Steven Smith: Justin Langer seeking improvement just as I am

Smith said there had been conversations with the coach in the weeks since the end of the India series

Steven Smith has paralleled his evolving tale as a Test batsman, in which he emerged from a brief run of low scores against India to make the runs in Sydney and Brisbane that clinched his third Allan Border Medal, with the need for Australia’s coach Justin Langer to keep continually improving as a mentor and man manager. As the world’s pre-eminent Test batsman for most of the past six years, it’s unsurprising that Smith revealed Langer gave him very little coaching whatsoever, aside from an occasional reminder to stay energetic on his feet at the crease. But he credited Langer for maintaining an attitude of learning and seeking feedback, though acknowledging that unvarnished opinions would not always be easy to find.”I think even if you speak to Justin, you want to be improving all the time as a coach or as a player, so of course there’s things you can always get better at,” Smith said. “One thing that hasn’t been spoken a lot about is how tough a job it is to coach an international team, particularly in the circumstances we’ve been in when we’ve been in bubbles for long periods of time.”But Justin’s always working hard, trying to improve and get better and we’ve had conversations over the last two weeks since we’ve finished and he’s always trying to get better and better and that’s all you can ask from a coach.”Langer and Smith’s earliest interactions took place in 2010, when Smith was playing his first Tests for Australia and the coach was a batting assistant seeking to smooth the rough edges of players including him, David Warner and the late Phillip Hughes. Since Smith’s return to Test cricket for the 2019 Ashes, their relationship has been largely a case of the coach keeping out of the way of a batsman in command of himself and his game.Related

“Justin’s actually said about me before he doesn’t try and coach me too much,” Smith said. “Only every now and again he’ll say something particularly about the energy in my legs and tell me to have a bit more energy and that helps me move my feet a bit better and get going. He just lets me go about my business and do what I need to do. But he’s great around the group, he’s always improving and wants to get better and wants the feedback from the players, and I think that’s really important as a coach.”Sometimes it can be difficult to get that feedback, you always want to get better, you always want to learn on the job and I think he does that as well as anyone.”While it would be well beyond the realm of possibility for a player to give his frankest thoughts on the national team’s senior coach and selector during an open media call, Smith responded in the affirmative when asked directly whether Langer had his full support to keep coaching the team in all formats.”Absolutely, I think he’s done a terrific job over the last couple of years, I wasn’t there the first year, but since I’ve been back I think he’s done a great job,” Smith said. “He always wants to get better and that’s all you can ask of anyone in the setup, whether it be a player or a coach, as long as you’re striving to improve every day, then that’s all you can ask.”That kind of thing [split coaching] has been floated for a while for different formats and different teams and things like that around the world, not just Australia, so I think it’d be interesting. But Justin’s got my full support at the moment, I think he’s doing a terrific job and he has done for a few years, and I can’t see it changing anytime soon.”Steven Smith said he had enjoyed the battle of overcoming new tactics against him•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

As for Smith’s own evolution, he said the past two summers had been refreshing in their challenges, as New Zealand and then India provided new angles of attack and filed placings that restricted him from some of his usual areas to rotate strike. After two slim Test matches in Adelaide and Melbourne, Smith resorted to a more aggressive mindset in Sydney and Brisbane, running up his first century since 2019 in England in the process.”Teams are starting to attack me a little bit differently or bowl to me a little bit differently, so I’ve had to make small adjustments,” he said. “At times I’ve had to be perhaps a little more aggressive than I have been in the past. I think I did that pretty well in the last two Test matches here and just coming up with some different plans and different scoring options but continuing to also play the game in front of me.”There’s times in Test cricket where you’ve got to absorb pressure, time when you’ve got to put the pressure back on the bowlers and try and get on top of them, and I did that well in the last two games, perhaps not as well in the first two of the summer. I felt I learned a bit out of the first two games that I could improve on at the back end. Teams have different plans to me and I’ve got to keep working on my game and I love doing that, I love working hard and finding new ways to do things and getting better.”It was a great challenge and that’s what Test cricket’s all about, people come with different plans to you and you’ve got to try to counter-act them. It’s been a great learning curve. I’ve loved the last two years of developing and learning and absorbing pressure putting pressure on when I need to, and just continuing to grow as a player.”

