Dreadful: Arsenal fans slam Granit Xhaka after drawing to Brighton

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to criticise Granit Xhaka after the 1-1 draw against Brighton.

The score-draw practically ends Arsenal’s hopes of finishing in the top four, as they will need to win their last fixture and hope Tottenham lose, whilst there will also need to be an eight-goal swing in terms of goal difference.

One fan is happy (but very confused) after Wolves beat Arsenal in the video below…

Almost all of the Arsenal team were well below par, but the 6 foot midfielder, who gave away the penalty for Glenn Murray’s equaliser, was especially poor and received the bulk of the supporters’ anger after full-time.

It has been a seismic collapse from Unai Emery’s men at this late stage of the season. The Gunners faced four fixtures against Crystal Palace, Wolves, Leicester and Brighton, and only managed to pick up a single point – given how their top-four rivals have also performed, even just a few wins would’ve put them in a commanding position.

Despite the entire teams struggling on the day, let’s see what the Arsenal supporters have been saying about the Swiss international Xhaka…

West Ham selling themselves short with £70m valuation of in-demand Rice

[ad_pod ]

West Ham have placed a £70million valuation on midfielder Declan Rice, per Football Insider.

The England international has impressed this season, drawing admiring glances from across the Premier League.

What’s the word?

Rice, per the aforementioned report, has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City this season after a series of impressive displays.

Indeed, Rice has become a key man under Manuel Pellegrini and has made 33 appearances in all competitions.

His performances were recognised by Gareth Southgate, who called Rice into his England squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro earlier this month after the 20-year-old had switched allegiance from the Republic of Ireland.

Football Insider report that the Hammers are keen to keep Rice and build a team around him, having been so struck by his displays since his breakthrough.

But there is also a claim that they would accept a bid worth £70m or in excess of it. Rice signed a new contract earlier this season and is currently tied to West Ham until 2024.

Selling themselves short

The Irons are selling themselves short if this report is true.

A figure of £70m two or three years ago would have been earth-shattering but, now, there will be very few eyebrows raised.

Rice has emerged as a genuine talent this season and, if he were to leave, West Ham would need to replace him immediately.

£70m might seem like a lot of money but in today’s market, that might only get you two proven Premier League players. In many ways, it’s quite a naive estimate of Rice’s worth and potential, especially with so many clubs courting his services and so many years left on his contract.

Rice is already an elite midfield talent and would improve any club he moved to, including City; West Ham should up his asking price to properly reflect that fact.

Middlesbrough: Pulis pleads for togetherness in wake of growing frustration

Tony Pulis faced the media today, ahead of their massive game against Swansea tomorrow, and was defiant in the face of mounting criticism from Boro’s fans.

He acknowledged fans’ feelings, and agreed that, as paying customers, they have every right to criticise, insisting “they can say what they want”.

But he also pleaded for unity, expressing a need for “everyone to be together”, in a bid to end their horrible run of form, and regain their footing in the play-off race.

The Hartlepool Mail report Pulis said: “I don’t have a problem with it. If people want to criticise I understand that. I understand the job. I understand my responsibilities.

“People pay their money and they have a right to criticise. They can say what they want.. “But we need everyone to be together right now. And the most important people in that are the players. They have to stay together and they have that belief.

Boro’s loyal fans have a dilemma on their hands. While they are fed up with how things have gone recently, they do need to be behind their side in the remaining games — starting at Swansea tomorrow.

That said, they cannot be expected to watch a team go six games without a win — which has seen them lose their last five in succession — without venting their frustrations.

To say nothing, is to send a message that they are accepting what they are being served up, and that is simply not right.

It is a balancing act.

The fans will, as ever, be 100 per cent behind their team when they walk onto the pitch at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow, but for how long, is up to the manager an players.

If they start well, and get their noses in front, then Pulis’s rallying call will be followed.

But should they continue to struggle to find the net, and see their manager seemingly unable to switch to an effective plan B, then the fans will hold him, and the players, to account.

The supporters can definitely do their part to help tomorrow, but it is certainly not their job to motivate the players before a game — they should not have to.

That is the manager’s job, and if he cannot get every one of his players up for a game, in which nothing other than a win will suffice, then the only outcome is for him to leave his post.

Pulis, apparently, has support in the boardroom — at least publicly anyway — but how long that lasts, only time will tell.

What are your thoughts and predictions before tomorrow’s game? Will you listen to Pulis’s calls for unity? Let us know your thoughts…

Arsenal: ‘Wengerball’ is still alive at Arsenal, and it needs to get out of the system

It’s no secret that Arsenal are enjoying a resurgence to form with Unai Emery at the helm, but the philosophies of Arsene Wenger still linger at the club.

