Six Canadians in Americas U19 squad

Canada allrounder Nikhil Dutta has been named in a 14-man ICC Americas U19 squad that will take part in the WICB Regional U19 50-over competition in Guyana next month

Peter Della Penna26-Jul-2014Canada allrounder Nikhil Dutta has been named as part of a 14-man ICC Americas U19 squad that will take part in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional U19 50-over competition which takes place in Guyana from August 4-15. This will be the third time an ICC Americas composite team featuring players from Canada, Bermuda and the USA will be taking part in the WICB U19 tournament.Dutta was part of the ICC Americas U19 team in 2012 but was omitted in 2013, despite sweeping honors for Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Tournament MVP of the 2013 ICC Americas U19 championship, in order to be available for selection for the Canada senior team’s WCL Championship and Intercontinental Cup contests last August. He made his ODI debut in March 2013 against Kenya in the UAE. Dutta is one of six Canada players in the ICC Americas squad, including three others who return from the 2013 ICC Americas team: Abraash Khan, Farhan Malik and Armaan Kapoor.Bermuda’s Tre Manders and Delray Rawlins are also returning to the ICC Americas U19 team from last year and are two of four players chosen from the island. Manders and Rawlins have been promising prospects for the last several years. Manders made his senior team debut as an 18-year-old for Bermuda at the ICC Americas Division One T20 championship in Florida in March 2013. He scored 64 at number three in his 50-over debut in a win over Italy two months later at ICC WCL Division Three in Bermuda and opened the batting in November at the 2013 World T20 Qualifier in the UAE.Left-arm orthodox spinner Rawlins played against USA in a series of warm-up matches in March 2013 before making his official senior team debut that May at age 15 against USA at ICC WCL Division Three in Bermuda. He took 1 for 39 in a solid performance that was part of a five-wicket win, Bermuda’s first over USA in a live contest since 2005.Like Bermuda, USA also have four representatives in the squad. Among them is Keifer Phill, the 2014 Wingate Award winner as the most outstanding senior in the New York PSAL (Public Schools Athletic League) high school cricket competition. The selection is a homecoming of sorts for Phill and fellow USA player Trevis Ross. Both are originally from Guyana and developed much of their cricket there before migrating to New York City. The coaching staff will be led by ICC Americas High Performance Consultant Tom Evans. An Australian native, Evans joined the ICC Americas Office last year after spending three years as the ICC East Asia-Pacific Regional Development Officer and has previous experience with Cricket Victoria. One coach each from the three countries will also be part of the coaching staff: Canada’s Errol Barrow, Bermuda’s Allan Douglas and USA’s Linden Fraser.”This is very much a coach development initiative as it is a player one,” Evans told ESPNcricinfo. The squad will arrive in Georgetown on August 1 before attending WICB development seminars on August 2 and a training session on August 3 before the team’s first match against Trinidad & Tobago U19 at Demerara Cricket Club on August 4. ICC Americas will play a total of six group games. Last year’s ICC Americas U19 squad had a respectable showing in the WICB U19 tournament, defeating Leeward Islands by three wickets and scoring 209 in a chase against Windward Islands that ended in a tie.ICC Americas U19 squad: Nikhil Dutta, Aniket Joshi, Armaan Kapoor, Abraash Khan, Farham Malik, Arjun Parikh (Canada); Onias Bascome, Tre Manders, Delray Rawlins, Micah Simons (Bermuda); Vibhav Altekar, Arsh Buch, Keifer Phill, Trevis Ross (USA).

Butterworth leads Tasmania to draw

ScorecardThe eighth wicket pair of Xavier Doherty and Luke Butterworth batted for 48 overs to secure a draw•Getty Images

Victoria’s press for a second win in the tournament was shut out by Luke Butterworth’s third first-class century as Tasmania salvaged a draw in Melbourne.Butterworth began the day on 6 and his side was still 407 runs in arrears. He displayed remarkable patience and carried his bat through the day, refusing to provide any opportunity for the Bushrangers to orchestrate a turnaround. Tim Paine, the Tigers’ captain, was equally stoic in his 158-ball vigil for 44 as only two wickets fell in the entire day’s play. The Bushrangers’ only hope came when Paine was run-out and Ben Hilfenhaus bagged a duck, but the wobble was remedied as Xavier Doherty lasted 139 balls for his 20 and his 70-run stand for the eighth wicket with Butterworth lasted 48 overs to shut Victoria outBoth teams lag in the bottom half of the points table with the Tigers on 16 from nine games played and the Bushrangers with 10.

