Somerset's season gets back on track

ScorecardIn the wake of two defeats, two notable triumphs. Such is Somerset’s start to the season as they seek – with renewed conviction – to justify their billing as favourites to win the Championship for the first time. Worcestershire needed 257 on this, the third day, which in the past would have been quite feasible at Taunton. The pitch, though, was still giving assistance to the medium pacers and there was some swing under the cloud cover. Ultimately it was no contest, Gemaal Hussain finishing with career best figures of 6 for 33.Poor Worcestershire have now played four, lost four. Talking of conviction, there is precious little about their batting. Their bowlers, particularly Damien Wright, who took 6 for 56, had done notably well in dismissing Somerset for 185, but a first innings lead of 71, coupled with the accuracy of Somerset’s attack and some fine slip catching resulted ultimately in a straightforward triumph.”It was a different type of game to what is customary at Taunton,” said Hussain, who left Gloucestershire in the winter in the hope his England ambitions would come to pass. “There was some assistance in the pitch but we still had to bowl in the right areas. Length was the key. Which is my favourite end? That is a challenge for me. I enjoyed the pitch – and the whole match.”Somerset had begun the day with a lead of 154, seven wickets intact, which was sufficiently ominous for their opponents. The fact that James Hildreth, nightwatchman Steve Kirby, Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego went in quick succession, three of them to slip catches, told of the continuing dominance of ball over bat. Or, it might be added, the lack of sufficiently resolute technique.Lewis Gregory also went cheaply, likewise caught in the slips, which left Somerset greatly dependent on Jos Buttler to ensure they would reach a lead of getting on for 300, which was what Kirby had emphasised would be needed. Wright utilised the conditions extremely well, maintaining an accurate line from the Old Pavilion End, but he could not make this all-important breakthrough.Buttler may be short of runs this season, but evidently not of self-belief. On several occasions he moved down the pitch to Alan Richardson’s quickish medium, flat-batting him for four and then swinging him over the square leg boundary. This was altogether too much for the old stager, who on his 36th birthday was spoken to by umpire John Steele for too much ‘lip’ towards the precocious batsman. At lunch, Buttler was four short of a half century, having struck nine fours and that six. Charl Willoughby was his one surviving partner, but batting is not his strong suit. He was held at third man in the first over upon resumption, leaving Worcestershire the best part of five sessions to gain a rare victory. It was swiftly apparent that there was scant chance of that.Daryl Mitchell went to an in-ducker from Willoughby and James Cameron edged Hussain to second slip off the bottom of the bat. Then, the former Gloucestershire seamer effectively won the match with two wickets in an over: Moeen Ali, who had just survived a strong appeal, edged him to second slip, where Marcus Trescothick held a sharp catch. Three balls later, Alexei Kervezee was taken at the wicket off one that Hussain cut the other way.Matt Pardoe followed, bowled by Trego and, when Vikram Solanki drove Hussain too ppishly to extra cover, Worcestershire’s fleeting chances had gone. Gareth Andrew went to the first ball after tea, leg before to Kirby, Wright was very well taken at first slip by Hildreth off Willoughby, and, when Hussain changed ends, he had Jack Shantry leg before. And that was just about that.

Clarke the key for Blues after McDonald ton

Michael Clarke was the first of Australia’s Test players to make good use of their current round of Sheffield Shield outings, but he will need to turn his 71 into a big hundred after Andrew McDonald’s century put Victoria on top

