James Pamment takes over as USA interim coach

James Pamment, the 51-year-old former Auckland batsman, has taken the role of USA head coach on an interim basis through to the end of 2019. This comes after the contracts of USA director of cricket Kiran More and a string of other assistant coaches were not renewed following an initial three-month period. Pamment’s appointment had been rumoured since the start of the month but has since been confirmed to ESPNcricinfo by multiple USA Cricket sources.More had been appointed in July by USA Cricket to oversee their quest to qualify for the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia, serving as a “senior operations consultant” according to a USA Cricket press release. But his arrival sparked a power struggle with USA head coach Pubudu Dassanayake, who had been in place since September 2016 and had led USA to ODI status in April at WCL Division Two. After mounting tension at a USA squad camp at Los Angeles in June, Dassanayake resigned, citing a “loss of freedom” in selection decisions.More did not to travel with the USA squad to Bermuda in August for the Americas Regional Final for the T20 World Cup Qualifier. Sunil Joshi was notified by email after the team arrived on tour that he would be the stand-in head coach in More’s place. Though USA headed into the four-team event as favourites after winning the sub-regional qualifier over Canada in North Carolina in September 2018, the team finished third after losing all four of their matches to Canada and Bermuda, who wound up advancing instead of USA to the T20 World Cup Qualifier in the UAE.A tentative plan had been discussed to extend More’s consultant contract through to the 2020 T20 World Cup had USA qualified, but once they failed in Bermuda, that became a non-starter. He oversaw USA’s ODI tri-series performances in Florida last month, where they went 3-1 in their opening round of Cricket World Cup League Two matches against Namibia and Papua New Guinea. Those were his last matches in charge. David Saker had left as fast bowling consultant coach to go back to Australia immediately after the Bermuda tour while batting consultant coaches Pravin Amre and Kieran Powell were not present in Bermuda nor Florida.Pamment had initially been contracted as fielding coach for USA when More came on board. However, he has been asked to remain to help oversee a transition period for USA’s next two tours – the CWI Super50 in Trinidad next month and a CWC League Two ODI tri-series against UAE and Scotland in Dubai in December – until a full-time appointment can be made in January 2020. Pamment is not expected to apply for the full-time role because, like More, he has a multi-year contract with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, having replaced Jonty Rhodes as their fielding coach in 2018.USA Cricket is seeking a full-time commitment after the failed strategy of hiring short-term consultants to replace Dassanayake for T20 World Cup Qualifier.Originally from Yorkshire, Pamment migrated to New Zealand early in his career and played 14 first-class and 33 List A games from 1993 to 1996. Aside from his stint with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Pamment previously coached Northern Districts in New Zealand from 2013 to 2017.

Aston Villa could repeat Watkins trick by signing "sublime" EFL star

Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw at Everton on Sunday stopped them from putting more pressure on Liverpool in first place.

The point ultimately put Unai Emery’s side third in the Premier League after 21 matches.

Despite the season already being a success, the boss is keen to add a couple of new additions to the squad in January.

Aston Villa’s search for an attacker

According to talkSPORT, Jonathan Rowe is a target for Aston Villa this transfer window with the Midlands side having 'clocked onto' his outstanding performances in the Championship so far this season.

However, they will not be alone in their quest for the attacker, with West Ham reportedly also interested.

Furthermore, David Wagner is confident of keeping hold of his star man this January.

The stats that show Rowe would be a good signing for Villa

Many top sides in the Premier League often overlook signing players from the Championship, but Villa knows how effective that strategy can be, with Ollie Watkins being the prime example of that.

The striker joined from Brentford in the summer of 2020 for £28m, and his move has been nothing short of successful, as the striker has netted 57 goals and registered 23 assists in 145 appearances.

Therefore, Emery could look to repeat that Watkins trick by acquiring another star from the Championship this season in the form of Rowe.

The 20-year-old winger only played in three matches last season for Norwich, but since scoring in all his first five matches of this campaign, he has arguably become one of the first names on the team sheet, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig having described his performances as "amazing."

Rowe is a versatile star who can comfortably play across the attack, which fits in with Emery’s likeness for having tactically flexible individuals. Nonetheless, the table below shows a handful of his stats from this season and how he compares to positionally similar players in the second tier.

Rowe happens to be Norwich’s top scorer this season with 11 goals in the Championship, five more than the second-highest, Adam Idah. This equates to 0.57 goals per ninety minutes on average, which ranks in the top two percentile for attackers in the league.