Ashar Zaidi, the Karachi-born allrounder, has signed a two-year contract with Sussex. Zaidi appeared in two Championship matches for the county last season, having played in the Lancashire League since leaving Pakistan. He has a British passport and will provide Sussex with a spin option next season, after the release of Monty Panesar.Zaidi wrote to several counties asking for a trial, having impressed during three seasons with Accrington. He scored an unbeaten 192 and took six wickets after being invited to play for the Sussex 2nd XI and then added 62 runs in two innings to go with six wickets during Division One games against Yorkshire and Durham.”It is an honour to sign for Sussex and this is a really big achievement for me, especially after a few years’ break from the pro game,” Zaidi said. “I’m really grateful for the chance that they have given me.”I’ll be aiming to justify that chance over the next couple of seasons. I’m hoping for enough opportunities to perform, and to open my chances for the future.”The 32-year-old made his debut for Islamabad in 1999, playing regularly in Pakistan’s domestic competitions until 2009, during which time he was also picked for Pakistan A. He has 11 first-class hundreds and a batting average of 38.26 and his left-arm spin will come in useful at Sussex, where Will Beer, the 25-year-old legspinner, was left as the senior slow bowler after Panesar’s departure. Zaidi has also recently turned out for Gazi Tank in the Dhaka Premier Division.Sussex’s captain, Ed Joyce, said: “Ash fitted into the squad really well and impressed everyone with his canny left-arm spin and attractive strokeplay. He will hopefully fulfil the spin role for us in four-day cricket while possibly also allowing us to play an extra seamer when the conditions suit.”He is also a very capable one-day cricketer as seen by his recent performances in the Dhaka Premier League and we’re hopeful he can play a big role for us in both the shorter formats.”

CCS demoted after arriving late to match

Cricket Coaching School were demoted from Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for arriving late to their match against Brothers Union on October 8

Mohammad Isam24-Oct-2013Cricket Coaching School has been demoted from the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for arriving late for their match against Brothers Union on October 8 . They will play First Division Cricket League next season, and all points scored against them or by them will be removed from consideration as had happened last season when Surjo Tarun were relegated for a similar reason. They were reportedly were stuck in a traffic jam on Jatrabari road while en route to Fatullah Cricket Stadium from Kalabaga. According to match referee Samiur Rahman, who was travelling with the team on the 20km journey, a lorry had collapsed on the other side of road, approximately 10km from the ground, forcing one lane to be closed and a collision between two buses caused more delay.CCS reached the ground ten minutes before the toss, but about 45 minutes after their scheduled arrival time. The match referee asked for a delayed start, because a provision for a 30-minute grace period had been added to the by-laws because of the Surjo Tarun incident last year – they had arrived late to BKSP ground and were demoted to the First Division Cricket League. But Brothers Union refused to take part in the toss and boycotted the match. The tournament was closed for Eid holidays but, on Wednesday, the league’s organisers Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, who were investigating the matter, announced the verdict and said it was taken according to the tournament’s rules. The Dhaka Premier League will resume on October 27 and CCS’s demotion means that only one other team will face relegation this season. Currently, Khelaghar and 17-time champions Abahani are at the bottom of the table, with one win each, but since Abahani’s win was against CCS, those points will be taken away, leaving them winless.