Scorecard
In a rare Sheffield Shield appearance, Michael Clarke finished the day unbeaten on 71•Getty ImagesMichael Clarke was the first of Australia’s Test players to make good use of their current round of Sheffield Shield outings, but he will need to turn his 71 into a big hundred after Andrew McDonald’s century put Victoria on top. New South Wales were relying heavily on Clarke at the end of the second day, after the rest of their star-studded top order faltered.Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Phil Jaques all made starts but failed to capitalise, and at stumps the Blues were 5 for 171, still trailing by 207 runs. Adding to their problems, they had just lost Brad Haddin, bowled by Clint McKay for 2, late in the day, and Steven Smith was fresh to the crease on 4.However, Clarke’s form was a positive not just for New South Wales but also for the Australian side, after his struggles during last month’s Test series in India. He has spent much of the past fortnight worrying about his captaincy and batting in the shorter formats, but he enjoyed the return to the red ball two weeks away from the Ashes opener. He struck only three boundaries but his cautious tempo was justified after the Blues wobbled to 3 for 75. Peter Siddle, who is aiming to win a spot for the Brisbane Test, collected the first wicket when Hughes played on for 12, and in his first game for New South Wales, Watson scored briskly but was caught in the gully off the bowling of John Hastings for 20.That left plenty of attention on Khawaja, who began the season with a double-century and is viewed as the next in line for a Test call-up should the selectors run out of patience with Michael Hussey or Marcus North this summer. However, Khawaja departed for 23, snapped up at first slip by Cameron White off the spin of Jon Holland.Clarke began the rebuilding process with Jaques, one of eight Test cricketers in the line-up, who was batting in the unfamiliar No. 5 position. His innings ended on 28 when he was caught behind off McDonald, who bowled tightly to end the day with 1 for 11 off nine overs. It was a happy day all-round for McDonald, who still holds a Cricket Australia contract but has slipped well down the pecking order after playing four Tests in 2008-09. McDonald became the first man to post two centuries this Sheffield Shield season, when he built on David Hussey’s 122 to help drive Victoria to a strong total of 378.McDonald was eventually caught off the bowling of Smith, but the catcher, Nathan Hauritz, had another disappointing day. On the traditionally spin-friendly SCG, Hauritz finished with figures of 0 for 74 from 15 overs, while his main challenger for a spin position in the Test team, Smith, grabbed 2 for 45.

Nottinghamshire on top despite defeat

Scorecard
Leaders Nottinghamshire crashed to a 210-run defeat against Durham at Chester-le-Street but still hold a commanding lead with two games remaining in County Championship Division One.Nottinghamshire took six points from the match to lead Somerset by 22, and Yorkshire, who go to Trent Bridge next week, are a further three adrift. After being set a victory target of 391 in 78 overs, on a pitch on which Durham added 82 in just over an hour in the morning, the visitors’ attempts to bat out the day were undermined by Ben Harmison suddenly taking three wickets in four balls. With Mark Davies taking no further part after developing a sciatic nerve problem on the second day, Durham also lost Liam Plunkett, who limped off after bowling two overs with the new ball. Harmison was on for the fifth over of the innings and conceded 24 in four overs before lunch. There was a wide in his first over after the break, but with the score on 51 for one he suddenly got it right in his seventh over.Alex Hales pushed forward and edged to Michael Di Venuto at second slip and the next ball, perfectly pitched on off stump, bounced steeply. Australian Adam Voges, also pushing forward, edged it to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard. The hat-trick ball was short and wide, allowing Samit Patel to collect two easy runs, but the next delivery pinned him lbw on the back foot.A stand of 30 between Mark Wagh and Ali Brown was broken by Ian Blackwell, who had both lbw and later had Luke Fletcher caught at silly mid-off to finish with three for 23 in 19 overs. Harmison had 4 for 70, his final victim being Chris Read, who drove wide of off stump and edged low to third slip, where substitute Gareth Breese held a good catch.Andre Adams, slogging at almost every ball, skied a catch to mid-on off Mitch Claydon, and the only resistance came from Steven Mullaney. He was last out for 64, skying an attempted pull off Scott Borthwick for Mustard to take the catch 10 minutes before the start of the final hour.Durham’s fifth win of the season ended any relegation worries, but their hopes of a title hat-trick remain minuscule. Nottinghamshire need only five points from two games to deny them. In the morning Blackwell had failed to add to his 50, edging Fletcher to Read, but Borthwick played beautifully for the second time in the match, scoring 43 in an unbroken stand of 79 with Mustard, who was on 51 when he declared with the score on 361 for 6.

Defiant Hemp can't prevent nine-wicket defeat

Arshad Ali’s fourth first-class century cemented United Arab Emirate’s dominant position on the second day in Hamilton, his 126 taking allowing captain Khurram Khan to declare at 356 for 6

Cricinfo staff07-Jul-2010
Scorecard
Bermuda put up a far better effort in their second innings but still went down to a nine-wicket defeat against UAE with a day to spare as the visitors jumped to the top of the Intercontinental Shield table. David Hemp, the former Glamorgan and Warwickshire batsman, top-scored with 84 to lift his team to 332 but there was never going to be anyway back for the home side after their earlier demise for 56.Chris Foggo (60) and Steve Outerbridge (62) resumed their overnight stand at 107 for 1 and both reached their half centuries in a partnership that spanned 44 overs. However, neither could covert into the big score Bermuda really needed; first Foggo fell to Qasim Zubair then Outerbridge departed after 155 balls. However, at least Bermuda didn’t fold in a heap. Hemp added 98 for the fourth wicket with Irving Romaine (48) to eat into UAE’s lead. Romaine twice cleared the boundary during his innings, but fell short of his fifty when he was stumped off Ahmed Raza, the left-arm spinner, who toiled through 35.3 overs for impressive figures of 4 for 55.Once the stand had been broken the innings fell away against Raza and Khurram Khan. When Hemp was seventh out it was clear UAE wouldn’t face much of a run chase and in the end they needed 33. Despite Abdul Rehman’s run out they cruised home in under nine overs and Bermuda remain pointless in the competition.