The Englishman has outperformed his xG and his goals/shot ratio is also in the top six percentile of positionally similar Championship players, highlighting the fact that he is a clinical finisher.

The Canaries ace is extremely hard-working off the ball, performing his defensive duties to a high standard, as shown by his tackles, tackles in the middle third of the pitch and his high touches in the defensive third metrics.

This attribute, along with his goal-scoring prowess, has drawn comparisons to Sadio Mane by Kulig, as the former Liverpool icon was known for his work off the ball and famously scoring 120 goals in 269 games for the Merseyside club.

The hunger to be relentless off the ball would make Rowe slot perfectly into Emery’s intense system and philosophy, and the ability to play as an inverted midfielder, a winger, and a number ten makes him a valuable player to have. It would be a smart signing that wouldn’t be overly expensive.

Ed Joyce appointed Ireland women interim coach

The former batsman takes over Aaron Hamilton, who was in charge of the side for more than four years

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-2019Former Ireland batsman Ed Joyce has been appointed the interim head coach of the country’s women’s team, replacing Aaron Hamilton, who was in charge of the side for more than four years. After retiring as a player in May 2018 following Ireland’s Test debut, Joyce assumed a new role overseeing leadership development and acting as a batting coach in the Ireland performance system.Hamilton’s exit comes after Ireland women lost all of their last eight T20Is, including four in the World T20 in the Caribbean last year. Joyce takes over the role just two months before the World T20 qualifying tournament in Scotland.”I’m excited by the talent and potential of this young squad – there were some extremely encouraging performances from several players during the West Indies series and this bodes well leading into potentially more important games later in the summer,” Joyce said.”It’s a great opportunity for me to further my journey in coaching, albeit on an interim basis until the end of the T20 World Cup qualifier. I have been coaching some of the top order batters on a 1-on-1 basis, as well as joining squad sessions in the lead-up to the West Indies series that just finished. On a personal note, I enjoyed working with Aaron during the last few months and wish him and his family well with the next step.”Joyce’s sisters Isobel and Cecelia were both a part of the Ireland squad at the World T20, but retired at the end of the disappointing campaign along with Clare Shillington and Ciara Metcalfe.

Man Utd in advanced talks to sign defender Scalvini in crazy money transfer

Manchester United are thought to be in advanced talks to sign a new defender in a crazy £40m+ transfer, according to one journalist.

Man Utd transfer rumours

The Red Devils, following the announcement of investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, could be active during the January transfer window after what has proven to be a poor season under Erik ten Hag so far.

One position where the club may need to strengthen is at the back, with rumours of United being ready to accept an offer for Raphael Varane this month. Should the Frenchman depart, United would be left with just Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans as senior centre-back options, with three of those four actually unavailable at this moment in time.

There have been plenty of defenders linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, as can be seen below.

However, it seems as if one player who is not on that list is emerging as a real target for United, who appear to be making their move behind the scenes.

Man Utd in advanced talks to sign Giorgio Scalvini

Man Utd News relayed an update from journalist Seb Ecrivain Foot of French outlet Les Bons Conceil Du Sports regarding United and Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini.

He claimed that the Red Devils are in advanced talks to sign the player by activating his release clause which is set at £44m.

“Man Utd is not far from completing the acquisition of the talented Italian defender Scalvini by paying £44 million. Negotiations are at an advanced stage, with the club ready to fulfill the release clause of the 20-year-old nugget.”

This comes after reports suggested a deal will require a "crazy" offer of at least €50m (£43m) from United to sign Scalvini, and it looks as if that is on course to being completed, should these latest claims prove accurate.

Scalvini is a right-footed centre-back who can also play as a holding midfielder if needed and appears to be going from strength to strength, with his Transfermarkt valuation at a career-high €40m. The 20-year-old already has seven senior caps to his name for Italy and 75 appearances under his belt for Atalanta after progressing through the academy. (Giorgio Scalvini stats – Transfermarkt)

He appears to be a future star. For example, football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described his style of play as ‘complete, elegant and dominant centre-back – comfortable to play as a RCB and LCB – modern defender, who combines strength with good technique and passing – perfect mix of a pure defender and ball-playing defender’.

Kulig also said that strengths of the defender are his pace, aerial duels, marking, athleticism, tackling and intercepting, anticipation, passing, technique and his ability to read the game, so he could turn into the complete package at Old Trafford.

