West Ham swoop for Morgan Sanson would be shades of Payet

West Ham boss David Moyes needs additions this summer if the east Londoners are to avoid another relegation battle this season and they could fill a creative void with one mooted transfer target…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, the Hammers have held a long-term interest in Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson and he may well be considered for a switch to the London Stadium this summer.

It’s claimed that the Ligue 1 outfit want around £25m to let him go with many Premier League teams also keen.

The likes of Wolves, Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley have been linked to the 26-year-old by the report and Marseille could be open to selling him before the end of the transfer window.

Shades of Payet

Typically a number eight in central midfield, Sanson could well be one of the most underrated players across Europe. He has regularly delivered for Marseille, scoring at least five times in each of the last three seasons.

This term, the uncapped Frenchman averaged 2.2 tackles, 1.5 dribbles, 1.4 shots, 1.1 key passes and 0.9 interceptions per appearance, via WhoScored.

It suggests that he’d not only be a wonderful box-to-box addition to the Irons’ engine room but also one that’s going to help them score more goals, whether that’s through bagging them himself or creating.

Sanson has been likened to Ruben Neves in the past and it’s easy to see why but perhaps, he has shades of Dimitri Payet too given the pair’s past with Marseille.

Marseille teammate Boubacar Kamara believes the French star will “become a very great player,” adding that “He is athletic. He is a creator, I sometimes wonder how he manages to think of certain gestures in the field. He has several lungs, he helps us a lot, he sacrifices himself to open up spaces for us” in an interview with La Provence.

If Moyes continues to deploy a 4-2-3-1 of sorts, then the 26-year-old could be the man to fill that number ten void with Declan Rice and Thomas Soucek behind.

Whilst Sanson doesn’t possess the magical dribbling ability of Payet, he does bring that much-needed edge in the final third, which is why the West Ham hierarchy should sanction this £25m move.

Liverpool: Fans rage as James Pearce delivers transfer blow surrounding potential Thiago move

Jurgen Klopp has stated it’s likely that Liverpool won’t be bringing in many new signings this summer due to financial difficulty.

According to James Pearce, the German has said a lavish spending spree in the upcoming transfer window is ‘just not possible’. The Premier League champions have been linked to plenty of high profile names, but no talks have come to fruition. One particularly of note is Timo Werner, who looked set to join the Merseyside outfit prior to his move to Chelsea.

Fans have taken to Twitter to air their frustrations over this recent update, as many aren’t happy with their current situation. One supporter has slammed the news for being ’embarrassing’, as they clearly feel a title-winning club should have the funds to recruit this summer.

Another fan has assumed it means ‘so no Thiago’, after Liverpool have been heavily linked to signing the Bayern Munich midfielder (according to Sport, via Metro).

Tottenham Hotspur: Pundit tips Josh King to be a ‘huge’ asset for Spurs as news emerges

Former Spurs star Paul Robinson believes Bournemouth ace Josh King could make a “huge” difference for Tottenham if he joins Spurs in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Robinson insisted his old teammate has massively improved as a player since the two were at Blackburn Rovers together.

Last month, Sky Sports revealed four of the Premier League’s top six clubs want to sign the striker in the upcoming transfer window.

King’s contract is set to expire next year and Bournemouth may try to cash in on the Norwegian beforehand, as they face growing economic uncertainty as a result of the  pandemic.

The pundit feels the 28-year-old will be guaranteed game time in North London, given Harry Kane’s injury list over the course of the past few seasons.

Robinson told football writer Dylan Childs “I played with Josh King at Blackburn and he has developed hugely as a player.

“He came as a wide player after a very good academy upbringing. He was a talented player but he was not the finished article.

“I think he has got better and he now prefers to play down the middle. He has grown in stature and increased his physique. His speed used to be his real asset but now he has got end product as well.

“I can certainly see him fitting into one of the top four’s squads. If Harry Kane is fit, he plays, but he has not played a full season in years. He is guaranteed games even if he is not a starter.”

As it stands, it is hard to argue with Robinson here.

After arriving at the Vitality Stadium from Blackburn on a free transfer, King has excelled for Eddie Howe’s side over the years, bagging 48 goals and providing 15 assists in 163 appearances for the Cherries so far. He is currently valued at £14.4m via Transfermarkt.

The Norway international has scored 4 goals, created 2 assists, made 1.2 key passes per game, and successfully completed at least 2 dribbles on average in the Premier League this season. It is also worth remembering he netted 12 goals in the English top flight last season. (WhoScored).

