Hopes finishes off Tigers at Gabba

BRISBANE, Oct 27 AAP – Queensland all-rounder James Hopes continued his impressive one-day record as the Bulls reined in Tasmania’s batsmen in the ING Cup cricket clash at the Gabba today.

AAP27-Oct-2002BRISBANE, Oct 27 AAP – Queensland all-rounder James Hopes continued his impressive one-day record as the Bulls reined in Tasmania’s batsmen in the ING Cup cricket clash at the Gabba today.Tasmania was bowled out for 174 in the 46th over, with Hopes claiming three wickets from his final five deliveries to finish with 4-34 from 8.5 overs.Hopes was on a hat-trick after dismissing Damien Wright (four) and Xavier Doherty with successive balls and he bowled Adam Griffith for a duck three balls later. The 24-year-old has been a handy addition to the Bulls’ one-day team, taking 16 wickets in last season’s competition.Zimbabwe-raised quick Scott Brant (3-35) started the rot for Tasmania when he claimed the key wicket of Australian all-rounder Shane Watson (eight), who was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe. With opening batsman Michael DiVenuto (five) also failing, the Tigers lacked the top-order spark they needed after being sent in to bat in overcast conditions.Captain Jamie Cox revived the Tigers with an efficient knock of 78 from 91 balls, joining Sean Clingeleffer (24 from 51) in a 66-run stand for the seventh wicket. But Cox’s dismissal to Hopes, swatting a running catch for Nathan Hauritz at long off, left the Tigers in trouble.”We have a history of falling about 20 runs short so, with five guys in the shed and 10 overs left, we decided to have a go,” Cox said.”We did fight pretty hard but, with the lights on and the white ball to face, conditions were pretty difficult.”Off-spinner Hauritz (1-33 from seven overs) made a sound return in his first match in almost two months.Hauritz had been away with the Australian Test and one-day squads in Kenya, Sri Lanka and Sharjah and only returned to Brisbane on Friday morning.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Ezri Konsa post

A number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to Ezri Konsa’s Sunday social media post about teammate Tyrone Mings.

Mings started for England in their European Championships opener against Croatia on the weekend, impressing in a 1-0 win at Wembley.

The 28-year-old, who missed just two games under Dean Smith last season, was England’s third-best performer behind Raheem Sterling and Kalvin Phillips, as per WhoScored, recording a match rating of 7.15/10.

He completed 56 passes, made four interceptions, three clearances and committed zero fouls, with Villa sharing the stats from Mings’ display on Twitter shortly after the full-time whistle in London.

Konsa, on £32,000-a-week in the Midlands, clearly liked what he saw from his club partner and replied to Villa’s official tweet on Mings, simply saying:

“My boy”

Drawn Lincoln practice match fulfils many objectives

As the light dimmed over the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, the final stages of the New Zealand home season began with this draw between Central Districts and a New Zealand Selection XI

Matthew Appleby20-Mar-2001As the light dimmed over the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, the final stages of the New Zealand home season began with this draw between Central Districts and a New Zealand Selection XI.This practice game for CD became something of a Test trial for Shayne O’Connor (match figures 6-32), Lou Vincent (93) and Jacob Oram (15, 31 and 1-28), in what has proved to be a useful undertaking by New Zealand Cricket.Selection XI coach Ashley Ross told CricInfo that the teams “will have largely reached their objectives by tomorrow, with the bowlers having a good bowl and the batsmen all getting a bat.””Sir Richard’s been pleased that they have all been able to show some form,” he continued about the match that has been played in excellent conditions and on a true pitch throughout.Central scored 106/6 today in reply to the Selection XI’s 269/6 declared. They thus finished 37 behind with four second innings wickets intact. The youthful CD team had to contend with an attack consisting of five bowlers with recent Test experience.Missing Craig Spearman (holiday), Mark Douglas (work) and Mathew Sinclair (Test), CD coach Dipak Patel told CricInfo he was “disappointed” David Kelly, Glen Sulzberger and Jacob Oram had failed to make “decent scores on what is a good batting wicket.” He hopes the one-day game tomorrow will “rectify” that one downside on what has been “overall a pretty good exercise.”However, with daylight saving beginning last weekend, the sunset on the horizon brought an early end to the day, and to the season here at the lovely ground named after the great Bert Sutcliffe.

Aston Villa front-runners to sign Buendia

Aston Villa have reportedly jumped ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia this summer.

The Lowdown: Buendia stars for Norwich

The Argentine enjoyed a superb season in the Championship, scoring 15 goals and registering 16 assists and winning the league’s Player of the Season award.

Despite Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League, he has been linked with a move away from Carrow Road this summer, with Villa in contention to snap him up.