Injured Amla in doubt for third ODI

Hashim Amla is in severe doubt for the third ODI against Sri Lanka after sustaining a grade one tear to his left groin muscle, while fielding during the second match in Colombo. He did not bat on Tuesday after leaving the field in the 43rd over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Amla also missed the first match with muscles spasms in his neck.Fielding at fine leg, Amla pursued a ball off Dinesh Chandimal’s blade, and in his efforts to reel it in, leapt and fell hard on his left knee. He did not rise without help thereafter, and after receiving treatment on the boundary line, was helped gingerly back to the pavilion by a member of the team’s medical staff and a team-mate.”Injuries of this nature usually take three to seven days to recover, but he will receive intensive treatment and rehab in the coming days to give him the best possible chance of being ready for the third or fourth ODI in Kandy this week,” Mossajee said.South Africa are also missing Amla’s opening partner and regular captain Graeme Smith, due to injury, while spearhead Dale Steyn was also ruled out for the tour, as he recovers fully from a side strain.Sri Lanka meanwhile will have captain Angelo Mathews back for the remaining ODIs, after he completed his suspension for a slow over rate in the West Indies. The hosts have their own injury worry, with Lahiru Thirimanne nursing a sore thumb after being hit there during the second match, but is not expected to miss a game. The third ODI will be played in Pallekele on Friday, and the fourth on Sunday at the same venue. South Africa are 2-0 down in the series.

Red-hot MI go third after Boult and Rohit blow SRH away

Rohit scored his second straight half-century to give MI their fourth straight win

Knight: Klaasen batting far too low for SRH

Last week, Mumbai Indians (MI) had straightjacketed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters on an atypically slow surface at the Wankhede Stadium. On Wednesday, they did the same in the reverse fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, cantering to a seven-wicket win after keeping SRH to 143 for 8.Getting to that total was an achievement for SRH after they had slumped to 35 for 5, with Heinrich Klaasen hauling them to something like respectability with a superb 71 off 44 balls. Moderately respectable as the total may have been, it was far from enough to put pressure on MI, who raced to victory with 26 balls remaining, with Rohit Sharma continuing his return to form with a second successive half-century.Related

  • 'There are times when you have to rejig your attitude' but SRH haven't done that

  • Add a dash of Boult to a slice of Bumrah – the recipe for MI's turnaround

  • Ishan Kishan walks but Ultra Edge shows no edge

The defining performances of the match came from Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, who picked up two new-ball wickets each as SRH slumped to the lowest powerplay score of the season, 24 for 4. They were in danger of collapsing to a double-digit total when they lost their fifth wicket in the ninth over, but Klaasen and Impact Player Abhinav Manohar ensured that didn’t happen, putting on 99 for the sixth wicket in 63 balls. The damage had already been done, though, as 144 proved to be no challenge at all for an MI team that seems to be building ominous momentum after the customary slow start to their season. After winning just one of their first five games of IPL 2025, they have now won four out of four.SRH, meanwhile, are second from bottom with just two wins in eight games. They took a net run-rate hit too; theirs is now -1.361, only marginally better than bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) -1.392.

Boult and Chahar set the game up

The early exchanges set the tone, with both Chahar and Boult swinging the new ball while also benefitting from the ball stopping on the surface. Conditions still weren’t as tricky as SRH’s top-order slump made them look, though; both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were caught while going hard at the ball, slicing shots they were early on, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped a drive to mid-on.The defining moment of SRH’s top-order collapse, however, was the wicket of Ishan Kishan, who was out to a leg-side strangle for the second time this season. He began walking even though no MI player made a genuine appeal, and Ultra Edge proceeded to rub more salt in SRH’s wounds, showing no spike as ball passed bat.1:28