While he has often been deployed as a second striker, he can also play in a variety of positions, as he has played across the midfield in this campaign.

His versatility is surely an added bonus for Jose Mourinho, as the Spurs boss has been hit by a string of injuries to a number of his forwards, including Kane, Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn.

King can provide solid cover for the attacking options and he would certainly be a useful asset to keep on the bench.

The Lilywhites have also been linked to his clubmate Ryan Fraser but whether or not the South Coast stars end up in North London remains to be seen.

Nottingham Forest: Sabri Lamouchi a ‘big fan’ of Mbaye Diagne

Nottingham Forest have joined the race to sign Senegalese striker Mbaye Diagne from Galatasaray this summer.

According to Fotomac (via Sport Witness), the Reds are keen on snapping up the 28-year-old and have joined Premier League side Watford in eyeing up a potential move in the next window. The Turkish outfit are reportedly looking for bids in the area of £5m for Diagne’s signature.

Galatasaray signed Diagne from Kasimpasa in January 2019 for €13m (£11.6m) but loaned him out in September to Club Brugge. His performance in the Super Lig in the 2018/19 campaign saw him score an incredible 30 goals in 29 appearances between two different clubs (via Transfermarkt).

The 28-year-old’s time in Belgium has been less prolific but still shows his goalscoring ability. Diagne has four goals in six league appearances with Club Brugge this term.

Sabri Lamouchi is reportedly a ‘big fan’ of the striker and would like to see him make the move to the City Ground.

Despite Watford also being in the running for Diagne, Forest could be the more favourable club. The Reds are currently fifth in the Championship and, as it stands, will qualify for a place in this season’s play-offs. After an impressive run, Lamouchi’s side have a good chance of securing Premier League football and could stay in the top flight thereafter.

The Hornets have desperately struggled this campaign and could potentially be in relegation trouble, depending on how the Premier League season is decided.

With Lamouchi being especially fond of Diagne, the club should push for the deal, especially for a fee as minimal as £5m. The striker’s clinical nature will help bolster Forest’s attack and bring a whole new dynamic to the way they cut open the opposition’s defence. His international experience will also add another level of professionalism and experience to the squad.

Man Utd fans will love Odion Ighalo’s response

It seems the lack of football action is starting to get to Manchester United’s January signing Odion Ighalo.

The Nigerian international posted on Twitter to express his boredom, and that soon transpired into becoming an ad hoc Q&A in the replies section.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

One Twitter user asked him to reveal what he loves about his new club, and Ighalo gave a simple one-word reply: Everything.

Ighalo’s arrival at Old Trafford in January certainly raised a few eyebrows, not least because the deal took place in the final hours of the winter transfer window.

However, the 30-year-old has been an effective addition when called upon. He’s already grabbed four goals and one assist for the Red Devils, scoring twice in the Europa League and bagging a brace against Derby County in the FA Cup.

Who knows how long we’ll be waiting for the Premier League to start up again, but it seems Ighalo is eager to get back to serving the club he loves so much as soon as possible.

England’s U17 World Cup winners: Where are they now?

[long_read]

Just over two years ago England’s lion cubs beat Spain 5-2 in a thrilling Under 17s World Cup final and even though all involved are still teenagers it is hoped that by now the most promising of them are beginning the slow process of carving out successful professional careers.

But where are they? Our progress report reveals that while some are well on their way to the top others are lagging behind, struggling to get game-time at their respective employers.

One doesn’t even have a club to play for at all.

Together they were the best in their age-range in the world. Individually, however, they are on very different paths.

[snack_break title="Curtis Anderson (goalkeeper)"]

It was always going to be an enormous stretch for Anderson to break into Manchester City’s team of superstars, usurping Ederson or 123-cap international Claudio Bravo or the highly-rated Arijanet Muric even for an occasional EFL gig.

Just making it to the bench seemed an unlikely aspiration.

With that in mind, a move away from the Etihad last April made a lot of sense though his choice of destination – United Soccer League side Charlotte Independence – surprised.

Alas it has not worked out for the Barrow-born stopper and after making only ten appearances in America, Anderson, in possession of a World Cup winner’s medal, is presently looking around for a goal to keep.