The Latest: Villa jump ahead of Arsenal

According to Football Insider, Villa are now ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign the 24-year-old, with the two clubs reportedly going ‘head to head’ for his services.

It is claimed that Villa have made ‘progress’ in their efforts to bring Buendia to Villa Park, with the midfielder potentially being able to leave Norwich for less than £40m.

The Verdict: Superb potential signing

Buendia has the potential to be a fabulous signing for Dean Smith’s side, with his incredible end product demonstrated last season. He has also shown that he can shine in the Premier League, chipping in with seven assists in 2019/20 despite Norwich’s relegation.

The prospect of the 24-year-old joining up with the likes of Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins (23 goals and 17 assists combined this term) is a mouthwatering one, so he could be a significant addition ahead of the new campaign if Villa manage to fend off Arsenal for his signature.

Dav Whatmore relishes the prospect of Pakistan in England

In a country that has endured a winter marred by grating weather, a foot andmouth epidemic, a one-sided Premiership, and some stuttering performances inthe World Cup qualifiers, the cricket fans are still smiling

Dav Whatmore04-May-2001Dav Whatmore
National CoachIn a country that has endured a winter marred by grating weather, a foot andmouth epidemic, a one-sided Premiership, and some stuttering performances inthe World Cup qualifiers, the cricket fans are still smiling. England’scricketers enjoyed a winter of unprecedented success and their supporterswill now be looking forward to a prosperous summer. So far the battle for the Ashes has dominated the back pages, but theprospect of a clash between Pakistan and England is an intriguing one. Inthe one corner there is England, a team who played slow, methodical, determined, and prolonged cricket throughout the winter. A side whoremorsefully ground down their opposition over the first four days of theTests, before making a push for victory on the final one.In the opposite corner is Pakistan, led by the Waqar Younis and coached byPybus, who are the very antithesis of England. The low tempo, sustainedconfrontation is not for them. They come out of the blocks running, eager todismantle the opposition in the most spectacular manner possible. When onsong their prodigiously talented team produces a brand of high intensitycricket that no team in the world can match.Nasser Hussain will be praying that Pakistan don’t play to their potential. On paper, they have a fearsome battery of fast bowlers, most of whom arealso genuine all rounders. Who in the right minds would cherish the prospectof facing Wasim, Waqar, Akhtar, and Razzaq on a damp May wicket?Nevertheless, I expect England to win the two-Test series because they areconfident, mentally strong, and playing to a game plan in tune with theirnatural skills. The batting order typifies their newfound form. The toporder has to ability to compile a big score, but also to recover from a poorstart. The lower order put a high price on their wickets and they aretherefore a very difficult side to bowl out.Their bowling department may not match Pakistan’s for it’s sheer naturaltalent, but it is far more consistent. When they are bowling well they canrun through a side, but, crucially, when they come off the boil they usuallyremain tight and runs are still hard to find, which maintains the pressureon the batsmen.Everyone recognises Darren Gough as a world-class performer. He would playin any international side. The renaissance of Andrew Caddick, however, hasbeen a vital component of their recent success. If he was knocked about twoyears ago his head would invariably drop because of his sagging self belief.Nowadays though he is playing with terrific confidence, appears mentallystronger, and his performances are therefore consistently impressive.England’s biggest weakness at the moment is their spin department. I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael Vaughan was the sole spinner in the side for muchof the season and England employs four fast bowlers. With the slippery Whiteand probing Cork to complement the opening duo they should be able to pilethe pressure onto the Pakistani top order. It should be a great series. No one quite knows how Pakistan will perform, but they looked together in Sharjah and Waqar appeared to be a captain incontrol. If that kind of unity prevails this summer then England will havetheir work cut out to record their fifth consecutive series win.

Ex-NCFC star braced for bids for £30m ace

Former Norwich City star Jon Newsome insists there will be bidders for Max Aarons this summer, in an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern.

The right-back has been in exceptional form for the Canaries this season.

Aarons has made 45 appearances in the Championship, with Norwich comfortably winning the second-tier title.

He has subsequently been linked with a move away; The Independent reports that there is interest from West Ham United and Everton in a potential swoop.

Aarons is just 21 and he has already totted up 130 appearances for the Canaries, even playing in the Premier League last term.

He seems certain to return to the top-flight ahead of the beginning of the 2021/22 season, be it with Norwich or another English club.

Newsome thinks there will be bids for the star and it leaves the club with a dilemma they will have to solve should a big-money bid be tabled.

He told TT: “Max Aarons, the number of games he’s played for such a young lad is amazing and he’s learning his craft.

“He’ll be really, really keen to be playing Premier League football so I expect clubs to sniff around him. Norwich City have got a decision to make.

“They either slam the door in somebody’s face, firmly shut, and we have no conversation or if the numbers are right, will they be tempted? It’s a big, big question.”
