Lots of cheer as India win T20 World Cup for the Blind

India against Pakistan, in the final of the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup. No, we’re not talking Johannesburg 2007, but Bangalore 2012. This time, it was the inaugural T20 World Cup for the Blind, which India took by 29 runs. The 12-day tournament, comprising nine teams, signed-off with much fanfare. There was India’s national broadcaster, Doordarshan, on hand to telecast the match. There were cheerleaders and the customary T20 bugle call being blasted over the PA. There were radio jockeys with boundary-side updates, and there were local actors to add a dash of glamour and get the crowd going. And, most vitally, there a crowd to get going. A crowd that numbered around 4000.”I don’t think I’ll ever experience anything like this in my life again,” South Africa’s visually-impaired cricket team captain, Desigan Pillay, said, as the spectators launched into a chant. His team-mate, Hendrik Christiaan, backed him up: “Back home, your wife thinks you’re great. And, probably, your mum. But to see so many people here, creating such an atmosphere, it’s very encouraging.”Batting first on a Central College ground with a patchy outfield, India got to 258 for 8 – not a very intimidating total by blind cricket standards. At one point though, it looked like they might get much less. Enter Ketanbhai Patel, one of the four fully blind or B1 players in the XI (among the partially-sighted players, four are B2s – players who can see up to three metres – and the remaining three are B3s or those who can see up to six metres). As per the rules, B1 players have their scores doubled and so, when they click, they can make a huge difference for their team. Today, Ketanbhai clicked. He scored 98 off 43 balls, caught and bowled two short of a rare B1 century.Pakistan came into the final unbeaten, and are the only team to make it to the finals of all four global blind cricket tournaments to date – this one, and the three 40-overs World Cups before this. They won two of those titles, the most recent being a victory over India in Islamabad in 2006. This time round, though, the very vocal home crowd wasn’t behind them and the pressure seemed to get to Pakistan. They lost wickets in a hurry and the run outs in the innings showed that they were nervous.By the time the final over began, the game was over and the Indian fans knew it. Most left the shade of the (tents) surrounding the field, and crowded the boundary boards. The moment the final ball was bowled, and the 29-run win official, they spilled on to the field despite the best efforts of the volunteers and the police. Photographers with cameras flashing, schoolchildren draped with flags, physically challenged in wheelchairs … they were all out there. Some sprayed bottled coke on others, while the crackers went off in the background.Over the next hour, the Indian visually-impaired team was hugged and hoisted on shoulders and raucously celebrated. After the speeches – several of them – mementos were handed out to all the teams by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga and former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani, among others. The star player of the tournament, India batsman Prakash Jairamaiah, was garlanded and India captain Shekhar Naik was handed the trophy. Of course, there were a few well-deserved cheques handed out too.

South Africa seek to finish the job

Big picture

For the second series this year, England are faced with a must-win final Test in order to preserve their No. 1 status. They managed to produce a No. 1 performance in Colombo to defeat Sri Lanka and stay top of the pile. That performance followed four consecutive defeats and, once again, England have to pull something out of the bag after less-than-ideal preparation.Their cricket might have improved at Headingley in the second Test but any sign of improvement has been totally overshadowed by a social media ruckus. Twitter, YouTube, text messages and emails have ensured Kevin Pietersen’s long-term England future has dominated the news rather than the facts of the immediate future – England have to win this Test. And without Pietersen they are without the man that took the series back to South Africa and at last put them under pressure with his 149.South Africa might be a little miffed by the Pietersen saga too. They have come dangerously close to being dragged into the mire and few are discussing their opportunity to ascend the summit of world cricket, for which they need only a draw. They are by far the more settled of the two camps and have players in form and in confident mood. Several had injury worries after the second Test but they are now fully recovered and preparing to take South Africa to the top.Much will depend in this match on England’s ability to score enough runs. Sounds simple enough – and the totals they have achieved so far in this series would have been good enough to pressurise many teams – but England have found themselves with too few runs to play with against the depth, talent and mental strength of South Africa’s line-up. Twice England have squandered positions to rack up very high scores and they cannot afford to miss their chance at Lord’s, otherwise South Africa’s order could swamp them once again.