Therefore, a winter window move could prove to be a shrewd one by the Red Devils, and by the looks of things, a transfer could be progressing.

Chelsea player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Forgotten men Reece James & Raheem Sterling bail out Blues after Callum Hudson-Odoi torments his old pals

The Blues staged an impressive fightback, with two of their substitutes making significant contributions late on in the 3-2 win

Chelsea always seem to do things the hard way. It took them until the final 10 minutes of the game to finally start playing against Nottingham Forest, ultimately showing impressive character to turn what looked as if it was going to be a defeat into all three points.

It was the Blues who started on the front foot – Mykhailo Mudryk giving the visitors the lead after eight minutes, darting inside Willy Boly in the box before sliding the ball past Matz Sels. It didn't last long, though, with Boly heading home via a deflection off Conor Gallagher to level things up.

The hosts, needing a point to secure their Premier League survival, went ahead after 74 minutes as Callum Hudson-Odoi tormented his former club by cutting inside and bending an effort past Djordje Petrovic in the Chelsea goal.

The game then went a bit bonkers, with the Blues scoring twice in quick succession, through substitute Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson – who had had a nightmare 81 minutes until his goal, put on a plate for him by the returning Reece James – to stage an impressive late comeback and keep their European qualification hopes very much alive.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from the City Ground…

Djordje Petrovic (6/10):

Big save inside two minutes as Chris Wood tried to lob him. Not his fault for either Forest goal.

Trevoh Chalobah (5/10):

Struggled to cope with the dangerous Hudson-Odoi and offered very little going forward after being given the nod at right-back. Moved inside when Gusto came on.

Thiago Silva (7/10):

A typically assured and solid performance from the Brazilian centre-back, who came out on top in his battle with Wood. Unlucky not to score as he glanced a clever header against the post in the second half.

Benoit Badiashile (5/10):

Got caught out inside two minutes by Wood's run in behind him but settled into the game after that. Sacrificed for Gusto as Pochettino attempted to deal with the growing threat posed by Hudson-Odoi.

Marc Cucurella (5/10):

Was deployed in an inverted full-back role but wasn't particularly effective, either in defence or attack.

Moises Caicedo (5/10):

Allowed Morgan Gibbs-White to nick the ball off him and race away to set-up Hudson-Odoi for Forest's second goal. Had been okay until that point.

Conor Gallagher (5/10):

Forest fans wanted him sent off for dragging down Hudson-Odoi but Cucurella's position ultimately saved him. A pretty ineffective display from the Chelsea captain.

Getty ImagesAttack

Noni Madueke (4/10):

Struggled to get into the game as ex-Chelsea defender Ola Aina marshalled him well. Hooked before the hour mark as Pochettino had seen enough.

Cole Palmer (7/10):

Claimed the assist for Mudryk's opener with a delightful through ball that cut right through the Forest backline. Looked a threat throughout.

Mykhailo Mudryk (6/10):

Started the game superbly well as he showed supreme composure to give Chelsea the lead. Faded after that, though, and was a passenger before eventually coming off for Sterling.

Nicolas Jackson (6/10):

Ran down blind alleys on multiple occasions in the first half and was at fault for the Forest goal, as he didn't bother following Boly's run. Headed into an empty net for the winner to save his bacon somewhat.

Malo Gusto (5/10):

Came on for Badiashile after 58 minutes but couldn't stop Hudson-Odoi from cutting inside and bending his effort into the far corner. Wasted a huge chance to score a fourth in stoppage time.

Christopher Nkunku (6/10):

Replaced the ineffective Madueke just before the hour mark and took up a No.10 role. Didn't manage to impact the game as much as he'd have liked.

Raheem Sterling (7/10):

Brought on for Mudryk with about 15 minutes to go and made an immediate impact, scoring the equaliser with a jinking run inside and smart finish into the corner.

Reece James (7/10):

A welcome return to action – his first appearance since December 2023 and his pinpoint cross left Jackson with the simple task of scoring the winner.

Mauricio Pochettino (7/10):

Changed the game with his substitutions after realising his starting XI weren't up to the job. Is helping inspire a recovery at the end of the season and clearly deserves more time to put things right.

Farke could unearth his next Cantwell in Leeds move for £6m EFL wizard

Leeds United have enjoyed a strong start to the 2023/24 campaign and are currently fighting to catch up with the top two in the Championship.

