaten five times in succession in T20I cricket and has lost the series against West Indies with one game in hand. Furthermore, the batting appears vulnerable against spin – the top-order batting appears vulnerable against everything – and his captain, Stuart Broad, has an injury that might well prove rather more troublesome than the England camp are letting on. At some stage, his injured knee is going to require several weeks off and, perhaps, an operation. As if all that was not enough, Giles takes this struggling team to Bangladesh in a few days to contest a World T20 tournament for which they appear woefully unprepared. And he does so knowing that his application to become England coach in all formats might well be decided by the outcome. So Giles was noticeably downbeat and admitted he was concerned by England’s poor form. While he celebrated the encouraging performance of Jos Buttler in the second T20I, he stressed that the middle order could not consistently be expected to bail England out of a mess if the top order has failed.”Sure, we’re concerned,” Giles said. “We’ve lost five in a row. Clearly we’re not playing very good Twenty20 cricket and we haven’t done for a period now.”We’ll go into the tournament as underdogs. We’re just not getting into matches. That’s the biggest concern. Four of the last five occasions we’ve been three down at six overs. The other time we were two down. If you consistently do that, you’re behind the eight ball.”As good as the players we’ve got coming into our middle order, it’s very difficult for them to salvage games from those positions. Jos Buttler was fantastic and showed a glimpse of his world-class quality. But unfortunately we’re working from a low-base after six overs quite a lot. And from that position it gives you very little chance to kick-on and attack all the way through your innings. You have to go through a certain amount of rebuilding. So that’s disappointing and it is frustrating.”We’re consistently having problems with spin as well, so we have to keep working on those skills against spin. In Bangladesh it’s definitely going to play a part. We’d be naïve and stupid to think that probably every team we come up against is not going to open up with spin against us.”We have to try to find a formula at the top. I know you guys will say ‘isn’t that a worry?’ going into a world tournament that you don’t know what your best top three is, but before the one we won here, the opening partnership changed a couple of games before the tournament, so it’s not the end of the world.”The problem for Giles is instilling confidence into a group of players who are beginning to become uncomfortably familiar with defeat. He knows that, if England are to even challenge in Bangladesh, they have to play a brand of positive cricket that currently looks beyond them. But he also knows that, the more the side lose, the more hesitant and uncertain they will become.”Our message is, quite clearly, ‘go and express yourselves, we back you, go and play your way,'” Giles said. “The guys in those positions, we’ve backed them, we support them, we keep working with them and we need them to start putting in some results as well. They know that.”But I think, as much as you say that, you have to understand that guys who are struggling for runs – in the heat of battle, with options going through their head – are sometimes going to hesitate. And if you slightly back off that option just before you make it, then you’re going to get into trouble.”Losing isn’t great preparation. Confidence is important and winning games is always good for the side.”But the wickets we’ve played on against this side are actually pretty good for where we’re going and who we’re going to be playing against. And we’ve come up also against a very, very good side here.”There are signs, however, that Giles’ faith in his own team is starting to wear. He knows he lacks a spinner to compete with the likes of Sunil Narine, or an opening batsman to compare to Chris Gayle”We can’t ‘magic’ guys out of thin air,” he said. “West Indies have great personnel at the moment. We’ve got very good personnel, but very different.”But we have to work with what we have, and I think we’ve got some very good players in the side.”

A conferir o promissor duelo à parte.

