Karun breaks second season jinx

Dhawal Kulkarni. Abhimanyu Mithun. Suryakumar Yadav. All of them had exceptional maiden first-class seasons. All of them failed to replicate their success in the next. At the end of the Ranji Trophy semi-finals, Karun Nair had almost joined the list. Then came Monday. On the second day of the Ranji final, Karun showed his skills as a middle-order batsman. He was patient and persevered to remain unbeaten after batting for more than seven hours to emphasis Karnataka’s dominance.Naturally, Karun was relieved and elated with his effort. “I think this is the best and most special because it has come in a Ranji final and I hadn’t got any hundreds in this season. I was really looking forward to and hoping that I get one, so this is the most special,” he told reporters after his unbeaten 130 against Tamil Nadu.”I’ve been working hard so I was looking forward to such an opportunity. I think I was getting a lot of 30s, and I was getting out on one wrong ball.”So what was hampering him this season? Failing to cope with expectations? Being found out by the opposition teams? Trying too hard?.”Not so long ago, he was trying to cement his place in the Karnataka team. Suddenly he scored those three centuries and he was picked for India A. For a guy who was trying to cement his place in the Ranji side, it was too much to handle the pressure on the young shoulders of suddenly being in the selectors’ contention,” J Arunkumar, Karnataka’s batting coach, told ESPNcricinfo.”At some stage, many youngsters start wondering whether they should do something different. But Karun is a confident cricketer. He was quite relaxed since he knew he was hitting the ball well.”Karun made his debut midway through the 2013-14 season and made headlines by scoring centuries in successive games against Delhi, Uttar Pradesh in the quarter-final and Punjab in the semi-final. That was followed by a successful stint with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL – 330 runs at an average of 33 and strike rate of 142.24 – and Karun was in Australia with the India A squad last July.Since then, however, his form has slumped. After only one fifty in the first seven games, Karnataka decided to rest him for the last league game against Mumbai. Karun was asked to play the CK Nayudu Under-23 Trophy quarter-final and the move paid off as he scored a century and regained confidence. It reflected in his performance in the Ranji semi-final against Mumbai. His unbeaten 49 in the first innings was crucial in Karnataka digging themselves out of a hole and he has followed it up with a remarkable innings in the final. He came to the crease at 16 for 3 last evening, saw off the day and built an innings that could end up being match-winning.If he continues in the same vein, Tamil Nadu will be forced to field for three days, just like they did in their last final appearance, against Rajasthan in 2011-12.

Sunrisers look for bowling boost

Sunrisers Hyderabad are faced with the worrying prospect of facing a red-hot Chennai Super Kings machinery that, just like every season, is steam-rolling other teams into submission

Sunrisers need wickets with the new ball

Match factsApril 27, 2014
Start time 1830 local (1430 GMT, 2000 IST)Amit Mishra is one short of a 100 wickets in the IPL•BCCIBig PictureFirst points are always good. But just a day after registering their first win in this IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad are faced with the worrying prospect of facing a red-hot Chennai Super Kings machinery that, just like every season, is steam-rolling other teams into submission. Sunrisers’ top three clicked for the first time in the match against Delhi Daredevils, bettering their previous-best total of this season by 51 runs, but life is not likely to be as comfortable against the yellows.Shikhar Dhawan, Aaron Finch and David Warner, all got vital runs to boost their confidence but there were extended periods in the match against Daredevils when they looked short on fluency. The good news for Sunrisers is that they rode those spells as how the three perform against the impressive trio of Super Kings seamers and their steady spinners is going to be critical for them.More important perhaps is going to be how Sunrisers’ bowlers deal with Super Kings’ batsmen. The sight of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum can send sepulchral chill waves among bowlers early, so a lot will depend on if Dale Steyn raises his game a notch. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been impressive and can draw on the success he had against Smith in the recent World T20 match. Big efforts will also be needed from their stars from last season – legspinners Amit Mishra and Karn Sharma.Super Kings, on the other hand, are a confident bunch. Their batting is firing, their bowling doesn’t have any weaknesses their fielding remains one of the best in the tournament and they have never lost a game to Sunrisers. They just need to ensure no complacency sets in.Watch out forAmit Mishra spun an un-breachable web around batsmen during the recent Asia Cup and in the first round of matches in the World T20, fuelling questions about why he was not regular in the national side in the first place. But after overstepping once during the semi-final against South Africa, something has gone amiss. He is not able to control the flow of runs. He went wicketless against Daredevils and was torn apart in the match before that too. It’s a big game now and Dhawan needs his trump card to find his mojo again.Faf du Plessis is the only Super Kings batsman in top four not to score a half-century till now. But apart from one match – against Rajasthan Royals – the lack of runs from his bat hasn’t really affected the team as the openers have been brilliant. There is no immediate threat to his place in the team – MS Dhoni likes to stick to his XI – but du Plessis needs some runs to fortify the team’s batting further.Stats and trivia Amit Mishra is one short of becoming the only second bowler in the IPL to collect 100 wickets. The only other bowler to do so is Lasith Malinga Chennai Super Kings have picked up 30 wickets, the most this season. Royal Challengers Bangalore are second, with 20 wickets.

