Dav Whatmore, the Zimbabwe coach, says his side will need time and experience to start converting ability into performance

Liam Brickhill in Harare14-Jul-2015Dav Whatmore knows a thing or two about coaching struggling sides, and coaxing success out of whatever resources are at hand. He masterminded Sri Lanka’s World Cup win in 1996, and sparked a change in Bangladesh’s trajectory when he took over the coaching role there in 2003.He moved into his current position with Zimbabwe less than six weeks before the World Cup earlier this year, and was able to bring enjoyment and cohesion back into the team environment in remarkably quick time. Yet positive results haven’t been forthcoming, and on Tuesday Zimbabwe slipped to a 3-0 series defeat to India despite putting themselves into positions of dominance in all three matches.”That was a hugely disappointing effort in that first game. We honestly thought we should have won that. When you get so close, and you don’t, I think psychologically it becomes a little bit greater when you play the next one. We’ve got the potential, as you can see, we just need to transform our ability into performance, and that comes from here,” Whatmore said, pointing at his head.Though Whatmore prompted “a total 180 in the players’ mindsets” very quickly, according to former captain Brendan Taylor, he insists there is no quick fix for Zimbabwe’s issues.”It doesn’t happen like that,” Whatmore says, clicking his fingers to emphasise the point. “It never does. It takes a bit of time. If you look at the history of Zimbabwe cricket over the last four years, if you’ve done your research you’ll know that we’ve only played a handful of games. And to improve you need to go through certain situations more often. So hopefully boys will learn as quickly as possible, because we are now playing competition which we haven’t had in the past.”It’s okay to say ‘be patient with us’, it’s a cliche but I’m very pleased to have played these three games and we look forward very much to the future matches coming in this calendar year. And we look to improve. So please bear with us, we are trying really hard to get it right and we will need a bit more time. As other sides do.”Zimbabwe have been slightly surprised by the way these pitches have played, as ordinarily Harare Sports Club tracks ease out during the course of the day, particularly in winter. In this series, there has always been something on offer for the bowlers. They “briefly” considered batting first after Elton Chigumbura won his third toss in a row, Whatmore explained, “but this wicket generally gets a lot better than this. It’s sort of misbehaving a little more than what most of us thought. Generally speaking this wicket flattens out a little bit more, but it’s had some life in it right throughout.”India haven’t had it all their way in this series, slipping to 87 for 5 in the first match, losing 6 for 77 in the last 10 overs on Sunday, and wobbling at 82 for 4 today, but Zimbabwe were never able to land the killer blow and, as Whatmore admitted, “we’ve let them off the hook a couple of times”.The problem, for Chigumbura, is a lack of ruthlessness.”It’s just about being ruthless,” he said. “You tend to relax when you are on top, or sometimes some guys realise we’re on top. And also because of not playing many games regularly. I think the more we play the more we could quickly learn from these mistakes.”We need to dig deep when we get into these situations. I think that’s where we’re lacking. We always get into a good position, in almost every series that we play we’ll get one or two chances that we can take with both hands and win the game, but we don’t.”Zimbabwe have a quick turnaround in which to try to set things right before the Twenty20 series starts on Friday, but they can also look forward to an unusually full schedule in the months to come. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, particularly on the psychological aspect of their game, Zimbabwe could yet be another of Whatmore’s success stories.

