Ashwin presides over England's latest trial by spin

England ended the second day in Visakhapatnam tottering on 103 for 5 in reply to India’s 455 after falling prey to India’s trio of spinners

Compton: It’s a shame for England that Root isn’t unbeaten overnight

At every critical juncture of this typically subcontinental Test match, England’s cricketers have inadvertently been telegraphing their sense of impending doom. It was visible in Alastair Cook’s body language after losing a vital toss; it resurfaced on the first afternoon when Virat Kohli was dropped at fine leg by Adil Rashid, and there were tremors again this morning, when Moeen Ali’s offbreaks began to find the purchase necessary to check India’s innings before it could run away. But it wasn’t until the second afternoon at Visakhapatnam that their deep-seated pessimism began gushing to the surface like an Andhra Pradesh oil strike. By the close of a gripping and debilitating third session, with India’s trio of spinners tormenting both sides of a succession of stick-or-twist blades, the destiny of this contest was all but pre-ordained.England limped to the close on 103 for 5, in reply to India’s 455, having contributed massively to their own downfall with a succession of hare-brained departures, but equally, having had their minds and techniques scrambled by the dripping-tap accuracy of, in particular, the offspinners R Ashwin and debutant Jayant Yadav.Ravindra Jadeja’s left-arm spin played its part as well, darting the ball in flat and fast to challenge the front pad and leave England’s batsmen no time to gather their thoughts between deliveries. But it was Ashwin who applied the surgical strikes, his 12 overs yielding 15 runs and two wickets, including the crowning scalp of Joe Root for 53 and the hapless Ben Duckett for 5.Meanwhile Jayant, shrewdly handed a debut in response to England’s selection of a record seven left-handers, showcased a tall and tidy technique, and accounted of one of that number as his maiden Test wicket. Moeen Ali, one of England’s four centurions at Rajkot, was struck on the shin as he pressed forward to another wicket-to-wicket delivery, and sent on his way lbw for 1 after Virat Kohli made a correct call for the DRS.Soon afterwards, Jayant should have had a second when he bounced an offbreak off the top of Ben Stokes’ off stump and into the keeper’s gloves without dislodging it. It was a memorably bizarre footnote to a fine first day of Test action from the new boy, that had earlier included a key role – once again in tandem with Ashwin – in a 64-run stand for India’s eighth wicket, but was perhaps most notable for the athletic slide and throw from deep square leg that ran out Haseeb Hameed for 13 and wrecked what little poise England’s innings had managed to generate. It hadn’t looked too promising in the early moments of England’s innings either, and Cook in particular had lived dangerously in his 11-ball stay. He all but popped a leading edge back to the bowler in Mohammad Shami’s opening over, but could do nothing about the beauty that bowled him in his second. After being lined up by two deliveries that curled away to the slips, Cook was beaten by a sensational nipbacker that smashed the off stump in two as it nipped back through the gate.R Ashwin is stoked after taking a wicket•AFP

But despite such a seismic shock to England’s system, there had been a glimmer of hope, in the form of a 47-run stand for the second wicket between Hameed and Root, that England might somehow extract enough runs from a still serviceable wicket to haul themselves close to first-innings parity. Root, in particular, had been responding impressively to the challenge of a skiddy low surface, and at one stage during a probing new-ball spell from India’s seamers had advanced on Shami to clip him aggressively through midwicket for four. But he was entirely culpable in the moment of madness that sold his younger partner down the river. Chivvying for the second run as he clipped Jadeja off the pads, he hurtled halfway down the track only to turn abruptly on his heels as Jayant’s throw fizzed in from the deep. Wriddhiman Saha did brilliantly in front of the stumps to gather and flick backwards in one moment, clipping the bails as Hameed tumbled for the crease in vain.At 51 for 2, the door was ajar and India’s spinners did not require a second invitation to bring out the battering ram. Duckett, whose stroke-laden technique had been an asset when counterattacking against Bangladesh, proved as a leaky as a fisherman’s net when facing the best spin bowler in the world, and having consistently exposed his stumps in a bid to attack Ashwin out of the rough, it was to nobody’s great surprise when they duly were splattered for 5.Two overs later, and Ashwin had the big one. Root had been playing a blinder in the circumstances, galvanised by his own supreme form and the knowledge of his role in Hameed’s demise. But, against Ashwin, even his free-scoring methods had been tempered, until Kohli tempted him fatally by removing his long-on and inviting a hoick over the top. He took the bait but failed to get to the pitch, and Umesh was on hand at long-off to cue India’s delirium. The familiar failings with the bat made England’s determined efforts with the ball earlier in the day somewhat redundant. Moeen, who had been underused on the opening day of the match, claimed three quick wickets in the second hour of the morning before Rashid and Stokes mopped up the resistance after lunch.Ashwin, India’s main source of runs on the day, was lucky to benefit from a drop at slip by Stokes when he had made 17, but the unlikely let-off had a spin-off benefit for England. India ran a single as the ball ricocheted off Stokes’ knee at slip, and one ball later, Stokes made amends by snaffling a faster, lower edge to his right to see off India’s main man, Kohli, for 167 instead.Kohli’s early dismissal enabled England to keep India’s innings closer to 450 than 550, but by the close, in spite of a spirited 15-overs of resistance from Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, it was looking like more than enough.

