Pakistan look to move on from Wanderers horror

Match facts

Big picture

Were Pakistan really Test-ready ahead of the Wanderers Test? Going by their first-innings capitulation for 49 – their lowest Test score – certainly not. When you’re up against the No.1 side in the world, you want to give your players enough time to acclimatise and adjust to the seamer-friendly conditions. A solitary warm-up game in East London wasn’t enough. With the first Test starting nearly three weeks after the India tour ended, there were suggestions that Pakistan could have arrived in South Africa earlier, and probably squeezed in another warm-up. Mohammad Hafeez had stated recently that Pakistan needed more Tests in their calendar to get some momentum going. For a team that last played a Test in July, their preparation ahead of the Wanderers was inadequate. They were caught short against the moving ball and the captain Misbah-ul-Haq said Dale Steyn was too much for his batsmen to handle.Their opposition in the warm-up between Tests – the Emerging Cape Cobras – may not have been the strongest, but it was an opportunity to rectify those technical glitches, and Younis Khan was the only batsman to score a fifty. The pitch at Newlands is expected to give Pakistan some relief, as it is expected to favour the batsmen more than the Wanderers strip did. What Pakistan need to show is resilience, and since Misbah took over, they’ve shown plenty of that.South Africa have no such concerns and will look to wrap up the series at their strongest home venue. Graeme Smith, who led South Africa to the top of the rankings, will be playing his 100th Test as captain of his country. Their decision not to rotate their bowlers, unlike Australia, indicated they’re hungry to close out the series as soon as possible. The early finish at the Wanderers gave them an extra day’s rest.

In the spotlight

Sarfraz Ahmed was preferred ahead of Adnan Akmal as the wicketkeeper for the Tests, for reasons not properly explained. Though his keeping was tidy at the Wanderers, he had a poor game with the bat, scoring 2 and 6. As the lone specialist keeper in the squad, coupled with the absence of the Akmal brothers, his place in the line-up doesn’t look in danger, but Pakistan will need better contributions from him as a lower-order batsman. It would be unfair to write Sarfraz off too quickly, since he had played just one Test prior to the Wanderers since his international debut in 2007. The forthcoming Tests present an opportunity to establish himself in the squad as the first-choice keeper.Robin Peterson was a forgotten man during Pakistan’s collapse for 49, because he wasn’t required. Though he got 10 overs in the second innings, he returned wicketless. He admitted that it can be lonely as a spinner in these conditions: “It’s no fun sometimes being the spinner in South Africa and you go through periods of play where you don’t even bowl.” He is unlikely to be made redundant in Newlands, though, with the pitch expected to give more assistance to the spinners compared to the one at the Wanderers.

Team news

There was bad news for Pakistan on the eve of the Test, with the left-arm seamer Junaid Khan in doubt as he is yet to recover from a thigh injury. Mohammad Irfan, the 7ft left-armer who toured India recently, was anyway in line for a Test debut after his seven-wicket haul in the warm-up. Pakistan’s coach Dav Whatmore hinted at playing an additional spinner, Abdur Rehman, which means Rahat Ali, who went wicketless in the first Test, may have to make way.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Mohammed Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Umar Gul, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 and 11 Junaid Khan/ Mohammad Irfan/Rahat AliSouth Africa will play an unchanged line-up.South Africa: (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Dean Elgar, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Robin Peterson, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel

Pitch and conditions

The pitch was watered on Tuesday night and a fair amount of grass was shaved off. There are small hints of green and it looks the usual, good Newlands strip. It was expected to be a ‘grafting’ surface, something the batsmen should enjoy. There is a possibility of rain tomorrow so a delayed start is likely.

