Arsenal Boss Arteta Wants Players To Copy £300k p/w Ace

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is 'confident' that he can tie more players down to long-term contracts at the Emirates Stadium following Bukayo Saka's agreement to sign a new deal at the Gunners, according to journalist Dharmesh Sheth.

What's the latest news involving Bukayo Saka and who else could sign an extension?

As per The Mirror, Saka has signed a new £300,000 per week contract at Arsenal that will tie him to his boyhood club until the summer of 2027.

The report states that Gunners' boss Arteta is planning a 'transformational' rebuild in the off-season and is keen to get his ducks in a row, with squad members Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney all in danger of being axed as the Spaniard eyes a rebuild.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has also revealed that Arsenal plan to sit down with club captain Martin Odegaard and offer him a new deal, though they can also extend his terms until 2026. The Italian stated on Twitter: "Arsenal have an option to extend Martin Ødegaard’s current contract until June 2026 — but negotiations will take place soon over new long term deal. Ødegaard loves the club and Arsenal want Martin to be part of their long term project."

FootballTransfers detail that Arteta himself is in line to be handed a new deal in north London as the Premier League giants plan for the future with him at the helm.

It is believed that William Saliba could also sign on the dotted line at Arsenal and commit to an extended stay at the club, with discussions over 'minor disagreements in agent commission' not expected to derail the process of negotiations.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Sheth has been in contact with Arteta in his capacity as a reporter for Sky Sports News and thinks he is 'quietly confident' that more of his players will extend their stay at Arsenal.

Sheth said: "I actually spoke to Mikel Arteta for Sky Sports News yesterday and put it to him, 'Look, great news about Saka, are you expecting even more good news with some of your other top players?' And I think he's quietly confident that the players that he wants to keep and extend contracts for, they will end up staying at Arsenal."

Should Arsenal's key assets commit their future to the club?

Arsenal are clearly a club on an upward trajectory. Arteta and his players exceeded expectations this campaign by finishing second in the Premier League table and securing Champions League qualification.

If their summer transfer plans are anything to go by, the Emirates faithful could be in for a treat. The Athletic have reported that Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan, West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount are among some of their transfer targets in the upcoming window.

West Ham United'sDeclanRicecelebrates

Pursuing a trio of high-profile players to strengthen their squad is a sign that the Gunners are showing ambition to continue to improve and challenge for the Premier League title.

Understandably, current players at Arsenal will feel like the club is pulling in the same direction as their own visions of competing at the highest level and potentially winning silverware, therefore making it an easy decision to commit their future to the club for the long-term.

Leeds: £25k-p/w Brute Could Be Reborn Under Allardyce

Leeds United confirmed the appointment of Sam Allardyce as their new manager until the end of the season today and the survival specialist will have to pull off something of a miracle if he is going to keep the Yorkshire outfit in the Premier League.

Why did Leeds hire Sam Allardyce?

The 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth last weekend was seemingly the final straw for Javi Gracia, who saw his side set a new Premier League record for the most goals conceded in a single month.

Their dreadful run of form has left them hovering dangerously over the relegation places with tough games to come against Manchester City, Newcastle United, West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the arrival of Allardyce could just spark some hope among the Leeds fanbase and if he can reconstruct a Leeds defence that has fallen apart in recent weeks, it could just keep them in the top flight.

One man who could be key to that rebuild is captain Liam Cooper, as the centre-back has performed well when called upon this season and has the leadership qualities that could win over Allardyce at Elland Road.

How good has Liam Cooper been this season?

The 31-year-old's 6.66 average rating from WhoScored sees him ranked behind only Pascal Struijk and Max Wober as defenders in Leeds' squad, and yet it is Robin Koch who has been the most consistently called upon centre-back this season.

That said, the skipper is still a key figure behind the scenes, with former manager Jesse Marsch having been full of praise for the Scotland international and his leadership skills during his time at Elland Road.

The American said: “Liam is going to play a big role in the team no matter what. Diego and Robin have done well. I told Liam before yesterday he hasn’t trained much but when he does return from injury, he plays flawlessly.“In terms of mentality, a professional, a leader, he is the best I’ve ever seen. He will be used, he will be needed."

Injuries have meant that the experienced defender has featured just 17 times in the top flight so far this campaign but he impressively ranks first for interceptions, third for clearances and second for blocks per game in Leeds' squad, underlying his willingness to defend and put his body on the line for the club.

No-nonsense centre-backs such as Winston Reid, James Collins and James Tomkins have all featured heavily under Allardyce in his career thus far and Cooper could be the next to prosper under the experienced English manager, becoming that combative force in the backline.

If the captain, who earns £25k-per-week at Elland Road, can rediscover his best form in the final few Premier League games, it could just inspire Allardyce's men to the masterstroke of keeping Leeds in the division.

VAR Misses Possible Red Card In Man City Win Over Everton

Referee Anthony Taylor and his VAR team may have made a big mistake in the recent Everton defeat as they failed to send off Aymeric Laporte.

What’s the latest on VAR and Everton?

