Leeds: Illan Meslier compared to Iker Casillas

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has compared Illan Meslier to Iker Casillas, in terms of the career he could end up enjoying.

The Whites have enjoyed an excellent season back in the Premier League, with numerous individuals performing impressively.

The likes of Stuart Dallas, Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha all stand out, in that respect, but Meslier is another who has been an influential figure.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has been a model of consistently between the sticks, playing with a maturity beyond his years and thriving with the ball at his feet too, enjoying a 78 percent pass completion rate in the league this season.

Martyn heaps praise on Meslier

Speaking to Leeds United News about Meslier, ex-England international Martyn tipped him to have similar success to former Real Madrid and Spain legend Casillas:

“Look at Iker Casillas at Real Madrid, he got into the team at an early age and look at the career he had. It is probably good for France going forward because he’s starting so young.

“Imagine how good he will be when gets to his late twenties, he might be on 300 or 400 games by then. With experience comes a better player.

“I think he has had a great season personally – but I don’t think I could look back on a season of mine where I haven’t made a mistake.”

Transfer Tavern take

It is certainly massive praise from Martyn, but it is understandable to see the comparisons, considering Meslier is already flourishing at such a young age.

In fairness, Casillas was already playing in a Champions League final at a similar age, suggesting he was on another level still, but the Leeds hero has incredible potential and has been described as ‘fearsome’ by Tony Cascarino recently, praise which is evidenced by the fact he has missed just one league fixture this term and made the second-most saves in the league.

For now, he just needs to continue to shine for the Whites, adding to his 43 total appearances, but he looks like a future France No.1 in-waiting.

In other news, Leeds have been linked with a move for a hugely exciting winger – find out who it is here.

Howe is not keen on rebuild job at Celtic

Speaking exclusively to Transfer Tavern, Peterborough director of football Barry Fry believes the rebuild job needed at Celtic may be putting off Eddie Howe.

Celtic fell miles behind rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race this season and crashed out of the Europa League in extremely disappointing fashion.

Captain Scott Brown, who has played a big part in the Bhoys’ dominance of Scottish football, is also set to leave the club this summer to join Aberdeen in a player-coach role after spending 14 years at Celtic Park.

It points to Celtic needing a massive revamp and someone to obviously oversee it, which is where Howe comes in. According to BBC Sport, the opportunity to be Neil Lennon’s permanent successor is his if he wants it.

However, the former Bournemouth manager is yet to make a decision, leading Fry to believe that the work that needs to be done at the Glasgow club is detracting him.

On Howe leaving Celtic waiting, the Peterborough director of football told TT:

“He’ll have to do a lot of work, because Celtic on and off the field are in a little bit of disarray at the minute. You know what I mean? There’s a lot of players unhappy. I think there’ll be a lot of comings and goings at Celtic in the summer and I’m not sure that’s Eddie Howe’s thing. I think he’ll want a Premier League job to be quite honest.”

As well as Celtic, Crystal Palace are also said to be interested in hiring Howe this summer, with Roy Hodgson’s contract set to expire.

Sunderland: Who is Benji Kimpioka?

As Benji Kimpioka wheeled away after scoring in the 90th minute to rescue a draw with Coventry in 2019, it felt like a landmark moment.

11 months on from when Josh Maja had been sold, a member of Sunderland’s academy was scoring goals again.

Unfortunately for the 21-year-old, he has not scored for the senior team in league action since.

Chances have been hard to come by for Kimpioka, a young talent who swapped Swedish shores for the north-east of England in 2016.

It was in Scandinavia where he learned the game, but it’s at Sunderland where he’s been developed and tailored.

That being said, it has not been an easy ride for the striker, someone who has struggled to make a sufficient impression under both Jack Ross and Phil Parkinson.

Ross was the man to give him his senior debut but he’s not kicked on and has also had his troubles with injury.

Speaking in October 2018, just over a year before he scored his first league goal, Ross commented: “He’s an enigma at times. He’s got really good attributes. It’s just about trying to piece it all together.”

Indeed, not a single manager has been able to piece them together until recently. Kimpioka has been busy making a big impression for Elliott Dickman’s U23s but his season hasn’t been without its setbacks.