Stats and trivia

  • Since their readmission to Test cricket, South Africa have a 17-3 win-loss record in Cape Town, with all three defeats coming against Australia. Since their last defeat to Australia in 2006, they’ve won seven out of ten Tests, and drawn the other three. Overall, South Africa have won 20 Tests here, six more than their next-best venue (The Wanderers – 14 wins)
  • Jacques Kallis has scored 2158 runs in 21 Tests at Newlands, at an average of 77.07, with nine centuries in 33 innings. In his last six Tests here he has scored five hundreds, including his highest of 224 against Sri Lanka in 2012.
  • Pakistan have lost to South Africa every time they’ve played in Cape Town: South Africa have won both Tests and all four ODIs.
  • Dale Steyn is one wicket away from becoming the highest wicket-taker in Tests in Cape Town. Steyn is currently tied on 53 with Makhaya Ntini. While Ntini took his wickets in 13 Tests at an average of 29.09, Steyn has taken 53 in ten Tests at 20.98.

Quotes

“The more accolades there are, the more expectation there is on me. I woke up before the Wanderers Test at 4am dreaming I had got a pair.”
“I am really confident that these guys can fight back. Whenever we’ve had tough times, we have been able to come out of it.”

Confira outras respostas do presidente do Clube Atlético Tubarão, Luiz Henrique Martins Ribeiro:

Yorkshire secured maximum batting bonus points for the first time in two years as they reached 416 and built up a first innings lead of 163 on the third day against Northamptonshire. The visitors replied with 43 for 1 in 15 overs before bad light ended play in this Division Two match with 10 overs remaining at Headingley.Rain caused eight overs to be lost before play was able to begin at noon with Yorkshire on 190 for 3 and Joe Root needing only two more runs to complete his first century at Headingley. He did not have long to wait, steering his third ball from Lee Daggett to the third man boundary to reach the milestone in 137 deliveries. It contained 11 fours.Jonny Bairstow, 36 overnight, raised the century stand in the same over and his half-century followed from 92 balls with eight boundaries. It was another impressive display from Root but when he had reached 125 he fell to a splendid catch by wicketkeeper David Murphy, who took a sharply rising ball stood up to the stumps to Andrew Hall. The fourth wicket pair had put on 147 in 31 overs but the departure of Root slowed down Yorkshire’s progress and they lost their momentum in the afternoon session.Neither Bairstow nor new batsman Gary Ballance was able to force the pace and the usually brisk Ballance took 17 balls to get off the mark. In 10 overs together the pair scraped only 25 runs and Bairstow then lost his off-stump to Hall after making 68 from 137 balls, with 10 fours. The tempo remained flat even with the arrival of Anthony McGrath, who took 14 balls to get off the mark and Yorkshire were unable to take full advantage of Hall having to hobble off the field with a strain one ball into a new over. After McGrath and Ballance had scored 32 together in 11 overs, Ballance bobbed up a bat and pad catch off James Middlebrook to Alex Wakely at short leg to leave Yorkshire on 300 for 6 and it took Azeem Rafiq to bring some much needed impetus to the innings. He went on the attack with a series of perfectly timed strokes and, with McGrath also showing greater fluency, Yorkshire were able to go in to tea on 361 for 6 in 92 overs. But early in the evening session, Rafiq’s spree was ended by Daggett, the batsman flashing outside off-stump to be caught by Murphy for 37 from 44 balls with six fours. Two runs later, McGrath played across the line to a full-length ball from David Willey and was lbw for 47 and when Ryan Sidebottom steered Daggett to Stephen Peters at first slip in the 100th over a further 21 were still required for the fifth batting bonus point. They got there in the 104th over thanks to some clean straight drives by Mitchell Starc, and the last wicket pair added a useful 37 before Steve Patterson was bowled round his legs by Middlebrook.Coming on as first change, Starc pinned Middlebrook lbw with his fourth ball but with the light deteriorating he could be risked for only one over before giving way to Rafiq. Peters (20) and Kyle Coetzer (12) were the not out batsmen when bad light ended play with the visitors still needing to do a lot of work to deny Yorkshire a third win of the season.