Watch out for

There is suddenly some pressure on Graeme Swann. The stock of England’s premier spinner has fallen in the last year – he didn’t have the devastating effect the Pakistan slow men enjoyed in the UAE and laboured for 50 fruitless overs at The Oval under suspicion of an elbow injury. He took his first first-class wicket since June last week for Nottinghamshire at Taunton. Last summer, Swann used the final Test against India at The Oval, to re-establish his claim as one of the world’s best spinners by bowling his side to victory on the final day. He will be hoping for a repeat performance.Dale Steyn endured a miserable Lord’s debut on South Africa’s last tour in 2008, taking 1 for 117 as England built a huge first-innings total. He will be looking for happier memories this week and will hope to add to his 10 wickets – making him the leading wicket-taker – in the series so far.

Pitch and conditions

The Olympic archery tournament was completed less than two weeks ago so it will be interesting to see how the outfield has coped with temporary stands and artificial paths. “It’s not as pristine as you normally see Lord’s but you’ve got to give credit to them for the effort they have put in,” Graeme Smith said. The square was largely unaffected by the archery and with the drier weather in recent weeks than at the start of the season, a truer surface than during the West Indies Test should be found.

Team news

Pietersen’s absence could be the excuse England need to play five bowlers in their search for 20 wickets – something they have been loathe to do in recent times. They used Samit Patel as a fifth bowler in Sri Lanka but you have go back to Dhaka in February 2010 for a match where five specialist bowlers were picked. Swann could replace Pietersen with Ian Bell batting at No. 4 and Matt Prior at No. 6. The tried-and-tested method, however, would be to slot Jonny Bairstow back into the side.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 James Taylor, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven FinnSouth Africa will remain unchanged, as all their injury worries, Alviro Petersen, Jacques Kallis and Smith, have recovered.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Jacques Rudolph, 7 JP Duminy, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir

Stats and trivia

  • In total, the teams have met 14 times at Lord’s with England winning six and South Africa four.
  • England haven’t beaten South Africa at Lord’s since 1960 – six Tests ago – when they triumphed by an innings and 73 runs.
  • South Africa’s record Test total came at Lord’s in 2003 – 682 for 6 declared.
  • Andrew Strauss’ 100th Test will be his 50th as captain, while Stuart Broad’s 50th Test will be his 100th first-class match

Kohli pleased to perform despite verbal battle

Virat Kohli has said his first Test century is all the more special because he had to go through a verbal barrage from Australian fielders to get there, and that he gave it back verbally and still got there

