England's bowlers ensure the plan comes together

India can’t get a word in as tourists’ attack answers legitimate pre-series questions

Matt Roller12-Mar-2021A good team can adapt if things don’t go to plan. For a dominant team, things invariably do. It was a measure of England’s control of the first of five T20Is in Ahmedabad that their bowlers could stick to the blueprint that had been set throughout their 20 overs.Coming into this series, there were legitimate questions about England’s bowlers. Despite the side’s winning streak, they have leaked runs with the new ball and at the death across the past three years, while the absence of a third spinner in their squad seemed to demonstrate an obvious lack of depth in that area.In that light, restricting India to 124 for 7 provided an emphatic answer. Three wickets inside the first five overs through legspin and high pace set the tone, while hard lengths through the middle and more of the same at the death ensured India’s was slow and painful.Jofra Archer led the way with three wickets•Getty Images”The wicket was a bit slow so it was going to be hard to hit the length balls, but obviously if you bowl a bit fuller, then it becomes a bit easier,” Jofra Archer explained. “So the plan to everyone was just try to bowl length as long as possible and luckily for us we didn’t really have to change that – we just stuck to it.”In particular, it was the ‘hard’ length – balls pitching around eight or nine metres from the stumps, reaching the batsman just above waist-height – which proved particularly difficult to get away. England’s seamers bowled 46 balls that pitched in that back-of-a-length region, according to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data, conceding only 38 runs from them and taking two wickets.ESPNcricinfo LtdFurther proof of its effectiveness came through India’s boundary count in front of square against the seamers: one four through mid-on, another off the pads, and a single six over long-off. “Even some of the boundaries that they did get, there were a few through third man,” Archer said. “As a bowler, you’re happy to go for runs there as long as you don’t get hit where you don’t want to get hit. We’re at peace getting hit behind the wicket – that’s fine.”For Eoin Morgan, it was a night where everything he tried seemed to work as captain. He had offered enough of a smirk in his pre-series press conference to hint that he had something up his sleeve in a bid to address England’s impotence in the powerplay – they had taken 18 powerplay wickets at 48.05 in the last 18 months before this series – but few had predicted the first part of his plan.Like a poker player going all-in on the first hand dealt, Morgan threw the brand new ball to Adil Rashid, who had bowled a single powerplay over in his T20I career and hadn’t bowled the first over of a match since the 2011 Champions League. Rashid’s method was uncomplicated, and similar to his usual T20 plan: he used his googly and his slider to the left-handed Shikhar Dhawan, cramping him for room from a good length, and conceded only two runs from the first over.Morgan opted for aggression, combining legspin with high pace in a revamped new-ball partnership by throwing the ball to Archer. He struck early: KL Rahul, who has had the better of his head-to-head with Archer in the IPL, inside-edged a wide one onto his stumps, and England had the breakthrough that had eluded them so often.Sensing an opportunity, Morgan stuck with Rashid. As Virat Kohli backed away to the leg side, Rashid tried to cramp him from a length and push him even further towards square leg; Kohli’s bat turned in his hands as he looked to force one through the ring, and he could only pick out mid-off.Related

Rishabh Pant briefly threatened to throw England off, reverse-scooping Archer for six and whipping him off the pads for four more, but Archer’s nonchalant shrug in response added to the impression of calm. Morgan’s first change was seamless: Mark Wood, recalled to the side after spending the series in South Africa before Christmas on the bench, bowled every ball in his first over at above 90mph/145kph, and his sixth brought the wicket of Dhawan, clean bowled attempting to heave to leg. India were 20 for 3 after five overs, and the game was already England’s.Morgan shuffled his deck through the middle overs, with Rashid bowling a solitary over outside the powerplay, but again the plans were clear. Wood was introduced as a ‘shock’ bowler, hitting the splice and the gloves in his final two overs, and while Shreyas Iyer coped well enough by giving himself room, Hardik Pandya’s scoring was choked by England bowling into his midriff: his only two boundaries, off Ben Stokes, were off the shortest and fullest balls he faced. Wood did not bowl a single slower ball in his four overs, while Jordan and Archer bowled one and two respectively.

