There was no disguising Ashley Giles’ downbeat mood when he considered England’s continued losing run under his leadership

It was once said by PG Wodehouse that “it is never difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine.”While it might be stretching a point to describe Ashley Giles, the England limited-overs coach, as a man with a grievance, there was no disguising his low mood when he appeared before the media in Barbados on Wednesday.It is understandable, too. His side has now been beaten five times in succession in T20I cricket and has lost the series against West Indies with one game in hand. Furthermore, the batting appears vulnerable against spin – the top-order batting appears vulnerable against everything – and his captain, Stuart Broad, has an injury that might well prove rather more troublesome than the England camp are letting on. At some stage, his injured knee is going to require several weeks off and, perhaps, an operation.As if all that was not enough, Giles takes this struggling team to Bangladesh in a few days to contest a World T20 tournament for which they appear woefully unprepared. And he does so knowing that his application to become England coach in all formats might well be decided by the outcome.So Giles was noticeably downbeat and admitted he was concerned by England’s poor form. While he celebrated the encouraging performance of Jos Buttler in the second T20I, he stressed that the middle order could not consistently be expected to bail England out of a mess if the top order has failed.”Sure, we’re concerned,” Giles said. “We’ve lost five in a row. Clearly we’re not playing very good Twenty20 cricket and we haven’t done for a period now.”We’ll go into the tournament as underdogs. We’re just not getting into matches. That’s the biggest concern. Four of the last five occasions we’ve been three down at six overs. The other time we were two down. If you consistently do that, you’re behind the eight ball.”As good as the players we’ve got coming into our middle order, it’s very difficult for them to salvage games from those positions. Jos Buttler was fantastic and showed a glimpse of his world-class quality. But unfortunately we’re working from a low-base after six overs quite a lot. And from that position it gives you very little chance to kick-on and attack all the way through your innings. You have to go through a certain amount of rebuilding. So that’s disappointing and it is frustrating.”We’re consistently having problems with spin as well, so we have to keep working on those skills against spin. In Bangladesh it’s definitely going to play a part. We’d be naïve and stupid to think that probably every team we come up against is not going to open up with spin against us.”We have to try to find a formula at the top. I know you guys will say ‘isn’t that a worry?’ going into a world tournament that you don’t know what your best top three is, but before the one we won here, the opening partnership changed a couple of games before the tournament, so it’s not the end of the world.”The problem for Giles is instilling confidence into a group of players who are beginning to become uncomfortably familiar with defeat. He knows that, if England are to even challenge in Bangladesh, they have to play a brand of positive cricket that currently looks beyond them. But he also knows that, the more the side lose, the more hesitant and uncertain they will become.”Our message is, quite clearly, ‘go and express yourselves, we back you, go and play your way,'” Giles said. “The guys in those positions, we’ve backed them, we support them, we keep working with them and we need them to start putting in some results as well. They know that.”But I think, as much as you say that, you have to understand that guys who are struggling for runs – in the heat of battle, with options going through their head – are sometimes going to hesitate. And if you slightly back off that option just before you make it, then you’re going to get into trouble.”Losing isn’t great preparation. Confidence is important and winning games is always good for the side.”But the wickets we’ve played on against this side are actually pretty good for where we’re going and who we’re going to be playing against. And we’ve come up also against a very, very good side here.”There are signs, however, that Giles’ faith in his own team is starting to wear. He knows he lacks a spinner to compete with the likes of Sunil Narine, or an opening batsman to compare to Chris Gayle”We can’t ‘magic’ guys out of thin air,” he said. “West Indies have great personnel at the moment. We’ve got very good personnel, but very different.”But we have to work with what we have, and I think we’ve got some very good players in the side.”

The umpires inspected the ground at 5pm – two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled start – under sunny conditions, but deemed the outfield unfit for play. The play was finally called off at 5.20pm to boos from the crowd.A drizzle had greeted the teams before the start of the match, but the prospect of play diminished as soon as the downpour increased in intensity around 1.30pm, half an hour before the scheduled start.New Zealand are trailing 0-1 in the five-match ODI series. The teams will travel to Queenstown for the third ODI to be played on the New Year’s day.

– Zé Ricardo e a comissão fizeram análise sobre o Juventude. Equipe que deve vir bastante fechada, como foi contra o Grêmio. Tem dois jogadores muito rápidos pelas pontas e um atacante de referência que segura muito bem a bola. Estamos trabalhando para fazer um grande jogo e conseguir um bom resultado – afirmou.

