Jadeja, Shami shine as India blow Scotland away for huge NRR boost

Rahul and Rohit killed the game off in a ridiculous hurry, helping chase down the target with 13.3 overs to spare

Jadeja: Because of the dew, the entire game changes

India outclassed Scotland and in doing so also bolstered their hopes of staying alive in the 2021 T20 World Cup.It was a night to remember for birthday boy Virat Kohli. Everything went according to his plan. First, he won the toss. Then he watched as Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami bowled the opposition out for 85. KL Rahul whacked 50 of those runs all by himself and ensured victory with 13.3 overs and eight wickets to spare.

The early intent
It was always unlikely that India would lose to Scotland, but they still had to play well because there was another very important box to tick. Net run rate. That’s why Jasprit Bumrah began with a slew of yorkers in the first over. That’s why Varun Chakravarthy followed him, hoping to leverage his mystery spin for wickets against a set of batters who had never faced him before.India were simple with their plans and ruthless with their execution. The quicks bowled quick and at the stumps. The spinners bowled tight and spun it a mile. The batters went out and gave it a superb whack.India are now in third place – above Afghanistan – with the best net run rate (1.619) in Group 2. Now, if Afghanistan beat New Zealand on Sunday, India will be through to the semi-finals.The problem facing Jadeja
Nearly all of Jadeja’s focus in T20 cricket is in restricting the batter. But when there is a little turn on offer, he starts to take on greater responsibilities. That was the case on Friday as he produced his best figures in T20 internationals. As soon as he gets one ball to turn, Jadeja becomes every bit as dangerous as a mystery spinner. Because he has so much control over his craft that he can turn one ball a mile – like the one that went right through Richie Berrington – while ensuring another just skids on straight – like the one that pinned Matthew Cross in front. That one over – the seventh which produced two wickets – set India on their way to the victory they absolutely needed. The mismatch
Scotland only ever tried to attack 46 of the balls they faced. And for all that trouble, they made only 65 runs on top of losing five wickets.India, within the first four overs, attacked 15 balls and scored 45 runs from them. Zero wickets. There. That’s how much of a mismatch this was. Rahul and Rohit Sharma hit eight fours and two sixes in the first 24 balls of the chase and killed the game off in a ridiculous hurry.

Bhargav Bhatt rolls over Odisha for 181

Scorecard
Baroda left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt took six wickets to run through Odisha’s middle order on the first day in Vadodara. Odisha’s Govind Podder made a battling 82 but he had very little support from the rest of the batsmen, with five of the top seven making single-digit scores. Around lunch time, Odisha were at a reasonably comfortable 82 for 2, before a Bhatt double-strike, including the wicket of the in-form Biplab Samantary, pulled them back. Bhatt struck twice in an over soon after leaving Odisha at 105 for 6, and it took a brisk unbeaten 37 from the No. 9 Saurabh Sehgal to take the score to 181. Baroda lost the wicket of opener Saurabh Wakaskar as they reached 34 for 1 by stumps.
Scorecard
Suresh Raina fluffed another chance to press for a place in the Test middle order by falling for 8, but Uttar Pradesh still finished the day on a solid 248 for 4 thanks to a long partnership between Mohammad Kaif and opener Mukul Dagar. Vidarbha removed Tanmay Srivastava in the third over, before Kaif and Dagar put on 195 patient runs for the second wicket. Dagar went on to complete his third century in five matches, while for the third time this Ranji season Kaif failed to reach his hundred despite crossing 80. Vidarbha got some respite towards the end of the day as Sandeep Singh removed both Kaif and Raina, before Shrikant Wagh had Dagar bowled for 116.
Scorecard
Haryana’s batting has been notoriously fragile this season, and they seemed headed for another low total after slipping to 63 for 4 against Maharashtra, but substantial contributions from the lower-middle order lifted them to a middling score. Opener Rahul Dewan was the only one in the top order to resist as Maharashtra’s quicks struck several times early. Yatharth Tomar, playing only his second first-class match and his first since 2010, hit 48 to steady the innings before Amit Mishra, who made a crucial half-century in their win over Delhi earlier this week, chipped in with 35. The top scorer of the innings was Jayant Yadav, with 63, his second first-class half-century.
Scorecard
On a pitch that resembled a lawn, with the only patches of white near the rough on either side, Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar chose to give his batsmen first use of the pitch, despite their batting struggles all season. While it might be perceived as a brave decision, it backfired on the hosts. Karnataka were still searching for their first outright win, and they were presented with what looked like a result-oriented wicket. Delhi weren’t complaining though. Their seamers, led by Parvinder Awana, bundled out the hosts for 192 and ended the day in front despite losing two wickets as the shadows lengthened in Bangalore. A full match report is here.

