Rashford played poorly for United

Manchester United’s hopes of Europa League glory were ended in dramatic fashion as Villarreal triumphed 11-10 in a thrilling penalty shootout.

After Gerard Moreno put the La Liga outfit ahead, connecting with a well-taken Dani Parejo free-kick, United struggled to break down their organised and compact opponents.

The Yellow Submarines had been well-drilled by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, but a deflected shot fell kindly into Edinson Cavani’s path early in the second half for the Uruguay international to slot into an unguarded net.

However, the Red Devils failed to build any momentum on the back of their fortuitous equaliser, and in a game lacking in quality where only three shots on target were recorded, the game meandered through extra time without any incident of note.

After 20 successful penalties from both teams, it was down to the respective goalkeepers to decide the tie, and after Geronimo Rulli cooly tucked his spot-kick into the top corner, the Argentine keeper got down low to keep David de Gea’s tame effort out and a lot of focus post-match has been on De Gea’s performance.

Whilst questions can be asked of De Gea’s shootout showing, it’s hard to pin all the blame for the loss on him. No United player covered themself in glory bar the impressive Scott McTominay, although one man, in particular, let his teammates and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down with an extremely underwhelming performance.

As per SofaScore, Marcus Rashford won just six of his 19 duels on Wednesday evening, epitomising his desperately poor showing in Gdansk.

The lightweight display meant the Old Trafford outfit struggled to keep hold of the ball in the attacking third of the pitch, with him often losing out to a Villarreal defender before any meaningful progress had been made and allowed the Spanish side to regain possession far too easily.

Rashford has had a fairly impressive season for his boyhood club, scoring 21 goals and providing 15 assists for his teammates in all competitions, yet the £76.5m-rated forward (as per Transfermarkt) was unable to find his best form in the biggest game of the campaign.

The England international is often very effective at dragging his team up the pitch and creating havoc with his direct nature and dazzling dribbling, but even that side of his game let him down in midweek.

Only three of Rashford’s nine attempted dribbles were successful as attack after attack was broken down with the ball at the 23-year-old’s feet.

We’re sure the young winger will come back stronger next season for his shocking experience in this European final, but it was certainly a night to forget for Rashford and on a night where he was needed to stand up and be counted, Rashford was a shadow of himself and he let his manager down with his poor showing.

