Udaya Wickramasinghe, the former Sri Lankan international umpire, has died at the age of 70 following a sudden illness

Sa'adi Thawfeeq15-Apr-2010Udaya Wickramasinghe, the former Sri Lankan international umpire, has died at the age of 70 following a sudden illness.Wickramasinghe officiated in three home Tests between 1987 and 1997, against New Zealand (1987), Australia (1992) and Pakistan (1997) where he stood with the England umpire David Shepherd, and in 10 ODIs. Wickramasinghe became the first overseas umpire to qualify as an official instructor of the Association of Cricket Umpires (England) in 1988.A friendly and knowledgeable person, Wickramasinghe umpired for three decades having begun in 1969. He will be greatly missed.”A product of St Peter’s College and Dharmapala College, Wickramasinghe worked as an Immigration Officer in the Immigration Department throughout his career and after retirement he joined Sri Lanka Cricket as assignment umpire. He also officiated as a match referee.

Villa hope to sign goalkeeper in January

Aston Villa are hopeful of adding another goalkeeper to their ranks this month, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans says.

The lowdown

On Friday, Villa announced that they had agreed a deal to make FC Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho the first signing of the Steven Gerrard era, but it doesn’t look like they’re stopping there.

In terms of goalkeepers, Gerrard currently has Emiliano Martinez, Jed Steer, 20-year-old Viljami Sinisalo and teenager Filip Marschall at his disposal.

Martinez is the clear no. 1, but he was rested for both of Villa’s EFL Cup matches and was unavailable for the Premier League trip to Chelsea, with Steer standing in.

The latest

After they Johan Lange wrapped up the Coutinho loan, Evans tweeted that ‘Villa also want’ a ‘keeper and ‘may send younger stoppers out loan’.

They’d also like to bring in a full-back, with Bologna’s Aaron Hickey a target.

The verdict

It’s hard to imagine that Martinez is under any real threat. After all, this is a goalkeeper who was nominated the Yashin Trophy last year.

Instead, it seems more likely that Villa want an upgrade on Steer, someone who can push Martinez just that little bit more.

The Englishman wasn’t overly impressive when he got his chance in the league, conceding three goals at Stamford Bridge against a post-shot expected goals of only 1.8.

As a result, Villa may not be confident in him if Martinez is missing for a stretch of games.

Journalist drops exciting Aston Villa transfer claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is sure to look towards his former club Rangers for potential new signings in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

The former Liverpool skipper was appointed as Villa’s new manager following Dean Smith’s exit, and has presided over a superb turnaround in form, with their latest victory coming in the shape of a comeback win against Leicester in the Premier League.

Now, O’Rourke has suggested that with the January transfer window around the corner, Gerrard will be looking north of the border at some of his former players.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He will definitely have his eyes on players from Rangers. These are players he knows, he can trust, he knows how they work, and they know how Gerrard works, so it would probably be attractive for them if they want to move to Aston Villa.”

Hitting the ground running under Gerrard

Given that Gerrard has taken over at Villa Park midway through the season – hardly the perfect time for any new manager given that they have no pre-season to work with the players – it’s absolutely imperative any business that does get done in January is able to hit the ground running.

Signing players who the new Villa boss has already worked with at Rangers would allow them to acclimatise far better and far quicker than anyone else, while the chances of that signing going horribly wrong also gets drastically reduced.

The last thing Gerrard needs is a Morgan Sanson-esque signing whereby they arrive as a complete newcomer to the Premier League and with no previous connection to the manager. Sanson has been a drastically poor signing, featuring on just 12 occasions following his arrival 11 months ago.

January signings always carry that element of risk, and Gerrard targeting players from Rangers would go a long way to neutralising that.

Villa fans will surely be excited by O’Rourke’s transfer claim.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing this French midfielder…

Predicted Wolves starting XI v Norwich

After securing a 1-0 win over West Ham United last weekend, Wolves are back in action today with an away clash against Norwich City.

Speaking ahead of the match in his latest press conference, Wolves manager Bruno Lage revealed that the club have been dealt some negative injury news as Willy Boly will be absent today after suffering a muscular injury.

With this in mind, here’s how we feel Wolves could line up to take on the Canaries this afternoon, with two changes from last Saturday.

In goal, considering that he’s played in all of their league games so far this season, it seems likely that Lage will stick with Jose Sa to see if he can keep another clean sheet this time out.

