Zimbabwe plan for life after Taylor, Masakadza

Zimbabwe Cricket has already begun their succession plan for life after Brendan Taylor (31) and Hamilton Masakadza (34), two of their most senior cricketers who are now in their thirties. With matches, tournaments, funding and sponsorship hard to come by, the coaches and management are going all out to get Zimbabwe nationals playing a competitive level of cricket in other countries, particularly at the Under-19 level to begin with.”The main challenge is our school system, which we always rely on to tap on talent. The level of cricket has gone down because they play just seven 50-over games the whole year,” Stephen Mangongo, Zimbabwe’s Under-19 coach, said. “There’s no two-day or three-day games, nothing. That scenario is not ideal. You cannot produce international cricketers in such a system. That is the biggest challenge.”Among those in the current Under-19 squad to have played abroad are: Donald Mlambo, who studies in England and has been scoring heaps of runs for a Suffolk-based club, Alistair Frost, an offspinner who plays for Hilton College in South Africa, Tinashe Nenhunzi, who plays in Durban, and Taun Harrison, who has been performing well at the school level in Cape Town. Wesley Madhevere, who also plays in South Africa, is now in his second World Cup after debuting in Bangladesh as a 15-year old.Often it is the lack of exposure that has driven talent away, a harsh reality in troubled times. “From Zimbabwe, because of lack of enough cricket, talented youngsters move to South Africa where they play a minimum of 50 games in a year,” Mangongo said. “Some play in England for the same reason. However, they’re still Zimbabweans. Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor are in their mid-30s. They aren’t going to be there for long. It is Zimbabwe Cricket’s duty to identify players now, so that they can graduate to international cricket in the next three-four years. It is a sustained program to go into South African schools and identify Zimbabweans.”While Mangongo is keen on working on bringing back overseas talent, he’s also mindful of the frustration cricketers endure from within because of lack of exposure in a struggling financial environment in Zimbabwe. It’s an area he hopes Zimbabwe Cricket will be able to address quickly. “It’s a massive challenge, we can’t hide that fact,” he said. “It’s difficult. A talented cricketer wants to play enough cricket. If they come back and don’t play first-class or for Zimbabwe A, youngsters will look elsewhere. Zimbabwe Cricket is trying to ensure there’s enough A cricket or first-class cricket so talented youngsters realise their dream. Talent is there, though.ICC/Getty Images

“Funds, matches being cancelled are all genuine fears players have. All these challenges of staging and hosting, it becomes a big irritation for any serious cricketer. Their job is to play, evolve and move to the next stage. The stop-start becomes a real threat to serious cricketers but I’m sure Zimbabwe Cricket is trying its level best. Brendan Taylor or Kyle Jarvis woudn’t come back if cricket in the country wasn’t on a revival part. They had good contracts in England. Within the next three-four years, we want cricket to become sustainable.”In recent times, though, there has been an upswing in fortunes of the game in Zimbabwe. Mangongo particularly stresses on how Taylor’s return has spelt new hope, even as the board is slowly picking up the pieces under a revamped structure and administration.”His return is a show of confidence. It’s a massive indicator to a lot of youngsters who have grown up idolising Taylor,” he said “It also tells the youngsters that ‘wow, Brendan is back. It gives me hope to continue playing cricket’. Because if a seasoned player can make a decision to come back and play for Zimbabwe, then the youngsters who want to dream, who want to play cricket seriously in the country, they start to believe in themselves that it can be done.”In that regard, having a number of players return ahead of the Under-19 World Cup is a victory in itself, according to the coach. But he’s aware of the need to ensure these players become the fulcrum of their plans over the next four-five years. He not only hopes four or five of them graduate to the national team but wants to use them to ensure schools cricket is revived again in the country.”As a coach, coming from where Zimbabwean schoolboy cricket is; it’s in the gutter to be honest,” Mangongo said. “We’ve got really about five schools that are serious cricketing schools. To then come to international youth level and rubbing shoulders with quality cricketers is a challenge. Youth cricketers are ruthless. They’re not playing for money. They’re playing to perform. That’s all they want to do. They play hard, they tough. So, for us this Under-19 World Cup is a massive jump.”

Arsenal May Reignite Interest In "Dangerous" £37k-p/w Star

Arsenal may choose to reignite their interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba this summer on one major condition, a new report has now revealed.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

Prior to his side's 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, Mikel Arteta was not planning to make any more signings this summer, but the manager may now be forced to re-enter the market for a new defender.