After spending 15 of the miserable variety in Bangladesh, Pakistan enjoyed a “flawless” one in Khulna according to spin coach Mushtaq Ahmed. The bowlers stuck to plans, catches were taken safely and batsmen chugged along at almost four runs an over. Mohammad Hafeez scored his eighth Test hundred and, with Azhar Ali, led Pakistan to finish 105 shy of Bangladesh’s 332 with nine wickets in hand.Four wickets. Pakistan’s yield after their bowlers had thrown everything at an unresponsive Khulna pitch all through the first day. But on the second, they wrapped up the Bangladesh line-up in a session. Six wickets for 96 runs because Pakistan decided not to let a flat track bog them down.Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah might have economy rates over three, but they shared five wickets between them. Fast bowler Wahab Riaz chipped in with the other three and captain Misbah-ul-Haq had contributed by having the right men patrolling important areas in the field.”It was really tough to get wickets here but quality bowler does adjust in any condition,” Mushtaq said. “Our bowlers knew exactly how to test the batsmen and when to attack and contain.”Pitch at times wasn’t even helping spinners as the batsmen had enough time to adjust and play with freedom. But we had a plan with our field placements for them today to help the bowlers to get wickets. We didn’t believe that Bangladesh would collapse this way as the pitch was slow but our bowlers bowled very well and the fielders today supported them to make it our day.”Yasir was injured during the ODI series and recovered only two days before the Test. Yet his control was admirable and dismissed Bangladesh’s in-form captain Mushfiqur Rahim. Zulfiqar conceded 99 in 32 overs, the most by a Pakistan bowler, but trapped Shakib Al Hasan in the fourth over of the morning.”I was expecting Yasir Shah and Zulfiqar Babar to take more wickets, they deserved it after the way they bowled. But then again we missed a lot of chances the other day and it didn’t go well. But I believe they did well and combined well with the fast bowlers. We have done great to execute the plan.”So what did Pakistan do to reverse a tour where nothing had gone right? “If you focus too much on the opposition strength then you may undermining your strength so we rather spend time to see what we can do better,” Mushtaq said. “What we did between yesterday and today was to motivate players to quickly make up from the mistakes and do their best.””To avoid repeating the fielding mistakes [on the first day], Waqar made a plan to get the right fielders at the right places. So we knew Asad Shafiq is a good fielder at leg-slip. He took another vital catch at midwicket, an outstanding take that repaired day one’s mistake. So despite fielding for 120 overs, players still had the spark.”More of Pakistan’s plans fell in place with the bat. “The idea today was to avoid losing wickets and get as many runs as we can,” Mushtaq said.” This wicket requires some caution, but if you are not positive as well and don’t attack the bowlers, there are limited scoring options. Full credit goes to Hafeez. He played an outstanding innings even with the slowness of the pitch and of the outfield.”

Eu estava confiante e em outro momento Marinho poderá bater. Não foi uma discussão, mas a bola estava ali naquele momento, peguei para mim e disse que bateria. Eu me sentia confiante de fazer e outro momento posso ter dúvida e deixar para um companheiro. Isso depende de cada jogo. Independentemente de quem bata, vamos seguir assim, nada vai mudar por um pênalti. Eu penso no grupo, ele também. Sempre buscamos o melhor pelo time – declarou o camisa 7.

In a game shortened to 15 overs a side, Najibullah’s 32-ball 67, that included four fours and the same number of sixes, propelled Afghanistan to a strong 154 for 4 before their bowlers stifled Pakistan’s chase and restricted them to 100 for 9.Opting to bat, Afghanistan started with a flurry of boundaries against Umar Gul and Mohammad Irfan but lost three wickets in three overs to be reduced to 48 for 3 after six. Najibullah was aggressive from the outset, his second scoring shot a six off Raza Hasan, and did not let the scoring rate drop. Afghanistan were 92 for 4 after 10 overs and raised the tempo further in the last five.Sixty-two runs came in those overs, with Bilawal Bhatti leaking 21 in the 13th. Najibullah started that over with a brace of boundaries, which brought up his fifty off 26 balls, before Samiullah Shenwari smashed consecutive sixes off the last two balls. Then Shenwari ensured a solid finish with 13 runs from the last over bowler by Anwar Ali and was unbeaten on 27 off 14 balls.Mohammad Nabi then struck with the first ball of Pakistan’s innings, catching Nasir Jamshed off his own bowling. Sohaib Maqsood was dismissed in the next over but the innings suffered the momentum-robbing blows between the ninth and the 11th overs as Pakistan lost four wickets for four runs to be reduced to 71 for 7. They could only add a further 29.

Sem problemas físicos ou mesmo em relação a cartões amarelos/vermelhos, a escalação do Tricolor não deve fugir muito do habitual com André recebendo mais uma oportunidade de começar entre os titulares. Everton, que viajou recentemente para o Ceará alegando “problemas particulares a serem resolvidos”, já voltou a Porto Alegre e deve começar jogando.

A mesma tônica de ter todos os principais atletas a disposição também vale para os paraguaios com o adendo de que Óscar Cardozo vinha sendo preservado fisicamente. Após ter disputado a Copa América pela seleção paraguaia, ele ainda não entrou em campo.

Lata Mondal and Jahanara Alam cut through the top and middle order and the visitors were reduced to 63 for 8. Asmavia Iqbal’s 40 at No. 8 helped Pakistan limp past 100 but they were dismissed for 109 in 44.1 overs. Mondal finished with 4 for 35 in eight overs, while Alam took 3 for 22 in ten.