For the back three, we can see the 45-year-old sticking with the same trio which managed to keep a clean sheet against West Ham, with Max Kilman and Romain Saiss on either side of Conor Coady.

Then for the wing-back positions, we think Nelson Semedo and Rayan Ait Nouri will keep their places in the team, with the same pairing of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in central midfield.

Although we reckon Raul Jimenez will keep his place in the side to see if he can add to his goal tally for the season after scoring the winner against David Moyes’ Irons last weekend, we think Lage will make a couple of attacking changes to freshen up his team slightly.

The first of those sees Adama Traore come back in on the left wing instead of Hwang Hee-chan, who didn’t have a shot at goal against West Ham. Also, Francisco Trincao comes in for Daniel Podence, who is currently earning a wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, to see if he can help Jimenez in the attack. Despite Podence setting up the winner seven days ago, Trincao has had a higher WhoScored rating overall for the season and could be restored today.

With Norwich having struggled in the league so far this season, this is a great opportunity for Wolves to secure another win and push themselves higher up the table.

Tottenham transfer news on Sayers

An insider at Tottenham Hotspur has now dropped some insight on their new signing Charlie Sayers.

The Lowdown: Sayers signs

As confirmed on Tuesday afternoon on the official website of the Spurs faithful, Sayers has now joined the Academy from Southend United on a scholarship programme.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The North London club were reportedly ‘impressed’ with the young left-back, who has spent the last few weeks on trial with them, as per Lilywhites insider John Wenham.

He had played in six matches for Southend in the National League earlier this season, before making his debut for THFC’s U18s (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Wenham on Sayers

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham has now given some insight into Sayers, and claims that he could be promoted to the U23s soon:

“I knew he was going to sign as soon as he captained the Under 18s last week.

“We wouldn’t have given him the armband if he was still on trial.

“From what I understand he’s already trained with the Under 23s as well.

“Everything else I have heard about him is really exciting. He’s already played for Southend’s senior side.

“He can carry that experience into the Under 18s and he will be looking at a space in the Under 23s too.

“Dennis Cirkin left and joined Sunderland in the summer and we haven’t replaced him.

“So, is there a chance for him to go even further straight away? I wouldn’t rule it out.

“This is a really exciting move and I can’t wait to follow Sayers’ development.”

The Verdict: Bright future

The fact that he is only 17 years of age and could be promoted to the U23s already suggests that Sayers has a bright future on his hands.

Having already played senior football with Southend, he would have learned a lot from his experience, and playing in those physical games will only speed up his development.

If the Englishman can now impress with the U23s as well as the U18s, he should certainly catch the eye of Antonio Conte, who could use some cover for Sergio Reguilon at left-back, given that Ben Davies has been playing as a central defender in his new system.

Nonetheless, Sayers is a player that you can see coming through the Academy and into the senior squad at a later date.

Everton plot Harry Souttar bid

Everton have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Stoke City defender Harry Souttar as they prepare for Yerry Mina’s potential departure.

The Toffees were first linked with the highly-rated 23-year-old after it was revealed Duncan Ferguson had personally scouted the youngster ahead of a possible move.

And now, with Mina believed to be keen on a transfer to Serie A next summer and Inter amongst the clubs interested in his services, it appears Everton have already begun making plans to bring in his successor.

Spanish outlet Fichajes reported towards the end of last month that the Merseyside outfit are keeping a £20m sum aside as the January window approaches in order to convince Stoke to part ways with their prized asset as Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his defensive ranks.

Heir to Yerry Mina

Standing at a whopping 6 foot 7, Souttar certainly has the stature and physical prowess to replace the sizeable Mina in Everton’s backline.

But despite his imposing frame, the Australia international is also capable of carrying out the expectations placed upon a modern-day centre-back.

Potters boss Michael O’Neill has been quick to get this point across in the opening weeks of the campaign, praising Souttar’s ability on the ball in a post-match interview.

“I think Harry’s got a lot to offer,” he said. “The most pleasing thing for me is that Harry has made us better in terms of starting games from the back.

“People might just see 6ft 7in and think it’s all about the aerial side of the game but if anything it’s not like that for Harry. He’s a quality footballer, and I think he’s adapted to the Championship really well.”

After spending 2019/20 on loan at Fleetwood Town, Souttar has since established himself as a regular starter at the heart of Stoke’s defence over the last 18 months, and he’s currently enjoying a stellar campaign.

