Celtic dealt Greg Taylor injury blow

Celtic have been dealt a huge injury blow ahead of their upcoming Premiership clash.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Glasgow Evening Times, Ange Postecoglou revealed that Greg Taylor, who has not featured for Celtic since the club’s 3-0 win over Ross County back in September, could be sidelined until 2022 as the left-back has undergone surgery on a shoulder injury and is still a couple of months away from making a return.

Speaking about the defender’s current condition, the Hoops manager said: “Greg’s had an operation on his shoulder, it’s about four weeks since he started rehab so he’s still a good couple of months away. It’s a contact thing where we have to be careful.”

Fans will be gutted

While the emergence of 19-year-old left-back Adam Montgomery has helped to cover the loss of Taylor, the news that the 23-year-old looks set to miss Wednesday night’s trip to Hibernian, along with several important fixtures in Celtic’s season, is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful gutted.

Indeed, prior to his injury, the £1.8m-rated man had impressed over his four Premiership appearances this term, helping his side to keep one clean sheet, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making two key passes, 1.5 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per game.

These returns saw the £8.2k-per-week defender average a SofaScore match rating of 7.15, ranking him as Postecoglou’s 11th-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

However, it would now seem as if the 56-year-old will have to make do without the Scotland international for a significant portion of the season, which will undoubtedly come as a huge blow to the Bhoys’ chances of reclaiming their Premiership crown this term, as well as making it out of their Europa League group.

Neste ano, o time conquistou o Baiano Sub-20.

Newcastle United can sign Aaron Ramsey on a free

Newcastle United could sign former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer in the January window amid speculation linking him with a move in the summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that the Magpies had made an enquiry for the Wales international as they looked to revamp their midfield, with Steve Bruce having sounded out Ramsey’s availability for a move away from Juventus.

Now, Alan Nixon has claimed that the Bianconeri are ready to let the midfielder go on a free transfer in the January window, with Newcastle, West Ham and Everton all keen on signing him.

Fans would love him

After reports initially emerged of Newcastle’s interest in Ramsey, Dean Windass threw his backing behind a potential move for the 30-year-old. Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “Newcastle would suit him. Why wouldn’t he go there? It all changes, the supporters coming back, get your career back on track. He will play in that attacking midfield role.”

Arsene Wenger raved about the Welshman’s ability to get into the box and find himself on the end of moves, saying: “In my head, Ramsey was going to be a player between 10 and 15 goals a year. He is a Frank Lampard type. He is (about) getting in the box and he has a huge capacity to run. Physically, he has a combination of stamina, power and his capacity to repeat high intensity is certainly the best in the league.”

Described as an “outstanding technician”, Ramsey would offer that same knack of getting into the box at the right times and scoring those poacher-type goals.

In fact, Lampard himself wrote in a column for The Evening Standard about the 74-goal star: “It will probably come as no surprise to people that I like Ramsey. Like me, he makes late runs in the penalty area and he showed that with aplomb for the second goal at AC Milan last week.”

If Ramsey could complete a shock switch to St James’ Park, then as Steve Howey says, “fans would absolutely love him”. That ability and knack of arriving late in the box to score some goals would ease the burden on the likes of Joe Willock and Allan Saint-Maximin, and give them another attacking threat.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are eyeing this Championship star…

Smith Rowe’s value soars at Arsenal

Emile Smith Rowe has been one of Arsenal’s biggest success stories in recent years.

After making his senior debut in September 2018 in the Europa League, the Hale End prodigy was forced to go out on loan to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig and Championship side Huddersfield Town before finally making his breakthrough in 2020/21.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta threw him straight into the deep end with a start against arch-rivals Chelsea – and the rest has been history.

The electric attacking maestro provided an assist for fellow academy graduate Bukayo Saka to score the winner in a 3-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium back in December 2020.

He went on to end the season with four goals and seven assists across all competitions, proving to be a shining light as Arsenal missed out on European qualification for the first time in 25 years.

Smith Rowe was rewarded with a bumper five-year contract extension, worth £40k-per-week, in the summer and was handed the famed no.10 shirt, a number that the likes of Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Robin van Persie, Dennis Bergkamp and strangely William Gallas have all donned in north London.