Aaron and Knight stumped by Kishan’s ‘bizarre’ dismissal

Klaasen keeps SRH afloat

When Hardik Pandya made it 35 for 5 with an offcutter-bouncer that got big on Aniket Verma, SRH had no option but to make early use of their Impact Player and bring on an extra batter, Manohar. It was Klaasen who did all the heavy lifting, though, particularly early on in the sixth-wicket partnership. Left-arm wristspinner Vignesh Puthur helped him spark the innings to life with a series of long-hops in the tenth over, and Klaasen helped himself to a six and two fours. Fifteen came off that over, and 16 off the next, bowled by Hardik.Klaasen went on to play a number of sensational shots – none better than a reverse-scooped six off Jasprit Bumrah in the 19th over – but thanks to SRH’s circumstances, his innings was necessarily one of restraint, as a control percentage of 86 suggested. The risks he took were measured ones, off marginal errors in line and length from MI’s bowlers. That he still finished with a 160-plus strike rate was a testament to his quality, with Manohar’s 43 off 37 balls and the scores of SRH’s other batters putting his innings in context.Mitchell Santner, varying his pace and seam orientation cleverly while keeping the stumps in play as much as possible, made the best of SRH’s self-imposed restraint, conceding just 19 runs – and just one four – in his four overs.Klaasen and Manohar gave SRH the push they needed at the death, as 35 came from overs 17 to 19. But the finish was muted. Bumrah dismissed Klaasen with a full-toss off the last ball of the 19th, and Boult came back to end the innings with a double-wicket 20th.One of them was another unusual dismissal, a rare hit-wicket. He sneaked a yorker past Manohar and hit the stumps, but the batter, sitting deep in his crease, had already disturbed the stumps while trying to bring his bat down to keep the ball out.1:43

Is Rohit Sharma well and truly back?

Rohit bosses the chase

SRH had replaced Mohammed Shami – who had endured a difficult season, picking up just five wickets in seven games at 52.20 while conceding 10.87 runs per over – with Jaydev Unadkat, and the left-arm quick marked his return with an early wicket, getting Ryan Rickelton caught-and-bowled in the second over of MI’s chase with another ball that stopped on the surface. But whether because of dew or other reasons, the ball in general seemed to come on to the bat much better during the second innings. Even Pat Cummins’ offcutter into the pitch, such a potent weapon on slow surfaces, sat up to be hit here, with Rohit and Will Jacks pulling him for a six each in a 17-run third over. That set the tone for the rest of the powerplay, with MI scoring 56 for 1 in this phase, the highlight an effortless six over long-off from Rohit off Unadkat, with arms at full extension.Rohit came into this game having improved his scores with each innings, his first seven visits to the crease bringing him 0, 8, 13, 17, 18, 26 and 76*. He seemed on course to keep that sequence going, but fell against the run of play on 70, chipping an Eshan Malinga yorker to midwicket in the 15th over.MI only needed 14 off 32 at that point, though, and Suryakumar Yadav was already batting on 26, picking his spots and targeting them clinically. He finished the game with a flurry of boundaries, to end it unbeaten on 40 off just 19 balls. The final act of the match summed up the contest: a flat Suryakumar pull off Zeeshan Ansari could have been caught at deep square leg, only for Reddy to overrun the ball and let it run away to the boundary.

Mismatch looms in low-key series

There’s little buzz in the build-up to the series, but it provides New Zealand the chance to claw back some respect and South Africa the opportunity to work on their ODI strategies