Ex-Celtic man shares Postecoglou insight

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has shared some interesting insight on Ange Postecoglou.

The Lowdown: O’Dea comments

Speaking to Off the Ball last week, Celtic B team coach Darren O’Dea said that Postecoglou acts more like a ‘director of football’ at Parkhead, rather than just a manager.

He added that everything at the club goes through the Australian, but the bosses still retain a lot of autonomy.

Postecoglou is seemingly ‘sticking his neck on the line’, and ‘believes in what he does’, according to O’Dea.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has shared that Postecoglou speaks to his agent to tell him the players that he wants to sign, and they go and speak to them, claiming that it is ‘crucial’ that he plays a wider role at the Hoops aside from his manager job:

I think it’s crucial.

He knows who he brings in will determine if he stays or not. Nobody’s infallible. When they’re playing terribly it falls on the manager. It’s only right that he should buy the players and he gets the blame if they don’t perform well, he’ll get the blame even if it’s not him.

What I’ve been told is that he speaks to his agent and tells him who he wants and the agent goes and speaks to whoever. It’s great that he can do that. People still fly all over the world to go and watch players, you’ve still got to go and watch them.

He’s bringing in players and they’re fitting into the changing room, they’re all getting on great. There’s nobody in there that’s a bad apple, anybody that’s wanting to leave will be allowed to leave. People that don’t want to be there will be out the door, Ange will let them leave.

The Verdict: Working

Postecoglou’s increased role at the club does seem to be working for all parties at this moment in time.

The Hoops currently sit two points clear at the top of the table in the Scottish Premiership, after wrestling the title back off of the hands of their bitter rivals Rangers last season.

In terms of recruitment, Postecoglou has been allowed to bring in the likes of Jota and Daizen Maeda, who performed so well for him on loan that the club have now signed the pair on permanent deals.

Nonetheless, it was not a surprise to see him linked with the Brighton and Hove Albion job in the Premier League, and so the Bhoys will do well to keep him over the next few campaigns.

Southampton must unleash Dom Ballard

Southampton have always had a fine academy and have produced some of the world’s best talents over the years.

The current Premier League all-time top scorer in Alan Shearer came through their ranks, as did two-time PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale.

But in this new youngster, they might just have their next superstar if he can be nurtured to perfection.

Dominic Ballard is a 17-year-old marksman who has scored goals for fun in all stages of their youth setups and despite his age, he could come in and replicate the form of Danny Ings, who was a dependable goal scorer at St Mary’s over a four-year spell.

46 goals and ten assists in 100 games for the Saints is a fine return, especially for a side that flirted with relegation at times during his tenure.

If Ballard can take to senior Premier League football as he has done with the Premier League 2, then he is destined for greatness.

Having scored 15 goals and given four assists in 19 appearances in the under-18s division, he was quickly deemed in need of a tougher challenge.

Now that supposed challenge is facing the teenager, he once again seems to be making light work of it.

Eight appearances in the Premier League 2 last season littered throughout the season brought a fine return of five goals and has earned him a starting place for this current season.

His form has not relented.

Five goals in five games this season in that division earned him his senior debut, where he yet again scored. His goal on the 88th minute capped off what has been a remarkable rise to the top, and earned huge plaudits from Ralph Hasenhuttl:

“Absolutely, he likes to score goals” he claimed.

“He is there, he wants to enter the box and score goals and this is exactly what we like to see from him. He is absolutely a positive mentality player, he enjoys what he does, he invests a lot and this is good to see.”

