Nearly a year into the Messi era, Inter Miami continue to soar to new heights. The team has reached significant milestones, both in sporting achievements and commercial success and at the 2024 Sports Business Journal Awards in New York, Inter Miami outshone three reigning major sports champions, including the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, MLB's Texas Rangers, NHL's Vegas Golden Knights, and the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, to win Team of the Year, while Messi's signing was celebrated with the Deal of the Year award.

Messi's arrival came just months after he led Argentina to a historic World Cup victory, making his move to South Florida one of the most high-profile transfers in football history. The impact of Messi's presence was felt almost immediately, as he guided a previously struggling Inter Miami team to the Leagues Cup title within weeks of his debut. On the field, Messi proved to be a game-changer, but his influence extended far beyond his performance during matches.

49ers eyeing Leeds transfer move to sign in-demand left-back Archie Brown

Now 10 points adrift of the automatic promotion place, Leeds United may well have no choice but to turn their attention towards winning the play-offs if they want to secure promotion out of the Championship at the first time of asking under Daniel Farke. With the January transfer window fast approaching too, the Whites could look to make some crucial additions for the former Norwich City boss, who was already backed with a number of arrivals during the summer.

Reports suggest that those at Elland Road are eyeing a move to beat some Premier League sides to one particular reinforcement for Farke, be it either in January or next summer when Leeds could be preparing for a return to the top flight.

Leeds transfer news

Defeat at Sunderland last time out may have sent some timely reminders about the problems that Leeds still face, despite sitting third in the Championship. And whilst they did well to recruit the likes of Joel Piroe in the summer after losing Rodrigo, Tyler Adams and others, the Whites are still likely to turn to the transfer window for added additions in the next two transfer windows. Among those potentially arriving could yet be a new left-back for the 49ers Enterprises and Farke, with ongoing injuries to Juniro Firpo and Sam Byram.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

According to The Daily Mail, Leeds United are monitoring Gent left-back Archie Brown ahead of a possible move. The young fullback has impressed in Belgium and has become a player in demand. Alongside the Whites, both Burnley, Everton and clubs in the Bundesliga and Serie A, are also keen.

Having previously played for Derby County, Brown could now get a return to English football, albeit likely next summer with Gent reportedly set to keep hold of their man until at least the end of the current campaign. Given the number of clubs interested in his signature, Leeds may have to act quickly if they are to beat the likes of Everton and Burnley in the transfer market.

Brown could be a permanent fix for Leeds and Farke

It's clear that Farke could do with a permanent option down the left-hand side after using right-back Djed Spence on the left against Sunderland in the week. The boss has handed the role to Byram for the majority of the campaign, but Byram's injury history isn't exactly reliable, either given that he missed 40 games during the 2019/20 campaign. Looking for a permanent solution, here's how Brown's stats compare to Spence and Byram:

Whether Leeds decide to pursue the 21-year-old's signature in January remains to be seen, but with promotion the aim, they could certainly do with a player of Brown's ability. His progressive carries could particularly hand Farke a boost down the left-hand side and perhaps even help add to the goals of Piroe and co throughout the campaign. The Gent man is one to keep an eye on in the next two windows.

Kurtis Patterson's golden season continues as NSW build big lead

Australia Test incumbent Kurtis Patterson continued his sparkling form with yet another century while New South Wales captain Peter Nevill made his first hundred in two years to put the Blues in complete control of the clash with Western Australia at Bankstown Oval in Sydney.Patterson made 134 from 229 balls with 15 fours and two sixes as the Blues piled up 8 for 477 declared. He has now made six centuries in his last 11 innings at all levels dating back to his Shield century against Western Australia in Perth in early December. The span includes two centuries for New South Wales, two for the Cricket Australia XI, a Test century for Australia and a grade century for his club side St George in Sydney.Nevill piled on the pain in the afternoon reaching his 10th first-class century and his first in two years before swiftly declaring with a lead of 198. Steve O’Keefe also added 57 in a partnership of 125 with his captain.WA debutant legspinner Liam O’Connor took five wickets in a tireless effort. He bowled Jack Edwards through the gate with another superb wrong ‘un, and took the last three wickets to fall to finish with 5 for 131 from 38 overs, as the Warriors could only manage eight wickets in 150 overs of toil.WA’s task to save the game on the final day was made even tougher when they lost Sam Whiteman just before close. He edged a ball to the gully off Sean Abbott driving away from his body with Patterson clinging onto the sharp chance. Cameron Bancroft and Josh Inglis survived to stumps but WA still need 185 runs to make New South Wales bat again, or to bat most of day four to avoid defeat.