Sporting director Edu is open to signing Joao Cancelo, although that may be a difficult deal to orchestrate, as the Manchester City full-back has already agreed personal terms with Barcelona, and the Citizens may not be willing to negotiate with a rival.

Leicester City's Timothy Castagne and Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters are also named as potential options, although The Athletic's James McNicholas has suggested Arteta may be better off giving one of his current right-back's a chance, saying:

“At right-back, we’ve got [Takehiro] Tomiyasu, we’ve got Ben White.

“Beyond that, we do still have Cedric Soares and we’ve got Reuell Walters in the squad. No talk about a loan move for him so he could be an emergency candidate if required. Very highly-rated, lots of ability, could this be the opening that gives him a chance to impress potentially in the cup competitions?”

Not only will Arteta have to start thinking about how to replace Timber, but the manager may also be tasked with bringing in a new centre-back, with The Daily Express reporting that Gabriel Magalhaes is being lined up for a big-money move to Saudi Arabia.

Arsenal have no plans to sell the centre-back, despite him being left out of the squad that took out on Forest, but if he does move on, then Arteta has a couple of targets in mind.

Tapsoba and Marc Guehi are likely to feature near the top of any defensive shortlist, should Gabriel leave in the next two weeks, with the former being named as a target for the Gunners way back in May.

How good is Edmond Tapsoba?

The 24-year-old has been a key player for Leverkusen over the past few seasons, with some of his best performances coming in the 2020-21 campaign, averaging a Sofascore match rating of 7.17 in the Bundesliga, the second-highest in the squad.

It is fair to say the Burkina Faso international did not let his new club down after joining from Vitoria Guimaraes, with former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller praising him for his "really big potential" and calling him "dangerous in front of goal" upon his arrival.

edmond-tapsoba-transfer-gossip-bayer-leverkusen-tottenham-hotspur-dimitar-berbatov-postecoglou

The £37k-per-week centre-back is always looking to drive the ball forward, ranking in the 95th percentile for progressive carries, and the 93rd for successful take-ons compared to his positional peers, but the hope will be that he is not a necessary signing.

Arsenal will not want Gabriel to leave this summer, considering he was a key member of the team last season, appearing in every single Premier League game, however Tapsoba could be a good replacement if the Brazilian is tempted by a move to Saudi Arabia.

'Hathurusingha will be a great fit' – SLC president

Sri Lanka have finally confirmed their interest in having Chandika Hathurusingha as head coach, with the president of the SLC Thilanga Sumathipala saying he would be “a great fit for us”.The position had fallen vacant in June earlier this year when Graham Ford resigned after a second stint that lasted a mere 15 months. The SLC elevated Nic Pothas as interim coach as it began to look for a suitable candidate.Hathurusingha has previously admitted to a desire to give back to Sri Lankan cricket but was contracted with the Bangladesh Cricket Board as their head coach. He might have occupied the post until the end of the 2019 World Cup, but in October, as Bangladesh were touring South Africa, Hathurusingha sent in his resignation to the BCB and cut all ties with the board. The SLC release states it is currently in discussion with Hathurusingha’s lawyers and is ready to “offer him the position” of head coach if he has been released from his contract with the BCB. To that end, Sumathipala has written to his counterpart Nazmul Hassan for further information.”There’s no doubt that Hathuru would be a great fit for us with the direction of both our short and long terms goals,” Sumathipala said. “I have written personally to the BCB President – Mr. Nazmul Hassan informing him of our intentions. The Executive Committee is both convinced & confident that he is the right man for the job, and we would like to bring him on board in a professional and transparent manner”If Hathurusingha is appointed Sri Lanka’s coach, his first assignment may well be against Bangladesh, whom they play in a tri-series also featuring with Zimbabwe in January 2018.

Everton Could Sign Major £10m Maupay Upgrade At Goodison

Everton appear to have missed out on a move for Almeria's El Bilal Toure, leaving supporters even more anxious ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign.

However, Italian outlet il BiancoNero reports that Everton have shown a concrete interest in Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior in what could be a rare smart piece of business from the Merseyside outfit.

Who are Everton trying to sign?

After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season, Everton's squad was in need of some serious rebuilding this summer.

However, with two-and-a-half weeks to go until the new season kicks off, the Toffees have so far brought in only 38-year-old Ashley Young on a free transfer, plus Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal.