They are seventh on the table at the halfway stage and need a massive turnaround in the remaining matches to finish in the top four. It will have to start in Chepauk, Super Kings’ fortress that teams are increasingly finding hard to breach.With the solid presence of Michael Hussey at the top, Super Kings’ powerful batsmen are being laid ideal platforms in every game. MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja are not being pressurised to resurrect innings and when they start attacking, they are not the easiest to stop. Neste fim de semana, os chamados 12 grandes estrearam em seus respectivos Estaduais, com alguns tropeços mas também com goleadas. O único a ser derrotado foi o Botafogo, que acabou perdendo para a Cabofriense por 3 a 1. Fluminense, Palmeiras e Corinthians ficaram apenas no empate.

Porém, além de vitórias e derrotas, as equipes apresentaram também desempenhos. Ações, coletivas e individuais, que podem ser lidas através dos números. Confira algumas estatísticas importantes dos times nessa aberturas dos Estaduais pelo Brasil:

DE PÉ EM PÉ

No primeiro jogo-oficial da temporada, o Corinthians já conseguiu colocar em prática uma das principais características do técnico Fábio Carille: o passe. O Alvinegro foi o clube, entre os 12 grandes, que mais acertou toques nesta 1ª rodada de Estadual.

Apesar de ter ficado somente no empate com o São Caetano, em 1 a 1, a equipe dominou a partida, trocando 658 passes, de acordo com o Footstats. Apenas Ramiro, um dos reforços para 2019, acertou 98, mais que a metade de toda a equipe de Mirassol contra o São Paulo (193), por exemplo. O Fluminense, de Fernando Diniz, com 568, foi o segundo no quesito.

ARTILHARIA PESADA

O placar magro contra o Madureira – 1 a 0 – não refletiu bem a superioridade que o Vasco teve em sua estreia no Carioca. Entre os 12 grandes, a equipe foi a que mais finalizou corretamente, com 12 arremates em gol, e a que mais criou chances em bola trabalhada, com 22 assistências.

Individualmente, destaque para Danilo Barcelos, que criou nove chances de gols através de passes e cruzamentos, e para Ribamar, que além de cinco assistências, finalizou três vezes na direção do gol – e outras três para fora.

CHUVA DE GOLS

Se por um lado foi o Vasco quem criou e finalizou mais vezes entre os grandes, foi o Atlético Mineiro quem mais balançou as redes. A goleada por 5 a 0 sobre o Boa Esporte foi a maior goleada do fim de semana entre os clubes da elite. Ricardo Oliveira, com três gols, foi o principal artilheiro.

Grêmio e São Paulo também não economizaram na rodada. Os Tricolores marcaram quatro vezes cada, nas vitórias sobre Novo Hamburgo, por 4 a 0, e Mirassol, por 4 a 1, respectivamente.

ATAQUE AÉREO

O gol de cabeça de Rhodolfo foi o que deu a vitória ao Flamengo sobre o Bangu, de virada. E não foi um lance ao acaso. O Rubro-Negro Carioca foi, ao lado do Vasco, o time que mais acertou levantamentos para a área neste fim de semana, totalizando 12 cruzamentos certos.

Danilo Barcelos, do Vasco, com nove bolas alçadas, foi o líder do fundamento, seguido pelo flamenguista Éverton Ribeiro, autor do passe para o gol da vitória da equipe da Gávea, que concluiu quatro cruzamentos.

FORÇA DEFENSIVA

A melhor defesa é o ataque ou o melhor ataque é a defesa? Dono do saldo mais positivo do fim de semana, o Atlético Mineiro comandou também a estatística de desarmes. Com 25 roubos de bola, o Galo liderou com folga o quesito. O Santos, do técnico Jorge Sampaoli, foi em segundo, com 18.

O lateral-esquerdo Fabio Santos, do Atlético, foi o grande destaque individual, recuperando oito posses de bola para a sua equipe. Luan, também do Galo, e Alison, do Peixe, também obtiveram um bom desempenho.

NO TALENTO INDIVIDUAL

Após começar perdendo para o Mirassol, o São Paulo precisou partir para cima do adversário para conseguir virar o placar e terminar com uma clássica goleada de 4 a 1. E uma das armas para impedir o revés foi o drible.