And while some teams would revert to their stock death plans of yorkers and slower balls, England saw no need to change as they copied the template they had set during a win against Australia last September. Archer, Sam Curran and Chris Jordan conceded 20 runs and two boundaries between them in the final three overs, hardly attempting a single yorker. The heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson said “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” India’s failure to land even a glancing blow showed the success of England’s.

ENIC could hire Frank upgrade who Carragher has “always seen” at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are stuck in a cycle of repeated mistakes, time and time again struggling to establish a winning formula on home turf and struggling also to weave Thomas Frank’s tactics into their identity.

Much has been made of Spurs’ attacking problems this season, but defensively, there are imbalances too. The north Londoners’ xGD (Expected Goals Difference) stands at -6.8, marking them 18th in the division for that metric.

Despite adding a range of talented additions to their ranks after winning the Europa League last season, the residual issues that stemmed from a torrid Premier League campaign remain, and Frank has to show that he has what it takes to wipe out the recurring patterns that are threatening an exciting season.

The likes of Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons were welcomed to the ranks, but Frank has yet to pull it all together

The potential Frank replacements ENIC should consider

It has been reported that Frank is not under immediate pressure in the Tottenham hot seat, but after picking just two points up from his past five outings, the Spurs boss will know that results need to improve, especially with the win over Burnley in August standing as a lonely win down N17.

Kudus might be the joint-top assist maker in the division so far, but Tottenham’s creativity is a big concern, and ENIC Group may have the perfect replacement they can fall back on.

Back at the start of the summer, ESPN reported Tottenham had whittled their shortlist down to two candidates, Frank being one, Fulham manager Marco Silva being the other.

The Portuguese tactician is a well-seasoned Premier League manager, having led 221 matches across four different tenures.

Known for establishing stability and a clear tactical vision, the 48-year-old has earned his share of praise, with pundit Jamie Carragher among those to suggest Silva may well be a tailor-made fit for the Lilywhites.

Why Carragher has "always seen" Silva at Spurs

Carragher remarked on The Overlap this week that he has “always seen Silva at Tottenham”, with his blend of pragmatism and shrewd ideas potentially instilling the secure and balanced foundations the club have been lacking in recent years.

Implementing a 4-2-3-1 formation, Silva, whose Cottager side beat Tottenham away from home only last weekend, seeks to strike a balance between possession-based play and counter-attacking football, with both sides of that coin on show against Spurs.

There is an emphasis on overlaps and wide play that could also give rise to Kudus’ qualities. The Ghanaian – who England fans will be threatened by at the 2026 World Cup next year – has made a positive start to life in north London, but there’s a sense that there is more to come from the versatile wideman.

As per FBref, the 25-year-old ranks among the top 3% of positional peers in the Premier League this season for successful take-ons per 90.

Kudus needs to score more, and he also needs to make more of his inherent creative skills. Silva’s system could help achieve this.

Transfer reporter Dean Jones has even gone as far as to label Silva a “genius”, with his subtle and nuanced approach to the managerial game something Spurs may need to adapt to different situations and rediscover their fluency both in defence and attack.

Whether Tottenham decide to cut their ties with Frank down the line will be a matter of time and perserverance, but should an upswing fail to materialise, Silva could be the shrewd successor to finally take this team to a sustainable level at the top.

MLB Reveals 2025 All-Star Jersey But With One Major Caveat

MLB's All-Star festivities are coming to Truist Park in mid-July, as the Atlanta Braves are slated to host this season's midsummer classic.

The biggest stars from across the league will take part in the annual exhibition game, and as excitement for the event builds, MLB released a first look at the official uniforms players from the American League and National League will be wearing in Atlanta.

There are new All-Star jerseys every year, so the release of the latest edition isn't much of a surprise. That said, there's a pretty significant twist tied to the reveal of this season's MLB All-Star uniforms.

Much to the delight of fans, MLB is reverting its All-Star Game dress code back to a previous format, under which players would wear the jerseys of their respective MLB teams, rather than donning the official All-Star Game attire.