With a goal-scoring record worthy of replacing Ings, perhaps Ballard could finally answer the striking prayers of Saints fans.

Last season, Armando Broja acted as a temporary fix up front but for a long-term solution, Ballard could well be their man.

Journalist provides key Wolves update

Arsenal’s interest in Wolves winger Pedro Neto ‘is real’, the reliable Steve Madeley has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Neto linked with move away

The Portuguese maestro is one of the most exciting players at Molineux, providing huge quality down the flanks when fully fit and firing, registering 23 goal involvements (11 goals and 12 assists) in total for Wanderers.

Unfortunately, Neto has been linked with a summer move to Arsenal in recent times, with Mikel Arteta perhaps seeing him as the final piece of the puzzle after their red-hot start to the season.

Bruno Lage’s side are already seriously lacking in attacking firepower, so to lose their up and coming superstar would be an enormous blow.

The Latest: Madeley confirms interest

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, The Athletic‘s Madeley confirmed that Arsenal want Neto but did add that they may not be able to sign him this summer:

“Arsenal’s interest in Pedro Neto is real and understandable. But it’s hard to see how they get him in this window.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“398117″]

The Verdict: Big loss if it happens…

Neto would be a huge loss for Wolves, with Premier League legend Alan Shearer describing him as a ‘huge talent’ and Lage surely desperate to keep hold of him.

[freshpress-poll id=“399044″]

Goals are already coming at a premium for Wanderers, with only one scored in the league this season, so losing one of their biggest attacking threats is far from ideal.

Should Neto end up leaving this summer, it is essential that the funds are used to replace him immediately – if not, it is hard to see Wolves threatening the European places or even the top ten.

Spurs: Jones drops Kudus claim

Dean Jones has dropped a claim concerning reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Mohammed Kudus.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider revealed that, following a recent report by GhanaWeb suggesting that Fabio Paratici and his Tottenham transfer team have been monitoring the forward-thinking Ajax midfielder over the past six months, the Italian sporting director is targeting a player in the 22-year-old’s mould this summer.

Jones went on to claim that, while reports have also linked Antonio Conte’s side with a £60m move for Leicester City talent James Maddison in recent weeks, the Ghana international would more than likely be available for a much more palatable price than the England international.

Regarding Spurs’ reported interest in Kudus, the journalist said: “I do believe that it’s potentially a position that they are looking to add even more depth to. And the signs are, I think, that he actually might be available at a much better fee than you would get someone like James Maddison at, so we’ll have to watch this space.”

“Incredible”

While it is undeniable that Maddison would make a fantastic addition to Conte’s first-team squad this summer, considering just how much the 25-year-old would set Spurs back, coupled with how talented a prospect Kudus quite clearly is, there is an argument to be made that the Ajax starlet could well be a perfect alternative to the £45m-rated Foxes star.

Indeed, following his €9m (£7.5m) move to the Johan Cruijff ArenA back in the summer of 2020, the £9m-rated midfielder burst onto the scene over his 17 Eredivisie appearances in the 2020/21 campaign, scoring four goals and registering three assists, as well as taking an average of 1.2 shots, making 0.6 key passes and completing 1.7 dribbles per game.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-so-much-more” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

For context, although Kudus falls behind Maddison for shots and key passes, he is actually far more comfortable at beating his man, with the Leicester star managing just 0.9 dribbles per match last season. With that in mind, he could be a more dynamic alternative should Paratici submit a formal offer this summer.

The 22-year-old also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, completing an average of 29.7 passes – at a success rate of 91% – making 1.4 tackles, 0.4 interceptions and winning 4.3 duels per fixture.

As such, with it being evident that Kudus is something of an all-action midfielder, who is clinical in the final third, accurate with his passes and adept at breaking up play in the middle of the park, it is clear to see that the 22-year-old is an ideal fit for the mould of a central midfielder Conte likes to possess in his squad.

Furthermore, with the £14k-per-week Ghanaian who Erik ten Hag claimed has “incredible potential” and Owuraku Ampofo dubbed a “special” player being able to operate from defensive, central and attacking midfield, as well as on the right wing and up front, the former FC Nordsjaelland starlet’s versatility is yet another attribute that would appear to make him something of a dream match to Conte’s tactical setup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As such, while it is undeniable that the also versatile Maddison – who scored 18 goals and registered 12 assists over much better fee” than the Englishman’s £60m asking price, the 22-year-old could well prove to be a perfect alternative to the Foxes forward.

