Burnley eyeing move to sign versatile Archie Brown for Vincent Kompany

Winning the Championship in style last season, Vincent Kompany's Burnley side entered the Premier League in the hope of kicking on even further. As we approach the halfway mark, however, the Clarets sit 19th and five points adrift of safety, having endured a disastrous start to the season. A recent 5-0 thumping of Sheffield United gave them a much-needed boost, before a solid draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, but Komany's side still have a lot of work to do.

Reinforcements could be the key to their improvement, whether that be sticking to their summer transfer tactic of welcoming young players or, instead, perhaps those more experienced this time around. That said, reports suggest that the Clarets are eyeing one particular in-demand player.

Burnley transfer news

Those at Turf Moor opted for players with the potential to turn into Premier League regulars such as James Trafford and Zeki Amdouni rather than those more established in England's top flight and have since faced the short-term consequences of relegation trouble.

Burnley now lining up cut-price move for "outstanding" player in January

The Clarets aren’t the only side keen.

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 6, 2023

Burnley have won just twice all season, with one of those victories coming recently, highlighting just how slowly they started the current campaign. In that run, Kompany may have learned a lot about his players, which could see him target one specific reinforcement.

Zeki-Amdouni-Burnley

According to The Daily Mail, Burnley are eyeing a move for KAA Gent left-back Archie Brown, who has also attracted the interest of Leeds United, Everton and clubs in both the Bundesliga and Serie A in what could be a tough battle for his signature. If Burnley want to sign the former Derby County left-back, however, they may have to wait until the summer, with Gent reportedly set to keep hold of their player until the end of the season at the very least.

Kompany could finally replace Maatsen with Archie Brown

Since the end of Ian Maatsen's loan spell at the club, Burnley have struggled to replicate the left-back's work within their back four, with Charlie Taylor failing to replace the current Chelsea man. The arrival of Brown would finally solve that problem for Kompany, however. Here's how Brown's stats compare to Taylor and Maatsen:

Looking at the numbers, the Gent man wouldn't just finally fill the void left by Maatsen, but he'd potentially do an even better job. Brown's versatility would also hand Kompany a major boost, given that he can play left-back, centre-back and left-midfield. So, when the January transfer window swings open, before the summer hands clubs another attempt, the left-footed Brown certainly looks like one to keep an eye on.

Burnley may need improvements and Brown would be exactly that. At 22 years of age, the Englishman also fits in with the club's apparent transfer tactic of signing stars for the future. Every way you look at it, Burnley could pursue the fullback's signature sooner rather than later, making this one to watch.

ECB to 'redouble efforts' to educate players after court cases cause sponsor concern

Chief executive admits that cricket’s reputation has been damaged by recent high-profile cases

Andrew Miller14-Jan-2019Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, has said “efforts will be redoubled” to educate players in England and Wales about the consequences of their off-field actions, after admitting that the sport had been damaged in the eyes of its sponsors by two high-profile court cases.Harrison, speaking at Millbank during a day of meetings to finalise the ECB’s strategy for 2020-24, acknowledged that cricket’s attempts to foster a more inclusive, family-friendly vibe had been hit by the trials of Ben Stokes, who was found not guilty of affray in August, and Alex Hepburn, who may yet face a retrial after the jury at Worcester Crown Court failed to return a verdict on two counts of rape last week.As a consequence of the Hepburn case, two further Worcestershire cricketers, Joe Clarke and Tom Kohler-Cadmore, were stood down from this month’s England Lions tour of India, after details emerged in court of their use of the messaging service WhatsApp to keep a tally of their sexual conquests.Harrison added that it was the board’s duty to make extra efforts to improve player education, for the benefit of the players themselves but also for the financial wellbeing of the sport.”The reason why commercial partners get involved is because the culture beneath your game is something that attracts them,” he said. “What cricket means to people beyond the performance of England or the county teams is this underlying sense of decency and team spirit, and that is hugely important, so we take it very seriously.”We work very closely with partners on all matters, not just matters of culture,” he added. “Clearly there’s concern out there with commercial partners about some of the stories, but we work hard to explain what we are doing to address some of these societal trends that are coming into the game, or have been in there for a time and are now coming to the surface.”The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) has already made efforts to educate its young players about sexual consent, through the use of workshops for their Lions and Under-19s players, and there are plans afoot for such sessions to become standard in their pre-season briefings.”We work closely with the PCA but it’s our responsibility as a governing body to get on the front foot and address these issues,” Harrison said, “whether they are about problem gambling, drink, consent, or recreational drug use.”Whatever it is, these are issues pervading society now in a way that they didn’t 25 years ago. We are working very closely with experts in the field to get messages across, but it’s also a matter for each dressing room to take very seriously. Those messages have to be renewed and updated to make sure these matters are tackled.”

