Spurs fans mock Roberto after West Ham horror show

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans mocked West Ham United goalkeeper Roberto as they won their first away game since January on Saturday.

Spurs won 3-2 at the London Stadium in Jose Mourinho’s first game as manager, with Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane all on the scoresheet.

Goals from Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna gave Hammers fans hope that a comeback could be on but, ultimately, Spurs took all three points.

And a number of fans took to Twitter to troll Roberto throughout the game, as he endured a day to forget.

The Spanish goalkeeper was arguably at fault for Son’s first goal, which may have zipped past him but appeared relatively stoppable, while he also appeared to dive past Kane’s header for the third goal.

And fans took great joy in seeing the stopper struggle for the seventh consecutive top-flight game; he is yet to be on the winning side in the league for the Irons.

Take a look at the best of the reaction on Twitter below!

Jose Mourinho’s half-time team-talk vs Olympiacos revealed by Dele Alli

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Dele Alli has revealed what Jose Mourinho told his Tottenham Hotspur players at half-time of the Champions League win against Olympiacos, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s he said?

Spurs fell 2-0 behind in a game that they needed to win to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, Alli pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time after a grievous error in defence.

Spurs went on to win the game 4-2 thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and a sweet half-volley from Serge Aurier.

And Alli has now lifted the lid on exactly what Mourinho said in the dressing room.

He said: “Basically, (Mourinho) told us at half-time we couldn’t get any worse. We knew that already. And (he said) that we had to go out in the second half with freedom, be calmer on the ball, play the way we know we can and we did that.

“We knew what we had to do. In the end, it was a great positive result. I think it was down to character and belief, the quality we have in the squad. Personally, I felt like I was at fault for their second goal and I wanted to help the team.

“To get the goal just before half-time gave us the momentum going into the second half. I think we showed our quality in the second half.”

New mentality

Would Spurs have come back under Mauricio Pochettino’s management?

One has to wonder.

But Mourinho’s honesty at half-time, coupled with his back-to-basics approach that has routinely seen the goalkeeper kick long and has skipped the tiki-taka-esque build-up play, saw Spurs roar back to book their place in the knockout stages.

It is a good thing too.

Mourinho appeared to go for broke before the half-hour stage as he substituted Eric Dier and replaced him with Christian Eriksen, perhaps because he knows the chances of beating Bayern Munich in Germany are slim at best. That’s the Bayern that beat Pochettino’s team 7-2.

Having a manager that has a win-at-all-costs mentality could change things for Spurs and Tuesday was just the latest evidence of that.

This was a major win that was pulled from the fire; think back to the clash in Greece, when Spurs surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2. Mourinho wouldn’t have stood for that, just like he didn’t stand for this first-half performance.

Mourinho didn’t stand for Eric Dier’s performance, either, substituting him in the first-half. Take a look at what fans said about his display!

Nottingham Forest could have a problem when Yohan Benalouane returns

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

A fresh start.

That is what Nottingham Forest defender Yohan Benalouane will be hoping to get from boss Sabri Lamouchi when he eventually comes back from injury.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Lamouchi explained that although he has yet to play under him at the City Ground, he’s very aware of what the Tunisian can bring to the table.

He stated that he knows him from his time in Italy as well as during his stay at Leicester and that he “can be important” for the side. The manager also gave an update on his current injury, suggesting that the defender is nearly approaching full fitness.

So based on those words, it looks as if Benalouane is going to be given the chance to show what he can do under Lamouchi, as opposed to being allowed to leave like Alex Milosevic.

But just where does he stand in comparison to the rest of his Forest teammates and does he have a realistic chance of breaking into the first team?

On the chalkboard

If you take a look at his statistics and compare them to his teammates (all from WhoScored), he certainly makes a case that he should be a regular starter.

He comes out on top in regards to tackles completed per game, with an average of 1.7 whilst his closest competitor is club captain Michael Dawson with 1.3.

He also beats them all out when it comes to interceptions, averaging 2.4 per game with Tobias Figueiredo coming the closest at 2.2.

So when it comes to players and the ball in and around the box, you can rely on Benalouane to stop either of them getting near the goal, at least in comparison to the rest of his teammates.

However, those are the only areas that he leads the team in, as the 6 foot 1 centre back falls flat in comparison to the rest of the team in other areas.

He ranks second last when it comes to aerial duels won with 1.8 per game and also ranks dead last when it comes to pass completion percentage with an average of 73.9%, which in the modern game when you want players passing out from the back is a bit of a worry.

So it’s clear to see that he does offer some benefit, but isn’t quite the complete package.

He’s unlikely to break up the tried and trusted partnership that has been developed since the start of the season between Joe Worrall and Dawson, but he could slot himself into that third centre-back slot on the bench as cover for either of them should an injury occur. However, as far as his chances of starting are concerned, they might be dead in the water.

With Figueiredo and Chema both fighting it out for that spot as well, he’s going to have to put in some effort in training to get ahead of them, especially because Lamouchi has seen what they can do in his system and what they can offer.

Exclusive: John Hartson raises doubts over Spurs’ decision to sign Ndombele

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson called into question Tottenham’s transfer policy over the summer and their decision to bring in Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

It was a signing which was greeted with a lot of excitement by fans, partly because it signalled a move away from the club’s restrictive spending, having gone two whole transfer windows without making an addition prior to the summer.

Despite that, the Frenchman hasn’t exactly set the world alight despite scoring two goals in six league games.

As a result, the former Celtic striker has questioned the club’s decision to sign him, though he admitted there is time for Ndombele to improve.

While speaking exclusively to FFC, Hartson said: “Did they really need him [Ndombele]? They paid an awful lot of money for Ndombele and I’ve not really seen it yet, but it’s probably too early to judge.”