O Tricolor foi o time que mais fez uso do fundamento nesta primeira rodada, realizando oito fintas corretas, segundo o Footstats. Os laterais Reinaldo e Bruno Peres, com dois dribles cada, foram os destaques da equipe no quesito. O Flamengo, com seis foi outro que fez bastante uso das jogadas individuais.

“Eu não sou bonzinho, sou um cara justo”. A frase de Rodrigo Caio em sua apresentação ao Flamengo mostra que o jogador chega à Gávea disposto a mudar alguns rótulos que recebeu durante a carreira. Para um zagueiro, que muitas vezes depende do físico para se impôr contra os adversários, ‘bonzinho’ pode ser algo pejorativo. No São Paulo, o defensor chegou a ser chamado de ingênuo e até de “jogador de condomínio”. Estereótipos que vão na contramão do que o torcedor rubro-negro costuma esperar de seus atletas, mas também na linha contrária a que Rodrigo apresentou em campo nos últimos anos.

Não dá para esperar que Rodrigo Caio se torne o novo Rondinelli, não tem esse perfil, apesar da liderança natural. Com 1,82 m, também não é esperado que seja uma torre quase intransponível no jogo aéreo como é Dedé, desejo rubro-negro, por exemplo. O reforço da equipe carioca tem características distintas do zagueiro tradicional, até pelo seu biotipo. É técnico, tem boa saída de bola e leitura de jogo. Evita muitas vezes o contato físico com antecipações, mas nem por isso foge das disputas. E seus números mostram isso.

Se em 2018 o ex-tricolor pouco atuou no Brasileiro – fez apenas seis jogos -, em razão de um cirurgia no pé, que o fez perder a condição de titular, em 2017 terminou o campeonato como o zagueiro que mais realizou desarmes. Segundo o Footstats, foram 51 recuperações de posse em 33 partidas, uma média de 1,5 por rodada, bem superior aos 0,9 obtidos por Réver nesta edição – 24 em 26 -, titular que se transferiu para o Atlético Mineiro. No último ano, o aproveitamento de Rodrigo foi de 1,3 por jogo – oito desarmes em seis atuações.

O jogador foi também o 4º defensor que mais interceptou passes em 2017, com 15 antecipações. Na Libertadores do mesmo ano, apesar da baixa estatura, ficou em segundo no ranking de rebatidas defensivas, perdendo apenas para Mina, ex-Palmeiras e contratado pelo Barcelona, que na época atuava pelo Independiente del Valle, do Equador. Desempenho que mostra que mesmo sem os atributos físicos tradicionais de um zagueiro, Rodrigo Caio consegue ter um bom rendimento tanto no duelo individual quanto no jogo aéreo. Com uma vantagem: a saída de bola.

Tendo atuado muitas vezes como volante, Rodrigo tem no passe uma de suas maiores virtudes. No Brasileirão 2017, foi o 10º maior passador da competição, acertando 1527 toques. Em 2018, com poucos minutos em campo, esteve longe de repetir o feito, ainda assim, teve a maior média do São Paulo de passes certos por rodada, com 39,8 por jogo, e um aproveitamento de 96,7% nas tentativas, a maior entre os atletas de linha do time com mais de cinco partidas disputadas.

O valor da negociação, considerado alto por muitos, pode ser discutível – R$ 22,2 milhões por 45% do passe -, porém, o ganho técnico que Abel Braga poderá ter em seu elenco no caso de Rodrigo repetir as boas atuações que o fizeram chegar até a Seleção Brasileira parece inquestionável.

Logo após vencer o Colo-Colo por 2 a 0 e alcançar a classificação para a semifinal da Libertadores, Luiz Felipe Scolari chegou para dar entrevista coletiva cheio de bom humor. Logo avisou que não falaria sobre o clássico de sábado, contra o São Paulo, pelo Campeonato Brasileiro. Mas falou até em torcer para enfrentar o Grêmio na decisão do torneio continental.

– Torço por nosso país, nossos treinadores, nosso futebol. Não vejo por que não valorizar o que é bom e o que é nosso. E o Renato… Espero encontrá-lo na final, que seja assim: Palmeiras x Grêmio – disse Felipão, que elogiou nominalmente todos os técnicos de times brasileiros classificados na Libertadores e na Copa Sul-Americana, inclusive indicando que torce para o Cruzeiro de Mano Menezes eliminar o Boca Juniors (nesta quinta-feira, no Mineirão, precisa reverter a derrota por 2 a 0 na ida, na Argentina).