Everton have a talent out on loan who’s now outperforming Beto this season

Everton haven't needed to rely on their strikers this season to pick up victories this season so far in the Premier League, defenders even getting amongst the goals last time out versus Crystal Palace as left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko opened the scoring in the 3-2 victory at Selhurst Park.

The game-deciding strike saw another unexpected hero rise to the occasion, holding midfielder Idrissa Gueye scoring the winner with three minutes remaining on the clock after being found by midfield teammate Abdoulaye Doucoure in space.

It's not to say Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn't led the line effectively up top for Sean Dyche's men in glimpses this campaign – scoring four goals in all competitions from 11 appearances – but the Blues aren't heavily reliant on a superstar striker akin to Romelu Lukaku who was deadly in a Blues strip during his four-season stay.

Dyche will still be disappointed that his new £25.75m man in Beto has struggled up top however, with Neal Maupay – who was loaned back out to former club Brentford for a mini-reunion with the Bees in September – also now outperforming the misfiring summer signing in West London.

Beto's statistics for Everton so far

The 6 foot 4 attacker joined the Blues with hype attached to the purchase, the 25-year-old seeing out his Udinese career in a rich vein of goalscoring form.

In his final full season with the White and Blacks, the imposing striker would manage ten goals from 33 Serie A appearances.

beto-everton-dominic-calvert-lewin-dyche-dwight-mcneil-injury-premier-league

He hasn't quite recaptured this knack for finishing off chances expertly in Italy with his new employers in England however, only scoring once so far for the Toffees in the EFL Cup with zero goals to his name in the cut and thrust of the Premier League.

Beto did put in a promising cameo against Crystal Palace off the bench this weekend in the top-flight, his towering presence useful with the Blues battling to keep ahold of the three points deep into the game – Everton's number 14 winning three aerial duels from only 13 minutes on the pitch, as per Sofascore.

Dyche will hope that his summer signing can find his shooting boots soon though, with Maupay exposing Beto's ineffective nature in front of goal playing under Thomas Frank away from the Toffees.

Neal Maupay's statistics for Brentford so far

The Frenchman endured a torrid time at Goodison Park before relocating back to Brentford on a short-term deal, Maupay signing on the dotted line at Everton with hopes he'd be a prolific striker but his time with the Blues has not gone to plan whatsoever.

Maupay has only managed one goal in total for the Merseysiders, leading to Dyche sending the 27-year-old away from the club to regain his confidence and return back to Goodison hopefully as a transformed beast altogether.

The impotent £50k-per-week striker with the Blues has managed to turn around his goalscoring fortunes with the Bees, scoring once and assisting a further two goals in Premier League action this season which puts him ahead of Beto for top-flight goal contributions.

Maupay is in the midst of a recent purple patch for his side, the 27-year-old's one solitary loan strike coming against West Ham in the Bees' last home encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium – heading in a mis-hit strike turned ingenious assist from teammate Frank Onyeka to open the scoring, Frank's men winning 3-2 come full-time.

Dyche will be demanding more from Beto, Everton not wanting to have another striker dud on their hands. However, in the example of loaned-out striker Maupay, misfiring strikers can just get back into their stride randomly and so he'll hope Beto can do the same and show why the Toffees decided to splash big cash to secure his signature in the transfer window.

Powar not given extension as coach after Mithali controversy

In the aftermath of the controversial omission of senior Indian player Mithali Raj in the Women’s World T20 semi-final, the BCCI is looking for a new head coach, in effect choosing to not extend the tenure of interim coach Ramesh Powar, which began in September and ran till the World T20.