BORN: At Harare, 10 October 1980
MAJOR TEAMS: CFX Academy (2000/01). Present club side: Old Hararians
KNOWN AS: Nyasha Chari. Nickname: `Tupack’, after a rap singer
BATTING STYLE: Right Hand Bat
BOWLING STYLE: Right Arm Fast Medium
OCCUPATION: CFX Academy studentFIRST-CLASS DEBUT: 2-4 March 2001, CFX Academy v Midlands, at Kwekwe SportsClub.
TEST DEBUT: Still awaited
ODI DEBUT: Still awaitedBIOGRAPHY (updated April 2002)Nyasha Chari is one of the promising township players who have benefited from the development scheme and are now coming through into first-class cricket. Like the others, he has no family background in the game and developed an interest at junior school through a Zimbabwe Cricket Union coach, in this case Henry Motsi. He became one of the few to spend two years at the CFX Academy, due to an injury that interfered with most of his first year there, in 2001.He attended St Aiden’s Primary School, a Catholic school in the black Harare dormitory suburb of Chitungwiza. Mr Motsi organized cricket practices at the school and selected Nyasha among others as one of the most promising players, to form a squad that played as a Chitungwiza team. He was very successful as an all-rounder, and remembers scoring a century against Chiedza Primary School and took ten wickets in an innings against Shiriyedenga Primary School from the Glen Norah township. Surprisingly, though, he did not win selection for the national primary schools cricket week, although he attended trials. At Mr Motsi’s recommendation, he won a scholarship to Prince Edward School that allowed him to continue his cricketing progress. He won a place in the first team while still in Form Two, thanks to regular outstanding bowling performances in the Under-14 side. He attended trials that included the best players from each age group for a school team to tour England, and Nyasha won a place as the youngest member of the touring party. His best performance was in a match against Brighton College, when he took three wickets for 25 runs in 10 overs. In the other matches he did not take many wickets but managed to keep the run rate down generally to less than two an over.He was in the school first team for five years, and his best performances were seven for 49 in 23 overs against Eaglesvale, seven for 52 against St John’s and six for 25 in 13 overs against Brighton College when they toured Zimbabwe. He played 56 matches for the school first team, he recalls, and only missed one, due to a shoulder he twisted during fielding practice. In those games he believes he took 220 wickets at a cost of about 11 each. His highest score for the first team was 83 against Churchill, but usually batted down the order at five or six where he had less chance of building an innings. In Form Two he played for the national Under-15 team and travelled to the Uner-15 Week in South Africa; the following year he was a member of the party that played in the Under-15 World Cup in England. He played for the Mashonaland age-group teams from 1996 to 1999, winning selection for the Under-19 Week in South Africa in his final year. He finished school in 2000, but did not play cricket at school as he was studying for his A-levels. In 1997 he was appointed captain, but resigned after a few matches, feeling that the job was not for him.He did play for Old Hararians Sports Club, though, with success. Starting in Form Three, he also played at times for Old Georgians, Universals and Harare Sports Club, but eventually settled at the Prince Edward Old Boys team, Old Hararians. His best performance was four for 20 when playing for Universals, but has been going in late in the order and rarely had much opportunity to shine with the bat. He played a few winter cricket matches for Goromonzi, but found it difficult because of clashes with other sports at school. He was accepted for the CFX Academy for 2001, and in his debut match against Midlands he took a wicket with his fourth ball in first-class cricket. He is primarily an in-swing bowler, but he recently attended the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, India, and Dennis Lillee changed his action slightly to enable him to swing the ball out as well, and also develop a useful slower ball. He can cut the ball sharply in to the batsman off the pitch. By his own admission, he is not really a quick bowler, but is accurate and often difficult to score from.Unfortunately he was to miss most of that year at the Academy. In an early Logan Cup match he injured a shoulder, which he followed up with a hernia injury in the groin. He tried to play through them, but they got worse and resulted in his missing the rest of the programme. He needed an operation to clear up the hernia problem, but needed a long course of physiotherapy. He spoke to Academy coach Dave Houghton about all the time he had missed and asked if he could make this up in 2002, which was agreed. When batting, Nyasha is a strong front-foot driver who can also cut, but cannot yet play the pull. He is usually a middle-distance fielder but does not like fielding in the slips.Nyasha pays tribute to the coaching he has received from former national player Robin Brown, who coached him just before the Under-15 World Cup, as well as Mr Motsi, George Lee-Bell at Prince Edward School, and currently Dave Houghton. As a Christian, he gives praise to God for his success.Cricketing heroes: Malcolm Marshall, Dennis Lillee and Viv Richards.Personal ambitions: "To play for my country."Toughest opponents: "All left-handers give me a problem. Stuart Matsikenyeri has also given me quite a hard time. In recent years, Hamilton Masakadza. The best bowler I’ve ever faced I would say is Henry Olonga."Proudest achievement: "Playing for my country [at age-group levels] and being picked for the Academy."Best friends in cricket: "I’m a guy who talks to everyone. In the Academy I’m close to Keith Dabengwa because we spend most of the time together."Other qualifications: Two A-levels.Other sports: "At school, soccer (second team) and rugby (fourth or fifth teams, but I didn’t want to go up to the top level because it’s not my type of game."Other interests and hobbies: "I’m getting interested in reading novels, and music. Singing at church."

Liverpool eye up Jonathan Ikone signing

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Lille attacking midfielder Jonathan Ikone this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his squad.

The Lowdown: Reinforcements required

The Reds managed to salvage a disappointing season last month, finishing third in the Premier League after an excellent end to the campaign. The importance of qualifying for the Champions League cannot be downplayed, both financially and in terms of being able to attract top players this summer.

Klopp will be keen on making a few additions, with depth in attacking areas potentially something he may look at improving given the largely disappointing goal returns from his forwards.

The Latest: Liverpool eye up Ikone move

According to Anfield Central, Liverpool are ‘genuinely interested’ in signing Lille’s Ikone in the next transfer window, with the Frenchman a newly-crowned Ligue 1 champion. The 23-year-old scored four goals and registered five assists as his club sealed title glory in France and he featured in all but one of their league games.