As per WhoScored, he’s averaged a whopping 5.8 clearances per league game this term – the highest total amongst his teammates – and also managed 1.9 tackles and 1.9 interceptions – the fourth-highest tallies compared to his colleagues.

Whether he’s able to make the step up to the Premier League remains to be seen, but the Everton supporters would surely love to see another promising young talent take to the Goodison Park pitch, especially if he possesses similar qualities to Mina.

Rangers ace Roofe goal for Jamaica

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing as some footage emerged of Kemar Roofe bagging for Jamaica against Honduras in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Ibrox faithful, the 28-year-old scored his first goal for Jamaica, as he tapped home from a driven cross to give his team the lead in the first half.

Having been born in England, Roofe has switched his allegiances to Jamaica in order to get more opportunities to play, and it certainly looks to have been the right decision as he scored what he will hope will be the first of many at international level.

With Premier League stars such as Leon Bailey and Michail Antonio who also play for the national team, there is no doubt that the striker will enjoy his time playing for his country.

LFC fans want Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave

A number of Liverpool supporters would be happy to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave the club following an update regarding his future.

The 28-year-old’s Reds career has been an interesting one, with highs and low dotted throughout. Oxlade-Chamberlain became a key figure in the second half of the 2017/18 season but he has arguably never been the same player since suffering cruciate ligament damage in that same period.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The former Arsenal midfielder has certainly chipped in positively at times, scoring 14 goals in 116 appearances, but injury problems and inconsistent form have held him back. Indeed, he came in for criticism from many Kopites for his performance in Sunday’s defeat at West Ham, when he lost the ball 13 times and failed to make much of an impact from midfield.

According to Goal’s Neil Jones [via Anfield Edition on Twitter], ‘there has been little sign of movement’, with regards to Oxlade-Chamberlain signing a new deal at Liverpool, adding that it may be ‘hard to see a long-term future for him on Merseyside’ if his performances don’t improve. His current contract expires in the summer of 2023.