ESPNcricinfo previews the first one-dayer between India and West Indies in Cuttack

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran28-Nov-2011Match factsTuesday, November 29
Start time 1430 (0900 GMT)Virender Sehwag and Duncan Fletcher have to guide a relatively youthful Indian side•AFPBig PictureIndia’s previous home one-dayer took place in front of a sparse crowd at the Eden Gardens, reinforcing fears over the quantity of cricket being played, but with Tuesday’s match taking place at the smaller cricketing centre of Cuttack, a jam-packed stadium is expected. Even though the the biggest crowd-pullers like MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are missing, tickets sales at the Barabati Stadium have been brisk, and even the practice sessions drew plenty of spectators.A full-strength India would be expected to roll over West Indies at home, but they are missing at least four of their headliners. In addition, they have lost the most experienced bowler in their squad, Praveen Kumar – he was ruled out of the first three one-dayers with an injury. That means the most seasoned of the quicks is Vinay Kumar, all of 11 one-dayers old, giving the stand-in captain Virender Sehwag something of a challenge.India are also missing two of their finishers, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, giving the likes of Rohit Sharma an audition for a permanent place in the hugely competitive middle order.Despite India facing these hurdles, Darren Sammy has no illusions of the task ahead of his team, calling the series a “very, very tough challenge”. Australia are the only team to have won a one-day series in India since April 2005. West Indies are boosted by the arrival of Kieron Pollard, an impact player who can quickly transform matches, and Lendl Simmons, their most consistent one-day batsman of the year. Sunil Narine, the unconventional Trinidad & Tobago offspinner whose variations mystified batsmen in the Champions League T20, could also pose problems in his first outing in international cricket.Form guideIndia WWWWW (Most recent first)
West Indies LWWWWWatch out for…Kieron Pollard has long had an uneasy relationship with the West Indies board, and despite his superstar status in the Twenty20 format, West Indies don’t consider him for selection. That leaves the one-day format as his only platform for international cricket. And, worryingly for him, if there’s one thing West Indies cricket have in abundance, it’s medium-pace bowling, big-hitting allrounders. Darren Sammy is, obviously, an automatic pick, Andre Russell has displayed his talent this year, and Dwayne Bravo could also be a contender as and when fit.Ravindra Jadeja was a deeply unpopular figure towards the end of 2010, but has won over some of the critics with his performances in the home-and-away series against England. Two Man of the Match awards and a bagful of wickets have secured his place in the XI for the current series, but he needs to extend that run. If Yuvraj Singh returns for the Australia tour, India could be tempted to go back to their World Cup-winning formula of seven-batsmen and four-bowlers, which could squeeze Jadeja out of the XI.Pitch and conditionsThe last time these two teams faced off at the Barabati Stadium was nearly five years ago, when India managed to defend 189. This time, though, it is expected to be a high-scoring match, as most ODIs in India usually are. “There will be plenty of runs for the batsmen,” the curator Pankaj Patnaik said. “I am not ruling out a total of 300. Bowlers will get good bounce and there will be a little turn for spinners.” Dew is expected to play a role, though a chemical spray will be regularly used to reduce its impact.Team newsThe absence of Dhoni means Parthiv Patel will have to be picked, dimming the chances of Ajinkya Rahane getting a game early in the series. Rohit Sharma, returning after a finger injury sidelined him during the England tour, is likely to get the nod ahead of Manoj Tiwary for a place in the middle order. The injury to Praveen could allow India play both their rookie quick bowlers, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron.India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 Varun Aaron , 11 Umesh YadavWest Indies (probable) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Sunil NarineStats and trivia India have won their previous nine one-dayers at home. Their last defeat was against South Africa in the league phase of the World Cup.
West Indies are tied with Australia as the team with the most ODI wins over India in India.Lendl Simmons has one hundred and seven half-centuries in 12 one-day innings in 2011.Quotes”Fitness-wise, we are stronger as a team. The batsmen are showing signs that they can bat for long periods. Most of all, we are showing a fighting spirit.”

“They are very good bowlers, youngsters who need to learn a lot. They are on the right track, and with coach Eric Simons they are doing a great job.”

