MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said Virender Sehwag has the ability to repeat his feat of a double-century in a one-day international. Sehwag, who is standing in for Dhoni during the ongoing one-day series against West Indies, broke the record for the highest score in an ODI on December 8, hitting 219 in Indore. Dhoni said he always knew Sehwag was capable of going past 200 in a one-dayer.”I had always believed that on his day, Sehwag has the ability to score 200 because apart from the big shots, he also uses the bowlers’ pace against them and plays calculative innings,” Dhoni told . “It was a pleasure to watch him batting. Given his talent, he can do it again. Sri Lanka were shell-shocked and couldn’t handle the pressure, losing eight wickets in the final session.When Andrew Strauss declared two overs into the day, having given Ian Bell chance to reach his hundred – after play was delayed until 3pm by heavy morning rain – the summit of England’s ambitions appeared to be taking some psychological points to Lord’s on Friday. However, Tremlett removed both openers before tea to set the nerves jangling, and when Mahela Jayawardene became his third at the start of the final session, panic was beginning to set in the Sri Lankan ranks.Only when they were eight down did the visitors try to erase England’s advantage with any haste as Thisara Perera and Ajantha Mendis put bat to ball, but wickets were never far away against a pumped-up bowling attack. It didn’t matter that Strauss only had three frontline options, with James Anderson suffering a side strain. Tremlett preyed on the batsmen’s insecurities against the short ball, Swann found turn to force frazzled minds into playing loose shots, and then Broad hustled through the final resistance with 26 overs still to play.The merits of Strauss allowing Bell to reach three figures would have been hotly debated had England run out of time at the end, but his bowlers ensured he didn’t have to worry. Dilshan was given out straight away but he went to the DRS and replays confirmed a glove. Mahela and Kumar Sangakkara survived until tea with Sri Lanka 33 for 2, yet they gave a false sense of security.Although Tremlett changed ends after the interval, he maintained a probing length which left doubt in the batsman’s mind as to whether to play forward to back. Mahela opted to come onto the front foot and Tremlett’s extra carry ensured another edge carried comfortably to Strauss. England began to sense something could happen.Swann then gave another example of why he’s the world’s best spin bowler. Thilan Samaraweera was caught playing back to one that didn’t bounce and dragged onto the stump. Next, from round the wicket, a beautiful piece of bowling lured Sangakkara into an edge and Strauss snaffled his third edge – this time in the unaccustomed position of slip to the spinner.There was no stopping England or Swann as Farveez Maharoof edged his third ball and again the DRS was fruitless as HotSpot showed a clear edge. However, TV evidence was less clear when Prasanna Jayawardene, the first-innings hero with 112, was given out off a gloved pull. This time it was England who called for the review and although HotSpot wasn’t conclusive, Rod Tucker, the third umpire, went on the noise as he had with Sangakkara’s first-innings dismissal. The subsequent use of Snicko proved he was right again.Sri Lanka aided in their own demise, none more so than Rangana Herath who played a horrid sweep at Swann to be caught in front, leaving the visitors 52 for 8. Perera and Mendis quickly worked out the only chance was to get in front of England and the next two overs brought 20 yet, amazingly for a match were 139 overs were lost to rain, there was plenty of time left.Broad was disappointing in the first innings but when Tremlett was rested he responded with a fierce spell to the lower order. He roughed up Perera who lobbed a chance between three fielders before being brilliantly caught, low down, by Bell at short leg. Two balls later Suranga Lakmal fended another short delivery into the slips. England, four months on from Sydney, were back in victory mode. In contrast, Sri Lanka’s dressing room was full of blank faces and this will take some getting over.

Emocionado e ansioso, o camisa 11 contou que teve muito medo de não retornar aos gramados e que se apoiou no treinador carioca para evoluir no período em que esteve afastado.

– Jair é um cara muito bacana. Foi pela fundamental nos momentos de dificuldade. Ele era um cara que me ligava sempre, perguntava como eu estava, me pedia para aparecer no CT e fazer tratamento… Quando voltei a fazer trabalho de campo, ele me ajudava, me ajudava na finalização. Foi fundamental para mim – disse Bruno, e completou:

– Desde o começo, Jair lamentou minha ausência. Mas nesse termo de lamentação, ele sempre me jogava pra cima, dizendo que eu poderia voltar, que era para eu ter calma, para eu não me apressar, pois ele sabia que eu poderia voltar. E que quando eu voltasse, que ele queria o Bruno que atuou em 2017.