Al-Ahli now considering bid to sign £190,000-per-week Tottenham superstar

Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are now considering signing a Tottenham superstar in what would be a pretty ambitious summer swoop, coming after a key departure from the Middle East.

Players who could still leave Tottenham before deadline day

Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic were the first players to depart Spurs this summer, with their contracts expiring late last month. They were soon followed by former club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele after the club agreed to terminate his deal a year early.

Ndombele has since joined OGC Nice in Ligue 1, making a return to his homeland on a free deal. Sessegnon is yet to find a new club since leaving Tottenham, while Perisic and Dier remain at Hadjuk Split and Bayern Munich respectively after they both agreed to join their sides on loan in January.

Tanganga also returned to Millwall on a permanent deal after spending last season on a temporary stint at The Den. Wales international Joe Rodon's exit is the only departure which has made Daniel Levy any immediate money back, having re-joined Leeds United in a £10 million move with Archie Gray going in the other direction.

Midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has joined Marseille on an initial loan deal, but while it'll start as being a temporary move, the Ligue 1 side are obligated to buy him for around £17 million at the end of next season – with Spurs therefore in line for a windfall next year.

So, plenty of senior players have quit N17, and there could be even more. As first reported by reliable club insider Paul O'Keefe, Girona are in talks with Spurs over signing Bryan Gil, coming after the Spaniard's lack of chances under Ange Postecoglou last season.

Tottenham have also been keen to use Giovani Lo Celso in a swap deal for Jacob Ramsey, putting the Argentine's future into doubt, while AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund are chasing a deal for Emerson Royal.

According to recent reports, Spurs are also willing to entertain bids for Richarlison amid interest from Saudi Arabia, so there could be a few more outgoings on the horizon before deadline day on August 30.

Al-Ahli considering bid for Tottenham superstar Son Heung-min

Few would put superstar player Son Heung-min up for sale, despite his age (32) and contract expiring in under 12 months. The South Korea legend finished last season as Postecoglou's top scorer in all competitions, with 17 goals and 10 assists.

The £190,000-per-week forward is far too crucial to sell this summer, and efforts must be made to tie Son down with a new contract. While it is unlikely that Levy and co will entertain offers, that hasn't stopped Saudi side Al-Ahli from eyeing an ambitious move.

Indeed, according to journalist Rudy Galetti, Al-Ahli are considering a bid to sign Son from Tottenham this summer, as they look to replace Allan Saint-Maximin – who left for Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahce on a season-long loan.

It is unclear just how much the north Londoners would even consider selling for, but it could need to be a serious marquee figure.

Bruno will love him: Man Utd pushing to sign £34m star alongside Zirkzee

Manchester United have felt like a team in transition for over a decade, and while the interminable wait for a 21st top-flight title rages on, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS cohort have sown the seeds of hope at Old Trafford.

It certainly hasn't been plain sailing for Erik ten Hag since he was anointed as first-team manager two years ago, but for all the rebuke, the hardship, Man United have won a trophy in each of the Dutchman's two terms – the Carabao Cup in 2022/23 and the FA Cup last season.

Bruising injury issues precluded any chance of competing against the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in a fight for the Premier League title, and while the Red Devils were disjointed and unacceptable in their performances for much of the season, Ten Hag had a point when consistently pointing toward his club's medical room.

The defence was often the point of concern, and now that Raphael Varane's £350k-per-week contract has expired, INEOS are essaying to bolster their backline with an exciting addition.

Man Utd transfer news

As per Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich's Matthijs De Ligt has given Man United the green light ahead of a potential summer transfer, with efforts being made over the past week to bring him to the club.

De Ligt is currently performing for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 which will naturally slow down negotiations, though there is a willingness from all parties to get the deal done.

Bayern are hoping to collect a fee of €40m (£34m) for the 24-year-old's sale, who is now set to try his hand in the Premier League after a prodigious start to life on the major stage with Ajax – under the tutelage of none other than Ten Hag.