Here's a first glance at the 2025 All-Star uniforms:

With players wearing their team uniforms for the actual All-Star Game, these jerseys will be reserved for the weekend's other events, such as the Home Run Derby.

Players rocking the All-Star uniform during the All-Star Game been a major sticking point among MLB fans in previous years, as they made clear they longed for the days when players would rock their own team's jerseys. Calls for that stylistic change did not go unnoticed by MLB's front office, prompting the change implented this year.

As for voting for the All-Star Game, fans will be able to vote in phase one from June 4 to 26, and again in phase two from June 30 to July 2.

Possession lost 19x: Howe must drop 6/10 Newcastle star after Fulham

There was a flurry of late goals in the Premier League this Saturday, despite the lack of 3pm kick-offs.

Newcastle United’s arch rivals in Sunderland left it late to snatch a 2-1 win at Chelsea, but moments before the Black Cats joined in on the late party, the Magpies had already thundered home a last-gasp effort of their own courtesy of Bruno Guimaraes to get the better of Fulham by the same tight scoreline.

The beloved Brazilian would find himself in the right place at the right time to sneak an effort home past Bernd Leno, with various underperformers for the home side having their blushes spared by the Toon captain, once again, leading by example.

Newcastle underperformers vs Fulham

The Tyneside giants very nearly let the game unravel when Sasa Lukic equalised early into the second 45 minutes, after Jacob Murphy’s opener should have set Newcastle on their way to a comfortable three points.

With Sandro Tonali remaining on the substitutes bench, Howe stuck by Lewis Miley in the middle of the park, with the number 67 unfortunately quiet throughout his 61-minute spell on the St James’ Park turf, as seen in him only managed to win one duel when amassing a limited 36 touches of the ball.

Away from the promising 19-year-old, other more senior members of Howe’s team, such as Sven Botman, also didn’t have their best display in Magpies black and white, with zero aerial duels being won by the usually stern number four, actually resulting in Lukic bundling home the away side’s equaliser.

Arguably, even Nick Woltemade might well have trudged off at the end, frustrated with his individual display in front of goal, with the typically red-hot German somehow smacking the post after just four minutes from a well-worked Kieran Trippier free-kick.

Thankfully, Guimaraes had remembered to pack his shooting boots right at the end, after also blazing over his own gilt-edge chance, only this time in the second half.

Woltemade is unlikely to be axed, though, with his general hold-play making him an ideal teammate for the likes of Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon to bounce off of. But, one of the ex-Stuttgart striker’s new, well-established teammates might not be so lucky…

The 6/10 Newcastle star who must be dropped

Newcastle needed to pick up three points come the end of their tight clash with Marco Silva’s challengers, with the potential of just two league wins being on the board from nine matches played, making for very grim reading.

Dan Burn will be relieved he didn’t cost his team dear on their own patch, with the centre-back colossus once again looking out of his comfort zone when deployed to a left-back spot in the team.

Howe has had to resort to Burn being placed in this makeshift role owing to both Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall being sidelined, but with talk now centring on the fact they could both return come November, the 33-year-old’s days as the Toon’s starter here are surely numbered, which is only reinforced by his shoddy day at the office against the Cottagers.

While his fellow Newcastle veteran in Kieran Trippier, down the right channel, was amassing two key passes and winning a valiant six duels, Burn – on the opposing left-hand side – was lackadaisical with the ball at his feet once more, with possession relinquished a costly 19 times. Staggeringly, against Arsenal back in September, when Burn was trusted as a stand-in again, he gave up the ball a weighty 26 times.

To make matters worse, the normally imposing 6-foot-6 powerhouse would also only win a measly 27% of his duels during the 2-1 win earlier today, with his continued weak displays for Howe and Co. meaning he is surely on shaky ground regarding a starting space.

Burn might not even be able to push into Howe’s starting XI plans as a formidable centre-back anymore, owing to the emergence of Malick Thiaw, with The Shields Gazette’s Dominic Scurr going out of his way to hand the number 33 a low 6/10 rating post-match, who stated that his overall display was marred by too many occasions of ‘ball-watching’.