Medo de não voltar a jogar
O problema de Bruno no olho direito, a princípio, parecia algo de fácil resolução: após a bola, repousaria por alguns dias, ficaria afastado do time por dois ou três jogos e voltaria a treinar conforme o local desinchasse. Porém, a lesão tomou outro rumo e se tornou algo gravíssimo, a ponto do Santos temer liberará-lo por voltar a jogar mais de três meses depois do problema. Nesse período, Bruno Henrique teve medo.

– Nunca tinha acontecido isso comigo, de eu ter ficado parado por tanto tempo. Essa lesão quase me tirou do campo e me preocupou muito. Mas com a ajuda do departamento médico pude voltar em alto nível. Isso se fortaleceu dentro de mim, que a minha recuperação estava próxima. E hoje posso declarar que estou recuperado. Vou voltar o que eu gosto de fazer – explicou.

Antes de retornar à lista de relacionados, Bruno ficou perto de ir aos Estados Unidos para se consultar com um especialista. Sem visto, acabou indo para um Centro de Excelência em Frankfurt, na Alemanha, para consulta e exames oftalmológicos com o Professor Doutor Claus Eckardt, que o liberou para retornar aos gramados. O Doutor Jorge Merouço, chefe do departamento médico do Santos, acompanhou o atacante na viagem.

A tendência é que Bruno retorne ao time aos poucos. Embora tenha sido relacionado para o jogo desde sábado, se entrar em campo, será por poucos minutos. O camisa 11 ainda precisa retomar o ritmo para, então, voltar a se encaixar de vez na rotina do clube.

Andrew Miller07-Feb-2011Lord MacLaurin, the former chairman of the ECB, has laid into the “crazy” schedule that England’s cricketers have been subjected to in Australia this winter, but believes that their 6-1 thrashing in the one-day leg of a four-month tour will have little bearing on their performance in the forthcoming World Cup.The England team arrives back in the UK on Tuesday afternoon, almost exactly a month after retaining the Ashes in style with an innings-and-83-run victory in the fifth and final Test at Sydney.At the time, the achievement was rightly hailed as one of the most meticulously planned successes in the history of English cricket, with the ECB’s planners and the team’s back-room staff earning as much credit for their efforts as the players themselves. However, in the wake of their one-day drubbing, the team’s welcoming committee is unlikely to be as rapturous as might have been the case in the immediate aftermath of the Test series.What is more, the players themselves are unlikely to be particularly high-spirited either, seeing as they will be reconvening at the airport on Saturday after just three days with their families, ahead of their departure for Dhaka and a further seven-week stint at the World Cup. England’s coach, Andy Flower, voiced his own frustration at the end of the Australia tour, and called for a greater say in the team’s future plans.”I think it’s a crazy itinerary,” Lord MacLaurin told ESPNcricinfo. “You are asking a load of guys to go out to Australia for 100 days, and concentrate on a Test series in which they did extraordinarily well, so I’m sure they would say that the one-day series is after the Lord Mayor’s show. Do you really want to go into seven ODIs when you’ve been at high-pitch Test cricket for a number of weeks, especially when they did supremely well?”During his tenure as the first chairman of ECB from 1997 to 2003, MacLaurin was credited with a number of initiatives that transformed the standing of English cricket, including the standardisation of the team’s uniform and a better presentation of the players when at home and on tour. In many ways, the 2010-11 Ashes was the ultimate statement of the team’s new-found professionalism – however, no-one has been able to legislate for an itinerary that has been designed to exhaust.On the morning after the series win in Sydney, the players were sent on a long-distance coach trip to Canberra to prepare for the ODI series, and amid an itinerary that included a further eight internal flights, they have succumbed to a host of injuries – the most recent of which is the broken finger that now jeopardises Eoin Morgan’s participation in the World Cup.”I think we’d all agree that the past seven matches have been a bit futile, and I don’t think anybody’s learnt too much about each other from that,” said MacLaurin. “The Ashes campaign was a magnificent effort from all concerned – it was very, very well planned and all credit to them – but I wouldn’t worry about the one-day defeat, to be quite honest with you. I think the team needs a bit of a break, and I think they will do reasonably well at the World Cup.”The situation mirrors that which England encountered in the winter of 1995-96, shortly before the start of MacLaurin’s tenure as ECB chairman, in which they went to an Asian World Cup on the back of a tiring Test series in South Africa and a subsequent 6-1 ODI defeat, and were humbled by Sri Lanka in a seminal quarter-final in Faisalabad.While MacLaurin maintained that, ultimately, the volume of international cricket was an ICC concern, he believed that the professionalism of the current squad was such that they would be more than capable of rising to their next challenge.”I think the whole thing is better managed these days,” said MacLaurin. “I don’t think anyone particularly wanted these seven matches, but I’m sure there’s a lot of steel in this side, a lot of determination, and a lot of very good leadership, and we probably didn’t have that all those years ago – in fact I’m sure we didn’t have it.”Mike Atherton, England’s captain during that 1996 campaign, reiterated MacLaurin’s faith in the current set-up. “This squad is better able to cope with the itinerary, because they have been very successful over the last two years,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “Beating Australia in the Tests, actually hammering them, will give them a deep well of confidence going into the World Cup.”A pounding in the ODIs is not ideal, but they are better able to come back from that, for a number of reasons,” Atherton added. “They are far more experienced in the subcontinent than our squad was, and these days, they are playing a style of game all year round, in England and abroad, in which they go out and try to whack it from ball one. You just feel it’s not going to affect them as much as it would have done ten or so years ago.””I have huge confidence in the abilities of Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower, and all those associated with the ECB,” added MacLaurin. “I’ve been vocal about one of two things about the ECB since I left office, but you have to give credit where credit is due, and the set-up there now is good, and to win the Ashes is a huge, huge achievement. I still think we might surprise a few people in the World Cup, and I wouldn’t take too much notice of this last 6-1.”