Why Man Utd are interested in Matthijs De Ligt

There is something of a theme at Man United concerning Ten Hag's preference to target former stars, tried and tested under his wing previously, though this has worked out to varying degrees of success.

Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt

Lisandro Martinez might have endured a luckless 2023/24 campaign for the Red Devils, beset by injuries, but the Argentinian centre-back is a high-quality player. Antony, purchased from Ajax for £86m shortly after Ten Hag's arrival, hasn't quite had the desired effect, scoring just once in the league last term.

But De Ligt is a brilliant player and would be nothing other than a coup for the Premier League side, described as a "monster" by Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard.

Signing for Bayern from Juventus two years ago for a fee of £68m, the 6 foot 2 titan has featured 73 times, scored five goals and won the Bundesliga 2022/23 Bundesliga title, but his efforts last year were ruined by injury, limiting him to just 16 starting appearances in the top flight.

Still, he more than managed to showcase his skills. As per FBref, De Ligt ranked among the top 12% of central defenders in the Bundesliga last season for goals scored, the top 2% for pass completion, the top 7% for progressive passes, the top 18% for passes attempted and the top 20% for aerial duels won per 90.

De Ligt for Bayern Munich.

Had he found better fortune on the fitness front, the former prodigy might have been able to provide Thomas Tuchel's outfit with a greater chance of retaining their league title and staving off Bayer Leverkusen, but it wasn't to be.

Why De Ligt could be a significant signing

De Ligt is an elite-level defender, having been praised in the past as a "real phenomenon" by retired Italian footballer Sergio Brio.

His rousing leadership, steely defensive skills and modern-day tailored passing range make him the perfect player to join Man United and lift the club closer toward the forefront of the Premier League.

Earning £260k per week in Munich, the 45-cap Netherlands star would not come cheap but the aforementioned Varane's recent departure mitigates the issue of funding the acquisition.

Partnering him alongside Martinez, there's no telling how slick and stylish the Old Trafford rearguard could look down the line, and it might even be a deal to convince Bruno Fernandes to remain at the club.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes. Manchester United's Magnifico. The Portugal international has been quite the talisman since signing from Sporting Lisbon for an initial fee of £47m in January 2020, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, posting 79 goals and 66 assists over 233 fixtures and playing an instrumental role in the trophy-winning success of the past few years.

He ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for passes attempted and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90. In a few words: he's cut from the finest cloth.

However, the 29-year-old is about to enter the penultimate year of his contract and has been at the centre of rumours regarding interest from the Saudi Pro League of late, and United must now show their commitment toward returning to the very top of the European game to retain the services of an irreplaceable leader and playmaker.

Let's not forget, United might have won silverware but this has cloaked over a dismal overall campaign that saw an eighth-place finish in the Premier League (with just 60 points) and a bottom-place finish in their Champions League group phase.

De Ligt might not have enjoyed the most auspicious of campaigns in Bavaria but he is a wonderful player and would surely serve as an upgrade on Varane, with years yet to ply his trade formidably in the Premier League.

Fernandes is the fulcrum of all that flows freely toward the final third at Man United, and losing him would simply be detrimental. INEOS must prove that they mean business; there needs to be an exodus at the Theatre this summer, but the Portuguese cannot get lost among the outgoing flotsam.

Leeds chasing "fabulous" £40k-p/w ace who has won the Championship before

Leeds United have been credited with an interest in a former Championship winner as they look to do just that next season after a mini overhaul in this summer's transfer window.

Leeds on a budget

After missing out on Championship promotion last season, Daniel Farke's side could look very different come the opening weekend of the new season.

Alongside Aaronson: Leeds must bring back star who's "too good" for the EFL

The Whites should bring the impressive central defender back to Elland Road next season.

ByDan Emery Jun 12, 2024

Financial issues mean that they are likely to lose the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto, while they are likely only to be able to strengthen their squad via loan deals and free transfers.

With that in mind, they have targetted Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist, while they are also keen to re-sign Joe Rodon. And he might not be the only Spurs man making the move to Yorkshire.