Gayle meets board chief but future remains unclear

Chris Gayle and WICB chief Ernest Hilaire have met in an attempt to resolve issues that are keeping the opener out of international cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Aug-2011Chris Gayle, the West Indies batsman, and WICB chief Ernest Hilaire have held a one-on-one meeting in an attempt to resolve issues that are keeping the opener out of international cricket. Though there was no major breakthrough in the hour-long discussion at the WICB head office in Antigua on Tuesday, it was still a step forward from the acrimonious meeting in June that worsened relations between the two sides.Hilaire, the board CEO, was cautious when asked about how the meeting went. “We took a decision yesterday not to discuss the matter that is currently in front of us while it is still unresolved,” Hilaire told . “What I can tell you is that we had a frank and excellent discussion.”Relations between Gayle and the board reached breaking point after he gave an interview in April to a radio station during which he was scathing about both the board and coach Ottis Gibson. The Gayle-WICB standoff was sparked off when Gibson criticised senior batsmen following the team’s quarter-final exit at the World Cup. Gayle was subsequently ignored for the home series against Pakistan, after which he travelled to India to participate in the IPL – where he was the player of the tournament – while the WICB were under the impression he was undergoing rehabilitation. The heated meeting in June with West Indies Players’ Association representatives present didn’t resolve the problem, and Gayle released an emotional public statement in July explaining his stance. The CARICOM heads of government have also given a commitment to mediate in the dispute.

Somerset charge past limp Surrey

Surrey slumped to the fourth defeat of their Twenty20 campaign against a rampant Somerset at The Oval, limping to 131 for 8 in pursuit of the visitors’ 169 for 7

30-Jun-2011
Scorecard
Jason Roy’s promising innings was cut short by a stumping•PA PhotosSurrey slumped to the fourth defeat of their Twenty20 campaign against a rampant Somerset at The Oval, limping to 131 for 8 in pursuit of the visitors’ 169 for 7. A typically explosive start from Marcus Trescothick set the platform for James Hildreth’s fluent fifty, and a slick all-round performance from Somerset’s bowling attack meant Surrey were never able to launch a full assault on the target.Trescothick, who is the competition’s leading runscorer by some distance, continued his rich vein of form to put together an opening stand of 58 in five overs with a far more subdued Peter Trego. He slammed three fours and a six in the first five balls of Yasir Arafat’s second over to motor to 35 from just 16 deliveries, but was then clean bowled heaving at the sixth to give Surrey some respite.Zafar Ansari’s introduction in the seventh over tempered Somerset even further, as he conceded just three runs from his first six deliveries and generally denied the batsmen the opportunity to score. The frustration eventually got to Trego, who ran past a flighted delivery to be stumped for a run-a-ball 27.Jos Buttler gave a teasing taster of his talent in a short cameo that included some audacious shots before getting a thin edge on a bouncer from Stuart Meaker, who used the short ball to good effect to get rid of a threatening Kieron Pollard two overs later. Somerset had passed 160 by that stage, however, and although Dirk Nannes returned to shatter Craig Meschede’s stumps and ensure there would be no late boost the total was already a formidable one.It looked all the more so when Lewis Gregory trapped a subdued Rory Hamilton-Brown in front of his stumps for 1 from seven deliveries to mute what had already been a lacklustre start to the chase by Surrey. An impregnable off-side field cut down Steve Davies’ scoring options as he managed just 22 from 20 balls before holing out to legspinner Max Waller, and though Jason Roy managed to keep the innings afloat wickets fell at regular intervals. This match was played on the same strip as that used in England’s one-day international against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, but where the spinners were generally expensive in that game, tonight they were frugal and incisive. After Waller’s impressive start, Arul Suppiah’s left-arm spin got past Tom Maynard, Roy and Matthew Spriegel in successive overs as Surrey’s innings was completely derailed at 70 for 5 in the 12th over.Waller had a desperate Zander de Bruyn stumped by a distance soon afterwards, and some bright hitting from Arafat did little to brighten the mood of a decently large Oval crowd. Ansari showed that he has talent with bat as well as ball in an enterprising 24, but by then the game was dead and Somerset’s fifth Twenty20 win of the season was assured. The two points they earned took them up to second in the Points Table behind Hampshire.