[snack_break title=”Steven Sessegnon (defender)”]

The twin brother of Tottenham’s Ryan impressed at the tournament and though his development may be a relative tortoise to his sibling’s hare, there has still only been an upward trajectory since signing on professional terms with Fulham in the summer of 2017.

Sessegnon has played eight Championship games to date this season – five of them starts – and by virtue of his potential and performances has caught the eye of Spurs who wish to reunite him with his better-known twin.

On the international stage a recent call-up to the under 21s capped an immensely encouraging year for the versatile 19-year-old.

[snack_break title=”Jonathan Panzo (defender)”]

Had the highly-regarded centre-back not decided to leave Chelsea in 2018, it’s not unreasonable to suggest he might be enjoying some Premier League action right about now given the club’s transfer ban and Frank Lampard’s inherent trust in youth.

As it is the South Londoner did leave the Bridge after being there since the age of nine and headed to the sunny climes of Monaco.

Unable to make his mark there Panzo is presently on loan at Belgian side Cercle Bruges but if that hints at a backward step it is anything but.

At international level England know his worth granting him an under 21 bow last month while Monaco have clearly secured him for his long-term promise rather than any immediate impact.

[snack_break title=”Marc Guehi (defender)”]

Another Chelsea prodigy who has risen through the international ranks gaining under-21 recognition on four occasions. That aside Guehi’s progress since he captained the Three Lions to World Cup glory has largely taken place away from the public glare with a series of outstanding displays for Chelsea’s reserves last season, leaving him unfortunate not to be awarded their Academy Player of the Year.

The time is certainly coming for the centre-back who is equally at home down the right flank and presently he is on the cusp of breaking into Lampard’s first eleven. The only negative is accepting how far behind he has fallen to many of his peers.

[snack_break title=”Joel Latibeaudiere (defender)”]

Latibeaudiere’s cool and commanding performances at the back for England proved to be a pivotal factor in their success and led many to ponder the prospect of promotion into Manchester City’s first team squad.

Instead serious injury cruelly deprived him of a whole campaign and with the teen currently entrenched in a contract stand-off it appears his future does not reside in the North West especially with the supremely promising Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Eric Garcia further blocking his path.

A season-long loan spell with Twente in the Eredivisie then suited both parties and with his debut now under his belt the only way is up from here.

“I just need to be playing,” he said recently. He does.

[snack_break title=”George McEachran (midfielder)”]

George’s older brother Josh was himself a Chelsea wonderkid, blessed with twinkling feet and inhabiting the same role stationed between midfield and attack only for him it never quite worked out and he now threads his passes for Birmingham City in the Championship on the very few occasions he can get a game.

Does the same fate await George given that between him and stardom at the Bridge stands Mason Mount, Ross Barkley, Pedro, we could go on. It would appear so and bluntly with no loan move on the horizon or first team opportunity in sight there is a genuine risk of a career stall as McEachran plateaus for the under 23s.

[snack_break title=”Tashan Oakley-Boothe (midfielder)”]

Football is rife with examples of highly thought of young talents who stay around at under 23 level for too long and stagnate. Unfortunately Oakley-Boothe is the latest of them.

In the summer of 2017 he was called up to the first team squad by Mauricio Pochettino for Tottenham’s pre-season tour of the US.  That was his time to shine and he duly did, just not enough unfortunately.

Now at 19 years of age he is already a ‘whatever happened to’ for Spurs fans who once believed he could be the next big thing. Football is a cruel, cruel business but there is still time for him to make an impact.

[snack_break title=”Phil Foden (midfielder)”]

The boy wonder who was awarded the FIFA Golden Ball following his brilliant showings in India then won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year for good measure.

While the rest of football wring their hands in concern at Foden’s perceived lack of first team opportunities at Manchester City, the prodigal son himself is training with the likes of David Silva every day while racking up 1648 minutes for a side dominating the English game. He also happens to have two Premier League medals before the age of 20.

Pep Guardiola recently claimed he wouldn’t consider selling his local starlet for ‘€500m’ before adding: “Phil is City. When David Silva leaves, we know exactly who our new magician will be.”

Foden is just fine. Foden is still golden.

[snack_break title=”Morgan Gibbs-White (midfielder)”]

Contrasting Foden’s development there is a danger of Gibbs-White becoming a cautionary tale for youngsters being given too much game-time – and accompanying hype – too soon.

Having felt his way through the Championship during Wolves’ promotion winning season the 18-year-old was gifted 26 appearances last year and initially excelled among the big boys. A recent drop-off in form however is concerning the Wanderers fan-base.