As of October 2021, the 21-year-old is estimated to be valued at a whopping €70m (£60m), as per CIES Football Observatory.

He cost the Gunners absolutely nothing, having joined the Hale End system aged just ten in 2010, so it only goes to show just how meteoric his rise has been in the past 18 months or so, and largely, that comes down to Arteta’s faith and coaching.

Dubbed the ‘Croydon Kevin De Bruyne’ by his peers, Smith Rowe has received plenty of glowing praise in that time.

“Emile Smith Rowe is just a really lovely player, isn’t he?” once claimed his former Terriers boss Danny Cowley, who also added (via ExaminerLive): “He has that ability to find space; he could find space in a telephone box.”

Ex-Arsenal playmaker Ozil dubbed him “the difference maker”, whilst former Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand has also waxed lyrical about the Gunners star. “He’s been a breath of fresh air and a big positive under Arteta.”

At just 21, Smith Rowe’s value and ability are only going to skyrocket even more but so far, the Gunners have certainly struck gold, going by the above evidence.

AND in other news, Arteta may have another Bukayo Saka in “sensational” teen who can help save Arsenal millions…

West Brom handed quadruple injury boost

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a quadruple injury boost ahead of their upcoming Championship clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Birmingham Live, all of David Button, Callum Robinson, Cedric Kipre and Kyle Bartley could be in line for a return to first-team action in Albion’s clash with Millwall this Saturday.

All three of Button, Robinson and Bartley had previously been ruled out of action due to illness, while Kipre picked up a knock in the Carabao Cup loss to Arsenal and subsequently missed the Peterborough United victory.

Meanwhile, centre-back duo Matt Clarke and Dara O’Shea are definitely out of contention for the fixture this weekend, while the progress of Rayhaan Tulloch’s recovery from a groin injury is likely to be assessed by the Baggies on Friday.

Ismael will be buzzing

While the ongoing absence of Clarke and the recent long-term loss of O’Shea are sure to come as a blow to Valerien Ismael, the likely returns of the quartet of Button, Robinson, Kipre and Bartley will undoubtedly have the Frenchman buzzing.

Indeed, Kipre’s return to fitness is perhaps the most timely for the Albion boss, as the 24-year-old will be a candidate to replace the injured O’Shea, although 18-year-old Caleb Taylor is believed to be in contention for the Millwall game, as is new signing Kean Bryan.

The return of Robinson will also be a major boost for the 45-year-old manager, as the forward has been in electric form for the Baggies so far this season, scoring three goals, registering one assist and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.42 over his four Championship appearances.

As such, aside from the stricken centre-back duo, Ismael very nearly has a full squad to chose from, something that bodes incredibly well for the club’s chances of continuing their fantastic early season form this weekend.

Leicester keen on Hudson-Odoi

An update has emerged on Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, regarding Leicester’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Football London, Leicester have made an enquiry over a permanent deal to sign Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea before the window slams shut.

The report claims that Borussia Dortmund are also interested in landing the English forward, but they are looking into a loan deal for the attacker.

Barnes 2.0

Brendan Rodgers could land a Harvey Barnes 2.0 with a deal for Hudson-Odoi on deadline day. Barnes has been a success since breaking into the first-team at the King Power Stadium and has been able to get fans off their seats with his exciting play on the wing.

He has a career average of 2.1 shots, 1.1 chances created and 1.5 dribbles per game, showing that he likes to make things happen in the final third – taking players on and either shooting or setting up a teammate for a shot.

His type of pacey, direct, play out wide could be exactly what Hudson-Odoi is able to offer to Leicester on the opposite flank. The 20-year-old has career averages of 1.0 shots, 1.1 chances created and 1.3 dribbles per game, although it is worth noting that the majority of his appearances for Chelsea have come as a substitute – skewing his per game averages somewhat.

Still, he could offer a similar type of threat on the right-wing to the one that Barnes offers on the left, creating a terrifying a attacking line-up for the Foxes.