Liverpool believe they can sign Ikone at a good price, potentially bringing him in as a replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri, who in recent weeks has been linked with a possible exit from Anfield.

The Verdict: Exciting long-term addition

Ikone is an exciting young player who could bring quality and guile to the Reds’ midfield, having averaged more dribbles per game (1.4) than Mohamed Salah (one) in the league last season.

He may not come in as a key starter immediately, but with Jordan Henderson and Thiago both in their 30s now, he could be viewed as a long-term replacement in the middle of the park, albeit in a more attacking role.

At 23, Ikone would be arriving at a similar age to the likes Salah (25) and Sadio Mane (24) when they joined Liverpool, showing that he could mature into an even more formidable player over time.

India must play two spinners at Jamaica

The flat track at the Antigua Recreation Ground meant that the fourthTest was always going to yield a high-scoring draw

Erapalli Prasanna15-May-2002The flat track at the Antigua Recreation Ground meant that the fourthTest was always going to yield a high-scoring draw. The home team hadwon the previous Test in Barbados and leveled the series 1-1. Clearlythe momentum was with the West Indies, and one expected them to buildon it. It was then shocking to see a dry and docile track bereft ofgrass laid out for the Test match; a very negative move by the WestIndies authorities who denied their team a chance of gaining the leadin the series.
© CricInfoIt is apparent that both teams misread the track and relied on pace inthis Test match. So much so that India decided to leave out HarbhajanSingh to bring in Anil Kumble. I have always maintained that theIndian team should play to its strength spin. Anil Kumble andHarbhajan Singh are world-class spinners and even if their recordwhile playing abroad is not very good, they would have proved a deadlyduo on this track. The toss didn’t make any great difference; I reckon that India wouldhave opted to bat first anyhow. So it was up to the Indians to cash inon Hooper’s generosity. The Indian innings though did not get off to the best of starts. ShivSunder Das is having a wretched time against the short-risingdeliveries. I feel sorry for the lad; he has to work on improving histechnique. His partner Wasim Jaffer looks to be a sound openingbatsman. He has the right technique and most importantly he alwayslooks to get behind the line of the ball.I was also delighted to see Ajay Ratra show a lot of application onhis way to his maiden Test hundred. It was an innings that put an endto the loose talk by some of the pundits. The game of cricket is easywhen played from a distance. The fact that some of these pundits werenicknamed `strokeless wonders’ in their playing days is something thatwe would do well to remember.Ganguly’s decision to prolong the innings after Ratra got to hishundred baffled me a lot. By doing so, the Indian skipper denied hisbowlers the chance of bowling a few extra overs that evening, whichmight have seen them grabbing a few more wickets. Remember, the WestIndies were under tremendous pressure that evening after Brian Larafell for a low score to Anil Kumble. Talking about Kumble, it washeartening to see him come out and bowl with a broken jaw. He bowledreally well, maintaining a good line and length, which is the key forsuccess on such docile tracks. With Kumble being injured, Tendulkar, who had to suffer themortification of being out for a gloden duck, was the one genuine spinoption India had. I was then surprised to see Tendulkar show a greaterinkling to bowl off-spin than leg-spin. I felt his leg-breaks woulddefinitely have proved more effective.I am sure that India really missed the services of Harbhajan Singh. The off-spinner would have been able to exploit the rough outside theoff-stump of the left-handed batsmen. Remember, the West Indies teamwas packed with five left-handed batsmen. The cricket from both the teams was defensive from the outset and itcontinued to be so, all through the five days. Never did I find anysense of urgency or purpose from either side. Such game-plans are notin the best interest of the game and are better forgotten.
© CricInfoAs for India, the sight of Srinath struggling to generate pace must bea worrying. The senior fast bowler looked jaded and it is about timethe think-tank had a close look at their game-plan. I would still backIndia to win if they were to play two spinners rather than placeabsolute faith in pace. The West Indies bowlers will be going after the Indian batsmen atSabina Park. Our think-tank has to realise that it is no good tosettle for a draw. The boys should go out with a positive frame ofmind to win the Test match. This is indeed their last chance to returnhome wreathed in glory.

