Excellent once again: Tottenham fans loved Vertonghen’s performance against Palace

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur kicked off life in their new stadium with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

It was not the most entertaining of matches truth be told, but it was a very important victory for Tottenham as they returned to third position in the Premier League table.

Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen scored the goals for Spurs, but it was also an impressive defensive performance from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

And the Tottenham fans have been keen to pay tribute to Jan Vertonghen.

According to WhoScored, the centre-back had two shots, a pass success rate of 93% and also won seven aerial duels during his 90 minutes on the field.

There is no question that the Belgium international is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Which team is the dominant force in London right now? Playmaker FC’s Tom Skinner has a very unpopular opinion on the matter. Check it out in the video below…

And it is safe to say that the Tottenham fans absolutely adore the 31-year-old, who has now made 278 appearances for the club in all competitions.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Rangers fans on Twitter were ecstatic to see Lafferty grab a league goal

Kyle Lafferty has had a bit of a tough time on his return to Ibrox this season. The 31-year-old striker had bagged just four goals before yesterday, with his most recent goal coming against Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup in January, and before that his most recent Scottish Premier League goal coming all the way back in late September.

There has been no doubting that Alfredo Morelos is Steven Gerrard’s number one choice up front, and the January signing of Jermain Defoe has only pished Lafferty further down the pecking order. However, when the Northern Irishman came on and scored yesterday it would have given him the much-needed confidence boost that he’s been needing for a while.

The Bluenoses will hope he can put together some kind of run of form now and if he can kick on and grab some goals between now and the end of the season then it will be a welcomed bonus that would relieve some of the goalscoring burden that is so often put on Morelos. However, it won’t be easy to string together goalscoring form, and if it is to happen then the big man will need more than cameo appearances from the bench.

You can read the Gers’ reaction to Lafferty’s strike here:

The Bluenoses loved seeing their big man score and will hope there are few more to come from Lafferty this season.

Time for Unai Emery to hand Denis Suarez his first start

Arsenal have it all to play for in the Europa League this week when they host BATE in their second-leg clash at the Emirates on Thursday evening.

Unai Emery’s charges suffered an embarrassing 0-1 defeat in the Borisov Arena last week in a match that saw the Gunners fail to get their rhythm and momentum going.

Thursday’s encounter is thus a good occasion for the manager to hand new-man Denis Suarez his first start in an Arsenal shirt.

The 25-year-old replaced Sead Kolasinac in the second-half in the match in Belarus and looked a bit more energetic in the time he was on the pitch. It could also be a good time for Emery to give Kolasinac a rest, despite it being a must-win match for the North London club.

Kolasinac has been in solid form this season and has adapted brilliantly to the wing-back position.

But, with Nacho Monreal back in the starting lineup after a long injury layoff, playing Suarez in the left-midfield position might boost Arsenal’s chances of applying a lot of pressure on BATE.

Arsenal host Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday and with fixtures set to become quite congested from now on, the fitness of the players like Kolasinac will become equally important.

With Alexandre Lacazette set to miss the match due to suspension, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will almost definitely start up-front for Arsenal and it could be exciting to see Suarez and him play together.

Suarez’s capabilities will also help Alex Iwobi’s game on the left-wing and it could see Arsenal play with a lot of width and depth, which is exactly the type of game Emery wants his team to play.

Suarez has only made three substitute appearances since joining the Gunners on loan from Barcelona last month and will blast new life into the Arsenal team should he play from the start on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag slams Man Utd for 'mistake' that let Fulham score late winner as he insists Red Devils 'should have won' despite Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw absence

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United made a crucial mistake in the build-up to Fulham's dramatic late winner at Old Trafford on Saturday.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United had cancelled out Calvin Bassey's opener with a strike from Harry Maguire in the 89th minute. But as they pressed for a winner, Fulham had a throw in their defensive half and broke away through Adama Traore, who played in Iwobi to finish and earn the Cottagers all three points in front of a stunned Old Trafford, leaving Ten Hag bemused.

    WHAT TEN HAG SAID

Ten Hag told : "It was a throw-in [for Fulham] in the corner, we had them under pressure and we have one player in the wrong position. As a team we should manage that and make sure everyone is in the right position. We let them escape and it is avoidable. The team showed big character to fight back, we deserved the equaliser and went for the win – we showed big personality and character. It was that mistake. Before that we went for the win and we should have taken our opportunities."