That is not to mention the fact that the likes of Yerry Mina, Tom Davies and Ellis Simms have all moved on and need to be replaced in the squad.

Bilal Toure has been strongly linked with a move to Goodison Park, but L'Equipe reports that the Almeria forward has instead opted to join Serie A side Atalanta.

Sean Dyche's men may now turn their focus to Iling-Junior, whom Gazzetta dello Sport previously reported could be available for as little as £10m due to Juventus needing to raise money.

How good is Samuel Iling-Junior?

Iling-Junior spent nine years in Chelsea's academy before making the switch to Juventus in 2020, and he was part of the Italian giants' first team within two years.

The England U20 international made his debut against Empoli last October and assisted goals in his next two appearances, against Benfica in the Champions League and Lecce in Serie A.

Iling-Junior, who does not turn 20 until October, scored his first – and so far only – senior goal in Juve's 2-0 win over Atalanta in May, but he has largely had to play a back-up role and the Bianconeri are reportedly open to offloading him.

Given his small valuation, Everton must ensure they see off rumoured competition from top-flight rivals Fulham and West Ham United – not least because the Englishman would provide an upgrade on Neal Maupay in attack.

Everton striker Neal Maupay.

Maupay struggled in his first season at Goodison Park after arriving in a £15m deal from Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring just one goal and assisting none in 27 Premier League outings last time out.

Used mainly as a centre-forward in a campaign in which Everton's star performer Dominic Calvert-Lewin spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch, Maupay's inability to either score or create was a huge factor in why the Toffees were involved in a relegation scrap.

Indeed, Maupay was described as "absolutely woeful" by football reporter Paul Brown towards the end of last season. A failure to bring in an upgrade could well lead to another dismal campaign on the blue half of Merseyside.

Looking at their figures from last season, there is no reason why the younger Iling-Junior – labelled "simply superb" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig for his performance in that aforementioned game against Benfica – cannot provide a better outlet than Maupay.

Soccer Football – Serie A – Inter Milan v Juventus – San Siro, Milan, Italy – March 19, 2023 Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, Samuel Iling Junior and teammates celebrate after the match REUTERS/Daniele Mascolo

Taking all competitions into account, Iling-Junior was involved in 0.43 goals or assists per 90 minutes last season, as per FBref, compared to 0.14 for Maupay. The 19-year-old also won more of his aerial duels (50% v 23.8%) and had a better take-on success percentage (42.9 v 36.8).

Iling-Junior was also stronger in defensive metrics such as tackles won per 90 (0.94 v 0.35) and recoveries (5.64 v 2.10), which will no doubt please Dyche.

Juve's decision to listen to offers for Iling-Junior seems bizarre on the face of it, but there will be no complaints from Everton supporters should their side land the hugely talented player.

'Hopefully we'll get more support back home' – Mire

After scoring his maiden ODI ton, a Man-of-the-Match effort in a record chase, Solomon Mire said he was hopeful the result would encourage more people in Zimbabwe to support the team.”The win just allows hope for the fans and the people who are following the team. It allows them to stay in and stay involved. Hopefully we will get more support from our people back home and all round the world as well,” said Mire.”There is a bit more belief in the team. When we started today, at one stage we thought we would be chasing quite a big score – about 350. To be able to bring it back the way we did gave us a little bit of momentum going when we went to bat.”We had the belief that if we batted for a long period we would be able to compete in the game, and winning really capped it off for us. It’s such a huge thing for Zimbabwe cricket to be able to win against a top team like Sri Lanka,” he said.Mire, whose previous highest score in 17 ODIs was a 55-ball 54 against Afghanistan, described his 112 off 96 balls as ‘very special’.”It was a very satisfying, especially considering it was such a huge win for us. We have beaten Sri Lanka here for the first time so I am happy to contribute to the win. It was pretty tough and I was cramping up halfway through. I tried to keep re-hydrating, but it is something that takes a bit of time to get used to, the heat. Hopefully going forward we will be better prepared.”We challenged ourselves. We knew that if someone batted a long time and made a hundred, it would put us in a good position to be able to chase. We have been trying to work something like that in the last few months and it was due.”We needed someone to actually put his hand up and score some runs. Luckily, it worked for us today. Going forward the template we will be to try and bat as long as possible and the runs will come,” he said.Zimbabwe’s intent to bat long was studded with runs that came behind the wicket against spinners, particularly through sweeps and reverse sweeps. The opener said it was a conscious effort.”Coming into this series, we were sort of preparing to have those options [the sweep and reverse sweep] for us to use because we were thinking the wickets might be a bit challenging against spin. It worked today and is something that we would try and continue utilising.”