The talented forward didn’t even have a club at the beginning of the term. He was out of contract with the Black Cats and even went back to his native Sweden to train with his former club, IK Sirius.

He eventually penned new terms at the Stadium of Light in October and immediately hit the ground running, scoring four goals in five Premier League 2 outings.

A hamstring injury in November proved another setback, but we’re starting to see signs of a revival. He was among the substitutes bench for the EFL Trophy final at Wembley just over a week ago which clearly shows Lee Johnson has him on his radar.

The arrival of Ross Stewart has damaged the potential of further senior minutes but with Will Grigg out on loan, there is a spot in the first-team with Kimpioka’s name on it.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-sunderland-news-and-gossip” title=” Latest Sunderland news and gossip!”]

If he continues to score with great regularity for the U23s, there’s no reason he can’t make an impression at first team level. After all, Johnson has already handed minutes to the likes of Dan Neil and Ollie Younger.

Could Kimpioka be the next in line? You should hope so. The forward has proven he can hit the back of the net this season and Sunderland are surely done with Grigg.

Therefore, the youngster should be unleashed next season instead.

Saints missed out big on Jamal Musiala

Southampton fans may be surprised to hear that Jamal Musiala was once on trial with the South Coast club as a youngster, before being snatched up by Chelsea, and with the 18-year-old now an established first-team player at Bayern Munich, the Saints will desperately rue not being able to keep hold of him.

Hampshire Live journalist Tom Leach revealed in a recent article that the youngster spent a short time at Southampton’s academy, reportedly scoring double figures in one game, before moving to Chelsea as his family relocated to London.

Although his time at Staplewood was brief, Southampton will definitely regret not being able to keep hold of him for the long-term, as after eight years with Chelsea he would move back to Germany – where he was born – to join Bayern Munich.

Musiala has gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular with the current Champions League holders, despite only turning 18 in late February.

The winger has made 27 appearances in total for Hans-Dieter Flick’s side, in which he has scored four goals.

One of those goals came in the Champions League win against Lazio in February when he became the youngest English scorer in the competition’s history, although he has since pledged his international future to Germany.

Musiala’s former coach Andrew Martin was full of praise for him earlier in the season, saying:

“Technically outstanding, very skilful, and a player who can score all types of goals, inside and outside the box.”

Therefore, it is a big shame that Southampton were not able to keep hold of Musiala for longer, as he is now valued at £21.6 million by Transfermarkt, and he looks destined for a big future with Bayern Munich.

Leeds dodged a bullet in mooted Bielsa target Harry Wilson

Leeds United were linked with a plethora of players during the summer, ranging from potential Ben White replacements to strikers that could maybe usurp Patrick Bamford.

And to be fair to the Premier League newcomers, they did some smart pieces of business, so much so that they avoided an absolute financial catastrophe along the way.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reported at the end of August that the Whites were keen admirers of Liverpool outcast Harry Wilson, who the defending champions wanted around £20m for.

He is a player that Leeds director of football Victor Orta is said to rate “very highly,” as per Phil Hay at The Athletic.

The 23-year-old Welshman had no permanent suitors at that jaw-dropping price, which is hardly a surprise, and has now since gone out on loan to the Championship once again.

You get the feeling that he just isn’t going to make it in the big-time just yet as his switch to Cardiff is his fifth temporary spell away from Anfield since 2015, and his third in the English second-flight.

It is true that his spell in the Welsh capital is going to plan, he has contributed two goals and two assists in eight starts whilst also averaging 2.4 key passes, two shots and 0.8 dribbles per game playing primarily as a right-winger or through the middle, via WhoScored.

However, United need to make the £15m investment in Helder Costa work, on top of the obvious value that Jack Harrison holds as the Yorkshiremen can sign him permanently for a fraction of Wilson’s mooted fee at £10m.

Wilson has also continued to feature on the international stage, leading to former Wales star Dave Edwards lauding the speedster as “unplayable at times.”

Although, the Elland Road tenants have added further depth in wide areas, signing Ian Poveda in January and then Raphinha this summer. It very much would be hard to foresee where a player like Wilson would fit in under Marcelo Bielsa.

Orta dodged an almighty bullet here.
