West Ham claim emerges on Diego Carlos

Speaking live on Thursday during Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show, as transcribed by West Ham Zone, Kaveh Solhekol has made a claim involving the Irons and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.

The Lowdown: West Ham in defender hunt?

Despite summer signing Kurt Zouma edging closer to a return from injury, manager David Moyes and recruitment chief Rob Newman have still been tipped to potentially sign a centre-back this month.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

At one point, it was seen as more of a major priority for the Irons due to Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna’s absences from the squad with names like Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Liverpool Nathaniel Phillips repeatedly linked.

As the January 31 deadline looms, West Ham’s search for a major mid-season signing goes on, with Solhekol now sharing what he knows after speculation arose that the Hammers may be the unnamed London side to match Newcastle United’s bid for Carlos.

The Latest: Solhekol makes live TV claim…

Making on air claim involving West Ham and the 28-year-old, Sky’s reporter has moved quickly to quash any rumours that Moyes’ men are the mystery club.

“I know for a fact it’s not West Ham United,” he said (via WHZ).

“That leaves Chelsea, Spurs, Crystal Palace and I’m not sure Crystal Palace are looking to sign a centre-back or spend £30million on a centre-back.”

The Verdict: No surprise…

The colossal Brazilian, if West Ham had tabled the bid, would arguably excite fans going by his reputation – but the player’s price tag could represent too much of a hurdle for GSB.

Lauded as a ‘beast’ and ‘revelation’ by Spanish football analyst Domagoj Kostanjšak, Carlos has averaged an impressive 3.6 clearances per 90 over his 20 Spanish top flight starts this campaign (WhoScored).

By comparison to West Ham’s current crop, only Zouma has managed more in that time (5.2) – perhaps indicating he would have been an complimentary partner in Moyes’ central defence.

Alas, with the Irons not in contention after all, it appears the Scotsman may have his sights set on other defensive targets, and perhaps ones with a cheaper price tag.

Leeds missed out on Brahimi signing

Leeds United missed out on signing French youngster Bilal Brahimi in the January transfer window, according to a report which emerged on Friday.

The Lowdown: Brahimi joins Nice

The 21-year-old winger struggled during his short time with Angers, making just nine appearances for the French club after arriving last summer.

Despite this, Brahimi earned a move to fellow Ligue 1 outfit Nice during the January window, joining in a deal thought to be worth £6.3m.

While Leeds failed to make any new signings last month, a new update suggests that the versatile Nice attacker could have been plying his trade at Elland Road currently.

The Latest: Leeds missed out on youngster

Leeds fans heard plenty on the constant January links to Brenden Aaronson, but now comes a new name on Victor Orta’s radar which has not been reported elsewhere.

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds were one of a host of British clubs who wanted to sign Brahimi, with Wolves and Rangers also mentioned in the report.

It is claimed that Nice signed the two-time France Under-19 international, who can play on either wing or behind the striker, as an alternative to out-of-favour Manchester United man Jesse Lingard.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One that got away?

While Brahimi clearly struggled at Angers, he is a talented player who could have potentially been an exciting long-term addition for Leeds.

He registered 12 goals and 10 assists in just 34 appearances for Le Mans before joining Angers and if he was wanted by Marcelo Bielsa then the enigmatic boss clearly sees plenty of potential left to fulfil.

Attacking firepower has been Leeds’ downfall this season in the absence of Patrick Bamford for much of the time – they have only scored more than once in four Premier League games – and Brahimi could have helped solve that issue.

In other news, Leeds are still thought to be monitoring a British player ahead of a summer move. Read more here.