Sidharth Monga at the Adelaide Oval26-Jan-2012Virat Kohli has said his first Test century is all the more special because he had to go through a verbal barrage from Australian fielders to get there, and that he gave it back verbally and still got there. He also spoke about the abusive crowds, which he said was an uneven battle because the crowds get away with it and the players end up getting fined or banned.Kohli said there had been sledging throughout the day, but it reached a “low point” after he nearly ran himself out in desperation to get to his 100th run. “Hilfenhaus said something to me, which was totally unnecessary and out of the blue,” Kohli said. “He wasn’t even bowling or doing anything. I survived that run-out. He said something to me, which I can’t obviously say in a press conference. I gave it back to him. ‘You didn’t even have anything to do with it, why would you do that?'”Ishant and me both came together, and started saying stuff to them. They got really pissed [off] with it, I guess, and I usually play my cricket like that. I gave it back, so whatever happened at the end of the day I am pretty happy with what I did.”The sledging battle between David Warner and Ed Cowan, and Kohli has been an ongoing one. Today, though, Kohli said both of them congratulated him on getting his hundred, and Ricky Ponting tried to calm things down too. Kohli said he was never going to take abuse from anyone.”To give it back verbally and then score a hundred is even better,” he said. “I mean, we don’t go out there to take any kind of stuff from anyone. We are international cricketers as well. They should know that. We need to let them know that. Be it in any way. By talking and by performing. It’s much more satisfying.”They sledge when they get frustrated. Obviously it was hot out there, and constantly they were sledging the players so they could spoil our concentration. During that partnership they went really, really low.”In Sydney they were after me because I wasn’t scoring. Today they were pissed [off] because I got a hundred so it hasn’t changed much, but the reasons have changed.”Peter Siddle said he didn’t mind that kind of sparring with Kohli. “I think he has [had a lot to say] but that’s part of his game, he’s a tough competitor and he’s shown that,” Siddle said. “He goes out there, has a bit of a chirp in the field, but he digs in when he’s got the bat in his hand. That’s the way Australia’s played the game in the past, and that’s the way we like to play it. It’s good fun, a good contest, I like coming up against him and he’s a good player. It’s a nice challenge to have out there, and that’s what people want to watch in Test cricket.”Virat Kohli: “To give it back verbally and then score a hundred is even better”•Getty ImagesThe sledging on the field might have turned out to be an even contest, but Kohli was more annoyed with the fan abuse. He was asked if the Australia players got abused just as badly in India. “I don’t know about that,” Kohli said. “I haven’t spoken to Australian players about that. It is really, really frustrating at times because they say stuff which shouldn’t be said on a cricket field.”We have gone there to play, not to be abused like that. If they have come here [to the ground] to enjoy the game, they should do that. Not get drunk and abuse players. It’s not fair on players. If the player says anything, they are fined and banned. The crowd can just say anything and go home. It should be played in a fair way.”After scoring his maiden century in his eighth match, Kohli also asked for more patience with youngsters coming into Test cricket. Kohli was under immense pressure after his failures in Melbourne and Sydney, with calls for him to be dropped, and had to work hard to come out of that mental state.”They [the youngsters] are all waiting for their opportunities,” Kohli said. “They are as talented or as skilled as any youngster that gets a chance in the team. All of them are eager to play. Putting too much pressure on someone initially, it’s not fair on the guy. You need to let the guy blend into a certain format. Some people start well, some people take time, so you have got to have patience with someone who comes in. All the players who have got chances are good enough. And the day they are mentally even tougher and more sure of themselves, they will be consistent in Test cricket.”This tour has been an emotional journey for Kohli. He watched India lose a Test they could have won, and been involved with crowd abuse and sanctioned for it. He has been the person most sledged by Australia, but he has also been the only Indian to score a century. However, he said he didn’t want to get carried away with it.”I still maintain it’s a learning curve for me,” Kohli said. “I don’t want to say I am established in Test cricket, but I am learning with every game. As long as I can learn and perform at the same time I am going to become a better cricketer everyday, and that’s my aim right now.”Kohli didn’t get to the century without hiccups, though. Two lower-order batsmen fell while he was in the 90s and that reminded him of Perth, where he was left stranded. “After tea, we lost two wickets in two balls again,” he said. “I was pretty frustrated at that point of time. That something like Perth shouldn’t happen again. The next over I decided to go after Harris so that I could get runs and finally, when I got the 100th run, I was on cloud nine. Starting your cricket as a young kid, you always dream of achieving a Test century, and that first one is always the most special.”

India canter to another comprehensive win

England’s weakness against spin cost them for the third time in the series as they unravelled from a strong position to post an underwhelming total on a slow turning pitch

The Report by Abhishek Purohit23-Oct-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsVirat Kohli and Suresh Raina all but sealed the match with a 131-run stand for the fourth wicket•AFP