Bowlers dominate at Edgbaston

There was a time, not so long ago, when batsmen visiting Edgbaston would drool in anticipation. Not any more.

George Dobell at Edgbaston04-Jun-2010
ScorecardThere was a time, not so long ago, when batsmen visiting Edgbaston would drool in anticipation. The slow, flat pitches promised a chance to fill their boots and, between the start of 2007 and the end of 2009, only five championship matches here ended in an outright result as sides found it well nigh impossible to claim 20 wickets. Not any more. Edgbaston is a ground transformed. No side has taken maximum bonus batting bonus points here this season and, judging by the evidence of the first day of this match, they’re not about to start. While Somerset’s first innings total of 268 might appear, from a glance at the scorecard, a modest total, it is likely to prove highly competitive. The pitch is offering assistance to bowlers of all types, with Warwickshire’s seamers achieving steepling bounce and their spinners gaining sharp turn and bounce. Batting, at times, was very difficult indeed. Some made it appear more difficult than others, however. Arul Suppiah laboured for 96 minutes and 56 deliveries over his two runs – his dismissal in the 24th over was cricket’s version of a mercy killing – while Jos Buttler (17 balls) was little more fluent.Others, however, coped more easily. Marcus Trescothcik, after a sticky start, produced some characteristically thumping drives, while James Hildreth underlined the impression that he has taken a step forward this season. Looking compact and solid, yet unleashing some rasping square cuts, Hildreth passed 50 for the sixth time in his last seven championship innings. Craig Kisewetter, Peter Trego and Alfonso Thomas also weighed in with useful contributions.Somerset also benefited from Warwickshire’s profligacy in the field. Depending on your level of generosity, the hosts spurned at least half-a-dozen chances, with young keeper Richard Johnson responsible for half of them.Johnson, only 21 and playing just his second championship match, understandably struggled. He can rarely, if ever, have kept to a legspinner of Imran Tahir’s class and this dry pitch was hardly the easiest training ground. No doubt he will improve for the experience. It was a reminder, however, of how much Warwickshire miss Tim Ambrose. Or an in-from Tim Ambrose, anyway. As things stand, it appears that Ambrose is on his way out of Edgbaston. Out of contract at the end of the season, he is currently unable to maintain a place in the team after averaging just 11.63 with the bat in championship cricket.Rather than playing for the seconds, he has been given time off to clear his head and take stock. Already Hampshire have issued an official 28-day notice of approach and it is likely that other counties will follow. It seems hard to believe that it was just 15 months ago that he was playing, with some success, for the Test team in the Caribbean.None of Johnson’s reprieves were hugely costly. But, on a pitch where Trescothick reasoned that 250 was a good score and on which batting will only grow more difficult, they could prove crucial. Zander de Bruyn, on 12, was missed off an outside edge off the bowling of Woakes, before Kieswetter should have been stumped off Tahir when he had just seven. Trego, on 14, was also missed off the impressive Ant Botha.Johnson was not the only culprit. Varun Chopra, at midwicket, put down Trescothick on 32, off Maddy’s first ball, while Tahir missed a hard caught-and-bowled opportunity offered by Kartik and Rikki Clarke, at slip, put down a fiendishly tricky chance offered by Thomas off Botha.Clarke more than made amends with the ball, however. Bowling admirably straight and with some venom, he was easily the pick of the Warwickshire seamers and fully deserved to be handed the second new ball. After promising much but delivering little as a bowler for some years, there are now signs that Clarke – in tandem with Warwickshire’s new bowling coach, Graeme Welch – is beginning to harness his undoubted ability. Here he dislodged Suppiah, who had taken a stinging blow to the helmet from a Boyd Rankin bouncer, with a short ball that reared on the batsmen, before Buttler edged a similar delivery to slip and Trescothick was drawn into feeling for one angled across him. At the time Clarke had figures of 3 for 3.Botha was, perhaps surprisingly, the more potent of Warwickshire’s spinners. He dismissed Hildreth, trying to withdraw his bat, with an unplayable delivery that bounced and turned sharply, before Kieswetter and Phillips were caught at short leg as they struggled to nullify the spin. The wicket of Hildreth was his 300th in the first-class game.Botha also took a fine catch at deep mid-wicket to dismiss Trego, who was slog-sweeping, before Woakes returned to wrap-up the tail. Given the spinners’ success, however, it was something of a surprise that Westwood did not call them into the attack until the 50th (Imran) and 63rd (Botha) overs.Warwickshire faced only 16 deliveries before stumps, but it was enough to suggest they face a torrid examination on day two. Their first innings scores in their last three games (113 against Lancashire, 127 against Somerset and 100 against Durham) don’t exactly inspire confidence, so when Ian Westwood was caught at gully, trying to avoid a short ball that climbed on him from Charl Willoughby, it brought a familiar groan from the Edgbaston faithful. It will be a surprise if this match reaches a fourth day.