Thankfully, he didn’t fall victim to a game-altering blunder against Fulham, but if Newcastle wants to rise up the league standings quickly, Howe will have to select what he believes to be his best possible XI in the moment, with a declining Burn perhaps not in those plans.

Stefano Pioli sacked as Fiorentina boss amid winless start to season just four months after leaving Al-Nassr for Serie A return

Italian side Fiorentina have announced the sacking of Stefano Pioli as head coach. The decision comes amid a dismal 10-game winless run that has left the club rooted to the bottom of the Serie A table. Pioli joined Fiorentina following successful spells with AC Milan and Al-Nassr, having won the Scudetto with the Rossoneri.

  • Pioli sacked after dismal Serie A start

The Viola are winless in the league this season, with four draws and six defeats in their opening 10 matches, leaving them near the bottom of the table. Their strong start in the UEFA Conference League, where they sit top of the table with two wins from two games, wasn’t enough to save Pioli from dismissal.

The club’s official statement read: “ACF Fiorentina can confirm that Stefano Pioli has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team.”

Meanwhile Fiorentina have announced a temporary replacement for Pioli until a new head coach is appointed. The club stated: “Daniele Galloppa will take charge of the first team temporarily, starting from this afternoon's training session.”

Pioli’s sacking follows Fiorentina’s decision to terminate the contract of sporting director Daniel Prade.

Where did it go wrong for Fiorentina?

Italian outlet summed up Pioli’s downfall at Fiorentina by highlighting several key mistakes the tactician made during his tenure. It all began with an air of overconfidence that stemmed from his past successes with Milan and Al Nassr. The Italian coach often declared himself among the country’s top managers, even taking subtle digs at peers such as Massimiliano Allegri and Luis Enrique. However, this arrogance backfired as results worsened and performances declined, with Pioli appearing to lose confidence with each passing game.

On the pitch, Fiorentina looked disorganised and lacked chemistry despite Pioli’s claims of productive training sessions. His frequent tactical switches between the 3-5-2, 3-4-2-1 and 4-4-2 formations only deepened the confusion, leaving players uncertain and disconnected. Pioli even tried deploying Fagioli as a deep-lying playmaker in a 4-4-2 system, but the experiment was abandoned after a draw against Como. His substitutions often worsened matches rather than improving them, exposing his poor in-game management.

Fiorentina’s summer transfer activity, conducted jointly by Pioli and sporting director Prade, also proved problematic. Pioli’s initial tactical plan relied on a three-man attack featuring Moise Kean, Edin Dzeko or Roberto Piccoli, and Albert Gudmundsson, leading the club to invest heavily in Piccoli. However, after a string of disappointing results, Piccoli was benched and the three-man attack was scrapped altogether, rendering that investment a costly misstep.

  • Pioli enjoyed success with Milan and Al-Nassr

Pioli was appointed as interim head coach of AC Milan in 2019, replacing Marco Giampaolo. He implemented a 4-2-3-1 system that revitalised the team and restored Milan’s identity. With the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pioli brought stability and experience, helping young players such as Rafael Leao, Theo Hernandez and Sandro Tonali reach their full potential. Under his guidance, Milan qualified for the Champions League in the 2020–21 season after a seven-year absence. The following year, Pioli led the Rossoneri to their first Scudetto since 2011, marking a remarkable turnaround.

He continued to impress in Europe, guiding Milan to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2022–23 season before leaving the club in 2023–24. During his tenure, Pioli managed 240 matches, recording 128 wins, 64 draws, and 48 defeats.

In 2024, he took charge of Saudi side Al-Nassr, where he reportedly became the fourth highest-paid manager in the world. At the Riyadh club, he managed stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane, achieving 22 wins, six draws and six losses during the 2024–25 season.

Fiorentina start search for a replacement

Fiorentina take on German side Mainz in the Conference League on Thursday as they look to appoint a replacement as soon as possible. For Pioli, the Fiorentina sacking will come as a setback, but given his impressive accomplishments with Milan, he will be hoping to find a new opportunity either in Italy or abroad.