New Zealand's Bond is Warwickshire bound

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond is to play for Warwickshire in August

Lynn McConnell02-Jul-2002New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond is to play for Warwickshire in August.Bond, who secured another five-wicket bag today, his second of the two-Test series against the West Indies and the second of his brief Test career, is to replace South African Shaun Pollock while he takes part in an international tri-series for his country. After a four-month lay-off Bond was keen to maintain the momentum he has gained since returning for the West Indies tour to bridge the gap of non-activity New Zealand faces before it plays in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in Sri Lanka in September. His contract involves him playing three four-day matches in the County Championship and one one-day match in the Norwich Union League. In his six Test matches since making his debut against Australia in November last year, Bond has taken 26 wickets at 25.19.New Zealand Cricket operations manager John Reid said: “New Zealand Cricket has agreed to allow Shane the opportunity to play some cricket for Warwickshire because we believe it will provide him with excellent preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka in September.”The TelstraClear Black Caps first match in the ICC Champions Trophy is against Australia in Colombo on September 15.”This is a knock-out tournament. We must win that first match if we are to progress so we want Shane to be in the best possible condition for that match,” said Reid. “After a four month injury lay-off he needs to maintain the momentum he has developed during the current tour of the West Indies.Bond’s manager, Geoff Allott, supported New Zealand Cricket’s decision: “As the West Indies series has progressed Shane has started to find his rhythm again and, in terms of his preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy, he will benefit far more from match-play for Warwickshire than he would back in New Zealand where his preparation would be restricted to indoor net bowling.”Bond will return to New Zealand after the West Indies tour and the New Zealand Cricket medical team will be conducting a thorough assessment of his physical fitness, before confirming his availability for Warwickshire.”Shane’s re-introduction to cricket after his foot injury has been well managed and we want to ensure this continues,” said Reid.Under his contract with Warwickshire, Bond will have a managed workload where he will be restricted to bowling a maximum of 20 overs per day.

MCFC fans want Raphinha

Manchester City fans want to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha after they were linked with a move for the Brazilian.

With the 2020/21 campaign now over, City will now be looking ahead to the next term as they look to build upon the success of this season. They won both the Premier League and the League Cup, but their defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final means there is still room for improvement.

As such, this summer could be a busy one at the Etihad Stadium in terms of transfers and, according to Gianluigi Longari, City are interested in signing £22.5m-valued Raphinha (Transfermarkt).

Signed by Leeds from Rennes last year, he scored six goals and provided nine assists in 30 games in his debut Premier League term (Transfermarkt).

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Wolves transfer update on Lee

Many Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Lee Kang-in.

As per Super Deporte, the Midlands club are currently watching the Valencia ace along with a whole host of other teams in Europe.

The La Liga side are open to selling him in the summer window, with the Molineux faithful knocking on the door for his potential signature.

Transfermarkt currently value him at £13.5m, but he could be sold for lower than his market value.

Given that he is just 20 years of age, and a number of top European teams, including the likes of Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, Milan and Napoli are also interested in signing him, the Wanderers should seriously consider pouncing on what could well turn out to be an absolute bargain.

Royals back on top as Norwich Union League tables take shape

Worcestershire Royals moved back level on points with Warwickshire Bears at the top of the Norwich Union League Division One table thanks to an eight-wicket victory over Somerset Sabres at Taunton