He added: "With the squad we had today we should have won this game. Both halves were slow starts and we should be ready from the first whistle. That's a point of criticism but the team showed big character in both halves."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The result is a bitter blow for United's Champions League hopes. Aston Villa beat Nottingham Forest 4-2 on Saturday and now sit eight points ahead of the Red Devils in fourth. Tottenham have a game in hand on United; if they win it, they will be six clear of ten Hag's men in fifth.

Balogun swapped Arsenal for MonacoMade debut as substituteBooked when trying to win a penaltyGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Monaco were already 3-0 up against Lens when Balogun was introduced with 72 minutes on the clock. Goals from Wilfried Singo, Aleksandr Golovin and Guillermo Maripan had the hosts in cruise control and allowed manager Adi Hutter the luxury of resting Wissam Ben Yedder and sending on Balogun to make his debut following his move from Arsenal.

Balogun was instantly involved in the action, wanting a penalty after rounding goalkeeper Brice Samba. The forward went to ground under the slightest touch but no spot-kick was given and Balogun was handed a yellow card for diving instead. Another sight of goal presented itself after a smart run, but the former Arsenal man dwelt to long on the ball and could only find the side netting.

USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter will be surely glad to see Balogun getting his first minutes of the season following his move from Arsenal. Berhalter has already hailed the transfer a "fabulous move" after seeing him score 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season for Reims. Meanwhile, Balogun has explained he wanted to move out of his comfort zone in a bid to develop his game. The forward will be aiming to force his way into the starting XI at Monaco, with Saturday's win keeping them top of the table heading into the international break with 10 points from their first four games.

GOAL'S RATING

Folarin Balogun (5/10):

Looked eager to make an impact after coming off the bench in the second half, perhaps too eager, as he went to ground far too easily in a bid to win a penalty. Looked lively enough but the game had already been won by the time he came on and he had little time to really make an impact for his new team.

Liverpool player ratings vs Man City: Mohamed Salah fades as Reds' defence crumbles

The Reds' top-four hopes took yet another blow as City came from behind to batter Jurgen Klopp's side at the Etihad Stadium

Liverpool's fading hopes of securing Champions League qualification for next season suffered yet another blow as they were beaten 4-1 by a rampant Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds led briefly in the first half thanks to Mohamed Salah's clinical finish, but City levelled through Julian Alvarez, the stand-in for the injured Erling Haaland, before roaring away from their rivals after the break.

Kevin De Bruyne scored within a minute of the restart, and Ilkay Gundogan added another soon after, as Liverpool's fragile defence crumbled once more, leaving Jurgen Klopp bewildered.

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Alisson Becker (6/10):

Left exposed by the team in front of him. He's too good for them at the moment.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10):

Lovely ball to create the opening goal. Had a hard time defensively against the excellent Grealish. Unlucky for the third goal but was alarmingly sloppy on other occasions.

Ibrahima Konate (4/10):

Played like a bag of nerves and looked bewildered by City's speed and movement.

Virgil van Dijk (4/10):

Beaten too easily for the equaliser, and City exploited the Reds' defensive line time and again.

Andy Robertson (4/10):

Caught out pushing up for City's first two goals and was wasteful in some good attacking positions.

Fabinho (4/10):

Played on the edge in terms of fouls in the first half, and looked a yard off the pace throughout.

Jordan Henderson (4/10):

Found wanting in terms of composure, legs and quality on the ball.

Harvey Elliott (4/10):

In and out, and too safe at times with his passing. Couldn't get near City's midfield stars.

Mohamed Salah (5/10):

Ice-cool finish to open the scoring but should have set Jota up to make it 2-0 before City levelled. Faded before being subbed.

Cody Gakpo (5/10):

Showed a bit of fight at least, and a few touches of class. Terrible dive to try and win a penalty.

Diogo Jota (5/10):

Great run and set for the opener, but he faded as quickly as Liverpool did.

Kostas Tsimikas (5/10):

On with the game lost. His main action in this game came when Pep Guardiola celebrated in his face after the equaliser. The Greek kept his composure admirably, there.

Roberto Firmino (5/10):

No impact.

Darwin Nunez (5/10):

Can't have been fit, else he'd have been on much sooner than he was.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (5/10):

Was no worse than anyone else, but his presence here tells you just how badly this season has gone for Liverpool.

James Milner (N/A):

On late. May well feel like he is too old for all this.

Jurgen Klopp (5/10):

What has happened to his team?! Made his subs too late.