Mathews, Gunathilaka, Mendis among runs in drawn encounter

Danushka Gunathilaka found form with a dominant display at the top of the order, while Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis were also among the runs, as the three-day warm-up match against New Zealand XI petered to a draw in Napier.Gunathilaka’s rapid second innings 77-ball 83, inclusive of 12 boundaries and a six, was a timely knock for a player looking to regain the trust of the SLC leadership, after having been suspended twice over the last year for violating team curfew and protocols. In his absence, Sri Lanka have struggled to find a partner for newly-appointed vice captain Dimuth Karunaratne at the top of the order, and they will now be hopeful that the left-hander can nail down a permanent spot – provided he steers clear of any further disciplinary issues.Gunathilaka’s return to the national fold however only addresses part of Sri Lanka’s batting woes, as their all too common tendency to lose wickets in batches was on full display early on in the match, even against what was essentially a developmental New Zealand outfit.Gunathilaka was among five Sri Lankan batsmen to be dismissed for ducks on the opening day, as the visitors slumped to 88-8, before an unbeaten 128 off 177 balls from Angelo Mathews bailed them out, as Sri Lanka limped to 210 for 9 before declaring.Sri Lanka’s bowlers meanwhile got a good time out as the home side played out 82 overs and declared on 270/8 in their response. The Lankan seam quartet of Kasun Rajitha, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, and Dushmantha Chameera, unsurprisingly, shouldered a majority of the workload, ahead of what is likely to be a much greener surface at the Basin Reserve during Saturday’s first Test. While the quicks made early inroads, they largely toiled in vain over the course of the game, picking up just the five wickets among them in the match. Spinners Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan meanwhile picked up two wickets apiece, while Mathews bowled three tidy overs of seam, which bodes well for a side lacking any true allrounders. In their second stint in the middle Sri Lanka’s batsmen performed much better, as, alongside Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis made an unbeaten 105-ball 72 before retiring, while the returning Lahiru Thirimanne also made a steady 45 in a 116-run opening stand. The runs for Mendis in particular will be heartening for Sri Lanka as he, along with Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, will likely make the core of Sri Lanka’s middle order.Sri Lanka eventually declared their second innings on 321 for 5 and set a target of 262. The home side were on 139/2 before both sides agreed to call off play on the final day midway through the 29th over.

Heazlett, Neser rearguard deny South Australia outright points

Travis Head called time early, after the Bulls pair steadied the ship and scored freely enough to build a lead that the Redbacks then needed to chase down for victory

Sam Heazlett and Michael Neser followed the example set by Australia’s batsmen in the drawn Dubai Test with a Queensland rearguard that denied South Australia outright points on the final day of the Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval. When sometime Australian ODI batsman Heazlett was joined by the UAE tourist Neser, the Bulls still trailed by nine runs overall, with more than 40 overs left in the day and the second new ball only 14 overs old. However, the Bulls pair were able to right the ship as SA made increasingly desperate efforts to dislodge them, at the same time scoring freely enough to build a lead that the Redbacks then needed to chase down for victory. Ultimately that pursuit did not eventuate, with SA’s captain Travis Head calling time early. It was a significant innings for Heazlett, long thought to be a player of strong potential, while also a reminder of Neser’s ability to contribute wherever he can to a team’s cause. By contrast, the teenage wrist spinner Lloyd Pope was frustrated after his first-day heroics, ending the innings wicketless in 34 overs.Chadd Sayers and Joe Mennie, the SA seamers who have each played one Test for Australia, provided the primary threat for the hosts, sharing the wickets of Charlie Hemphrey, Jack Wildermuth – shouldering arms to Sayers’ first delivery with the second new ball – and Jimmy Peirson before Heazlett and Neser joined forces.

Cheteshwar Pujara lauded for his mental strength, but India rue 'soft' dismissals

Being left out of the first Test and run out in the second didn’t make it an ideal start to the series for Pujara but he has since shown his value

Compton: Pujara reaps rewards of Yorkshire stint

Balance and footwork were underlined as the two areas that Cheteshwar Pujara had to work on at the outset of the five-Test series.Pujara, who was benched for the first Test at Edgbaston, had been included in the Test squad despite struggling for Yorkshire with an average of 14. But the India coaches lead by Ravi Shastri and Sanjay Bangar recognised Pujara, with a little bit of work on his technique, could once again become an effective Test batsman and a catalyst in setting up victories.Pujara has vindicated the team management’s faith and is now after he became the second India batsman to record a century in the series after his captain Virat Kohli. Pujara also played an integral role in India’s win at Trent Bridge with half century in the second innings. Yet it was not all so rosy at the beginning. Not included for the first Test, Pujara was involved in an embarrassing run-out at Lord’s in the first innings having made 1 off 25 balls. However, Pujara continued to work on his technique and brought all his strengths to the fore to push a resurgent England bowling attack back and record his first century in England in two visits.”He was coming off a rough patch and also he hadn’t really scored as many runs as he’d have liked in the last 10-11 innings for India,” Bangar said. “He was struggling a bit when he joined the team but you cannot really make decisions based on how one does in the first-class format because he’s a proven international player. Obviously, certain areas had to be worked on. He had to get his balance right and he also had to get his footwork right. Those were the two areas we worked on as a support-staff group – including Ravi and myself.”Along with “composure, clarity of thought and great discipline in his judgement outside off,” what also stood out for Bangar was how Pujara mixed “caution and aggression” to construct his innings. “Talent can not only be seen in class, but also in a strong will,” Bangar said. “He showed mental strength, patience and the concentration today. If you have all those characteristics then you can show that, even if you have some limitations in terms of scoring areas or not possessing all the strokes, then you can become an effective Test player.”Bangar admitted the same could not be said about some of the lower-order batsmen, who he acknowledged played recklessly. The two he singled out were the allrounders pairing of Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin, who Bangar said provided “soft” dismissals.”Hardik really wasn’t on top of the ball while driving and Ashwin attempted that reverse sweep at a pretty early stage in his innings. If he was set and batting with the tail, one could have thought that shot was on.”India’s problems had been compounded when Pujara lost Rishabh Pant at the stroke of tea. Having marked his first Test runs with a six at Trent Bridge, Pant was numbingly quiet this time, scoring a 29-ball duck to equal the India record. Bangar said Pant was given no “directions” over how to go about his innings, he just did not get “scoreable” balls as the England bowlers pitched on difficult lengths for him to play with freedom.”Rishabh didn’t get any loose deliveries till he got out. He was being tested outside off by the seamers, who kept on bowling those lengths and lines. There was no clear direction to him that he should bat in a particular fashion. We encourage batters to bat in their individual style and make their own choices.”