– Do jogo de sábado só posso falar que terei a maior alegria de encontrar o Diego Aguirre e espero que ele me pague o churrasco que paguei em Porto Alegre e ele não me devolveu. Sou amigo do peito do Aguirre. Antes dos Gre-Nais, jantávamos juntos em churrascarias. É amizade de alguém que conheci no Brasil e me tratou de forma muito respeitosa. Ele treina do meu lado, tentei subir o muro para gritar bobagem, mas não dá, ergueram 3, 4 metros de muro. Com Carpegiani (como técnico do São Paulo), gritei e caí. Agora, não dá tempo. Encontrar o Aguirre é sempre bom. Que eles se matem em campo e eu e o Aguirre que nos lembremos do tempo de Porto Alegre. Será ótimo – avisou, sorrindo, sem se preocupar com qualquer repercussão de suas declarações.

– A única coisa que prometi para a minha mulher quando disse que vinha para o Palmeiras é que não ouviria nada, nem programa de televisão ou rádio, para não ficar respondendo. Não estou escutando nada, se é bom, se tem ranço. Vou cumprir promessa porque aí não tem que discutir, ficar bravo. É a mesma coisa de quando eu estava na China: não entendo nada.

Tem tomado Maracugina para ficar calminho. Não foi o Deyverson que deu uma peitada no zagueiro do Cruzeiro. Foi o zagueiro do Cruzeiro. os árbitros estão interpretando o que não existe. Se ele parou e deu um drible, não é menosprezo, ou ninguém pode driblar. É que hoje é bonito falar do Deyverson, Chico Anysio, não sei o que. É bom jogador, comete deslizes, mas que comecem por outros jogadores, e que os árbitros pensem nisso em vez de punir Deyverson porque o cabelinho dele é loiro.

Vitória sobre Colo-Colo
Mérito de equipe que se dedica. Quando idealizamos o time do Colo-Colo, fizemos modificações e tivemos a participação de dois ou três jogadores jogando de forma diferente, mas pela equipe. É um elenco trabalhando sério e tentando resultados para um possível título.

Dudu
Dudu foi meu jogador no Grêmio. Na primeira semana, estava chateado, na reserva, o Murtosa o colocou na linha e, comigo, ele é isso aí. Sempre foi assim. Trocamos de posição baseado no que o conhecemos e nas informações do Palmeiras de 2016, em alguns jogos, e como aquela equipe ia nos complicar jogando daquela maneira, optamos pelo Dudu nessa posição, e ele foi fundamental. Ele se sente bem comigo e eu me sinto bem com ele.

Borja
Borja é um excelente jogador e, por isso, tem sempre que trabalhar para evoluir. Hoje, jogou muito bem no aspecto tático, evoluiu 30% dos outros jogos. Se ele se porta dessa forma em outros jogos, é espetacular para a equipe. Ele precisa jogar como sabe, mas com aplicação tática que ele, muitas vezes, por não ter sido cobrado e ensinando no tempo certo, tem dificuldade. Está melhorando nesse sentido. Melhor para o Palmeiras.

Thiago Santos
O Thiago faz o que sabe fazer bem: tem grande poder de marcação, antecipação, boa bola alta. Ele te dá, em uma equipe, a função que é dada. Não pode cobrar dele ser armador e finalizador, mas faz muito bem a função. Por isso, nossa zaga sofreu muito pouco.

وقال عرابي في تصريحات تلفزيونية ببرنامج “الماتش” على فضائية “صدى البلد”: “أداء الأهلي لم يكن الأفضل، وأحمد قندوسي قدم مباراة جيدة ومع اندماجه أكثر سيظهر بمستوى أفضل”.

وأضاف: “يجب على كولر أن يبدأ بـ محمد مجدي أفشة ولكن حسب المباريات، خاصة أنه توجد مواجهات يكون أفشة مفيدًا لها، وفي مباريات أخرى قندوسي له الأولوية”.

وتابع: “النادى الأهلى يخوض مباريات كثيرة وبالتالى يحتاج إلى جاهزية كل لاعبيه”.

واستكمل: “حسين الشحات في آخر 10 مباريات من أفضل اللاعبين في الفريق، رغم تراجع مستواه في فترة ما، وأفشة حقق الفوز للأهلي في أكثر من مناسبة من قبل”.

واستطرد: “أتوقع أن يتخذ كولر قرارًا بإراحة بعض اللاعبين الأساسيين فى مباراة المقاولون العرب، ويوازن بين الأساسيين والبدلاء”.