It was a near-perfect weekend in the Premier League for Manchester City and co as they extended their lead at the top of the table with a win.

Not only that, but with title rivals Arsenal losing 3-0 at home to Brighton and Hove Albion, it looks as though the division will be won by City once again.

Sadly, at the other end of the table, it was a miserable afternoon for the Toffees.

Their loss at Goodison Park came largely thanks to a moment of brilliance from Ilkay Gundogan which was swiftly followed by the inevitable Erling Haaland goal, before the German then made it 3-0 later on with a sumptuous free kick.

However, when the score was still 0-0, the Cityzens can perhaps count themselves a bit fortunate that Laporte wasn’t set off.

Indeed, as you can see in this footage, the defender clearly lashes out towards Everton defender Yerry Mina.

Did Laporte punch Yerry Mina?

Perhaps Laporte is saved by the fact that Mina makes an absolute meal out of the situation and so it looks as though he’s exaggerating the whole incident.

However, the fact is, the Man City centre-back clenches a fist and strikes the opposition player on the arm.

After all, as per the official FA Rules, it is violent conduct and therefore a red card when a player “attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.”

And so, some may argue that Laporte doesn’t make a whole lot of contract with Mina, but the rules say that isn’t relevant and as he clenches his fist and lashes out, it certainly seems as though he had attempted to use “excessive force”.

Remarkably, however – despite journalist Patrick Boyland noting on Twitter: “Mina down after contact from Laporte. VAR has to look at this surely…” – the incident was not reviewed and so the officials really seemed to drop the ball here.

Man City reporter for The Athletic Sam Lee certainly seemed to be less than impressed by the moment of madness, as he simply wrote: “Laporte mate.”

All in all, it seems the Spain international got away with one here. Who knows, had he been sent off, perhaps Everton would have got something from the game, breathing life into the relegation battle and disrupting the title race too

Referee May Have Made Major Error In Spurs Draw

Tottenham Hotspur may have been hard done by on Thursday night by referee Anthony Taylor after he failed to show Victor Lindelof a second yellow of the game.

Are Tottenham's Champions League dreams over?

After the rough weekend for the Lilywhites on Tyneside, Thursday's clash against Manchester United may have been a must-win to keep their faint hopes of Champions League football alive.

In truth, even a win for Spurs would've still provided them with an uphill challenge to land a spot inside the top four with just five games to go.

However, there will be positives to be taken from the game in north London with Ryan Mason's side showing a lot of desire to fight for their manager in the second half.

The first half showing optimised the issues at Spurs currently, however, the side which showed out for the second 45 minutes provided the fans something to cheer about.

Alongside some glaring misses, Spurs may feel they should have had a crack at three points against 10 men after Lindelof manhandled Son Heung-min to give away a free kick.

However, Anthony Taylor only awarded Tottenham the free kick and failed to pull a second yellow card out of his pocket for the Swede.

As it was not a dangerous challenge, VAR was unable to intervene, but an image of the incident shows the centre-back should feel very fortunate not to have been sent for an early shower:

Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min dragged down by Victor Lindelof who escaped another yellow card.

Should Lindelof have been red-carded?

The Swede probably felt an incredibly lucky man after Taylor only awarded the free kick as he done his absolute best to prevent Son without making any attempt for the ball.

Had he not already been on a yellow card, then it would have been interesting to see whether Taylor's decision would have been different.

The incident happened with around 20 minutes – including stoppage time – remaining on the clock with the north London side pushing for an equaliser.

Taking to Twitter during the game, The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare said: "Really should have been a second yellow for Lindelof."

Although Spurs probably should have played the remaining time against one-less man, they can only have themselves to blame for not winning the game.

Dire defending in the first half set them up for an uphill challenge in which they still missed some huge opportunities to win the game.

Eric Dier's header somehow was put wide from a matter of yards out and the South Korean could have had another on the night.

There were some positives to take for Spurs, it will be interesting to see if they carry into their next game away to Liverpool.

"Magnificent" Man City Star Set To Leave

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is set to leave the Etihad this summer, with his mind made up on a move to Barcelona, Football Insider report.

What’s the latest Man City news on Gundogan?

Gundogan, hailed as "magnificent" by Phil McNulty, has been on the books in Manchester since 2016 and has been a regular ever since arriving from Borussia Dortmund.

In total, the 32-year-old has made 293 appearances for the club, captaining the side on a number of occasions during the current campaign, although he didn’t feature in Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League win over Leicester City.

The midfielder has contributed to an impressive 92 goals in Sky Blue, however, he is out of contract in a matter of months, and an exit is on the cards.

Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke shared a story he’s heard from City regarding Gundogan in the last 48 hours. He stated that talks with the German over a new Etihad contract have made very little progress and that an exit on a free transfer seems inevitable, with the player making up his mind to join Barcelona.

The report adds how Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the midfielder and City in an ideal world, City do not want to lose his services, however, the club also do not want to stand in his way.

Will City need a replacement?