Crystal Palace will no doubt be looking to return to winning ways, after sustaining losses to Chelsea and Leicester City, respectively.

Both losses saw the Eagles deploy two different formations, as they temporarily stepped away from their 4-3-3 system.

When they played Leicester City in their most recent league game, Palace attempted to gain a numerical advantage throughout the centre of the pitch by deploying a 4-2-3-1 system against Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 shape.

And in the FA Cup semi-final, Vieira looked to nullify Chelsea’s attacking threat by the means of a 3-5-2 system.

Across both fixtures, Vieira’s side conceded four goals and scored just one. That is a sure-fire sign for the return of the system that had seen them pick up 11 points from a possible 15, across their last five games.

One player who has drastically struggled for minutes this season is the 23-year-old talent, Ebere Eze, someone dubbed “special” by the Coaches Voice.

Eze has made just seven appearances in the Premier League this season, after struggling for fitness as a result of an achilles tendon problem that he sustained at the end of the last Premier League campaign.

Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Chelsea saw him play a full 90 minutes for the first time this season, with Eze now reported to be fully fit by Crystal Palace correspondent, Mark Wyatt, and ready to make his claim as an Eagles regular.

The game against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side is the perfect opportunity for the England starlet to make his presence known and get back to the form that saw him chip in with ten goal contributions in 34 Premier League appearances for Palace last season.

Vieira can give the £37k-per-week livewire creative freedom up top, with a simple tweak to his usual 4-3-3 formation.

Quite simply, a switch to a 4-3-2-1 system (replacing the two wing positions with two attacking midfielders) would suit Eze’s game down to a tee.

The £18m-rated star played his best football as an attacking midfielder for QPR in a 2019/20 season that saw him bag eight assists.

This slight tweak could help him reach these numbers once again in a move that could, quite simply, terrify Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.

The Magpies have the money to spend, so they should be looking to get both players in.

One thing that they have in common is that they are lightning-quick, as Badiashile has been described as ‘very fast’ by Monaco Vice President Oleg Petrov, while the German media have previously hailed Diaby’s pace as ‘irresistible’.

Nonetheless, with strong rumours that Allan Saint-Maximin could leave the Toon, Eddie Howe will want to inject some more speed into his team, and these two would be perfect.