Saints interested in move for Levi Colwill

CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Southampton are interested in a move for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill this summer.

The Lowdown: Searching for a breakthrough

The 19-year-old is an academy product of the Blues, having worked his way up through the ranks at Stamford Bridge, but has never been able to make a successful breakthrough into Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad.

The centre-back spent last season out on loan at Huddersfield Town to aid his development further, and after an impressive spell at The John Smith’s Stadium, could now be on his way to the Premier League after catching the eye of potential suitors, in particular the Saints.

The Latest: Saints tracking Colwill

Taking to Twitter, Jacobs revealed that Southampton are monitoring Colwill, though he’s only currently open to a loan move. He wrote:

“My understanding with Levi Colwill is there is no shortage of interest. Southampton and Leicester both rate the 19-year-old. Colwill has not asked for a permanent move. He seeks clarity, though, of his long-term role and future at Chelsea. It’s similar to Armando Broja.”

The Verdict: Existing Chelsea connection

Southampton already have a history of signing exciting young talents from Chelsea having purchased Tino Livramento and brought in Armando Broja on loan last summer, so this existing connection between the two clubs could give the south coast side the advantage.

The 6 foot 1 gem was solid at the heart of the Terriers’ backline last season, averaging 4.3 clearances and 1.7 tackles per league game, along with 2.9 aerial wins, via WhoScored.

Even if it’s only on a temporary basis, the Chelsea starlet would be a fantastic addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s starting XI for the season ahead as the Austrian looks to guide his team towards a place in the top ten.

Nottingham Forest nearing Biancone signing

Nottingham Forest are reportedly closing in on the signing of Troyes defender Giulian Biancone, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The lowdown: Career so far

A product of the youth system at AS Monaco, the 22-year-old signed for Belgian outfit Cercle Brugge on loan twice before being sold to Troyes last August.

The France youth international enjoyed a superb campaign in Ligue 1 as Troyes finished 15th on their return to the French top flight.

It now appears as though a move to the Premier League could be the next step in a promising career for Biancone…

The latest: ‘Will join…’

Taking to Twitter, Talbot – a European football correspondent for numerous outlets – claimed on Saturday afternoon that the 22-year-old had passed his medical and was on the verge of completing a transfer to the City Ground.

He stated: “Exc: Told Giulian Biancone passed his medical an hour ago at Nottingham Forest and will join the side ahead of pre-season. Moussa Niakhaté will be done soon and there is confidence in Liverpool’s Neco Williams getting wrapped up as well. #NFFC”

Elsewhere on the deal for Biancone, The Athletic reported that the Reds will pay £5m for the versatile defender, who earned £3,200 per week at Troyes during 2022 (Salary Sport).

The verdict: Smart business

Holding a perceived market value of £3.6m and under contract until 2026 (Transfermarkt), signing the Frenchman for the aforementioned fee must to be regarded as a shrewd piece of business from the Forest hierarchy.

Last season, the former Monaco youngster earned an impressive 6.88 Sofascore rating whilst winning 4.9 duels and making 1.6 interceptions and two clearances per game, showcasing superb defensive attributes in the process.

Capable of operating as a central defender, in either full-back role and in more advanced wide positions, Biancone adds invaluable versatility to Steve Cooper’s squad as the Welshman plans for life managing in the Premier League.

West Ham: Brown drops En-Nesyri claim

West Ham United could renew their interest in Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri, having been heavily linked with the player over the past year or so.

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Paul Brown has suggested that the Hammers will still be keeping tabs on the 25-year-old amid their current striker search, although a sizeable offer appears unlikely due to the Moroccan’s recent dip in form.

The transfer insider stated: “I’m pretty sure he’s still on their radar. They had quite a big bid turned down for him at one point when it looked like he was their most likely option that window.

“Since then, his forms gone off a cliff a little bit. He hasn’t had a great season, and it would be a surprise if West Ham were to make a big bid for him now.”

The east Londoners are believed to be contemplating a move this summer having reportedly seen a £27m bid rejected in January – short of the Spanish side’s £40m valuation – with their interest stretching back to January 2021.

Moyes’ own Giroud

As Brown alluded to, the former Leganes man did endure a difficult last campaign in Spain, netting just five league goals and providing just one assist in 23 games for the La Liga outfit.