Khurram century powers UAE to victory

Khurram Khan’s fourth List A ton set the platform for United Arab Emirates‘ comprehensive 150-run win over Papua New Guinea in Christchurch.UAE, put in to bat, were precariously placed at 57 for 3 in the 10th over before Khurram strung together fifty-plus partnerships with Swapnil Patil, Rohan Mustafa and Vikrant Shetty for the next three wickets and take the team close to the 250-run mark. Khurram blasted 17 fours and two sixes during his 145-ball 138, but was dismissed by seamer Willie Gavera in the 44th over and UAE were subsequently dismissed for 280 by the 49th. Gavera was the pick of the PNG bowlers and finished with 3 for 39.PNG were unable to gather any momentum during the chase, and slumped to 45 for 5 inside 12 overs as the pacers Mohammad Naveed and Manjula Guruge ran through their top order. The Amini brothers – Chris and Charles – counterattacked with a 58-run sixth-wicket partnership, but once the captain Chris fell for 17, defeat was inevitable. Charles struck six fours and a six during his 44-ball 49, but only two other batsmen managed to reach double digits as the medium-pacer Amjad Javed too four wickets as he cleaned up the tail to seal the win in 28.3 overs.”That was a very important two points because PNG came into the Super Six stage with four points and most of the other teams came with two points. This stage of the competition you just have to beat every team, and we really respect PNG, they are an awesome team and have been doing very well but our guys did a wonderful job today,” Khurram said after the game. “I played better today. The last few innings I got out on 88 and 87 and 78 but I wanted to bat for all the overs and tried my best today.”A 72-run stand for the fourth wicket between the opener Irfan Karim and Morris Ouma paved the way for Kenya‘s 10-run D/L win against Hong Kong in a rain-affected match in Rangiora. Kenya, chasing 255, needed 32 off the last 28 deliveries before a second shower forced the umpires to end the game and award Kenya the victory as they were 10 runs ahead of the par score of 213.Karim scored 82 off 98 with seven fours, and added 55 for the second wicket with Ragheb Aga to set Kenya’s chase underway. Seamer Irfan Ahmed removed both Aga and Collins Obuya in quick succession, but Karim and Ouma’s partnership took the game away from Hong Kong. Karim fell in the 37th over, but Ouma remained unbeaten on 69 with seven fours.Hong Kong, in their innings, were lifted by captain Jamie Atkinson’s 85 that helped them recover from a slow start. He was run-out in the 37th over, but handy contributions from the rest of Hong Kong’s middle order, including Babar Hayat’s unbeaten 48-ball 45, propelled the team to a competitive 254 for 8.The game between Namibia and Scotland was abruptly halted after 12.1 overs in the second innings due to heavy rain and winds in Lincoln. Namibia, chasing 280, were 59 for 2 before the umpires stopped play, but the game is set to resume on Monday.