Oman, Canada secure promotion; USA avoid relegation

A round-up of the WCL Division Three matches from Kampala held on May 29, 2017

Peter Della Penna in Kampala29-May-2017Oman are one step closer to replicating Afghanistan’s dramatic rise up the WCL ladder from 2008-09 after they stormed past Malaysia by 131 runs at Lugogo Stadium to top the WCL Division Three table. The result helped them secure their third consecutive promotion.Naseem Khushi was the latest player to make hay with the short boundaries at Lugogo, smashing four fours and eight sixes in an unbeaten 77 off 30 balls in a late surge that took Oman to 293 for 7, after they had been sent in. It was the third fifty of the innings and the quickest after 61 off 76 balls from Aqib Ilyas and 51 off 69 balls from captain Sultan Ahmed.Malaysia went pedal to the medal early in their chase in a desperate attempt to both win and do it fast enough to take their net run rate above Uganda and USA in order to avoid relegation. They reached 94 for 3 in 10.4 overs on the back of opener Anwar Arudin’s 33-ball fifty. His innings, however, ended when slingy fast bowler Munis Ansari had him caught behind for 57 off 35 balls at the end of the over. Malaysia subsided meekly thereafter to be bowled out for 162 in 33.1 overs.Ansari, who had struggled all tournament with just one wicket coming into the match, ended with 4 for 47 while legspinning allrounder Khawar Ali wiped out the tail to finish with 5 for 23.File photo – Rizwan Cheema’s 35-ball 42 was not enough for Canada to topple Singapore•Associated PressSingapore completed a sweep of the North American contingent at Division Three with a two-run win over Canada at Kyambogo Oval. Canada still gained promotion despite an equal 3-2 record with Singapore thanks to a vastly superior net run rate, the tournament tiebreaker, while Singapore’s win ensured they avoided relegation.Their net run rate was worse than both USA and Uganda at 2-3, so a loss would have sent them back to Division Four but Canada collapsed with victory in sight. Chasing 167, they lost their last four wickets for 17 runs to be all out for 164 with 12 overs left unused.Singapore’s innings was anchored by Anish Paraam’s 58 off 75 balls at No. 3 after they had been sent in. But when he fell to to Bhavindu Adhihetty in the 32nd over to make it 147 for 7, Singapore’s tail lasted less than five overs, before they were wiped out by Adhihetty and Saad Bin Zafar, who finished with 3 for 10 and 2 for 39 respectively.Canada’s chase got off to a rocky start when Adhihetty fell for a duck off the third ball and they lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter. Allrounder Rizwan Cheema looked set to take Canada over the line with 42 off 35 balls, including five fours and two sixes, but he fell to Anantha Krishna with eight needed to win. The legspinner kept his composure under pressure to also dismiss Hamza Tariq and then Saad Bin Zafar with just four needed to win to put Singapore one wicket away from victory.Canada only lasted two more balls before last man Cecil Pervez was run out, going for a second run off Krishna, ensuring Singapore were spared relegation in dramatic fashion.Elmore Hutchinson’s half-century at No. 9 set up a dramatic finale at Entebbe to save USA from relegation•Peter Della PennaUSA saved their place in Division Three in similarly dramatic circumstances with a 13-run win over Uganda at Entebbe, sending the hosts back to Division Four.Set a target of 146 to win, Uganda needed to get to 141 in spite of a loss to stay above USA on net run rate. But USA’s spinners wreaked havoc on a track offering significant turn with Steven Taylor taking 5 for 32.When Taylor dismissed Frank Nsubuga for the ninth wicket in the 30th over, Uganda still needed 27 runs to overtake USA on net run rate and they nearly did it as tailender Henry Ssenyondo provided valiant support, lasting 42 balls, to captain Davis Karashani. With Taylor, Mrunal Patel (1 for 27) and Nosthush Kenjige (2 for 43) all bowled out, Taylor tossed the ball to pacer Jessy Singh for a steady diet of yorkers until one finally broke through Karashani’s defense and clipped leg stump to finish off Uganda for 132 in 43 overs.Though Taylor claimed five wickets, it was Elmore Hutchinson who took home the Man-of-the-Match honors after hitting 52 off 50 balls from No. 9. USA had been reduced to 104 for 9 in the 44th over but Hutchinson scored 39 out of the last 41 runs in a 10th wicket stand with Kenjige. The last over of the innings saw Hutchinson strike two fours and a six off Jonathan Sebanja in a back-breaking sequence that ended up being the difference in keeping USA up and sending the hosts down.Oman will play Canada in the tournament final at Lugogo on Tuesday. USA will face Singapore in the third place match at Kyambogo while Uganda and Malaysia will square off at Entebbe in the fifth place playoff on the same day.