For all the social media attention and praise ‘Wengerball’ got during the legendary manager’s final season with Arsenal, it’s clear to see that the team are still stuck playing some of the styles Wenger laid out in his decades at the club.

This was evident in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Newcastle, where there were many times where the Gunners played way too many passes in an attacking sequence or tried way too hard to try and walk the ball into the net.

Of course, the result is the only thing that really matters at the end of the day, and the performance overall was a positive one from the Gunners with Mesut Ozil having one of his best games this season and Ainsley Maitland-Niles yet again stepping up in a big game, but with Unai Emery keen to get his team to play his way of football, it’s pretty damming that the XI are still occasionally playing Wenger’s style of football.

We have seen countless times this season when Arsenal stick to Emery’s plan, goals and fluid attacking football are a given, but through the cracks that are there under the Spaniard’s system we have seen the team resort to the ways of old under Wenger, and the sooner this is weeded out of the club the better.

There’s no doubt that Wenger’s style of winning in a flashy and sometimes beautiful fashion revolutionised English football, but in the modern era, that style of football does not win you titles unless you are willing to adapt it, which is why it is important for Emery to filter out that style at Arsenal.

The Gunners have a good future under the former PSG manager, but if the team aren’t willing to shake off the ghosts of the past, then Arsenal as a club will not progress.

Arsenal fans, what have you made of Emery’s tactics this season?

West Ham fans on Twitter see the lighter side as youngster gets international call

[ad_pod ]West Ham United fans on Twitter have seen the lighter side after Academy of Football product Conor Coventry received his maiden call-up to the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad.Hammers fans have ripped into the Ireland U21 team that the 18-year-old central midfielder has broken into for a 2021 UEFA European U21 Championship qualifier at home to Luxembourg, taking no prisoners.Unsurprisingly, the bulk of the comments centre around Coventry’s teammate and close friend Declan Rice, who famously progressed through the youth ranks of the ROI team and into the senior side, before switching his international allegiance to England.Rice was included in his first Three Lions squad this week meaning the wound is still very tender for the Irish FA and they will be keen to tie the English-raised Coventry down as soon as possible.

As satirical as the reaction from West Ham fans is, with the Claret & Blue Army not holding anything back in their trolling, there is still the very real possibility that the youngster could follow in his comrade’s footsteps.

Remarks such as “can’t wait till his first England cap” and “he’ll be English before you know it” have been flying around Twitter since the announcement.

Tottenham fans split on Aleksandar Mitrovic reports

[ad_pod ]

TEAMtalk have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur made a £27m bid for Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in January, but the Cottagers refused to sell.

Fernando Llorente was tipped to leave Spurs during the winter window, but the Spaniard ultimately stayed due to Harry Kane’s ankle ligament issue.

TEAMtalk have said that Mauricio Pochettino’s side were still in the market for a new striker, though, with Mitrovic the subject of a bid.

The report has claimed that Spurs will return with a bid this summer, which has led to an interesting debate with the club’s supporters on social media.

The 46-time Serbia international has 10 Premier League goals to his name this season, having moved to Fulham on a permanent deal ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

It would be fair to say that the Tottenham fans are struggling to agree whether signing the 24-year-old this summer would be a good idea, though.

Update on Clarke should have Leeds fans breathing a sigh of relief

Leeds United were handed a huge injury blow in their recent 2-1 win over Swansea City after Kemar Roofe damaged his knee ligaments.

The Yorkshire club, however, could be about to receive a boost elsewhere with Jack Clarke closing in on a return to the first team.

The Breakdown

According to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay, Clarke, who was taken ill in a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough at the Riverside last Saturday, has started doing in door gym work after tests showed he was suffering from a virus.

In the last few weeks, the 18-year-old has been in great form with things really heating up at the top of the Championship table, making a quick return to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad massive.

Against Derby County last month, in particular, Clarke impressed down the right-hand side as he gave Max Lowe a torrid time.

The Leeds academy product was able to beat the Derby left-back on either side with his dribbling skill before whipping in dangerous crosses with Roofe profiting from one of them to put Bielsa’s side 1-0 up.

With all of that in mind, the sooner Leeds have Clarke available again, the better, especially with another key attacker in Roofe sidelined at a crucial part of the campaign.

13 fun facts about Mason Mount

Everything you need to know about England and Chelsea midfield star Mason Mount!