Finch, Marsh set up thumping Australia victory

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAaron Finch peppered the boundary with seven sixes and 16 fours•Getty Images

Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh shared an opening stand of 246 – the second-highest Australia partnership for any wicket in ODIs – in a clinical dissection of Scotland, who were beaten by 200 runs. The pair erased Geoff Marsh and David Boon’s Australia record of 212 for an opening partnership, made against India and a record that had stood proudly since 1986. That wasn’t the only record to fall. Australia’s 362 for 3 surpassed the 345 they scored against the same team, made here four years ago, and the 334 for 6 they made against Scotland at the 2007 World Cup.In the field, the hosts were athletic and efficient, but their bowling was blunt. They didn’t concede any boundaries for six overs, after choosing to field first. The score was 12 for no loss at that stage but Scotland simply couldn’t stem the flow of runs that followed.Finch didn’t quite reprise the brutality of his world-record Twenty20 score in Southampton, but played impressively, waiting for the right ball and picking his spot. He may have set Twenty20 records last week but he only had 107 runs from seven ODI innings before the trip to Edinburgh. On 24, he advanced to Majid Haq’s second ball of the day and was beaten. To the bowler’s dismay, the ball also deceived Northamptonshire wicketkeeper David Murphy. At the other end, Marsh did not look comfortable for a long time and struggled to adjust to the lack of pace in the pitch; but the batsman grew in confidence after punching offspinner Haq for two fours in consecutive overs.Few will remember those early difficulties when scrutinising the scoreboard in years to come. It took Marsh 87 balls to get to 50, but 61 deliveries later he had 150. He struck 16 fours, the same as Finch, and five sixes to Finch’s seven in a display of breathtaking acceleration.Gordon Drummond, who combined with Iain Wardlaw to make life difficult for the Australia batsman at the start, was the only bowler other than Haq to manage finish with respectable figures as Scotland tried in vain to build confidence for their final World Cricket League Championship matches in Belfast later this week.Australia’s strategy was simple: build the run rate from five an over to six and seven, keep wickets in hand and then go ballistic. When the Powerplay was called after after 33 overs, Wardlaw came back on with Finch 108 and Marsh 62 and the score at 181 for no loss.It was civilised carnage from then on, at least until the 48th over when Wardlaw had Marsh and Shane Watson caught off successive deliveries by Gordon Goudie in the deep. In those 15 overs, Australia added 166 runs. The first wicket went to Haq, as Finch mishit a big shot, but the batsman’s departure did nothing to slow the scoring. The two young Scotland openers, Freddie Coleman and Hamish Gardiner, came out to bat under a warm sun and dropped anchor in a steep chase, and soon Mitchell Johnson and Clint McKay had a wicket apiece.Matt Machan, who has impressed this season for Sussex, constructed an attractive 39 before holing out and Preston Mommsen, Scotland’s captain in the absence of Kyle Coetzer, was run out attempting a single.Faulkner deceived Berrington with a ball out of the back of his hand and Fawad Ahmed claimed his first ODI wicket as Scotland laboured to 162 all out in 44 overs. Johnson picked up the early wicket of Coleman and then came back to dismiss three tail-end batsmen in successive overs.

Tremlett trains with England

Chris Tremlett, Monty Panesar and Ben Stokes joined up with England’s squad for practice at Lord’s ahead of the second Test

If Steven Finn required any reminder that his place in the England side was in jeopardy, he received it with the sight of Chris Tremlett joining the England squad for training at Lord’s on Tuesday. While Tremlett has not been called into the England squad, his appearance did underline his continuing interest to the selectors and was another step towards a potential return. Tremlett last played for England in the UAE in January 2012 but was forced home from that tour through injury. Since then he has twice undergone surgery and, after a modest start to the season with Surrey, has just started to bowl at something approaching his best form.Finn endured a chastening final day of the Trent Bridge Test. Trusted to bowl only 10 overs in Australia’s second innings – that is three fewer than James Anderson bowled in one spell on the final day – Finn was hit out of the attack in two overs on Sunday and missed a tricky, but potentially crucial, chance in the field.Monty Panesar, the Sussex left-arm spinner, and Ben Stokes, the Durham allrounder, also trained with the England squad on Tuesday, with Tremlett bowling Jonathan Trott in the nets. The nephew of Bermuda’s Dwayne Leverock, Kamau, who is currently playing with Horsham, was also involved. It might be wrong to read too much into the appearance of any of the three players. None of them are currently required by their county sides while others jostling for England places, the likes of Warwickshire’s Boyd Rankin and Kent’s James Tredwell, are currently involved in games. It was also an optional net, with only Finn, of the England bowlers utilised at Trent Bridge, opting to bowl.