Let’s hope it’s simply a case of taking a necessary step back before moving forward once again.

[snack_break title=”Callum Hudson-Odoi (forward)”]

The second youngest of the World Cup winning group yet Hudson-Odoi has gone on to achieve far more significant progress than most.

A number of eye-catching displays in the Europa League with Chelsea saw the explosive winger called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate at the turn of the year despite not having started a league game, a rare feat indeed.

His league showings soon after astounded one and all and acted as an uncommon cause for optimism in an otherwise turbulent season for the Blues until a ruptured Achilles brought everyone crashing down to earth.

Persistent interest from Bayern Munich over the summer was circumnavigated and now the young attacker is back, fit and firing. The future looks bright and assured from this one.

[snack_break title=”Rhian Brewster (forward)”]

Long held in the highest esteem on Merseyside after scorching his way through the youth ranks Brewster’s goal-scoring exploits and fleet-footed movement in the tournament earned him the Golden Boot while marking him down as a serious prospect. Had Liverpool unearthed yet another deadly finisher to follow in the prolific footsteps of Rush, Fowler and Owen?

That question remains up in the air largely due to a long-term injury that set the teenager’s development back a full twelve months but now back and in contention his path to the first team seems assured given how highly Jurgen Klopp rates him.

Now it’s just a matter of time.

Liverpool should sign Iker Muniain as back-up to Sadio Mane

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It seems like Iker Muniain has been around for ages.

The two-time Spain international made his debut for Athletic Bilbao as a 16-year-old back in 2009, and he has been a mainstay in the team ever since. Even at the age of just 26, he has made 398 appearances for Los Leones, scoring 58 goals and providing 40 assists. It seems he is rather settled at the Basque club, with him having made the uncommon step of signing a new contract without a release clause in it. In Spain, this is something of a rarity.

[ad_pod ]

However, according to Don Balon, Jurgen Klopp would be interested in taking Muniain to Anfield next summer. Whilst the potential fee is not yet known, it is being said that Liverpool would be willing to double his €2m (£1.7m)-a-year salary.

As a left-winger, it is hard to see the Spaniard dethroning Sadio Mane in the Reds’ starting XI. Having said that, coming in as a back-up/rotation option would not go amiss. At the moment, the alternative to the Senegal international appears to be Divock Origi, but he is a striker by nature and only plugs a gap when appearing on that flank. As a specialist in that position, Muniain is exactly what Klopp needs.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

He has the ability to succeed, too. This season, he has been in good form for Gaizka Garitano’s side. In 12 La Liga appearances, he has bagged four goals, which have come from an average of 1.1 shots per game. Standing at just 5 foot 7 in, he is diminutive, and that has brought along tags of “the Spanish Messi” in the past. Whilst he cannot match the standards of the great Argentinian, he is still a creative force. He has 1.5 key passes per match this campaign, as well as 1.8 dribbles. In both aspects, he leads the way amongst his teammates.

Currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, it is not known how much Bilbao would command for his services, or even whether Muniain would be willing to depart San Mames. Should he feel inclined to seek out a new challenge, though, Merseyside would be a good destination. As cover for Mane, he would be exactly what the former Borussia Dortmund boss requires.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans love one popstar’s reaction to one of their best moments from last season!

Spurs’ Davinson Sanchez shows the necessary attitude to improve and succeed

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Davinson Sanchez has responded to comments made by Jose Mourinho in a professional but determined style which says a lot about his character.

What did he say?

The Portuguese boss remarked two years ago that his Manchester United side exploited a weakness in the defender’s game which allowed his side to beat Ajax in the Europa League final.

Mourinho placed a focus on allowing Sanchez time on the ball, calling into question his ability on the ball – a tagline which has stuck with the 23-year-old ever since.

The Colombia international admitted he was well aware of the manager’s comments, but he hasn’t taken it to heart, and instead chooses to use it as a positive which could allow him to get better.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, he said: “I know about it and my reaction was, ‘Give me the ball to play now!’ Not to show him, just to do my job. That experience puts me in a better position to be here and see how life is.

“There are many things to improve. I’m not nearly a perfect player, that’s why I need to keep going.”

His attitude is exactly what Spurs need right now, with only four wins in 13 games this campaign, and he has already made good on his desire to improve, achieving a pass accuracy of 93% and 94% in his previous two matches against Crvena Zvezda and Watford respectively.