Mason Tony Mount is an English professional footballer who plays as an attacking or central midfielder for Premier League club Chelsea and the England national team. He was born on 10 January 1999, in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Mount began his football journey in the youth academy of Chelsea, one of the elite clubs in England. He joined the Blues at the age of six and progressed through the various age groups, showcasing his exceptional work-rate and footballing intelligence.

After rapid development in the youth ranks, he was loaned out to gain valuable first-team experience. During the 2017-2018 season, Mount was loaned to Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands, where he impressed with 24 direct goal contributions from 40 appearances across all competitions.

Another loan move followed, this time to Championship outfit Derby County. He shone again with 11 goals and six assists from 44 outings. Following his successful loan spells, Mount returned to Chelsea and made his first-team debut in August 2019, and never looked back since, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter under manager Frank Lampard, who had a reputation for nurturing young talent.

Mount continued to shine for Chelsea, playing a vital role in their success in recent years, but the major highlight arrived in May 2021 when the Englishman lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy with Chelsea, assisting Kai Havertz’s match-winning goal against Manchester City in the final. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in the same year.

Mount made his senior international debut for England in September 2019 after showcasing his potential across all youth levels with the Three Lions. He has since become a regular member of the England squad and was an integral part of the team that reached the final of the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, ultimately losing to Italy in a penalty shootout.

The 36-cap England star also featured at the recent 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where England were knocked out at the quarter-final stage.

At just 24 years old, Mason Mount has already achieved a significant amount in his career, but what are 13 fun things about Mount you need to know…!

Living his dad's dream

Mount's footballing education began at an early age at his family home. His father, Tony Mount, had the most influence on his son's football career. Tony was a former non-league footballer who later coached local clubs, including Havant Town and Newport.

While Mount's father had a rather unimpressive professional career, he vowed to continue living his dream through his son. No wonder Mount Senior was the one who enrolled him into one of the town’s best football academies, Baorhunt FC, at the age of four.

Mount has spoken about how his father's influence has been crucial to his development as a footballer. He has said that his father taught him the importance of work-rate, passion, and dedication in football, and that he has always been there to support him.

He said: "Dad always said to me, “You have got to do the dirty work”. ‘He told me you can’t just be good on the ball. You have to track back, you have to make tackles and get stuck in. I always want to introduce that into what I am doing now. I don’t just want to be an attacking player who gets into the box and scores goals. I’ve got to do it all."

AdvertisementHis father called an emergency family meeting 🚨

It was way back in 2014 and Mount, one of the most in-demand 15-year-old talents in the country, had to pick between a scholarship with the Blues and a host of tempting offers to leave.

However, this was the time when Chelsea were bankrolled by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and the club's transfer policy was more centred around buying ready-made superstars instead of promoting talent from youth ranks.

World-class players like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah were not given a chance to play at Chelsea, and so they left – becoming big stars.

His father was worried about the situation and called a family meeting to discuss the possibility of leaving Chelsea. Uncles, aunts and grandparents offered advice to the talented teenager after dad Tony called a family meeting at their Portsmouth home. Mount's resolve to become a Chelsea star, though, stayed firm as he refused to budge under pressure.

Tony later explained the incident in an interview with The Sun, saying: "I told Mason I thought he needed to move on to get the best opportunity.

"I said, 'No one at Chelsea's academy has got into the first-team since John Terry — what chance have you got?'

"Mason shot back, 'I'll be the next one.' He said, 'I'm not leaving Chelsea, it's my club. I've been here since the age of six and I'm going all the way.'"

Getty ImagesFootballing inspirations in life?

Mount's idols in football were Lampard, Andres Iniesta, and Luka Modric.

In an interview, he said: “Frank was an example throughout my career at Chelsea, and throughout my career as a midfielder. When it comes to scoring goals as a midfielder, you look at Frank Lampard as a role model. I looked at [Luka] Modric when he was in the Premier League at Tottenham. Andres Iniesta at Barcelona in his prime, playing their tiki-taka, I was always watching them on YouTube.”

Getty ImagesBest friends with Declan Rice 🤝

West Ham United star Declan Rice and Mount have been best friends for over 12 years. The pair first met when they were just eight years old. They were in their formative footballing years in Chelsea's Cobham Academy, at a time when their aspirations of professional contracts and England call-ups were simply just dreams.

They remained close friends and have since progressed to England teammates. Both have risen to stardom at club level, too, with Rice becoming a key player and captain at West Ham while Mount stayed at Chelsea and has become an integral figure at Stamford Bridge.

With both West Ham and Chelsea in close proximity, Mount and Rice remain in close touch and hang out every now and then on the streets of London. What's more, Mount unknowingly violated the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown restrictions by going out in the open to play football with his best buddy in 2020, for which he was criticised in the mainstream media.
