Rondon upgrade: Newcastle eyeing Duvan Zapata

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle are tracking Sampdoria goal machine Duvan Zapata, claims Lee Ryder of The Evening Chronicle.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Ryder, sources in Italy believe the Magpies have sent scouting missions to keep an eye on Zapata.

The 27 year-old has been on loan at Atalanta all season, bagging 22 goals in all competitions.

The report claims Atalanta have the chance to sign him permanently this summer, and will take that option before selling him on for a profit.

Italian papers quote his price at around £38m, says Ryder’s report, and there is also interest from West Ham, Roma and Inter Milan.

Rondon but with more goals?

It’s fairly well documented that West Brom will expect around £16m for Salomon Rondon, so is Zapata worth over double that price?

Well, the five-cap Colombia international certainly tops Rondon when it comes to putting the ball in the net, grabbing 22 goals and 7 assists in 37 appearances this season.

Several of those goals came in a quite frankly ridiculous patch of form, when the 6 ft 2 front man grabbed 19 goals in the space of 15 games during November, December and January.

Where he stands out as opposed to other possible Rondon replacements though, assuming Mike Ashley opts not to spend £16m on a soon-to-be 30 year-old, is that Zapata knows what Benitez wants from a number nine.

The Colombian ace played under the Spaniard at Napoli, where he struck 15 goals and 5 assists in 54 games, despite very rarely getting to be the main man in the attack.

This understanding of Benitez’s expectations for a target man, along with the far superior goalscoring record to Rondon, would make Zapata an excellent choice for the Magpies to smash their transfer record for the second time this year.

Nottingham Forest fans urge for Appiah to play bigger part after receiving international nod

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest supporters have been begging for Arvin Appiah to play a bigger part in the first team picture after his England U19s call up.

Following the announcement that he’d join up with the England U19 squad, fans of the Reds were quick to plead that he should now be getting more minutes in Forest’s side, displaying a strong show of faith in the youngster.

Certain fans have been calling for him to actually get a start in the team, but there are split opinions with some thinking he should settle for a place on the bench for the time being.

However, there seems to be some agreement that it is about time he was included in Martin O’Neill’s immediate plans.

One fan gave specific reasoning behind why the 18-year-old deserves more minutes, suggesting that with a lack of pace in the side he could have a real impact on the squad. That comes following their defeat to Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

The forward has been hotly tipped by the club and recently signed a new long term deal with Forest. In February he was also named among FourFourTwo’s 50 most exciting English teenage footballers.

England will be hoping to seal their place at the U19 Euro finals when they meet Denmark, Greece and Czech Republic this month.

Here’s how supporters reacted to Appiah’s news.

Tottenham fans react to Pochettino consoling Torreira

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham and Arsenal played out an ill-tempered 1-1 draw at Wembley on Saturday.

Both sides were awarded a penalty in the north London derby at the national stadium, with Harry Kane converting from 12 yards and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seeing his effort saved by Hugo Lloris.

Aaron Ramsey had opened the scoring for the Gunners prior to Kane’s equaliser, with Aubameyang’s miss coming in injury time.

Following that, Lucas Torreira was sent off for a challenge on Danny Rose that was deemed to be dangerous.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino was subsequently pictured attempting to calm the Uruguay midfielder in the tunnel, as Torreira looked set to confront match officials to plead his case.

That the manager of Tottenham decided to intervene on the Arsenal’s midfielder’s behalf has caused some consternation on Twitter, with Spurs fans urging Pochettino not to act in such a manner again.

Indeed, many also believe that he may well have been warning Torreira against making another challenge of such a nature on one of his players.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below.

West Ham fans react to Sears injury blow

Ipswich Town striker and former West Ham United man Freddie Sears has been ruled out for a minimum of nine months with a cruciate ligament injury, per Sky Sports, and Irons fans have been quick to react to the news on Twitter.

The forward has scored six goals and provided five assists in 23 Championship matches thus far this season.

Sears sustained the injury during Ipswich’s 3-0 derby loss to Norwich City and was substituted off after a tackle from Tom Trybull at the weekend.

The news is a major blow to the Tractor Boys, who are rock-bottom of the Championship table.

Check out Neymar’s controversial new haircut for 2019 and Xherdan Shaqiri as you’ve never seen him before in the video below…

Sears began his career at West Ham United – scoring an incredible winner in a 2-1 triumph against Blackburn Rovers on March 15, 2008 having come off of the substitutes’ bench to make his senior debut for the club -although he would only find the net for them on two more occasions in another 57 outings in all competitions.

He took in loan spells at Crystal Palace, Coventry City, Scunthorpe United and Colchester United before securing a permanent move to the latter.

The striker spent three years there prior to his move to Ipswich but he retains a place in Hammers’ fans hearts, who have expressed their disappointment at his latest injury blow.

Ganhar do maior rival é melhor ainda.

Um time jogar bonito e vencer é a situação ideal.