Mature mindset

It is quite easy to forget that Sanchez is still young and has been in England for just two years, as he has made considerable strides in his game since his move from the Dutch champions.

Spurs have suffered defensively of late and that could allow him to nail down a regular place in the side, but his positive attitude means he could also become a key part of the team for years to come.

Check out what one thing all Spurs fans are saying about Son in the video below…

As a result, even if Mauricio Pochettino was to depart, to possibly be replaced by Mourinho – who has been linked – he could maintain his place at the club, as a determination to improve and succeed is what every manager looks for.

With certain players seemingly focused on things other than Tottenham, it is refreshing to see a player willing to learn and not taking the club for granted, and such an outlook could spread throughout the squad.

The futures of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Verthonghen both look uncertain with their contract’s expiring at the end of the season, and that could present Sanchez with the opportunity to step up to the plate and win his manager’s trust.

Man Utd would be landing a midfield powerhouse with Denis Zakaria swoop

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to German publication Bild, Manchester United are interested in signing Denis Zakaria, but face stiff competition from rivals from the Premier League and abroad.

What’s the word?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side look short on depth and quality in central midfield, following a lack of replacements for the likes of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini this calendar year. Paul Pogba’s recent injury troubles have simply exacerbated the problem, and Bild’s report is certainly welcome news for the United faithful.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

It claims the Red Devils are set to battle Tottenham for Zakaria’s signature, but are also likely to face competition from European giants Inter, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. The report adds the midfielder is in high demand following some impressive displays for Monchengladbach and Switzerland respectively.

Powerhouse

Make no mistake about it, Zakaria’s physical profile makes him the kind of player that would fit well into the pace and physicality of the Premier League. The Switzerland international stands at an imposing 6 foot 2, and has built his game around being an all-action type of player.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

In seven games in the Bundesliga, the 22-year-old averages 0.9 shots, 2.9 dribbles and 2.3 tackles per game – evidence of a dynamic central midfielder who contributes immensely at both ends of the pitch. His performances are a key reason behind why Monchengladbach are the surprise leaders of the German top-flight, after picking up 16 points from their opening seven matches.

His promise has seen him earn remarkable plaudits from a host of people, not least Germany legend Lothar Matthaus.

“I’m glad that Gladbach have found another pearl. At his age I was earning my first stripes for Borussia. He reminds me of Toni Kroos at that age.”

Having been linked with a move for Kroos a few seasons before, swooping for Zakaria would ease some of the regrets of missing out on the now Real Madrid star. If the Red Devils can fend off the reportedly intense competition for his services, they would be pulling off a major coup.

Wolves boss Nuno Santo’s harsh September should teach him two things

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Monthly Review series, which analyses what managers can learn from the previous month and what the coming month could have in store.

September was a month of two halves for Nuno Santo and Wolves – well, it was more like three quarters to a quarter as some harsh lessons were learned, but also solutions were beginning to surface as we embark on October.

The west Midlands club started the month with three straight defeats, including their Europa League group opener against Braga at Molineux.

Those results followed the month of August, where they had won all of the qualification games on offer and were actually unbeaten in the Premier League with three straight draws.

Old

One thing Nuno can take inspiration from is that the 3-4-3 formation that won the Championship is still hugely effective.

The Portuguese boss scrapped it upon promotion to the Premier League, primarily opting for a 3-5-2 formation, which was maybe utilised to accompany the arrivals of Joao Moutinho, Leander Dendoncker and Raul Jimenez.

However, Wolves’ first win of the season came at the weekend playing with that old formation, so it’s something they should definitely stick with.

As previously mentioned on Football FanCast, it bridges the gap from midfield to attack more effectively and thus can bring the west Midlands club more success.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

New

Nuno is starting to realise just how monumental the burden of games will be this season.

Last term, the 45-year-old primarily used just 19 players in the Premier League as they secured a seventh place at the first time of asking.

That’s just not possible this time around as their progression in the Carabao Cup has meant they play two games per week for the foreseeable future – well into 2020, and then the FA Cup comes into play, which could add further weight to their schedule.

As many as 24 players have featured in the old gold shirt this season across all competitions, so there are signs that Nuno’s attitude is changing, but still, it could be better.

For instance, Pedro Neto, who has only started one league game this campaign, has since proven why their squad depth can be trusted following his impressive showing against Watford.

It’s time to do that in October, Nuno.