George Dobell07-Jul-2002Worcestershire Royals moved back level on points with Warwickshire Bears at the top of the Norwich Union League Division One table thanks to an eight-wicket victory over Somerset Sabres at Taunton.Royals’ captain Graeme Hick led the way for the visitors with a destructive 141 not out, as they made light of what had appeared to be a challenging target of 270.Hick added 127 with Vikram Solanki for the second wicket, before taking the game beyond doubt in a partnership of 139 with Ben Smith (64 not out). The Sabres are now facing a real fight in the second half of the season if they are to preserve their first division status. The most comfortable victory of the day came at Maidstone, as Kent Spitfires stormed to victory over Durham Dynamos by 165 runs.Once again the Spitfires were grateful for the broad bat of Rob Key, as he added 102 with James Hockley for the third wicket. But when they both fell for 58 the middle order failed to capitalise on their hard work and but for Andrew Symonds’ 31and a late 21 from James Golding, they may have let slip their good start. As it turned out they had more than enough runs. David Masters cut through the Dynamos top order like a knife through butter, reducing them to 19-5 and then 35-6. Only Marc Symington (22) and Graeme Bridge (24) offered resistance, but the loss sees leaves Durham Dynamos rooted to the foot of the first division table. Spitfires consolidate their position in mid table. In the remaining game in the top division Phil DeFreitas reduced Glamorgan Dragons to 28-3 at Swansea before Matthew Maynard (38) and Adrian Dale (78 not out) gave the home team heart and helped them towards a moderate final total of 220-8.DeFreitas followed up his 4-24 by opening the batting for the Foxes and striking five fours in his 16-ball 25 to set the tone for the Foxes reply. And, with Iain Sutcliffe scoring his second NUL 50 of the season, and useful contributions from Wells, Maddy and Burns, the Foxes reached the target in the final over to join the Dragons in mid-table.In the second division a century from Jeff Cook was the platform for Northants Steelbacks’ 62-run victory over Lancashire Lightning at Northampton.Cook (102) added 109 for the third wicket with David Sales (64), a competition best for the Australian-born left-hander, to help his side to a competitive 261-8 in their 45 overs. And although Alec Swann and Mark Chilton added 68 for Lightening’s first wicket, they were unable to match the pace set by the home batsmen as the Steelbacks’ bowlers kept to a good line and length throughout. The pressure from the ever-rising run rate caused Byas and Alec Swann to perish to run outs as the middle order fell away, and Cook capped a memorable day by snatching three late wickets.Elsewhere Gloucestershire Gladiators defended a paltry 161 all out in 40.3 overs against Derbyshire Scorpions at Derby to boost their promotion hopes.Graeme Welch took career-best one-day figures of 5-18 in nine overs as the visitors slipped from 74-1 to 96-6 before 20 not out from James Averis took them to a barely respectable total. But it proved to be enough as only Dominic Cork (43) of the home players could muster any resistance. They became so bogged down that they eventually finished seven short of the target, having taken all 45 overs to reach 154-9, at a rate of under 3.5 runs an over.20-year-old Timothy Murtagh rocked Middlesex Crusaders with three early wickets as Surrey Lions roared to victory at Southgate. Owais Shah helped his side to 194-8 in a weather-curtailed innings, with an innings of 74. But it was never likely to be enough as a stand of 121 between Mark Ramprakash (87 not out playing against his old club) and promising all-rounder Rikki Clarke (62 not out) proved.Surrey Lions were without several first choice players due to injuries and international calls, but on this form and with the strength in depth they posses, they look favourites to take the NUL second division title and promotion.Meanwhile Neil Johnson hit a fine 91 for Hampshire Hawks as they beat Sussex Sharks by 93 runs in Southampton. With Derek Kenway he added 78 for the first wicket, but the hosts fell away later, scoring a disappointing 203 all out, with Billy Taylor finishing with 4-22.However, it proved enough as the Sharks slipped to just 110 all out in 34.2 overs in reply.A partnership of 51 between Chris Adams and Murray Goodwin threatened briefly, but when they fell in quick succession to Shaun Udal (4-31), the Sharks never looked likely to reach the target. The loss leaves the Sharks floundering at the bottom of the second division, while the Hawks – still with a couple of games in hand – will feel they have every chance of gaining promotion.

Wolves transfer update on Moutinho

Many Wolves fans have been left to flock to a big transfer update on Joao Moutinho.

As per Grada 3, Jorge Mendes has offered Valencia the opportunity to sign the central midfield player on a free transfer in the summer window.

Moutinho did not exactly have his best season, scoring just one goal and supplying one assist in 36 matches in total across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Some Midlands club supporters grew more frustrated with some of his displays towards the end of the 2020/21 term, most notably against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.

However, the Molineux outfit should at least be trying to get some form of a transfer fee for who is still a decorated player currently with the Portugal national team in Euro 2020 and looking to make an impact on the tournament.