With Gundogan set to depart, Guardiola will be left with no out-and-out central midfielders in his side, with the rest of his options either holding or central midfielders, as per Transfermarkt.

Therefore, you’d like to think that the club will be in the market for a new central midfielder over the coming months, something club officials can be working on behind the scenes right now after hearing Gundogan’s decision, with Guardiola's full focus on a possible treble in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham has been earmarked as a potential replacement, and City are thought to be leading the likes of Real Madrid in the race for his services. A transfer could set City back a club-record fee of £130m+ for Bellingham, however, the teenager could well offer a long-term solution in midfield, possibly reuniting with former teammate Erling Haaland in the process.

Arsenal: Charles Watts slams Fabio Vieira after Europa League defeat

Journalist Charles Watts has slammed Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira for his performance as the Gunners were eliminated from the Europa League.

What happened to Arsenal against Sporting CP?

The Gunners were sub-par as Sporting CP took them to penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium, and were stunned as the visitors secured a place in the quarter-finals at their expense.

To make matters worse, William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu were substituted after suffering injuries, and despite Mikel Arteta naming a strong side, the Premier League leaders were knocked out.

Although there were a number of fairly poor performers, Fabio Vieira had a particularly disappointing night, and Watts has bemoaned his lack of confidence on the pitch.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts gave the Portuguese midfielder a match rating of 3/10 – lower than anyone else – and offered his thoughts on the ex-Porto man's display.

He said: "Vieira, I gave a three; I thought Vieira had a shocker. He got worse as the game went on as well.

"I don't know if it was just a complete lack of confidence after a few things didn't work out for him, but he had a really poor night.

"It was a big opportunity for him with Odegaard not starting, it was a big chance for Vieira to kind of stamp his authority on a game in a creative point of view and he just didn't do it. I thought it was a poor performance."

How has Vieira's first season at Arsenal been?

The midfielder signed from FC Porto for around £34m in the summer, but given his age and the length of his contract, it seems clear he arrived as a signing for the long term.

He has started just two of his 17 league appearances this season, and whilst his final ball has been impressive at times – registering six assists in all competitions – his slight physical stature has meant that he is sometimes bullied out of games.

Although he is still raw, question marks have started to appear over the 22-year-old, but there is clearly potential with Vieira.

A long-term injury to Emile Smith Rowe may have given Vieira more first-team opportunities than he would have got, but this may also have put more pressure on him to make more of an immediate impact in his first season at Arsenal.

He made 76 senior appearances for Porto, and was not even a regular starter until the latter part of the previous campaign. With 14 assists in just 15 league starts, he quickly established himself as one of Portugal's brightest talents, and whilst it has been a tough settling-in period for him, it is arguably too early to judge his time in the Premier League so far.

Therefore, the hope will be that his display against Sporting is not a sign of things to come.

Man United: Joe Hugill is Kane 2.0

Manchester United have impressed this season, winning their first trophy in six years with a League Cup final victory at Wembley over Newcastle United in February, and they could still technically win all four competitions they entered this season.

Erik ten Hag still has improvements to make however, with the side seemingly needing a world-class striker to give them the 30 goals a season boost that could make them genuine Premier League title contenders, and a move for Tottenham Hotspur captain Harry Kane has been mooted.

According to the Daily Mail, United are keen on signing the Englishman at the end of the season and there is little doubt the marksman would strengthen their attacking department.

Spurs have valued him at around £85m and this may prove too much for the Dutchman to spend. In fact, the boss may already have his answer to Kane in the United academy, with young striker Joe Hugill impressing recently.

Who is Joe Hugill?

United signed the youngster from Sunderland in 2020 and he has proven to be a fine piece of business for the club, especially with his excellent record in the youth teams.

The 19-year-old has scored 40 goals in 69 games for the U18, U19, and U21 sides during his spell at the Red Devils and he could be the out-and-out striker that Ten Hag is looking for.

Indeed, he has been likened to Kane with his style of play. Hugill isn’t the fastest player but knows exactly where the goal is and he is also the same height (6 foot 2) as the Spurs hitman, with a solid ability in the air.

His link-up play and ability to hold the ball up are also key strengths, similar to that of Kane’s and the next 12 months could be a crucial time in his development.

In 77 youth games at club level, Hugill has scored 44 goals and this means that the gem is averaging a goal every 1.75 matches – compared to Kane’s 1.7 goals per outing at club level in his career – suggesting that the youngster has the potential to be a prolific scorer.

U18 manager Travis Binnion heaped praise on the striker late last year, saying: “So for his first two games back [from injury] to be against Real Betis and Bolton’s first team, he’s been thrown in the deep end, and he’s done fine. He’s only going to get better and do better, so he needs and deserves a little bit of fortune.”

The teen gem may be boosted by the fact that Ten Hag has given youngsters such as Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Elanga, and Facundo Pellistri opportunities this term and with the Dutchman clearly needing another central attacking option, Hugill may just be the next player to make his senior bow.

Therefore, the head coach could unearth his own version of Kane, saving the club £85m in the process, by unleashing the teen centre-forward next term.