Leeds target loan addition

Now, it has emerged that Leeds may line up a move for midfield man Oliver Skipp this summer. Farke has worked with the Tottenham man before, with the pair spending a season together at Norwich City, where Skipp was virtually ever-present in Norwich's title winning side.

And Farke has made his feelings on the Englishman crystal clear, admitting that his actions speak louder than words.

“I am quite careful in praising them too much but actions are more important than any words and when you look at Oliver’s season you can realise that he has played more or less every second in the league for us, for a side that has lots of competition in the squad.

“This says a lot about how much I rate him and how much I value him, I don’t want to praise him too much in public, it’s more like each and every day I keep on criticising him."

In the years since, Skipp has struggled to nail down a regular spot at Tottenham, appearing 21 times in Ange Postecoglou's maiden Premier League season but managing just five starts, while Spurs are thought to be keen to strengthen in midfield this summer, which could leave the 23-year-old further down the pecking order.

Indeed, across his three seasons in north London, he has still managed fewer league minutes than he did across his single season in the Championship.

Despite his rare outings, he has drawn praise from Ex-Tottenham icon Glen Hoddle, who hailed one particularly "fabulous" piece of defending in a defeat to Brentford.

“It’s a fabulous bit of defensive work as well. The little ball goes in, Toney’s offside, it’s true he doesn’t attempt to play the ball. He leaves it. But Skipp, his awareness defensively to get that is amazing. He covered the ground, it’s excellent defending.”

But his opportunities to showcase his ability look to be reducing further in north London.

Farke may be ready to offer him a way out, with The Athletic [via Football League World] revealing that Leeds have taken an interest in the 23-year-old as a potential replacement for either Archie Gray or Ilia Gruev, both of whom have been linked with departures this summer.

Any move would be a loan deal, with Skipp still having three years left to run on his £40,000 a week deal with the Lilywhites. The club already have a strong relationship with Tottenham, having taken Joe Rodon on loan last season and hoping to keep him permanently should they be able to afford it.

In Skipp, they could find a ready-made Farke player who can help them go one better next season after heartbreak this time around, and the move could offer Skipp a much-needed career lifeline under a coach that knows him inside out.

Top-heavy Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad look for right XIs, rise in points table

Big picture

Two teams that, on paper, are heavily reliant on their top order face off in Dubai – it’s Kings XI Punjab against Sunrisers Hyderabad, both teams in the bottom three of the IPL 2020 points table at this stage. The Kings XI have lost their last three games and are last among the eight sides despite KL Rahul (302) and Mayank Agarwal(272) being among the top three run-scorers this season. The pair’s success – they have scored over 63% of the team’s runs so far – has meant that the middle order has been left a bit undercooked. And with no bowler apart from Mohammed Shami and Ravi Bishnoi quite hitting their groove, many team combinations (15 players in five games) have been tried – and discarded – leaving them with an unsettled-looking XI. They need to break their run of defeats urgently, or risk going another season without a final-four finish, having last reached there in 2014.Rahul, despite all the runs, is a concern too. With strike rates of 122 in balls 1-10, 119 in 11-20, 103 in 21-30 and 123 in 31-40, the downside of putting a price on his wicket and being an anchor is that the team is being forced to underutilise their big-hitting resources – Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Sarfaraz Khan and sometimes James Neesham – down the order. As for their bowling, Shami and Sheldon Cottrell have found the early breakthroughs to make them the best powerplay bowling side going around. But despite that, the Kings XI has taken two or more wickets only once between overs seven and 15 so far, and the lack of breakthroughs have meant conceding plenty in the death overs. Will Chris Jordan keep his place, or can they finally find space for Mujeeb Ur Rahman? The Sunrisers, currently sixth, are better off – but only just – having learnt that Bhuvneshwar Kumar is out for the season following a thigh injury he picked up against the Chennai Super Kings.David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey have contributed in a few games, but none of them has been consistent. And on days when two or more of them fail, the pressure shifts on their very young middle and lower order. While that has meant the likes of Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad have had the chances to impress, the Sunrisers could consider allrounders Mohammad Nabi or Fabian Allen to add a bit of experience. That, though, would most likely mean leaving out Williamson. In Kumar’s absence, their pace unit is inexperienced too.Overall, there’s no clear favourite entering the contest. Both sides need to get going before the early movers break away from the pack, and Thursday’s contest could be the start of that – for one of the two teams.