Eligibility criteria to become the next India women’s coach

  • Needs to be a Level C qualified coach

  • Should have played international cricket, or
Coached an international team for at least one year, or
Coached in a T20 tournament for two seasons, or

  • Played at least 50 first-class matches

As per the terms of the contract, Powar, upon favourable evaluation by the BCCI, was eligible for a 12-month extension as head coach. The BCCI, however, has now opted to restart the entire process. The new coach – India’s third in 2018 – is likely to take charge in time for the ODI series in New Zealand in January. This comes at the end of a week when Indian women’s cricket became a soap opera. On Wednesday, Powar submitted his report on India’s performance at the World T20, in which he hit out strongly against Raj, who he said had threatened to pull out of the tournament if not allowed to open the batting.Raj, India’s most experienced player, had been excluded from their last two matches, including the semi-final. That decision was taken by the team management, which comprises Powar, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana. However, Raj sent a letter to the BCCI CEO Rahul Johri and Saba Karim, head of women’s cricket, singling Powar out and saying he was trying to destroy her career. She also took offence to Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji’s comments saying the CoA would not intervene in matters of team selection. It remains to be seen whether Powar, a former India and Mumbai player, will apply to be the full-time coach. Even when he was appointed on a temporary basis, he had been trying to get the job of spin bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy. However, he was told by the BCCI to supervise a women’s training camp at the NCA and kept doing so until he signed a formal contract in September to be the head coach. The contract expired on Thursday. It is not clear whether the decision to appoint a fresh set of coaches came from the senior group of players, including Raj, Kaur and Mandhana. In any case, both the CoA and the BCCI’s professional management agree that a long-term plan and vision would serve women’s cricket better. It is learnt that the CoA wants the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, to interview prospective candidates. In case the CAC members are unavailable, a set of reputable senior cricketers will be picked to carry out the interviews. The last date for application is December 14, with the interviews scheduled for December 20.

Hope ties game against India with last-ball boundary

The Report by Sidharth Monga24-Oct-20182:33

Why Kohli’s journey to 10,000 is special

This will hurt more than their three previous one-sided defeats. Shimron Hetmyer’s sensational hitting and Shai Hope’s near run-a-ball unbeaten hundred brought West Indies awfully close to their highest successful chase in ODIs, but they contrived to somehow fall behind and then hit a last-ball four to come away with a tie. When they lost Rovman Powell in the 38th over, West Indies needed just 69 at well under a-run-a-ball, but somehow failed to punish a spate of full tosses bowled with the wet ball and needed 14 off the last over.Relieved was Virat Kohli, who had earlier almost single-handedly carried India to 321 with a century that took him past 10,000 ODI runs in record time. However, he will also be revisiting his decision at the toss, batting first despite knowing the dew in the evening would restrict their three spinners significantly. Kohli scored 157 of the 281 runs that came when he was at the wicket. The final flourish from Kohli – 48 off the last 17 balls he faced – seemed bonus runs given the slow nature of the pitch, but soon it was apparent that India needed every last one of those. In typical scenes at an Indian ground, mild applause drowned in deafening funereal silence as Hetmyer first and Hope later stunned India in dewy conditions. It is usually hard to hear yourself think at an Indian ground except when India are at receiving end of an onslaught by a visiting batsman. Hetmyer seemed like he wanted to find out how quiet Vizag can be. He hit seven sixes in his 64-ball 94, got out trying to hit an eighth, but the more subdued Hope stayed back to make sure West Indies remained the favourites till the end.The ball was wet, it skidded off the pitch, and spin was meat and drink for Hetmyer. Before that, Kuldeep had shown his party tricks to reduce West Indies to 78 for 3. Stock ball, stock ball, wrong’un, and it was enough to send back Chandrapul Hemraj and Marlon Samuels. But now the dew began to have an effect, and Hetmyer amplified it by putting the spinners under extreme pressure. All his seven sixes came against spin and into the leg side. Eventually Yuzvendra Chahal managed to start a long hop so wide that pulling instead of cutting proved to be a fatal error. Still, that partnership of 143 in under 20 overs had put West Indies well on their way.Hope and Rovman continued to bat sensibly, happy with the odd boundary, keeping the asking rate under a-run-a-ball. Kuldeep, though, returned to get Rovman with another wrong’un, a panicked attempt to keep the ball out after reading it off the surface. India had no choice at that time but to have a slip in, where Rohit Sharma completed a sitter.Jason Holder and Hope then batted cautiously – some might say too cautiously – to see through the spin threat. The asking rate gradually began to go up as India got in a spell of 50 balls without a boundary. With 52 required off 39, Hope broke the shackles, hitting Kuldeep for a six over wide long-on, and just like that the game was back in West Indies’ control. When Hope brought up his hundred, West Indies needed just 34 off 29, but then came an Umesh Yadav over where Hope hit one plum half-volley and two even juicier full tosses straight to the infielders.Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope shared a 143-run stand for the fourth wicket•Associated PressPanic only set in next over when he sold Holder down the river although Holder will be the first one to admit he could have done better than 12 off 23 at that stage. West Indies should still have finished the game off with 22 required off 16, but Mohammed Shami bowled a fantastic 49th over to leave Umesh 13 to defend in the last.Umesh began well with yorkers, was unlucky in conceding four leg-byes, but when he erred big time with a full toss, Ashley Nurse had already premeditated a ramp shot. The ball was wide so Nurse’s only option now was a reverse ramp, and India’s third man was fine to complete the catch. Seven runs were now required off two balls. Hope dug the first one – a yorker – out for two, and could get only four off a wide half-volley last ball.India players wore the look of a side that had dodged a bullet. They had banked on the pitch deteriorating in its due course even if the dew affected the outfield, but were surprised by how good it was to bat on in the evening. They should know. When they were batting, West Indies went to spin as early as the Powerplay, and drew instant results too. Nurse removed Shikhar Dhawan to reduce India to 40 for 2 in the ninth over.It was here that Kohli and the newly crowned No. 4 Ambati Rayudu added 139 for the third wicket. While Kohli took one early risk before settling into an efficient typical Kohli innings, Rayudu kept driving between mid-off and cover, hitting five of his eight boundaries in that zone. Rayudu did take the extra risks, though, and that got him out in the 70s.Kohli continued to bat the way he does even as both MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant – incumbent and successor – failed to convert their good starts. Only 69 came in those 67 balls that Dhoni and Pant were at the wicket. However, in the company of Dhoni, a captain Kohli reveres, he took that single to reach 10,000 runs in 54 innings fewer than the previous record, held by Sachin Tendulkar, a batsman Kohli reveres. However, it was his hitting in the end, having exhausted himself running 62 of the first 102 runs he scored in the humidity of India’s east coast, that Kohli made the vital difference to the game. All four of his sixes came in the last four overs as he showed he can hit the big ones too but chooses not to in the earlier parts of his innings. This is a spell of play that Holder will look back with regret at: he had dropped Kohli on 44, running back from mid-off after debutant Obed McCoy had done Kohli in with a back-of-the-hand slower ball.