The 23-year-old has so had a mixed opening to his Spurs career, and that could partly be due to the fact that he may not be at full fitness, with many Spurs fans noticing that it didn’t take long for him to look fatigued in the 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

It could be a worry for the Tottenham hierarchy considering he cost an eye-watering £53.8m, a deal that broke the club’s record which previously stood at £42m for the capture of Davison Sanchez.

For that kind of money, Spurs could be forgiven for expecting a quicker start to life in north London, though as Hartson suggests it may take time for him to get up and running in the Premier League, and once he does he could show the best of what he has to offer.

The clearest indication that Ndombele’s performances have dropped off are his average passing stats, with 36 per game for Spurs in the league compared to 58 per game for Lyon last term, and that in itself suggests that he is yet to deliver the type of form that earned him a summer move.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Moses Odubajo puts in a dreadful display vs Everton

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

The Carabao Cup was back in action on Tuesday evening as Sheffield Wednesday hosted Premier League outfit Everton at Hillsborough in the third round.

Both managers rung the changes with Garry Monk switching out as many as eight players while Marco Silva surprisingly named a strong-looking line up as he looked to banish their top-flight struggles, having lost their last two outings.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was one player brought in by the Portuguese boss and it paid off with the 22-year-old striker bagging a brace for the game’s only two goals.

Behind him was a dangerous attacking trio of Richarlison, Alex Iwobi and Bernard with the latter being a menacing presence along the left-flank by recording two successful dribbles and one accurate through ball, per WhoScored.

His opposite number Moses Odubajo struggled to cope with the 27-year-old Brazilian for large spells, and even though he didn’t score or assist a goal, his contribution ultimately led to Wednesday’s downfall.

Odubajo has started the full 90 minutes in all three of Monk’s games in charge of the south Yorkshire club, so it is clear to see that he is his preferred option at right-back.

Though, this latest showing left a lot to be desired as the defender failed to register a single tackle, which likely allowed Bernard in on a few occasions.

He won just 25% of his duels, the majority of which on the ground which suggests he was often left beaten out wide.

The 26-year-old was heavily involved in the match as he managed to gain 71 touches of the ball, but with 16 of those he lost possession – therefore, just over one in five touches handed possession back to the visitors.

Odubajo was robbed of his chance to play in the Premier League when sustaining a severe injury by dislocating his kneecap during pre-season, just a few months after Hull City had clinched promotion via the playoffs.

Based on that performance, the right-back may not be cut out for the top-flight anytime soon, but it’s always positive to see a player feature again after nearly two years out of the game.

This will be his fourth season at Championship level having made 128 appearances though he must do better going forward.

Manchester City should sign Toby Alderweireld according to ESPN pundit

Manchester City seemingly have a big problem in their defence at the moment.

The Premier League champions are currently without their two first-choice centre-backs as John Stones and Aymeric Laporte have both been ruled out of action due to injury.

It seems as if the club’s inability to bring in a player to fill the void left by Vincent Kompany has come back to haunt them, but ESPN’s pundits believe that the solution to replacing the Belgian is to bring in another player from the same nation.

Indeed, Steve Nicol believes that Man City should be moving for Toby Alderweireld to fill the gap in their backline.

With the 30-year-old entering the final year of his contract, Nicol believes that the Spurs star would be available for around £30m.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Manchester club pursue the defender, but if they do he would certainly provide some much-needed depth in a problematic spot.

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard has England status debated on talkSPORT

[ad_pod ]What’s the deal with Jesse Lingard? The Manchester United forward hasn’t scored or assisted a single goal in the Premier League since January, but he finds himself in the privileged position of wearing an England shirt. It’s a real headscratcher.Of course, managers have their preferences and favourites, and one thing Gareth Southgate and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are almost guaranteed from playing the 26-year-old is high pressure and running – two very compatible traits in the modern game. But then you have to ask yourself: at what point is this not enough?Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Lingard has just 17 goals and 12 assists in 115 top-flight games; his best season saw him claim just eight goals and six assists. How exactly does that output equate to international standards? Realistically, it doesn’t.

Let’s consider for a moment the impact of blind loyalty towards Lingard. Leicester City’s James Maddison is just one attacking option we consider more viable than his United counterpart, with 16 direct goal contributions already to his name in the Premier League after just 40 appearances.

Would his England integration have come sooner without Lingard in the picture? How might that affect the oh-so-important bonding stages before major tournaments? You know, the very thing that was lacking during our ‘Golden Generation’ and has since been attributed to their failure.

Mason Mount is another up and coming star, with two goals for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side in four appearances. Will he now be benched to accommodate Lingard? These are queries that need answering, especially with Euro 2020 on the horizon.

TalkSPORT hosts Perry Groves and Jason Cundy have recently debated the United man’s inclusion in the squad…

Leicester stars James Maddison and Ben Chilwell involved in hilarious exchange on Twitter

[ad_pod ]Being called up for the national side is probably pretty daunting for a young player. They’ve got to put aside all club rivalries and work with players who are usually on the opposing teams week in week out.It presumably helps to have a player from club level standing beside you, and fortunately for James Maddison and Ben Chilwell, they can rely on each other.Watch Leicester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, both Leicester stars have been named in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, and they shared a moment on Twitter that highlights the type of camaraderie they will bring to the Three Lions’ set-up.

It all started when Leicester City’s official account posted an image of Chilwell looking at Maddison’s phone over his shoulder.

The left-back then took that tweet and joked that the midfielder was checking to see if anyone had sent him some rather private messages, thanks to his England call-up.

Maddison wasn’t having any of that though, and he fired back with a quip saying that he was actually checking if Chilwell was fit this weekend so that he could sort out his Fantasy Premier League team.