Prior to that, however, the 48-cap marksman had scored 24 goals in all competitions in what was a real standout campaign during the 2020/21 season, notably netting six times in just eight Champions League games for the Andalusian outfit.

That “prolific” form – as described by journalist Muhammad Butt – unsurprisingly caught the attention of those at the London Stadium, with the £45k-per-week man seemingly the figure who can finally end their centre-forward woes.

Despite reports that manager David Moyes will not break the bank for a new number nine, the continued void left by the departure of a newly-rejuvenated Sebastian Haller 18 months ago has placed for too great a burden on Michail Antonio, with extra competition seemingly vital ahead of next term.

The former Manchester United boss may potentially have doubts over En-Nesyri’s lack of Premier League experience, although according to FBref, the one-time Malaga man shares a number of stylistic and statistical similarities to a man who does – Olivier Giroud.

The current AC Milan hotshot spent nine years in English football prior to his move to Italy last summer, netting 144 goals and providing 55 assists in 372 games in all competitions across spells at London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, notably winning the FA Cup on four occasions during that time.

The 2018 World Cup winner – who is the second-top scorer for France at present with 48 goals in 112 caps – has dazzled with his repertoire of delightful finishes throughout his career, producing a catalogue of goals that would be the envy of anyone in Europe.

To potentially find a comparable figure in En-Nesyri – who is also left-footed like the veteran ace – will no doubt be a huge source of excitement to both Hammers supporters and the club itself, with the Irons seemingly in need of a lethal leading man who knows where the goal is.

Rangers transfer news on Berke Ozer

Glasgow Rangers have reportedly now made an offer to bring a Turkish goalkeeper to Ibrox on a free transfer this summer.

The Lowdown: Out of contract

Reports from Turkey have claimed that the Light Blues have taken the first big step towards trying to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks.

Berke Ozer is out of contract at Fenerbahce at the end of the month, meaning that he will become a free agent once it expires.

The 6 foot 3 goalkeeper played in 19 games across all competitions in 2021/22, including three appearances in the Europa League, and he kept five clean sheets in total (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Ozer transfer offer

As per Turkish outlet En Son Haber, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers have now made an offer to sign the 22-year-old, who has been confirmed to leave Fenerbahce after the end of his contract.

It was thought that he had already signed for Belgian club Anderlecht, but that is now not the case, with Portuguese giants Benfica also thought to be interested in his signature.

The Verdict: McGregor replacement?

The report claims that Ozer is ‘keen’ to join Rangers, as he could take over from Allan McGregor as the Teddy Bears’ new number one.

As per Sky Sports, the Light Blues have not opened talks over a new deal for the 40-year-old, whose contract also expires this summer.

Therefore, Ozer could be brought in as a like-for-like replacement for the Scottish veteran, and the Turk is much younger at 22, so he could establish himself as a mainstay at Ibrox for the next few years if he comes to Glasgow.

West Ham: Journalist shares Cornet transfer update

Journalists Toby Cudworth and Graeme Bailey of 90min have now shared a West Ham United transfer update involving Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet.

The Lowdown: Moyes steps up talks…

Hammers boss David Moyes is reportedly stepping up transfer talks as he plots a summer overhaul in east London, with the club recently confirming four exits (The Evening Standard).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-5/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that club owners GSB will back their manager who is reportedly keen on bringing in a striker, central midfielder and left-back ‘high on the agenda’ (The Evening Standard).

However, the Premier League side are also in contention to sign Clarets star Cornet as clubs take note due to a special clause in the player’s contract.

The Latest: 90min share update…

As per 90min, Moyes and West Ham are ‘eyeing a move’ for the Ivory Coast international who is seriously in demand – with Newcastle, Brighton, Everton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Fulham, Arsenal and Tottenham also mentioned.

Cornet has a £17.5m release clause written into his five-year contract which became active once the Turf Moor side were relegated – prompting this huge interest.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Scoring a career total of 61 goals, Man City boss Pep Guardiola was once left blown away by Cornet having been ‘very impressed’ by his performance for Lyon against the Sky Blues.

Finishing the 2021/2022 season as Burnley’s top goal scorer with nine in the top flight, was by far their most-threatening player and also attempted the most shots at goal per 90 on average (WhoScored).

The 25-year-old still has many years ahead of him at the top level and for just £17.5m it could be a very shrewd move, leaving little wonder West Ham have joined the race.