Big Picture You can tell a lot about a place by simply browsing through its newspapers. A quick glance at the local media in South Africa will reveal that three-match ODI series against New Zealand is almost not happening. The back page has been taken over by football’s African Nations’ Cup which is being hosted in South Africa and begins on the same day as the first ODI. The inside pages are a mixture of Super Rugby previews, Australian Open action and look ahead to the Test series against Pakistan. Only a few lines have been set aside for the New Zealand contest and most will say, deservedly so given the mis-match of the Test series.New Zealand’s media is also not taking the series too seriously. The two newspaper journalists and one radio reporter who covered the Tests have left South African shores. their parting words were that they would return home to concentrate on the upcoming England series and would only keep this contest in the very periphery of their vision.Even if it is of little interest, the series will be of some use to both participating sides. For New Zealand, it is an opportunity to claw back some respect after they were humiliated in the Tests. They are still without some of their key players but at least look a more capable unit in this format than the longer ones. Specialists such as Kyle Mills, Rob Nicol and Grant Elliott have been brought in to bolster their ranks and New Zealand will hope to compete and maybe even spring a surprise or two.South Africa will see this as phase 1 in the long-term preparations for the 2015 World Cup. Although two years away, South Africa’s 2013 schedule means they can focus this period on fifty-over cricket. They played 13 ODIs in 2012 and could play as many as ten more this year, depending on how far they go in the Champions Trophy. Winning that competition will go a long way to ensure the chokers label starts peeling off and coming with ways to win that start in this series.Form guide (most recent first, completed matches only)
South Africa: WLLWW
New Zealand: LLLLLIn the spotlightIt’s tough to keep a proper eye on a coach but Gary Kirsten’s strategies will be under the microscope as he looks to create an ODI unit that win ICC silverware. Kirsten has earmarked 2013 as an important period for ODI development in a similar way to how 2012 was identified as the time for the Test team to shine. The success in the longest format has come through consistency and a solid team culture which Kirsten said will take longer to embed in the limited-overs side. His first task is to find the right combinations, then to ensure the continually indecisive AB de Villiers is comfortable in his role as captain and lastly, to get the tactics right. In between that and managing workload ahead of the Pakistan series, Kirsten has his plate overflowing for the next week. After an inept show with the bat in the Tests, Martin Guptill returns to the white-ball game with a point to prove. He has already had success in the Twenty20 series where his unbeaten century singlehandedly levelled the series for New Zealand and his capability in the shorter forms is much lauded. His tendency in Tests to hang his bat out to dry gets shelved in limited-overs where he plays with freedom and finesse. Good performances in the three ODIs won’t stop the questions about his ability against the red ball but it may buy him some time.Team news: A new wicketkeeper in Quinton de Kock means that de Villiers will be free from the glovework in this series. De Kock batted at No. 3 in the Twenty20s but came in lower in this format, although South Africa’s batting line-up will remain flexible. Colin Ingram could find himself back in the starting XI with Farhaan Behardien likely to make his ODI debut and both will compete with Ryan McLaren, depending on whether South Africa want an allrounder. Robin Peterson will do the spinning duties while any combination of two of the four quicks will play.South Africa: (probable) 1 Graeme Smith 2 Hashim Amla 3 Faf du Plessis 4 AB de Villiers (capt) 5 Quinton de Kock (wk), 6 and 7 Colin Ingram/Farhaan Behardien/Ryan McLaren 8 Robin Peterson, 9, 10 and 11 Dale Steyn/Morne Morkel/Lonwabo Tsotsobe/Rory KleinveldtGuptill and Nicol should open the batting with Brendon McCullum at No.3. Williamson will have to move up a spot because of Ross Taylor’s absence. James Franklin should have recovered from the hamstring injury which ruled him out of the Port Elizabeth Test. The allrounder’s spot will be decided between Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham and Elliott while one of Neil Wagner or Mitchell McClenaghan could make their ODI debuts.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Rob Nicol 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 James Franklin, 6 BJ Watling, 7 Colin Munro/Jimmy Neesham/Grant Elliott 8 Nathan McCullum, 9, 10 and 11 Kyle Mills/Neil Wagner/Mitchell McClenaghanStats and Trivia: Despite last playing an ODI in September, South Africa are currently the No.1 ranked ODI team, one point ahead of England. New Zealand are ranked ninth. Paarl, which is one of South Africa’s smaller grounds, is hosting its second ODI in as many summers as part of the drive to spread the game. Last January, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 43 at this venue, chasing 302 for victory. New Zealand’s are without their top-ranked batsmen Ross Taylor (No.18 overall) and bowler Tim Southee (No.15) because of mismanagement and injury respectively. South Africa’s highest places batsman on the rankings is Hashim Amla (No.1) and their best bowler is Lonwabo Tsotsobe (No.4). Both are in the squad. Quotes:”For them, the change of format will be quite refreshing. New Zealand have always done well in World Cups, which means their very good at white-ball cricket as a unit. It will be a closer series.”
“I’m going to bat at No. 5. That will allow the aggressive guys up front followed by guys who know how to build an innings at 3 and 4.”