In the news

Prithvi Raj Yarra has been named Kumar’s replacement, but it may be a while before he gets a game, especially if the more experienced fellow left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed – who missed the Sunrisers’ game over the weekend – is fit.Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s exit robs the Sunrisers Hyderabad attack of a lot of experience•BCCI

Likely XIs

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Priyam Garg, 6 Abhishek Sharma, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Sandeep Sharma, 10 Siddarth Kaul, 11 T NatarajanKings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul (capt), 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Mandeep Singh, 4 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Sarfaraz Khan, 7 Chris Jordan/James Neesham, 8 Harpreet Brar/M Ashwin, 9 Sheldon Cottrell, 10 Mohammad Shami, 11 Ravi Bishnoi

Stats that matter

  • Last season, the Sunrisers’ opening pair of Warner and Bairstow got over 60% of the team’s runs, scoring at a strike rate of 164 while getting three half-century and four century stands. This season, they have just a solitary fifty-plus stand so far. Among batsmen with at least four innings, Bairstow (105) and Warner (111) are ahead of only Sunil Narine (87) on the list of poorest powerplay strike rates.
  • Agarwal has faced only four googlies this season, but has been dismissed twice by them; 57% of Rashid Khan’s deliveries this season have been googlies.
  • Warner has scored a half-century in each of his last eight matches against the Kings XI.
  • The Kings XI concede 14.8 runs per over in the death overs, the poorest among all teams.

Farke targeting Leeds swoop for "outstanding" £3k-p/w Championship star

Leeds United are currently preparing for a second straight season in the Championship after they fell short of achieving promotion this season. The Whites made it all the way to the play-off final at Wembley last month only to lose 1-0 to Southampton, thanks to a first-half goal from Adam Armstrong.

Daniel Farke and his team must now navigate the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business on Friday, to end it with a squad that is capable of fighting for promotion once again.

Connor Roberts

It has already been reported that the Yorkshire-based outfit are unlikely to bring Connor Roberts back from Burnley however, as the recently relegated side may not want to strengthen a rival, whilst Alfie Gilchrist from Chelsea has been linked as a target in that position as well.

Leeds United's interest in Championship star

According to Leeds Live, the Whites are eyeing up a possible swoop to sign Sunderland right-back Trai Hume, as Farke seemingly targets a deal for the defender. The report claims that the Northern Ireland international is a transfer target for the club this summer as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Central midfielder Archie Gray spent the majority of this season deputising at right-back and could move back to his preferred position if Leeds can strike a deal for Hume, or another full-back, over the coming weeks or months.

Trai Hume

LeedsLive add that they are set to fight multiple Premier League sides to land the Black Cats star, who has attracted attention from a host of clubs with his performances in the Championship.

The outlet names Leicester City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth as three of the other English teams eyeing him up, alongside Italian outfit Napoli.

This suggests that there is plenty of competition to land his signature before the end of the summer transfer window, whilst it remains to be seen whether or not Sunderland are prepared to cash in on him.

Why Hume could be a good Roberts alternative

With a second deal for Roberts reportedly being unlikely, Hume could be snapped up as a fantastic alternative to the Wales international ahead of next season. The £3k-per-week defender, who was once described as "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting, is a proven Championship performer who could come in and hit the ground running at Elland Road.

Roberts only started two league games for Leeds during the second half of this term but did feature regularly in the division for Burnley during the 2022/23 campaign as they won the title.

As you can see in the table above, Hume's displays on the pitch for the Black Cats this season were more impressive than the Welsh ace's were for the Clarets in their title-winning year. Despite ending with five fewer assists, the Northern Irish whiz created four more 'big chances' for his teammates, whilst winning possession back through tackles and interceptions significantly more frequently.

Therefore, the potential is there for the 22-year-old ace to be a fantastic alternative to Roberts due to the quality he could provide at both ends of the pitch.