Joubert steps down as Titans captain

The Titans have announced that Pierre Joubert will step down as captain with effect from March 31

Cricinfo staff29-Mar-2010The Titans have announced that Pierre Joubert will step down as captain with effect from March 31. Joubert, who made his first-class debut for Northerns in 1995-96 as a 17-year-old, has led the team since 2008, securing four trophies during his three-season captaincy.”I wish to thank the players and Titans management for their support and commitment during the last three years,” said Joubert, who will continue to be available for the Titans. “It was an honour for me to captain arguably the best franchise in the country. I wish the new captain all the best, and as a Titans player and supporter, I will be backing him 100 per cent.”The Titans’ dramatic victory over the Eagles in the penultimate SuperSport Series game of the season was Joubert’s last match in charge of the team. He picked up 4 for 24 to spark a dramatic collapse in the Eagles’ second innings as Titans scraped to a two-wicket win despite Rilee Rossouw’s record-breaking 319 on the first day. The result enabled Titans to fill the runners-up spot on the final log behind the Cape Cobras.”Pierre has been a committed servant to the Nashua Titans and the game of cricket,” said Vincent Sinovich, chairman of the Easterns Titans board and president of Northerns Cricket. “He was part of the representative sides from Under 13 and captained the Provincial Amateur team for two years before he was appointed captain of the franchise.”Joubert captained the side to victory in both the MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Pro20 Series in 2007-08. The Titans retained the domestic championship title in 2008-09, and also finished at the top of the SuperSport Series log in that season.”Above all these achievements, he is a true gentleman of the game,” added Sinovich. “The respect he has earned from players, administrators and spectators will long be remembered by all who know him. Pierre, on behalf of the Northerns Executive and Easterns Titans Franchise Board of Directors, sincere thanks for all you have done for the franchise and Northerns Cricket.”

Manchester United: Fans react to Joao Felix contact

Manchester United have made contact over a possible move for Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.

That’s according to Spanish newspaper AS, relayed by Sports Witness, and, as to be expected, the update has had a number of United fans talking on social media.

The 22-year-old is valued at £63m by Transfermarkt and is extremely versatile, capable of playing anywhere in attack. He’s scored 20 times in 88 appearances for Madrid after joining back in 2019 from Benfica in a deal worth £114m.

It now seems as if the Portugal international is on the club’s radar, with Sports Witness relaying claims suggesting United have ‘already asked for’ the forward.

Fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United are also name-checked with an interest, with Felix’s contract not up until 2026.

A move away from Atletico may materialise, though, with the report revealing Felix’s representatives are now ‘studying various alternatives to try to convince’ Atletico to let the forward depart.

Sachin Tendulkar has opted out of the tri-series in Bangladesh starting on January 4. He will be replaced by Rohit Sharma in the 16-man squad. Yuvraj Singh has also been included despite a finger injury scare that kept him out of four ODIs in the five-match series against Sri Lanka.Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar have been dropped and replaced by Sreesanth and Ashok Dinda, who made his Twenty20 debut for India earlier this month. Amit Mishra displaced Pragyan Ojha in an inexplicable game of musical chairs for the back-up spinner’s role. Ravindra Jadeja retained his spot as the lone allrounder.Sreesanth, who did not play a role in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka due to swine flu, has recovered and been named in the squad. The rookie Sudeep Tyagi, a part of the current ODI squad, has kept his place despite not playing a game. Dinesh Karthik has been named as the second wicketkeeper in the squad to Bangladesh.Rohit, 22, who was dropped from India’s ODI squad after an extended run of disappointing scores in limited-overs cricket, last played in the West Indies in July and was pushed aside by Virat Kohli in the batting line-up. Kohli took his chances with both hands, scoring half-centuries in the Champions Trophy and against Sri Lanka before hitting his maiden ODI century to seal the series win against Sri Lanka. Rohit paved his way back through a triple-century in the last round of Ranji Trophy league matches.Ishant, who was dropped for the first two ODIs against Sri lanka, failed to impress on his return – thanks to Sreesanth’s illness – for the later half of the series. In 14 overs in those two matches, he went for 130 runs, and failed to keep up the pressure along with Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra. He managed just two wickets at an average of 65.00 and an economy rate of 9.28. Before that, during the series against Australia at home, he managed five wickets in four matches at 30.00 each. West Ham fans buzz over Lingard update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing following ExWHUemployee’s update on transfer target Jesse Lingard.