Stones 2.0: Newcastle agree deal to sign teenage gem in first Ross Wilson move

Making his first move as sporting director, Ross Wilson and Newcastle United have now reportedly agreed a deal to sign a young defender ahead of rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Eddie Howe backs "great" Ross Wilson appointment

With the focus now firmly back on domestic football after the conclusion of the October international break, Eddie Howe has had his say on Wilson’s Newcastle arrival.

The former Bournemouth boss, who has worked with both Dan Ashworth and Paul Mitchell at the club, has now backed the new sporting director ahead of the Magpies’ trip to face Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

The former Nottingham Forest man arrives to calm the storm in Newcastle’s transfer department, which endured the most chaotic summer window. Whether that means reinforcements for Howe remains to be seen.

Having broken their transfer record to welcome Nick Woltemade and replace one of the world’s best strikers in Alexander Isak, PIF certainly proved that they’re willing to spend without PSR issues in the way and that has reportedly seen Wilson spring into action from the off.

Newcastle agree deal to sign Kenchington

According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Newcastle have now agreed a deal to sign Josh Kenchington from Barnsley in Wilson’s first move as sporting director. The England U15 centre-back also had interest from Tottenham Hotspur, but is seemingly set to make the move to Tyneside in the near future.

Likened to Manchester City star and multiple-time Premier League winner John Stones by Hope, Kenchington now has the chance to follow in the England international’s footsteps from Barnsley to the top flight.

Newcastle are brewing a bigger talent than Gordon who's "similar to Mbappe"

One youngster could surpass Anthony Gordon as Newcastle’s next star under Eddie Howe

ByWill Miller Oct 16, 2025

Comfortable on the ball and already over 6ft, there is understandable excitement around the young defender’s arrival. Those at St James’ Park aren’t afraid to hand young players opportunities when they’re ready, either, with the likes of Lewis Miley already benefitting from that.

Although he is unlikely to be in and around Howe’s first-team for a few years yet, Kenchington is certainly one to watch at youth level. If he proves to be anywhere near as talented as England star Stones, then Newcastle will have an undeniable gem on their hands. As first moves go, Wilson may have just pulled off an inevitable bargain.

Arsenal summer signing injured with Madueke as Arteta confirms another lay-off

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was a dealt a significant blow last weekend after in-form summer signing Noni Madueke injured his knee in the 1-1 draw with Man City on Sunday, meaning he could now miss up to eight weeks.

Noni Madueke set to miss at least 10 Arsenal games after injury

The 23-year-old hadn’t managed a goal or assist in Gunners colours prior to his lay-off, but it’s safe to say Madueke has been Andrea Berta’s most impressive summer coup thus far alongside young defender Cristhian Mosquera.

While Mosquera seriously impressed in William Saliba’s absence, Madueke was being a menace for full-backs in the attacking areas – with his burst of pace, trickery and inventiveness in the final third showing exactly why Arsenal splashed £52 million on his signature.

There were huge question marks aimed at Arteta and Berta’s decision to sign the England international after a mixed spell at Chelsea, including from Gary Neville, but the Sky Sports pundit is now among critics to admit they were wrong.

The ex-Eredivisie sensation could have hardly asked for a better start to life at the Emirates Stadium, putting the ‘#NotToMadueke’ movement firmly to rights, but he’s now set to miss a host of crucial games for Arsenal.

Madueke managed to avoid an ACL tear, which in itself is excellent news. However, the winger could be out for a maximum of two months and a minimum of six weeks, meaning he won’t be available for at least 10 games.

There is a chance Madueke will be back for the North London derby against Tottenham in November, and Arteta will be optimistic that is indeed the case as he seeks to end Arsenal’s two-decade-long wait for a Premier League title.

Arsenal also without Piero Hincapie after groin injury

Madueke isn’t the only summer signing with fitness issues either, with Arteta now confirming that defender Piero Hincapie has picked up a groin injury.

The Ecuador international was a surprise absentee from Arsenal’s matchday squad against City, and their manager has shared why.

The 23-year-old was signed with Mosquera as a quality back-up for Saliba and Gabriel, not to mention a defender who can play full-back as well.