West Ham Have Enquired Over A Move For £27.5m-Rated "Starlet"

West Ham United have made an enquiry for Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi ahead of a potential move for him this summer.

What’s the latest on Callum Hudson-Odoi to West Ham United?

According to Ben Jacobs in his Caught Offside column, West Ham have ‘enquired’ about the player, although there is no shortage of interest in the 22-year-old, with fellow Premier League clubs Crystal Palace, Brentford and Fulham also interested.

He is currently valued at €32m (£27m) by FootballTransfers and with just a year left on his current deal with the Stamford Bridge outfit, David Moyes may have the opportunity to lure him to the club for a knockdown price.

Could West Ham United sign Callum Hudson-Odoi?

Chelsea have a plethora of options across their front three and Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t appear to be standing still in the transfer market, which suggests the winger could find opportunities difficult to come by next term.

He spent the 2022/2023 season on loan at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, enduring an underwhelming campaign as he made only 21 appearances, registering two goal contributions, yet there is no disputing his potential.

He broke onto the scene during the 2018/2019 season and showed his "crazy potential" – as per scout Jacek Kulig, particularly impressing in the Europa League where he scored four goals in nine matches, before making his England debut aged just 18, underlining just how highly rated he was.

With superstardom just around the corner, the youngster suffered a serious injury which keep him out for a few months not long after he made his England debut and across his whole Chelsea career to date, he has missed 43 matches in total due to a variety of injury issues.

The loan move to Leverkusen was meant to rejuvenate him and director Simon Rolfes even claimed he was a “key player” for the side when it was confirmed he was staying in Germany for the whole season back in January.

callum-hudson-odoi-premier-league-everton-transfers

Hudson-Odoi showed glimpses of his true potential in the Champions League last term, starting all six matches in the group stage, and even scoring once, while making 1.7 key passes per game and succeeding with 1.5 dribbles per game – a success rate of 53% – and these figures were actually higher than what West Ham winger Said Benrahma registered in the Europa Conference League.

The Algerian made just 0.8 key passes per game and also succeeded with 1.5 dribbles per match, yet his success rate was only 49%.

Thus, if Hudson-Odoi could replicate the form he displayed in Europe’s premier club competition, he could be a key player for Moyes next season, potentially even eclipsing Benrahma in the process.

David Warner celebrated his 30th birthday by scoring a brisk century against Queensland at the Gabba, continuing his strong recent run of form ahead of the first Test against South Africa. Warner’s hundred came up in 124 balls and he finished with 134 from 160 deliveries, including 16 fours, as New South Wales set the Bulls 365 for victory. Before this match, two of Warner’s three most recent innings had been centuries – 117 and 173 in ODIs against South Africa earlier this month. His hundred in the day-night Sheffield Shield clash also means that three of Australia’s likely top four for the WACA Test – Warner, Shaun Marsh and Steven Smith – have reached triple figures in this Shield round.Warner and Ed Cowan put on 230 for the opening wicket, a stand that ended when Cowan was caught off the part-time bowling of Charlie Hemphrey for 95. Warner fell to legspinner Mitch Swepson just a few overs later, his 23rd first-class century having come exactly a week before the Australians walk out against the South Africans in Perth.Smith compiled 42 and Kurtis Patterson made 38, but the real damage had been done in the opening stand, and New South Wales were able to declare at 7 for 367, leaving Queensland 11 overs to bat before stumps. Hemphrey was bowled by Josh Hazlewood for 4, but Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja survived until the close of play, Burns on 29 and Khawaja on 12, with Queensland needing a further 314 to win.Mitchell Starc, who was playing his first match back having had 30 stitches in his left shin following a sickening training accident in Sydney last month, was substituted out of the game on Thursday as Cricket Australia control his preparation for the first Test. Doug Bollinger came in to the side to replace Starc mid-match.