Mohammad Hafeez, Haider Ali shine as Pakistan seal narrow win to level series

Pakistan 190 for 4 (Hafeez 86*, Haider 54, Jordan 2-29) beat England 185 for 8 (Moeen 61, Riaz 2-26) by five runsA 100-run partnership between two men two decades apart in age saw Pakistan eke out their first win of the tour on the day before they are due to return home. It denied England a sixth consecutive T20I series win, while Pakistan pick up a first away win in any format since the ODI World Cup last year. The 39-year old Mohammad Hafeez was the standout star of the win, caressing an unbeaten 52-ball 86 to power his side to 190, while a valiant fightback, spearheaded by Moeen Ali’s 33-ball 61, fell just five shy of powering England to a stunning win.It was a series that came down to the final ball, quite literally, and when Tom Curran lifted Haris Rauf for a gorgeous six over extra cover off the penultimate delivery, England needed one more such blow to seal a series win. Babar Azam panicked, while a swarm of fielders rushed to pester the fast bowler with all kinds of advice. He blocked it all out and sent down an unplayable yorker at 90mph to secure the win, the final two balls a microcosm of Pakistan on tour, and Pakistan in general. One minute down, next minute up.It was Hafeez, perhaps unfairly lumped in with Shoaib Malik as an example of the visitors’ failure to adopt modern T20 practices, who provided the ballast to get the innings back on track after a faltering start. With Moeen having removed Fakhar Zaman early, and Curran knocking Babar’s stumps back soon after, England were enjoying the perfect Powerplay. Hafeez stablised the innings while Haider Ali, with the impudence of youth, went hell for leather, but once he lofted Adil Rashid for a six over midwicket, he roared straight into top gear. Helped, at times, by England bowling to his strengths and missing their lengths, Hafeez plundered 69 off the next 34 balls to spearhead the innings, taking them to within touching distance of the total that proved just short on Sunday.Pakistan began this tour two months ago in a protective bubble, but when, on the final day, they removed the bubble-wrap off their youngest squad member, they discovered quite the player residing within. Haider began his T20I career looking like a man who knew how this format needed to be played, clearing his front leg off the second ball he faced, depositing it over cow corner. Time and again, when England appeared to set a field willing to yield a single to him in that area, he declined the deal, opting to go over the top instead. Having sat out and watched England ease to a target of 195 two days ago, he didn’t need complex statistical information to recognise a boundary would be handier than a single. Within no time, he had become the first Pakistani to score a half-century on debut, one that came in just 28 balls.Wahab Riaz gets a hug•AFP

Pakistan decided to leave out Mohammad Rizwan, so often sensational behind the stumps, in favour of Sarfaraz Ahmed, for a greater perceived ability with the bat. But while he didn’t feature in the first innings, but when a key moment arose, Sarfaraz froze. Quite literally, and somewhat inexplicably, when Shadab fooled the out-of-form Moeen to leave him stranded outside his crease, Sarfaraz failed to gather properly. Time stood still as Moeen looked back and watched helplessly, waiting to see the bails whipped off, while Sarfaraz appeared to cradle the ball, unable to get it to his hands, and then to the stumps. With England so far behind in the game, it seemed like a comedic footnote. When Moeen stormed to a half-century half an hour later, no one in green was grinning. While the defeat might sting, Moeen’s return to form may yet prove the biggest positive for England. When, in the 16th over, he hit three sixes in four balls off Shadab, expending less energy than it presumably takes most people to butter bread, the idea this was a man out of form and bereft of confidence stretched credulity. When he displayed his T20 smarts with a couple of sneakily stolen boundaries off Shaheen Afridi in the 18th, to bring England within touching distance of victory, he seemed indispensable. Now, he may well be.England’s first ten overs with the bat, though, was perhaps what cost them most dearly. With the game being played on a fresh pitch and a very short boundary on one side, the hosts would have fancied a chase of 191, but that became significantly more challenging when Afridi bowled Jonny Bairstow with a perfect outswinging yorker that took the base of the off stump with it. Dawid Malan fell trying to clear the square leg boundary, only for Fakhar Zaman to pluck it out of the air on tiptoe, but Tom Banton kept the momentum going. With his captain Eoin Morgan, he struck up the sort of partnership that might have put them back on track, notably never letting the normally economical Imad Wasim settle, spanking four fours off his first seven balls. It would all end horribly, though, with Morgan, in the form of his career, dismissed in the worst possible way. Brilliant work in the circle saw Azam cut off what should have been a boundary, and Morgan, cantering towards the other end, found himself stranded mid-pitch. It put even more pressure on Banton to ensure he went deep, but he fell five balls later to Haris Rauf, trapped in front and ruled lbw on review. It meant asking a shade too much of the lower order, even if, on a tour where social distancing dominated the conversation, England got uncomfortably close.