Despite failing to sign the Manchester United star on a permanent deal last summer, prompting the club to turn to Nikola Vlasic as an alternative, they have been heavily tipped to return for another attempt in January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes as Lingard continues to be a bit-part player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having played just 63 minutes of Premier League football this season (WhoScored).

Reports have even suggested that United could opt to offload the 28-year-old for as little as £10 million in the winter window, possibly alerting West Ham as they reportedly eye a move.

Now, sharing an update on the West Ham Way Podcast, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has shared an update on the Irons’ stance over making a mid-season move.

As per his information, it is believed that West Ham will make a move for the playmaker early in January as manager David Moyes eyes reinforcements.

West Ham fans buzz…

Given his obvious quality and dream spell on loan over the second half of 2020/2021, many Hammers supporters have been left buzzing on social media.

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ and the best Premier League player on current form by talkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham back in April, his nine goals and four assists in 16 West Ham outings highlight just what he could bring under Moyes.

As Ex makes this claim, which one fan called ‘great news’, it’s little wonder many Irons are ecstatic.

Celtic: Jullien injury return date unclear

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that there is still no timeframe in regards to Christopher Jullien making a Celtic return, as reported by Jo Hendry.

The Lowdown: Jullien’s terrible 2021…

The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for the Hoops for almost 12 months now after suffering a serious knee injury against Dundee United just after Christmas 2020.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-17/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Frenchman, labelled as ‘excellent’ by former Hoops boss Neil Lennon, is yet to feature under Postecoglou, who brought in a number of defensive additions over the summer.

Jullien returned to training back in October, but he hasn’t managed to feature in a competitive match for the Bhoys in the current campaign.

The Latest: No timeframe…

Postecoglou confirmed on Wednesday prior to the meeting with Hearts that Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic would be available to fact Hearts tonight.

However, Carl Starfelt and Giorgos Giakoumakis remain sidelined, while no timeframe has been given in regards to Jullien’s return.

The Verdict: Not ideal…

It’s been more than six weeks since Jullien returned to training, so it appears as if the Hoops are being extremely cautious when it comes to the centre-back.

Celtic have a very busy month ahead with nine fixtures in all competitions, so it isn’t ideal being without Starfelt and still having no timeframe when it comes to the French centre-back.

Hopefully, we will learn more on Jullien before the end of the year, but at this moment in time, it appears as if we may not see the 28-year-old defender until 2022.

Newcastle eyeing Alexandre Lacazette

Newcastle United have their eye on Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The lowdown

According to The Athletic last month, the writing is seemingly on the wall for the 30-year-old at Arsenal as he approaches the end of his contract in June. He could be available on a cut-price deal in January if the Gunners want to avoid losing him for free.

Lacazette has only started three Premier League games so far this season, his solitary goal rescuing a point against Crystal Palace, although Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher applauded him for an ‘outstanding’ performance in that game.

The latest

According to Konur on Twitter, Newcastle are ‘closely monitoring the situation’ of Lacazette at the Emirates Stadium.

They aren’t the only club keeping tabs, though, with his former employers Lyon also lurking as the Ligue 1 outfit have plans to bring him back when the January transfer window rolls around.

The verdict

Lacazette has proven himself to be a reliable Premier League goalscorer by netting 51 times in 134 appearances in the division.

Newly-installed Newcastle manager Eddie Howe already has a proven marksman at his disposal in the form of Callum Wilson, but according to Transfermarkt, the 43-year-old’s preferred formation is a 4-4-2. That would mark a change from the setups employed by Steve Bruce and Graeme Jones in recent weeks as both often went with just one central striker.

If Howe wants to implement a 4-4-2 at St James’ Park, he may need an upgrade on Joelinton and Dwight Gayle, who between them have scored just 11 Premier League goals since the start of the 2019/20 season. Lacazette, who has more than double that tally on his own in the same timeframe, would give Howe a much more potent option to partner with Wilson, and he could come relatively cheap if Arsenal want to make some money on him before letting him walk away as a free agent next summer.