England’s weakness against spin cost them for the third time in the series as they unravelled from a strong position to post an underwhelming total on a slow turning pitch in Mumbai. Their fast bowlers struck three early blows but Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina motored to a 131-run stand at close to seven an over, showcasing the difference between the sides and sparking another needless bout of words in the middle as England’s frustration overflowed. It was England’s own batsmen who had let down their ragged bowlers down when they caved in against spin in the afternoon. R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took 5 for 79 in 20 overs between them after Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen had built on England’s quickest start of the series.Vinay Kumar broke the 73-run stand between Trott and an uncharacteristically subdued Pietersen, then Jadeja and Ashwin worked their way through a clueless England middle order, striking three times in six overs. Tim Bresnan took the score past 200 with a run-a-ball 45, but England were dismissed with 23 deliveries remaining when fast bowler Varun Aaron bowled Bresnan to finish with three wickets on debut.Disciplined pace bowling led by the impressive Steven Finn kept England in with an outside chance at the start of the chase. Kohli and Raina kept the runs coming, though, not allowing the score of 46 for 3 to tie them down in a partnership that steadily at first, and then emphatically, pushed England out of the match, making a 5-0 whitewash ever more likely.Finn and Bresnan had started with testing spells that kept the India openers quiet. The first five overs produced only 17 runs, leading Parthiv Patel to whip across the line and lose his stumps to Finn. Finn struck again in his next over when Gautam Gambhir inside-edged onto his stumps. His opening spell of 5-0-10-2 was followed by a sharp burst from debutant Stuart Meaker that induced Ajinkya Rahane into a poke outside off stump only for wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter to take a leaping one-handed blinder.Scott Borthwick, the young legspinner surprisingly chosen ahead of Grame Swann, bowled with heart, but it was unfair to expect him to have the same effect that the experienced Swann could have managed. Kohli and Raina continued almost unbothered, picking off the singles easily and finding the boundaries with crisp shots. The duo’s approach was in sharp contrast to England’s tottering line-up.Despite India being three down at the start of the bowling Powerplay, Raina took the chance and chipped Meaker just over mid-off for a boundary. His innings grew into a blur of scythes through extra cover and swings down the ground before Finn bowled him after a missed slog during a heated over. Raina had surged to 80 by then and with Kohli easing into elegant drives and cuts, India were runaway winners with almost ten overs remaining.England’s fate had virtually been sealed when their middle order tried to sweep and slog-sweep their way out of trouble. Pietersen was one of three batsmen to fall on the shots, though the substitute fielder Manoj Tiwary was responsible for sending him back with a diving catch after running across from deep midwicket.Ravi Bopara missed one from Jadeja to be caught in front and Jonny Bairstow’s disappointing series continued when he was bowled by a ripper that pitched on leg and turned to hit off stump. Samit Patel and Bresnan tried to salvage something from 145 for 6 but Patel slog-swept Ashwin straight to deep midwicket in another disappointing batting Powerplay for England.Aaron, who had consistently hovered above 140kph on debut, came back to run through the lower order, hitting the stumps three times, the last of which straightened past Bresnan’s outside edge to clip the top of off, with England well short of a challenging total on a turning pitch without Swann.Things hadn’t looked as gloomy for England when Pietersen and Trott accumulated solidly in a steady partnership that helped them recover after Alastair Cook and Kieswetter departed off successive deliveries. Though Pietersen went hard at deliveries and mistimed his strokes at times, Trott kept the runs flowing, cutting Jadeja three times to the deep point boundary. Trott welcomed Vinay’s second spell with a cracking drive that beat the cover sweeper easily but was dismissed two deliveries later. Pietersen continued to find the field and the India spinners soon got on top decisively, yet again.