Hincapie is highly-rated after two impressive seasons with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, and was a regular in Xabi Alonso’s famous, domestically unbeaten double-winning side from 2024.

Hincapie has barely played since joining from Leverkusen on loan with a £45 million option to buy, so he’ll be looking to convince Berta he’s worthy of the purchase option at the earliest opportunity once fit and available.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs Lyon: Alessia Russo's opener counts for nothing! Gunners fail to capitalise on fast start as Champions League title defence begins with defeat and winless run goes on

Just six months after Arsenal stunned Lyon on their own patch in the Champions League semi-finals on their way to a second European triumph, the French giants got some revenge on Tuesday night as they spoiled the start of the Gunners' title defence with a 2-1 victory that, in truth, flattered the holders. Alessia Russo gave the hosts the lead with seven minutes on the clock but once Melchie Dumornay had quickly cancelled that out, it was all Lyon as two goals from the Haitian star secured all three points for the eight-time winners.

Russo's early strike was a real moment of quality, too, both in the finish and the excellent footwork from Beth Mead that set it up. However, it seemed to serve to only poke the bear as Lyon battled back ferociously with some relentless play throughout the first half in particular. It was a gift that helped them draw level, as goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar passed the ball to Dumornay when playing out from the back under no pressure, but the 22-year-old's second was a stunner, one she sent flying into the top corner from 20 yards out.

Lyon should've added to that lead multiple times but efforts either flew off target or were parried away by Van Domselaar, who did make amends for her earlier blunder with a terrific double stop just before the break especially. Arsenal couldn't make them rue that wastefulness, either, with chances few and far between bar Mariona Caldentey's well-saved effort a minute after Dumornay's second and Caitlin Foord's strike just wide in the final seconds.

It means it's now four games without a winner for the Gunners, after draws against Manchester United and Aston Villa were followed up with defeat at Manchester City at the weekend and now this loss. It's the first time since January 2022 that they have endured such a barren run. Five months after winning the Champions League, head coach Renee Slegers isn't under any real pressure in terms of her job, it must be said, but she and her Arsenal team are in terms of regaining some momentum and getting their season back on track for success.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Meadow Park…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Daphne van Domselaar (3/10):

Made a real blunder for Lyon's first goal and her distribution was questionable for the second, too. Made amends to an extent with some terrific saves but the damage was already done.

    Emily Fox (4/10):

Was overwhelmed in the first half in particular, dealing with Bacha and Diani both running down her side. Could've done more at times but also needed more help.

    Katie Reid (4/10):

Her most difficult night of the season but she still wasn't the most culpable.

    Steph Catley (4/10):

Lost the ball far too often in dangerous areas.

    Taylor Hinds (3/10):

Caught out of position too often as Lyon thrived out wide.

    Midfield

    Kim Little (5/10):

Kept the ball better than most, though the bar wasn't very high.

    Mariona Caldentey (4/10):

Poor awareness led to her giving the ball away for Lyon's second goal. A surprisingly sloppy performance from the Ballon d'Or runner-up.

    Frida Maanum (4/10):

Battled well off the ball, winning most of her duels, but was on the fringes of the game in an attacking sense all night.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Attack

    Chloe Kelly (3/10):

Could not get involved at all in attack and didn't do enough defensively to help deal with Bacha, who always had so much space coming forward from left-back.

    Alessia Russo (5/10):

Took her goal brilliantly. That was about the only service she had all night, however.

    Beth Mead (5/10):

Showed great footwork and vision to pick out Russo for the opening goal but struggled to make much of an impact after that.

    Olivia Smith (5/10):

Battled well and won plenty of duels but couldn't really get anything going in attack.

    Kyra Cooney-Cross (N/A):

Made a rare appearance in the final 15 minutes.

    Stina Blackstenius (N/A):

On for the final 15 minutes but didn't get any service.

    Katie McCabe (N/A):

    A late sub.

    Renee Slegers (5/10):

Was too predictable with her team selection and set-up, and the same with her subs. Didn't do anything to give Lyon a particularly different look going forward in order to help Arsenal get back into the game.