Home advantage gives Mumbai the edge

Cricinfo previews the first semi-final between Mumbai and Bangalore at DY Patil Stadium

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Both their league games were one-sided affairs. Will the semi-final promise an even contest?•Indian Premier League

Big PictureAround last weekend, Royal Challengers Bangalore were a pleased side. Assured of a semi-final slot, they were looking forward to playing the knockout match on a pitch that suits their style of play, in front of a crowd that gets behind them vociferously. On Saturday, though, things changed. First they got a hammering from table leaders Mumbai Indians, which meant their net run rate fell, taking them to No. 4, setting up the semi-final against the same opponents. Before that thrashing started, there were two bomb explosions outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which meant the semis were moved to the DY Patil Stadium in the outskirts of Mumbai. Now Bangalore find themselves up against an imposing side at an intimidating venue: ask Adam Gilchrist, whose Deccan Chargers played a “home” match at DY Patil against Mumbai Indians. Yet Bangalore are one of the few sides this season that know that Mumbai can be beaten: they did so, convincingly, and in front of the Brabourne crowd. Mumbai would like to use their home advantage to make their first-ever appearance in an IPL final.Form guide (most recent first)Royal Challengers Bangalore LWLWL
Mumbai Indians LWWWL Team talkAfter having experimented in their last few matches, Mumbai should go back to full strength, barring injuries. Kieron Pollard and Lasith Malinga are the two clear choices for overseas players. Dwayne Bravo hasn’t been in great form, so they may give JP Duminy a look-in. Dilhara Fernando might have impressed them enough with his split-finger slower ball, but Ryan McLaren might get the nod because he is a decent batsman too.Mumbai Indians (probable) 1 Sachin Tendulkar (capt.), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Saurabh Tiwary, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 JP Duminy, 7 R Sathish/Ali Murtaza/Abhishek Nayar/Aditya Tare, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Ryan McLaren/Dilhara Fernando, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Lasith MalingaBangalore are not likely to tinker too much with the XI that lost its last league match to Mumbai. Their first match this year encounter was one-way traffic, with R Vinay Kumar and Dale Steyn slicing open Mumbai’s batting, and Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey leading the chase. But Mumbai returned the favour through an even more one-sided match, a 57-run win.In the spotlight Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey have fizzled out after having given Bangalore some smashing starts in the first half of the tournament. Both have recently had question marks against their roles in the team, but it might be too late to replace them. They were as big a factor behind the success as they have been behind a lukewarm second half, and they will not want to be failures if they come second-best in the semi-final.Lasith Malinga was one of the most difficult men to score off, bowling yorkers at will and using the slower ones as well. But he was rested for the last three matches, so the question is if he will be able to hit his rhythm right away when comes back for a pressure match.Prime numbers and trivia In the first half of the tournament, the opening stand of Kallis and Pandey averaged 72.6 per dismissal at a run-rate of 8.07 per over. In the second half, they have gone at 11.4 per dismissal and 5.34 an over.Sachin Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan have opened for Mumbai seven times, and their opening combination has averaged 46.43 at 8.55 per over. In the seven remaining games, Mumbai’s first wicket has averaged 24.43 at 7.6 an over.Of the six IPL matches played at the DY Patil, three have been won by sides batting first and three by the chasing sides. The average first-innings score has been 153, and second innings 140. Quicker bowlers have enjoyed the venue more, taking 56 wickets at an average of 22.05 and economy-rate of 7.48. The corresponding stats for spinners are 19 wickets at 26.74 and 7.82.Chatter “I don’t think any team has an advantage anywhere. You have to go out and do well.