Swann sizes up spin-twin summer

There was a time, not so long ago, when spin bowlers were utterly surplus to requirements during the early season Test match at Lord’s. The legspinner, Chris Schofield, made his debut during the Zimbabwe Test in 2000 – at the time the earliest Test ever played in England – and couldn’t get a bowl as Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick sealed a crushing innings victory. The trend continued in later seasons, as Gareth Batty and Ashley Giles were also left to graze in the outfield during seam-dominated contests. Their selection seemed superfluous at best and a misappropriation of resources at worst, as England exploited their home advantage ruthlessly with five innings victories in seven contests, including a thumping innings-and-261-run margin when Bangladesh came to town in 2005.But then the spell was broken and the life in the surface drained away (possibly via the £1.5million drainage system that has made Lord’s into one of the most reliable all-weather surfaces in the world, but also one of the thirstiest). Ever since that Bangladesh result, England have failed to force victory in any one of their seven Tests at Lord’s. In July 2005, they lost to Australia by 239 runs, before drawing a blank in six consecutive games against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies, India, New Zealand and South Africa.”There’ve been a number of reasons,” said James Anderson, who – incredibly – is one of only two players in the match, along with the captain, Andrew Strauss, who has experienced the winning feeling in St John’s Wood. “In the first Test against India we had them nine-down and it rained, which didn’t help. But it’s something we’re looking to put right.”Having named a remarkably streamline 12-man squad, the permutations available to England are few and far between as they seek that elusive victory. But, with another belter in prospect and the weather set fair for the rest of the week, it is not impossible that England will buck all received wisdom about early-season English pitches, and select two spinners for a match which begins on May 6, the earliest-ever start to a Test match in the country.”It’s not beyond the realms of possibility,” said Graeme Swann, who is expected to line up for the contest come what may, having established himself as England’s senior spinner over the course of an eventful winter. Whether he is joined by Monty Panesar depends on whether England are willing to make a gamble of arguably equal proportions, and select two debutant seamers, in Graham Onions and Tim Bresnan, for the first time since Mark Ilott and Martin McCague lined up at Nottingham in the 1993 Ashes.”In England spin doesn’t tend to play as big a factor as overseas, but I still think it’s very important,” Swann said. “You know you’re not going to get the same chance as overseas, and get given the ball and bowl unchanged all day, but it tends to be the partnership breaker and pick up key wickets.”Swann and Panesar certainly did their utmost to justify their retention as a spin pairing during England’s last Test match, against West Indies at Trinidad in March. Left with 66 overs in which to claim ten second-innings wickets after a final-day declaration, the pair climbed all over a timid batting order, taking a combined haul of 5 for 47 in 40.5 overs as West Indies clung on desperately to their decisive series lead.”The Tests in the West Indies didn’t really suit spin or seam,” said Swann. “We tried a couple of different methods to get 20 wickets, and didn’t quite get there. But personally I loved that last Test match, bowling in tandem with Monty. I’ve always gone on record to say that I think cricket is better when there are two spinners bowling. It makes the game move a lot better, and it’s more exciting.”Swann and Panesar, once county colleagues at Northamptonshire, have occasionally bowled together in the Championship to good effect. “We’d have done ourselves no harm had we managed to win that Test, but I was excited by the brand of cricket we were playing at the end of it,” said Swann. “As a spin bowler I was in the thick of it and kept getting thrown the ball which is a nice feeling. You don’t want to bowl five overs and go and stand at third man because your captain thinks you are a bit of a tosser.”In fact England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, gives the impression of being a leader firmly in tune with his spinners. “If you get the chance to set your own fields and bowl where you want, then it’s the thumbs up and Straussy is like that,” said Swann. “In the West Indies he seemed to keep throwing me the ball, although I don’t know whether that was because the seam bowlers had had enough.”West Indies, for their part, have the lanky Sulieman Benn to call upon at Lord’s, as well as Chris Gayle’s under-estimated off-darts, but Swann imagined that whoever does get selected would endure some hard toil on what promises to be another flat and featureless strip. “Lord’s is a belting batting wicket, and the powers that be are probably happy that the games here go five days,” he said. “I’d love it if all wickets were like Northants in August, but I don’t think that’ll happen.”Looking further afield, the two-spinner policy could well be one that England calls upon come the Ashes, especially now that Australia, shorn of the services of Shane Warne, are struggling to find an adequate slow-bowling replacement. Their latest selection, Bryce McGain, was flogged for 149 runs in 18 wicketless overs during a traumatic debut in Cape Town in March, and it remains one of the few departments in which England can realistically claim the pre-series ascendancy.”I’m not going to say we should prepare wickets that favour spin bowlers,” said Swann, “but whichever way we can win a Test, that’s the way we’ve got to approach it, regardless of who were are playing against or where. It’s disappointing we are not playing on a couple of grounds which favour our methods of winning Test matches, but we’ve got to roll with that and move on.” As with many of his team-mates, the non-selection of Old Trafford as an Ashes venue clearly grates. But then again, such Ashes talk remains premature, because Swann himself is still a rookie in international terms. Until he is named in the eleven to take on West Indies on Wednesday, he will remain uncapped in home Tests, a fact that took the man himself somewhat aback.”Stupidly I hadn’t even realised until yesterday, when Cooky said, this will be your home debut,” said Swann, whose first six months in the side – encompassing the Mumbai terrorist attacks and the Pietersen-Moores debacle, as well as several on-field dramas – have been among the most eventful in England’s long Test history. “There were bombs going off, and flights home, and petulance here, and captains going there, and different coaches, it was like being in a pantomime. I completely misread the script and thought I must have played 50-60 Tests by now. In fact it’s only five.”Swann’s tally might well have been 50-60 Tests had he made his debut during his first England tour back in 1999-2000. All that is history now, but his roundabout route to recognition is remarkable nonetheless. “Sometimes I still find it hard to believe I’m playing for England, because I had so many years when I didn’t believe I was ever going to play again,” he said. “I wake up every day with a little smile on my face, a bit of a cheeky grin, because I still feel like a bit of a charlatan, sneaking a living. Then again I still feel like I’m an awardwinning rock star who hasn’t yet been discovered. But the truth is I’m crap at that.”His prospects of an extended international career have been dramatically improved by last month’s successful operation on his right elbow, from which no fewer than 29 fragments of bone were removed by the surgeons. “I think it surprised a few people just how much junk there was in there,” he said. “Luckily I haven’t had to change anything, but my arm was a bit of a mess after the winter.”It didn’t affect my bowling so much, it was just after a day’s bowling it was almost impossible to start up again the following day. Once it had all gone, I’m now waking up in the morning and it doesn’t feel like it’s falling off, which is a relief.” Given the amount of work he is likely to be put through this summer, starting at Lord’s and extending through all formats of the game, his fitness is a timely fillip for a team that could really do with spinning a victory of any description as soon as possible.