MLS Cup 2022: Each team's outlook heading into playoffs

GOAL divides the 14 playoff teams into four tiers to assess what to expect in the postseason

There is perhaps no more purely unpredictable disaster of a soccer tournament on planet Earth than the MLS Playoffs.

Every year, teams assemble after surviving a grind of a regular season which should give us a pretty good idea of where teams stand. And, ever year, it all rapidly turns into complete chaos as contenders drop like flies in games that descend rapidly into madness.

It's one of the most lovable things about soccer in this part of the world, the unpredictability of it all. As big clubs continue to dominate in Europe, there's something special about what goes on in MLS, where nothing matters except which team can get hot at the right time.

Because of that, predicting winners and losers is never an easy task, but we can assess what to expect from the 14 teams that make up this season's playoff participants.

Here's a look at each team's outlook heading in the postseason:

Victor Decolongon / Getty ImagesThe tiers

To give a better picture of where each team stands, we'll be dividing them into four easily- understandable tiers.

Tier 1: Championship or bust. We all know what this means. If this team fails to win MLS Cup, everyone involved will be very disappointed.

Tier 2: Got a shot. Teams that have a realistic chance of making a run and could theoretically lift the trophy at the end of all of this madness.

Tier 3: Could make a run. Probably not MLS Cup contenders, but they could certainly take one out at some point.

Tier 4: Good luck. Hey, they made it this far. A win would be fantastic, but just making the playoffs is a victory.

AdvertisementLAFCLAFC

When you put together a roster like LAFC's, there can only ever be one expectation.

LAFC have essentially assembled the Avengers in Hollywood, somehow skirting salary cap rules to bring in megastars for one big playoff push. Gareth Bale, Giorgio Chiellini and Christian Tello joined on relatively cheap deals, joining a team that was already loaded with starpower. Then, just for good measure, they brought in another Designed Player, Denis Bouanga, to join Carlos Vela and co. in the attack.

It's an absolutely sickening amount of talent for an MLS squad and LAFC, as expected, marched right to a Supporters' Shield. But that isn't the trophy any of those players are here for and, with that in mind, they can only go in one tier.

Tier: MLS Cup or bust

GettyPhiladelphia Union

The Union have built something so, so special.

Basing their identity on developing young talent, the Union have constructed a pipeline that seemingly never stops. Young stars sign, young stars shine and young stars leave, only to be replaced by ones that are seemingly better than before.

When you take that and add in signings like Daniel Gazdag, Julian Carranza, Mikael Uhre and Kai Wagner, you have a machine that can go out and beat teams by a handful of goals, which is something the Union did several times this season.

The Union legitimately have All-Star level producers in goal, central defense and in the midfield. The attack, meanwhile, is deep with guys that can score. You could realistically say they have the best defense and attack in MLS.

That said, it feels like its a step too far to put them in "MLS Cup or bust" territory. It could be argued that they could be the favorites to win it all, but it doesn't feel like it would be doom and gloom if they didn't. They may be the best team, but the Union failing to win it all wouldn't have the same consequences as LAFC would.

Regardless, they're right on the line and have plenty of reason to think they should lift the trophy at the end of it all.

Tier: Got a shot

Getty ImagesAustin FC

What a turnaround from Austin FC, who went from wooden spoon contender to MLS Cup contender in one year.

Lots of credit will go to Sebastian Driussi, a legitimate MVP candidate who is among the best players in MLS, but this is a team that is ready for the big stage. They have MLS experience all over the roster in players like Maxi Urruti, Diego Fagundez, Ethan Finlay and Alexander Ring. And then there's Driussi, who is that player that all MLS teams need: a difference maker.

Do they have enough pure talent to compete with the best of the best in a one-off game? That remains to be seen. But when you have someone like Driussi leading the line and a team that is built to understand the nonsense of the MLS playoffs, you won't be afraid of anyone.

Troughton turns illustrator for new book

Jim Troughton was perhaps never considered an artist as a batsman but he is now reaching for his easel to illustrate a new children’s book. Troughton, who captained Warwickshire to the 2012 County Championship, has worked on The Legend of Morvidus, The Bear the bat and the Ragged Staff. All royalties Troughton, now Warwickshire fielding coach, receives from the book, written by local author Rachael Wong with a foreword by Ian Bell, will be donated to the Warwickshire Cricket Board, who support youth cricket across the county.Morvidus was the ancient Lord of Warwickshire and King of Britain, whose bear and ragged staff badge was adopted by Warwickshire.”Warwickshire has been a huge part of my life and the children who read The Legend of Morvidus will understand exactly why it is such as special club to so many of us,” Troughton, said. “Getting involved in the illustrations of the book has been fantastic and hopefully its publication will not only build a greater bond between youngsters and the club, but also encourage many to get involved in cricket.”Wong added: “Jim has put an enormous amount of time and effort to produce these wonderful illustrations and it has been great to work with him on this project, which will appeal to cricket fans of all ages and hopefully provide more cricketing opportunities for youngsters.”The book is based on how a young boy finds the strength to overcome his nerves ahead of his first cricket match. However, after finding out more about the bravery shown Morvidus, he goes on to excel.”