Easy win keeps Glamorgan alive

Glamorgan now have to beat Yorkshire at Headingley in their final Group C match on Monday and hope other results go their way to make the last four.In front of a big crowd, Glamorgan cracked 303 for 6 from their 40 overs with Chris Cooke top scoring with 85 from 76 balls. In reply Leicestershire could only make 235 for 6 with Niall O’Brien making 92.For Glamorgan there were also useful contributions from Murray Goodwin, who struck 48 from 19 balls, including four sixes and Mark Wallace and Gareth Rees. The only Leicestershire bowler to emerge with credit was off spinner James Sykes, who claimed 2 for 37 from his eight overs.Glamorgan, who won the toss, were given a positive start by Wallace and Rees who amassed 84 in the opening 12 overs – 60 from the opening eight-over Powerplay – before Wallace was bowled by Ben Raine. Cooke and Rees continued the good opening, reaching 100 in the 17th over. But with the total on 148 Rees went leg before to Sykes, who struck again to have Jim Allenby caught at shot extra-cover.Cooke reached his 50 from 49 balls and struck Rob Taylor over midwicket for six as Glamorgan reached the 200-mark in the 32nd over.Glamorgan lost captain Marcus North caught behind but that heralded Goodwin’s productive innings. He began with a four and glance for six over deep square-leg, followed by a lofted off-drive for six before Cooke was caught at long-off off Raine.Goodwin carried on his assault hitting a no-ball from Raine for six and then scooping a four to long-leg, before clipping Shiv Thakor for yet another maximum. He seemed on course to equal the record of Stewart Walters, who posted a 19-ball fifty against Lancashire in 2011 at Colwyn Bay, but in looking for a six he was caught on the deep midwicket boundary off Nathan Buck.Leicestershire suffered a major blow in their reply when they lost captain Josh Cobb in only the second over after being caught behind off Jim Allenby. In the next over Greg Smith was also caught behind, this time off Michael Hogan, to leave Leicestershire struggling on 12 for 2.In trying to push the score along Ned Eckersley was bowled by Allenby as the visitors further slipped to 28 for 3. That became 53 for 4 when off-spinner Andrew Salter bowled Thakor. By the halfway stage of their Leicestershire had limped to 68 for 4 needing 11.75-an-over.O’Brien reached his 50, but from 84 balls with only two fours, and he was followed to the landmark by Michael Thornley from 53 balls with a six and four fours before he holed out to midwicket five overs from the end. O’Brien perished eight short of his century caught at mid-on off Allenby, who finished with figures of 3 for 37.

Knight Riders face a tall fort wall

Preview of the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai

Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)MS Dhoni will be key with his ability to hit slower bowlers with ease•BCCI

Big PictureKolkata Knight Riders were within touching distance of Chennai Super Kings just a week ago when the two met in Kolkata. Now, Super Kings are second on the table and are cruising ahead, while Knight Riders are still struggling to take off. They are seventh on the table at the halfway stage and need a massive turnaround in the remaining matches to finish in the top four. It will have to start in Chepauk, Super Kings’ fortress that teams are increasingly finding hard to breach. With the solid presence of Michael Hussey at the top, Super Kings’ powerful batsmen are being laid ideal platforms in every game. MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja are not being pressurised to resurrect innings and when they start attacking, they are not the easiest to stop. Their bowling, however, can sometimes be slightly vulnerable and the line-up lacks a top-quality pacer up front.Knight Riders could focus on these supposed frailties, but they have plenty of their own. Yusuf Pathan’s spot in the side is both a mystery and an embarrassment and makes one wonder about the depth of patience the management have, because as an investment, he is not making any sense. Then, apart from their big three, no one really has shown any consistency for the team to rely upon. In Chennai, the focus will again be on their bowlers and their ability to counter the local batting threat. Since the game is in Chennai, the offspinner Sachithra Senanayake will have to sit out this game due to the ban on Sri Lankan players.Form guideChennai Super Kings: WWWWL
Kolkata Knight Riders: WLLLW
Players to watchIn Super Kings’ last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, MS Dhoni raised the game against a tough opposition. He single-handedly neutralised the Dale Steyn threat and bailed his team out. He is one of the few batsmen who can change gears without warning and especially thrives against slower bowlers, mysterious or not.Jacques Kallis, one of Knight Riders’ marquee players, bowled and batted with energy against Kings XI Punjab, showing no signs of the injury that had put his participation in doubt. He picked up two valuable wickets and scored a well-planned 37 just when the team needed it. Knight Riders will have one thing less to worry if he can lend similar all-round prowess in future matches,Stats and trivia Suresh Raina is one short of becoming the second batsman to hit 100 sixes in the IPL. Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine have both taken 14 wickets this season. But whereas Narine bowls at an economy rate of 5.65, Bravo is expensive at 8.47Quotes”If we keep on winning, we will be in the top half. We have the belief.”

Fluminense, Palmeiras e Corinthians ficaram apenas no empate.

NO TALENTO INDIVIDUAL