The Whites are third as it stands and seven points adrift of Ipswich Town in second place, and eight points behind league leaders Leicester City.

German tactician Daniel Farke was brought in to replace Sam Allardyce at the helm and arrived with plenty of experience at this level, having won two Championship titles during his time with Norwich City.

The board backed him throughout the summer transfer window as nine new players came through the door; including Karl Darlow, Ilia Gruev, Jaidon Anthony, Djed Spence, Joe Rodon, Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram, and Glen Kamara.

That may not be the end of the club's business this season, though, as Angus Kinnear did reveal that there will be funds available to the manager if further reinforcements are needed in January.

With this in mind, Farke could look to revisit his interest in a summer target who slipped through his grasp towards the end of the summer window – Ilias Chair – as the talented whiz could be his next version of Todd Cantwell.

Leeds transfer news – Ilias Chair

Journalist Darren Witcoop revealed on deadline day at the start of September that the Whites were keen on a deal to sign the Morocco international from QPR.

Leeds were said to have emerged as a late contender to secure his signature and that they were prepared to pay the £6m fee that their Championship rivals had been demanding.

Queens Park Rangers star Ilias Chair.

However, Farke and Nick Hammond were too late as it did not give QPR enough time to find a replacement before the window slammed shut, which meant that Chair ultimately stayed with the London club.

League leaders Leicester were also eyeing up the impressive winger as a target to bolster their forward options but they needed outgoings to free up space for him in their squad.

Chair is under contract with QPR until the end of the 2024/25 campaign and the club have an option to extend that by a further year, which suggests that they are not under any pressure to cash in on him.

Leeds must now persuade them to part ways with the talented whiz in January, possibly by stumping up the £6m fee early enough to give them time to find a replacement, as they could lose one of their own forwards.

TEAMtalk reported at the end of October that Roma, Lazio, and Everton are all eyeing up Wilfried Gnonto as a target ahead of the January window.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

The Italy international is said to want to play in the Premier League and saw a move to Goodison Park fall through over the summer as Leeds opted to keep hold of the 20-year-old dynamo.

It was also stated that sources close to the player believe that a transfer away from Elland Road is possible for the former Inter prospect at the start of next year.

Chair could come in as a replacement for the versatile attacker whilst also arriving as Farke's next version of Cantwell, who was a star for the German boss at this level with Norwich.

Cantwell's Championship form for Farke

The attacking midfielder made his breakthrough at Championship level under the current Leeds manager during the 2018/19 campaign.

Norwich won promotion to the Premier League that season, by winning the title, and Cantwell made 24 appearances and 18 starts in his first full year of senior football in Norfolk.

Former Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell.

The then-20-year-old contributed with one goal, two assists, and six 'big chances' created in that time as he failed to provide consistent quality at the top end of the pitch.

He followed that up with six goals and two assists in 30 starts in the Premier League for Canaries as they were relegated from the top-flight the following term.

This provided Farke and Cantwell with another opportunity to take the Championship by storm, and that is exactly what they did – alongside the likes of Teemu Pukki and Emiliano Buendia.

The Norwich academy graduate produced six goals, six assists, and seven 'big chances' created in 30 league starts as the Canaries won another second division title.

The QPR star endured a difficult start to this season as part of Gareth Ainsworth's very direct system that did not allow him to flourish in possession.

Marti Cifuentes arrived in the dugout and has helped the 26-year-old whiz to get back to his best as an attacker who can score goals, create chances, and beat players with the ball at his feet, as shown by the table below.

Chair had zero goals and two assists in his previous 14 Championship appearances, which shows that his new boss has got him firing again.

The right-footed magician, who was once hailed as an "exciting" prospect by pundit Glenn Murray, came into this season off the back of an impressive 2022/23 campaign.

He racked up five goals, nine assists, and 12 'big chances' created in 40 Championship outings for QPR, to go along with 2.4 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per match.

QPR forward Ilias Chair.

Chair also averaged 4.73 progressive passes and 4.26 progressive carries per 90 last season, which placed him within the top 12% of players in his position within the division.

These statistics indicate that the EFL wizard, who also predominantly plays on the left or as an attacking midfielder, has the quality to be Farke's next version of Cantwell.

He has the ability as a scorer and a creator to make an impact at the top end of the pitch on a regular basis in the right set-up, as shown by his form last term and under Cifuentes recently.