Mane's red, Mendy's injury & the key moments in Manchester City’s title triumph

Pep Guardiola's side have been crowned Premier League champions and these are 10 key moments that helped them get there

GettySterling strikes late to fix Pep's 'worries'

It may seem hard to believe now but back at the start of the season Pep Guardiola admitted he was "worried" about his side's failings in front of goal. Less than 24 hours later Raheem Sterling popped up with one of the scrappiest goals of the season, in the 97th minute at Bournemouth, to spark wild celebrations in the away end as City snatched a late winner.

After not looking overly impressive in their first two games of the season, this was a chaotic end to their third, with Sterling sent off for his celebration and Sergio Aguero intervening as police man-handled fans who had jumped onto the pitch.

At the time, it was suggested that Sterling’s scuffed effort would be a turning point in the season, or would at least get them through until they signed Alexis Sanchez in the days that followed…

AdvertisementGettySadio Mane's red card derails Liverpool

One of the most needlessly controversial moments of the season, but one which set City on their way in the league, and seriously derailed Liverpool at the same time.

Mane, although he didn’t mean to do it, knocked out Ederson by kicking him in the face, so his red card was justified. City were leading 1-0 at the time but the space between Nicolas Otamendi at left centre-back and Benjamin Mendy at left-back was still being exploited by the Reds – until they went down to 10 men.

Jurgen Klopp’s side then simply folded, with City flowing through them at will. It certainly seemed that Sterling’s goal at Bournemouth had sparked them into life in front of goal, even if Alexis’ planned move had fallen through. City won this one 5-0, and then scored 19 in their next four Premier League games.

GettyMendy injury forces tactical rethink

Benjamin Mendy was one of City’s fundamental summer signings, designed to come in and provide the kind of dynamic attacking presence down the left-hand side that was simply lacking last year; the kind of thing Kyle Walker has been doing on the right-hand side all season.

The Frenchman looked impressive in his first few performances, particularly with his superb low crosses from the left, but he got himself in a mess trying to tackle Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend back in September, and despite walking from the pitch, it was later confirmed that he would miss nine months with a serious knee ligament injury.

City hadn’t signed another left-back during the summer and this was seen as one of the worst-case scenarios, especially ahead of a key game at Chelsea. Yet Guardiola found the answer and changed City’s approach.

He converted Fabian Delph into a left-back who was comfortable slotting back into midfield when City had the ball, and tasked Leroy Sane, who had struggled for minutes at the start of the season, with providing City’s width on the left, with David Silva getting into the half spaces to provide an assist or goal.

The plan clearly worked and Mendy's injury, as cruel as it was, has hardly hampered the Blues.

GettyCity prove their mettle at Chelsea

City may have only scored the one goal at Stamford Bridge but it was arguably the most important of their season. Guardiola’s men were clearly in fine form but they went to west London only 12 months on from when things had fallen apart after a fine start to the 2016-17 season, and many were wondering if City were the real deal, or would simply suffer the same old problems. Kevin De Bruyne provided the answer.

City dominated the champions with an impressive, confident performance, and the key moment was a precise strike from their Belgian midfielder, who had already began to show signs that he could become the pivotal player in this increasingly fine season.

City celebrated wildly in the dressing room and victory gave them the belief to go and implement their game plan at some of the toughest grounds in England and beyond.

West Indies Women narrowed the gap down to four points between themselves and first-place Australia in the ICC Women’s Championship points table after a 57-run win over South Africa Women in East London. The result follows a 15-run win by West Indies at the same venue on February 24 and they’ll seek a series sweep in the final ODI on Monday.West Indies were 25 for 2 at the eight-over mark after electing to bat when captain Stafanie Taylor (79) and Deandra Dottin (61) teamed up for a 135-run stand, four short of equaling the West Indies Women’s record mark for a third-wicket partnership set by Juliana Nero and Pamela Lavine against Ireland at the 2005 Women’s World Cup. It’s also the sixth-highest partnership overall in West Indies Women’s ODIs and the fifth century stand between Taylor and Dottin in ODIs.The stand ended on the first ball of the 32nd over when Taylor was runout and Dottin perished not long after to end the 34th over. Dottin was the first wicket on the day for 20-year-old legspinner Suné Luus, who finished with 3 for 34 as West Indies were eventually bowled out in the last over for 232.South Africa made a bright start to the chase, reaching 85 for 1 in the 22nd over before Shaquana Quintyne sparked a slide by taking the wickets of captain Mignon du Preez and Marizanne Kapp two overs apart. South Africa’s hopes rested on opener Trisha Chetty to carry her team through but she was the fifth wicket to fall for 51, bowled by Anisa Mohammed. South Africa then lost their last five wickets for 40 runs with Hayley Matthews spinning out the tail to end South Africa’s reply for 175 in 45.3 overs.