Hamilton-Brown quits Surrey captaincy

Rory Hamilton-Brown has announced that he will stand down as Surrey captain to focus on his own game

George Dobell10-Aug-2012Rory Hamilton-Brown has resigned as captain of Surrey having struggled to regain equilibrium following the death of close friend and team-mate Tom Maynard. Although Hamilton-Brown has reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing a playing career, he has accepted it will take time to regain the mental and physical fitness required to fulfil one of the more demanding jobs in cricket.Gareth Batty will continue as Surrey captain until the end of the season, with the club making a decision about a longer-term solution in the off-season. Batty and new signing Vikram Solanki will be among the candidates for the role, though Chris Adams, Surrey’s director of cricket, has made no secret of his desire to bring in new faces.Hamilton-Brown’s resignation brings to an end an experiment that was beginning to bear fruit. Just 22 at the time of his appointment in 2010 – the youngest Surrey captain in more than a century – Hamilton-Brown assumed leadership of a team struggling in all formats of the game. While progress was not always smooth, Surrey won the CB40 competition and Championship promotion in 2011 and, with a squad boasting several highly talented young players, looked set for a period of sustained success. Then came the tragic incident in June that claimed the life of Maynard – a young batsman in whom club and country had high hopes – and Hamilton-Brown was given indefinite compassionate leave to come to terms with his grief. While he has taken the first tentative steps towards a first-team return, he has decided that the responsibilities of captaincy are a burden he can do without at this stage of his rehabilitation. Surrey have not won a Championship game in his absence and endured a poor T20 campaign.”I am honoured to have captained Surrey, the county I have played for since I was nine years old,” Hamilton-Brown said. “It has been a privilege to have been in charge of a fantastic group of players and what we achieved together is a great source of pride to me, particularly our unprecedented record of only one defeat in 20 Clydesdale Bank matches.”I am only 24 and would now like to concentrate on my own game and try to achieve ambitions I have in the game by continuing to play well for Surrey.”Adams said: “I would like to thank Rory for everything he has achieved during his three years as captain. Having taken on the captaincy in 2010, winning a Lord’s final and securing promotion to Division One in 2011 were both fantastic achievements. He has undoubted talent and a desire to take his game to the next level. I hope he achieves all his ambitions within the game in the years to come.”Surrey remain in contention to retain the CB40 trophy – they are top of Group B having lost just one of their eight games – but have slipped into relegation trouble in the Championship, losing their most recent match against Durham by an innings.