Rodgers could have two players on the wings who are able to cut inside or go on the outside and are equally capable of having a shot on goal or creating a chance for their teammates.

Leicester have also reportedly agreed a deal to sign Ademola Lookman from RB Leipzig to further bolster their attacking ranks too, but Hudson-Odoi coming in would add real competition for places in the wide areas. Veteran winger Marc Albrighton could take a step back and be used in emergencies, allowing Barnes, Lookman, Perez and Hudson-Odoi to battle it out for their places.

With the Europa League, Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup in play for Leicester this year, squad depth could be incredibly important to avoid burnout – allowing Rodgers to rest players when needed. This is why Hudson-Odoi, who could be Barnes 2.0, should be brought in on a permanent deal alongside Lookman to complete a stunning deadline day.

Ex-Chelsea player Cesc Fabregas claimed that Hudson-Odoi has the potential to ‘become a terrific player’. This shows that he also has the potential to improve further and Rodgers could enjoy unlocking his talent on the training pitch.

Junaid six-for powers NWFP comeback

ScorecardBaluchistan’s batsmen showed more appetite for the fight than they had displayed during their embarrassing first-innings effort of 57 all out, but they still face an uphill struggle to get back into the contest after being set a daunting 393 for victory by Federal Areas. By the close of the third day, they had reached 147 for 3, thanks to 64 from Shoaib Khan jnr, and an unbeaten 36 from Saeed Anwar jnr. That target might have been more attainable had Federal Areas been bowled out cheaply after resuming in the morning session on 198 for 8 in their second innings. Instead they stretched their total to 303, thanks largely to Usman Saeed, who converted his overnight 21 to an unbeaten 87. He was well supported by Yasir Ali, who made 30 in a stand of exactly 100 for the ninth wicket.Ali then struck early in Baluchistan’s second innings, as Usman Tariq was caught behind for 11, while Sohail Tanvir, their first-innings tormentor, trapped Rameez Alam lbw for 13. Shoaib and Saeed prevented another collapse, but their hopes of victory are looking slim.
Scorecard
North West Frontier Province need another 67 runs on the final day against Punjab at Lahore, after Junaid Khan triggered a dramatic turnaround with second-innings figures of 6 for 56. Despite conceding a first-innings lead of 37, with Younis Khan adding only five runs to his overnight 70 before being left high and dry by the tail, NWFP roared into the ascendancy by skittling Punjab for 134 in 32.3 overs.Junaid, a 19-year-old left-arm paceman, was the stand-out performer. After Nauman Habib had removed Punjab’s captain, Mohammad Hafeez, in the first over, Junaid ripped through the middle order, reducing them to 75 for 7 before Mohammad Salman and Wahab Riaz staged a partial recovery. Salman top-scored with 35 before being bowled by Junaid.Energised for their run-chase, NWFP set off at nearly a run a ball before losing both openers, Yasir Hameed and Adnan Raees, with the score on 21. Rafatullah Mohmand, however, reached the close on 35, and with Younis still waiting in the pavilion, his team are now odds-on to complete a comfortable win.

Howey hints at Grealish replacing Sterling at Manchester City

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Manchester City defender Steve Howey has hinted at Jack Grealish potentially taking Raheem Sterling’s spot in the Premier League champions’ starting XI.

Both players started in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, with Grealish deployed in midfield alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho and Sterling used further forward in attack.

However, star man Kevin De Bruyne was left on the bench for the opening fixture, while Phil Foden is currently unavailable for selection due to injury.

When both players are fully fit, you would expect them to be selected by Pep Guardiola, meaning someone like Sterling or Grealish could drop out. And Howey thinks it could be the former, with Grealish likely to operate in his position further up the pitch.

When asked by TT who could be sacrificed in order to accommodate the former Aston Villa captain, the ex-City star said:

“Well we know with Raheem sometimes he didn’t start [last season] and that was without Grealish there.”

While it would not be a shock to see Grealish have to settle for the bench now and again as a result of Guardiola’s rotation policy, having signed him for £100m, it is hard to imagine the £300,000-a-week England international spending too much time out of the side.