Bangladesh are devastated – Siddons

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has said that his team are devastated and shell-shocked after their loss to West Indies in Mirpur. Bangladesh were bowled out for 58, their lowest total in ODIs and the lowest by a Full Member in all World Cups, on a decent batting track. “Devastated. Everyone is still a little shell-shocked. Very embarrassed by the performance,” Siddons said of how the team took the defeat. “Disappointed for the public, but more importantly it’s a World Cup, and we need to play good cricket.”That defeat was followed by some unfortunate incidents in Mirpur: the team buses were pelted with stones by angry fans, and Siddons appealed to the public to realise the people most hurt by the performance were the players themselves. “The public have been very good the whole time, but they were disappointed after the last game. The public needs to realise, and I think they do realise, that the players were the most devastated, most embarrassed, and most upset by the result. They don’t go out there to play cricket like that. We are very keen to bounce back from that performance.”According to reports in local newspapers, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan’s parents’ house was stoned too. Siddons, however, said the people of Bangladesh were still behind his team. “Some people react. Things happen in every country in the world, after crazy performances like that. These people are very big supporters of the Bangladesh cricket team. I saw nothing different when we drove in today [Sunday], or yesterday [Saturday] from the airport; there was still unbelievable support for us. Everyone was disappointed by our performance, but everyone needs to realise these are the best 15 players in Bangladesh, and they are doing their best. If they have bad performances, that’s the way it is. We are trying, we are doing our best. We’ll play good cricket against England, .”It’s in everybody’s best interest – apart from the authorities – to forget what happened on Friday night. And that includes the Bangladesh cricket team. Siddons spoke of the need to not over-analyse that game. “Three or four dismissals were repetitions of mistakes I see in the nets every day, and those weaknesses were exposed in that game. The boys are working on them, they have been working on their faults for the last two or three years. They certainly came out under pressure, and played some shots that we know are our downfalls. The boys have promised me that there will be an improved performance in the next game. Not much more you can say about 58. You can’t over-analyse that.”Siddons agreed that similar mistakes were made in the game against Ireland, which they won thanks to a spirited show in the field to defend a meagre total. “We know what we are working on and what we have to do to play well. It just fell apart that one day. I don’t want to over-analyse because that will not get us anywhere. But we need to learn from it, and the players are aware of that. They need to change a few things and stick to our team plans, which they didn’t do so much in that match, and not even against Ireland. They went away from what has been successful for us for some reason.”Siddons said Bangladesh had batsmen in the XI who can stick around and build an innings, as opposed to the reckless show they put up in the two previous games. “Imrul [Kayes] and Imrose [Junaid Siddique] are the two players that are expected to play long innings. Mushfiqur [Rahim], batting at No. 4, is expected to do that as well. He has done it in domestic cricket; he has done it before at No. 6; and we have pushed him up to No. 4 to do that job. Imrose was playing a lot of shots, and I have spoken to him about that. That’s not his role in the team. As I said, these are the best 15 players for the job. There is no-one outside that can do a better job. So we stick with these players, and we make sure that they do better next time.”Siddons admitted that their performance has left them short on confidence. “The boys are still shell-shocked. They are sad by what happened and by the performance we put up. I am flat. My confidence is a bit dented as well. But we’ll move on. I don’t expect anybody else to forget it, but we need to forget it and move forward to the next game.”

Harbhajan says the pitch has runs in it

Harbhajan Singh, the India offspinner, said he enjoyed the bounce that he got out of the Kingsmead pitch but it also took precise bowling in fast-scoring conditions to succeed as a bowler. He returned 4 for 10 in 7.2 overs, his seventh-best figures outside India.”There is extra bounce, but you still need to be very sure of your length,” Harbhajan said. “Anything slightly short or slightly full can go for runs, at least for a spinner. Fast bowlers need to make the batsmen come forward. That really brings them into the game. But spinners can go for runs because the boundaries are small, and with the good bounce batsmen can connect well.”The major contribution from Harbhajan was Hashim Amla’s wicket. Along with VVS Laxman, Amla has looked the most comfortable batsman in this low-scoring game, and Harbhajan said, even though eventually 18 wickets fell on the second day, things were looking hard for the bowlers when Amla was at the wicket. “There’s nothing wrong with the wicket, it’s still a good one. If you bowl in the right areas, there is a little bit of extra bounce but no lateral movement. The bowlers have a chance to get wickets, but the way Hashim was going, batting was looking simple. It’s the kind of wicket where if a batsman gets in, he needs to make full use of it. I don’t know how 18 wickets fell in a day on this wicket.”Harbhajan’s second wicket was special for a couple of reasons: it got Rahul Dravid his 200th Test catch, and his 50th off Harbhajan’s bowling. “He took a brilliant catch but it would have been nice to see him still batting at stumps, but unfortunately he’s not there.”India did have a disappointing spell where they lost four quick wickets after bowling South Africa out for 131, one of whom was Dravid, but to their relief VVS Laxman and Cheteshwar Pujara batted out close to the last one-and-a-half hours, and Harbhajan said those two would be crucial in setting South Africa a competitive target. “There’s still a lot of cricket left. We don’t want to be complacent. We want to bat well tomorrow. Hopefully Laxman and Pujara can bat a long time and get a lot of runs on the board, and then we’ll take it from there. We need to make sure we score more than 300 to give ourselves a good chance.”Harbhajan was pleased with how Pujara batted, playing only his second Test. “He showed great character to stick it out and let us know he wants to be a player who can be counted on. He practises very hard, and is a gutsy player; he’s not worried about the bounce or the pace or anything. I hope he can convert all the domestic runs he’s scored into international success.”