Henderson to the rescue again

ScorecardRamnaresh Sarwan made 41 on his Leicestershire debut•Associated Press

Leicestershire staged an astonishing fightback against Glamorgan on a dramatic opening day of the new County Championship season at Grace Road. They recovered from the shock of losing two wickets to the first two balls of the game to post a competitive total of 249, with Claude Henderson scoring an unbeaten half-century and Ramnaresh Sarwan making a vital 41 on his Leicestershire debut. Then Matthew Hoggard, Robbie Joseph and Nadeem Malik had Glamorgan reeling with devastating spells as the Welshmen staggered to 25 for 5 in 11 overs at the close of a remarkable day’s cricket.Joseph, making his debut after being released by Kent, struck first with a successful lbw shout against Stewart Walters. In the next over Hoggard dismissed Gareth Rees in similar fashion and then clean bowled Ben Wright.Joseph picked up his second wicket when William Bragg edged to Sarwan at slip and Moises Henriques was caught behind in Malik’s first over, meaning 15 wickets had fallen in the day for 274 runs. The start to the game was one of the most dramatic openings to a season seen on the ground. After putting Leicestershire in to bat on a damp pitch, Glamorgan had them 1 for 3 from three overs.Huw Waters took two wickets with his first two balls, having Greg Smith caught at short leg by Gareth Rees and then pinning Jacques du Toit lbw. He struck again with the fifth ball of his second over when Matt Boyce popped up another catch to Rees at short leg and there seemed no way back for the hosts who finished bottom of the Second Division last season. But a brisk 26 from Josh Cobb, who hit two fours and two sixes, and then some stout and sensible batting from the middle and late order batsmen pulled Leicestershire out of trouble.Sarwan, who had to come in and face the hat-trick delivery from Walters, looked impressive in his 110-ball stay at the crease. He mixed solid defence with some sweetly timed boundaries, six in all, before being trapped lbw by Graham Wagg.Henderson then spearheaded the recovery as he did a year ago in the same fixture, when Leicestershire beat Glamorgan on opening day to claim their only Championship win of the season. He made an unbeaten 80 on that occasion and once again frustrated the Welshmen with another 57 not out. His half-century came off 108 balls and included a six and two fours. He was given excellent support by Ned Eckersley (25), Wayne White (37) and Joseph (29) before Leicestershire’s seamers completed the stunning fightback.

Di Venuto ton rescues Durham

Michael Di Venuto’s 132 held Durham together as the County Championship leaders reached 272 for 7 on the first day against Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street

Scorecard
Michael Di Venuto’s 132 held Durham together as the County Championship leaders reached 272 for 7 on the first day against Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street.On a day when 23 overs were lost to rain only 55 runs had come off the bat at the other end when Di Venuto reached his third century of the season off 139 balls. But with Andre Adams taking four wickets to boost his season tally to 49, Durham were rocking on 197 for 6, prompting Di Venuto to drop anchor in the final session. He had all but survived it when he played back and edged Steven Mullaney to wicketkeeper Chris Read in the penultimate over. With Ben Stokes returning to four-day action in place of the injured Steve Harmison, Durham had opted for the extra batsman and had skipper Phil Mustard going in at number eight. He survived a streaky start to contribute 45 to his stand of 74 with Di Venuto and was still there on 46 at the close. Durham won the toss for the 11th time in 12 championship games and chose to bat, despite the sultry heat providing good conditions for swing bowling.New-ball pair Darren Pattinson and Charlie Shreck posed little threat as Di Venuto and Will Smith put on 54. But Smith made only 13 of those against his former colleagues before lifting Pattinson to long leg.Gordon Muchall survived a big lbw appeal from Pattinson off his first ball, and although he put away several bad balls, notably from Paul Franks, he struggled against Adams, who bowled him for 30. In his next over Adams had Paul Collingwood caught behind for a duck as the ex-England batsman tried to withdraw his bat.Dale Benkenstein contributed only 12 to a fourth-wicket stand of 54 before a thick edge off a forcing back-foot shot was well held by Mullaney at gully. Stokes was shaping to play through mid-wicket when he was adjudged lbw to Franks during an improved spell after tea, then Ian Blackwell edged a drive at Adams and was smartly held by Adam Voges.Mustard survived a difficult chance to Pattinson at mid-on off Shreck on 30, and if he can add a few more he will be confident of success against a team who propose to open the batting with a pair of debutants. One is Karl Turner, who made his Durham Academy debut in 2004 and became a second-team regular before being released at the end of last season. The other is Sam Kelsall, from Stoke, who has been playing for England Under 19s recently.