Wriddhiman Saha made a defiant 108, added 160 in 117 balls with Bengal’s nine, ten and jack, and left Maharashtra’s seamers nursing bruised economy rates. But the day still belonged to Samad Fallah, Anupam Sanklecha, and Domnic Joseph.Through the course of Maharashtra’s first innings, the Holkar Stadium pitch seemed to have eased out entirely. But for the second time in the match, Fallah, Sanklecha and Joseph extracted considerable life out of it. Over the course of the first two sessions on the third day, they had reduced Bengal – who had begun their innings with a deficit of 341 – to 188 for 7, before Saha and the tail-enders averted innings defeat. Maharashtra, needing a mere eight runs to reach their first Ranji Trophy final in 21 years, got there in two overs.Bengal had negotiated the morning session reasonably well to go to lunch on 116 for 3. They would have been happier, though, if Arindam Das was still at the crease. Das, who had put on 52 with Sudip Chatterjee for the third wicket, had moved to 34 when he pulled Sanklecha to Akshay Darekar at midwicket. Sanklecha had also taken the first wicket of the morning, trapping Abhimanyu Easwaran lbw with a fast, full inswinger.The left-handed Chatterjee – who starts from a wide, Eoin Morgan-ish crouch – continued batting positively after Arindam’s dismissal, driving Fallah confidently past cover before lunch and pulling him for another four soon after the interval, to move to 49. At this point, the left-arm seamer decided to come from around the wicket. In his next over, he got one to straighten a little and brush Chatterjee’s inside-edge. Wicketkeeper Rohit Motwani, hurling himself to his right, dropped the catch, and added a sheepish voice to a bizarre lbw appeal from Maharashtra’s fielders.It didn’t matter. Fallah angled his next ball across Chatterjee. The batsman shaped to let the ball go, decided against it, and poked at it, and Motwani gobbled up a far easier chance. It was Fallah’s 200th first-class wicket.Suddenly, the ball began to do things off the pitch. Domnic Joseph, a tall fifth-stump metronome, was getting it to keep low almost at will. He moved his line closer to the stumps, and a shooter narrowly missed Laxmi Ratan Shukla’s off stump. Next ball, Joseph showed he didn’t need eccentric bounce, getting the ball to cut in off the pitch and bowl Shukla through the gate.Sanklecha, who replaced Joseph, struck immediately too, with a brute of a delivery that took off from a good length and kissed the shoulder of Sandipan Das’ bat on its way to Motwani. Bengal were 163 for 6. Seven overs later, Joseph came on from the other end and trapped Saurasish Lahiri in front.Sourav Sarkar, walking in at number nine, decided there was little to be gained by hanging around, and proceeded to clout Sanklecha over mid-on for two fours in one over. He then gave himself room to lift Fallah and left-arm spinner Akshay Darekar over the covers for two more fours. Going for another big hit off Darekar, he was caught at deep midwicket off a no-ball. Right after tea, he tried again, off a perfectly legal delivery from Darekar, and holed out to long-on.At this point Saha – who had come in at the fall of the third wicket – had just moved into the 40s. He changed gear, smacking Sanklecha straight over his head for four and slashing Fallah over gully to reach 50. He celebrated the landmark by clubbing the next ball over the deep square leg boundary.Ashok Dinda played with similar abandon, before Joseph had him caught-and-bowled, top-edging an attempted swat over midwicket. In walked the Falstaffian figure of Shib Paul. In the first innings, he had been bowled slogging at his first ball. Could Bengal’s No. 11 take Saha from 75 to a century, and help Bengal score the 46 they needed to make Maharashtra bat again?He could. Paul demonstrated a decent front-foot stride and a straight bat in defence, and a good eye in attack, striking three fours including a nonchalant flick, with upraised back leg, off Fallah. Saha, farming as much as he could of the strike, moved purposefully through the 80s and into the 90s. A straight six off Darekar took him to 96, and the remainder of the over brought a paddle sweep for two and a single to keep the strike.In the next over, Saha tonked Joseph down the ground for four to bring up the century. The fielders converged for the final ball of the over. Saha spanked it past midwicket for four more to take Bengal into the lead.It grew to seven before Darekar took the last wicket of the match, and the first by a spinner, Paul holing out to long-on. Saha was undefeated. His innings hadn’t changed the fate of the semifinal, or even taken it to a fourth day, but it meant something that it had gone into a fourth innings. Bengal were without him for most of the season, and without Mohammed Shami and Manoj Tiwary for all of it. They had exceeded expectations to reach the semifinal. Now, even if it was too late, they had shown up.