Player’s agent says he has connections with interested parties at Newcastle

Newcastle United have once again impressed so far this season to further establish themselves as a permanent member of the Premier League's top six. The Magpies' best outing came against Paris Saint-Germain as they brushed the French champions aside in a stunning 4-1 victory at St James' Park, and Eddie Howe will be aware that his side's best form is yet to come after a couple of frustrating results in the last week.

Perhaps the secret to discovering that top form is in the transfer market, where Newcastle could return to land one particular defensive target to bolster Howe's options, according to reports.

Newcastle United transfer news

Newcastle are no strangers to spending big these days as one of the richest clubs in the world. To their credit, though, they've often spent wisely rather than aimlessly throwing their new-found riches around the market. They've welcomed the likes of Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman in deals that quickly proved to be shrewd pieces of business.

When the January transfer window opens, they could return to the market, and that could result in a deal to sign another defender for Howe. Agent Florin Manea, told the Fanatik Superliga show that he has spoken to Newcastle about a deal for Radu Dragusin. He also revealed his connection with higher-ups on Tyneside, presumably Dan Ashworth and CEO Darren Eales, who both worked at West Brom in that time period he referenced.

Menea said: "Genoa don't want to give him now, but in the summer they do. If they get the price they want on it, you realize it's a lot of money. Genoa wants 30 million, they said bluntly. We had a team that wanted to give 25, well it wasn't on paper, but…

"I don't think there is anyone in Italy who would give this sum of 30 million. I've talked about the Premier League, I've talked about Newcastle, but it's not just them, it's several teams I'm talking to.

"The president with whom I made Tamaş (Gabriel Tamaş) at West Brom is now at Newcastle. We've known each other since 2009. They follow him, but also other big clubs in England. There is no official offer yet, but it is coming. It will be a pleasant surprise when he arrives."

Dragusin is "dominant" and better on the ball than Botman

Genoa defender Radu Dragusin.

Dragusin's stats show exactly why Newcastle are interested in landing the defender. The Genoa man, when compared to Howe's current options at the back, has kept up well, as per FBref, particularly outshining the great Sven Botman on the posession-based metrics.

The central defender has been at the centre of praise as a result of his performances, too, including from Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, who described Dragusin as "dominant" and his strengths as "tackling, athleticism, positioning, heading, passing, anticipation".

With that said, although it remains to be seen whether Newcastle push on and eventually secure a deal for the Genoa man, Dragusin is certainly showing plenty of signs that he has the ability to step straight into life in the Premier League.