It was a strong end to what has largely been a positive campaign at St Mary's, but they now face the lottery of the play-offs, joining Leeds, West Brom and Norwich City in the battle to join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season.

Southampton ended up finishing in fourth place, meaning they have lined up a two-legged semi-final meeting with West Brom, as they look to get the better of the Baggies and seal a place in the final at Wembley later this month.

In order for the south coast side to have the best possible chance of returning to the top flight at the first attempt, they need as few injuries as possible, but Martin saw key striker Che Adams leave the field prematurely at home to Leeds. It was an immediate worry ahead of next Sunday's trip to the Hawthorns to take on the Baggies, putting the Scotland international in doubt for the game.

Martin drops significant Southampton news

Speaking after the Leeds game on Saturday [via the Echo], Martin gave a positive Southampton injury update regarding Adams. Clearly, the Saints boss had no intention of taking any chances, especially with their league position safe.

"He felt a bit of tightness. There is no point carrying on and risking him after that. I think he will be alright. Thankfully we also had Ross Stewart to bring on today, which was really amazing for us."

Southampton striker Che Adams.

This has to be seen as an encouraging update for Southampton, considering Russell seems confident of Adams making a swift recovery, and he does at least have a week to further work on his recovery.

The 27-year-old would be a massive loss for Saints given the fact that he scored 16 goals in the regular Championship season and netted twice in the FA Cup, also chipping in with four assists. Ally McCoist has lauded him in the past, too, which is high praise from Scottish legend, saying:

"First and foremost, we now have a striker who is a first pick every week for a very good team in the English Premier League. It’s been a long time since a Scotland manager has had that luxury. Adams has started his international career really positively and has scored in the last two games against Moldova and Denmark. Apart from that, his general play has been terrific."

Southampton can ease big injury worry by unleashing "unbelievable" star

Southampton will hope other strikers can come up trumps if this star is out injured.

Adams' vast experience could be priceless for Southampton in the two legs against West Brom and in the final if they make it, so the hope is that he is in the starting lineup at The Hawthorns next weekend, shrugging off this current knock.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Carsley, stepping into the England manager's role after Southgate’s departure, named his first England squad last week. The selection marked a fresh start for the national team, with several notable changes made under Carsley’s management. One of the most significant absentees from the squad was the experienced Walker, a player who had been a key figure during Southgate’s tenure, including England’s recent Euro 2024 campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Carsley introduced four newcomers to the team: Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Noni Madueke. Livramento and Trent Alexander-Arnold, alongside Walker’s Manchester City teammate Rico Lewis, will compete for the right-back position as the 34-year-old defender faces an uphill task in making a comeback into the international fold.

  • WHAT WALKER SAID

Although crestfallen, Walker admitted that Carsley’s decision to leave him out of the squad for these upcoming matches is justified, given his current lack of playing time for Manchester City this season.

"I’m disappointed," Walker acknowledged. "You have to accept it and just try to prove them wrong. With a new manager, you are always expecting a few changes. I'm disappointed because to represent your country is always the highest thing. But I haven't played any minutes this season so you have to take it on the chin. I've not performed at any level since coming back from the (Euro), so I think it's the right call from him."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

When explaining his squad selection for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, Carsley highlighted Walker’s lack of minutes as a key reason for his omission.

"I wanted to put a mark on the squad," Carsley said. "Kyle hasn’t played this season. City are phasing him in gently and we have to respect that."
